In Episode 7, we review Kutná Hora: The City of Silver and discuss our first, second, and third impressions of the game. To start off the episode, we chat about the games that are bringing us joy: Isle of Cats, The King Is Dead: Second Edition, Faraway, and Paladins of the West Kingdom. Developing the City of Silver through purchasing plots of land, securing building permits, and expanding the mines, we discuss the variable economic market, constructing the grand Saint (Santa) Barbara's Cathedral, and paying taxes in this hand management and tile placement game by Czech Games Edition. Although this game makes for an enjoyable play that none of us will turn down, it has us thinking about what creates staying power in a game. Another year has gone by in a flash and it's time again for me to start another convention season. Well, I say "season", but that's exaggerating it. I'm actually only attending two board game shows this year. I just can't afford to fly everywhere and spend time away from home. So I chose two events that I really enjoyed last year and that won't cost me the world. The first of these is, of course, UK Games Expo 2024. Welcome to the latest episode of Cult of the Old! Each episode your hosts Iain McAllister, Matt Thrower, and Nate Owens are going to turn back the clock to look at games that are at least 10 years old. They'll give their own critical impressions, tell you about the history of the game and its impact, and what relevance these games still have in the modern hobby landscape. So far this season we've been on the farm, battled in tokyo, cured a worldwide pandemic, built an industrial empire, expanded our Citadels, struggled in the cold war, and been the lords of waterdeep. Now it is time to cross the barrier into the unknown as we journey to space for the first sci-fi game of the season. It's time to put on your cap, yell “10-4, Rubber ducky' and blow your space horn as we sign up to become Galaxy Truckers. Published by Czech Games Edition and designed by Vlaada Chvatil with art from Tomáš Kučerovský and Radim Pech. Show Links Below are links to the games and anything else that the team mention during the course of the cast. We will be linking to BGG for games, designers, artists, and publishers as that is a good place to start for raw information about the game in question. We take no time off for Boxing Day here at SVWAG, a day so named because according to the common law of the King (still feels weird saying that) citizens of the Commonwealth are permitted to punch someone in the face on this day only. It's like a pugilistic The Purge but with the metric system and occasional poutine. The news this week features a number of exemplary game titles. Many a stellar game has crossed our paths purely on the strength of its name, whereas others are so generic as to defy searching. Go ahead, find R on Board Game Geek, or the game Quest. We received a number of questions of a more personal nature which we have decided not to address. This is only partially out of a sense of privacy. Rather, we are firmly of the editorial position that the show is best when we focus on games, rather than the personal details of the hosts. We pride ourselves in only wasting a certain amount of your valuable time, and were we to indulge in more personal digressions that could easily balloon the show well beyond the limits of absurdity. 01:08 AYURIS: Flotilla (J.B. It was a thrill to have a pan-Anglo alliance together to raise money for Food Banks Canada, with many current or prior Commonwealth countries represented either on the stream or in the donations. Today Julius and I spend some time talking about the pretty darned new solo game Under Falling Skies published by Czech Games Edition and designed by Tomáš Uhlíř. In this game you are defending earth from a line of invading aliens as they drop closer and closer to your bases one row at a time. My gosh... in the episode I compared it to Missle Command but's more of a Space Invaders isn't it? Whoops. Anyway, it's a neat game with a ton of options! Oh wow! I only just realized this was originally a 9 card PnP game! How cool is that!? Under Falling Skies (BGG)

The sky suddenly darkened above me. As I looked up, I saw the giant spaceship that was filling up more and more of my view. It towered above the skyscrapers like a huge saucer, dotted in lights and what seemed like openings. It was hard to make out, but it seemed to be bigger than downtown. Suddenly, small aircraft emerged from the spaceship's openings and started to descend. It felt like we were suddenly living Under Falling Skies by Czech Games Edition.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2021/01/30/under-falling-skies-saturday-review/
Mark has occasion to quote three different movies in this episode, and miraculously none of them are Pulp Fiction, The Lion in Winter, or even Aliens--despite the latter being related to a game discussed! A hook, as per the dictionary definition, is something that draws you in. In games, a hook can be a number of different things. Often it is something visually exciting, such as beautiful illustrations, amazingly detailed miniatures, realistic resources or some sort of physical component that is integral to gameplay. Hooks can also be an interesting theme, an exciting gameplay mechanism or even the background story behind how a game was made. Certain awards or even the price of a game can be a hook too. Ultimately it's about finding something that grabs your attention and gets you to take a closer look. Proč to všechno? - S Tomášem Baránkem, publicistou, autorem lifehacky.cz a ředitelem nakladatelství Jan Melvil Publishing, o tom, podle čeho v Melvilu vybírá nové knihy. - O deskovkářském byznysu s Petrem Murmakem, vydavatelem deskových her z Czech Games Edition.

Mark and Walker switch roles this week in a stunning reversal. Walker avoids telling Mark to "get good," but it's a close thing only narrowly avoided. In Walker's defense, Mark really should git gud--as has been noted by many a scholar and physician. They discuss the redevelopment of Terra Mystica called Gaia Project, and then they generalize to how publishers sometimes mess up new editions of their games. Mark's sanity is questioned throughout; probably a sound policy.Games Played Last Week:-Stone Age 1m17s (Bernd Brunnhofer, Hans im Gluck, 2008)-Corporate America 3m44s (Teale Fristoe, Nothing Sacred Games, 2013)-Scythe: The Wind Gambit 8m12s (Kai Starck & Jamey Stegmaier, Stonemaier Games, 2017)-Mythic Battles: Pantheon 9m55s (Eric Bourlett & Benoit Vogt, Monolith, 2017) -Galaxy Trucker 14m26s (Vlaada Chvatil, Czech Games Edition, 2007)News (and why it doesn't matter):-Asmodee Buys Something 18m01s-ShipNaked and Dan Yarrington's Run-in with Phil Eklund 18m20sFeature Game: Gaia Project 22m06s (Jens Drögemüller & Helge Ostertag, Feuerland Spiele, 2017) Topic: Reskins & Second Editions 45m40s

REVIEW - (38:53): This week we wade right in to the heavy-hitting social game Codenames by Czech Games Edition. Since it's unassuming debut, Codenames has taken the party/social game category by storm, quickly becoming a fan favorite and making its way to many gamer's shelves. In this word association game, two teams of players, each led by a Spymaster, seek to beat the other team by finding all of their team's words from among those on the board. Using single world clues from the Spymaster, their team must guess their leader's intended word choices without accidentally aiding their opposition - or stumbling onto the game-ending assassin. Simple but engaging and with copious replayability, we explore why Codenames still has staying power in the months since it came out. A typical 5x5 word grid The board based on what the Spymasters have to work with Red would like to say 'Animal: 2', but Mole is a Blue card, which likely won't work Being Spymaster can be a bit mentally taxing thing... Codenames in action. Currently Blue is leading 5 to 4 PLUGS - (57:16): As always, Cardboard Republic YouTube videos and the BGG Guild are still ongoing. In episode 19, Craig and Duke discuss the social contract of gathering at the table to play games: what is expected as a participant, how to function as part of the group, and the faux pas that ruin game nights. They get in depth with two games they're playing: At the Gates of Loyang from Z-man Games and Last will by Czech Games Edition. In Kickstarter talk, they look at Neon Sanctum and Burgle Bros. and talk about the hits their wallets have taken recently. Lastly, in their What the What segment, they finally define "Botch Games." W Alchemikach wyraźnie uwypuklają się dwa wątki. Wątek pijacki i wątek uczelniany.

Finally, this is the forth and last of a series of four interviews I did on my visist to the SPIEL 2011 in Essen. All of these shows have been done in English (since the Germans somehow managed to evade my microphones). I hope, you can cope with my teutonic English for the sake of the interviewees. I planned to have the interviews up during SPIEL, but it turns out that editing takes a lot more raw hardware power than recording and my mobile equipment was ill-fitted for this purpose. Thus, the interviews are late. I'm sorry for that. This concluding interview is with Vlaada Chvatil from Czech Games Edition who had a small but crowded booth at the SPIEL 2011. Vlaada is a well-known Czech board game designer, famous for Galaxy Trucker, Space Alert, Dungeon Lords, his newest games Pictomania and Dungeon Petz and quite a couple more games which have been published internationally. We talk about his game design philosophy and cycle, how his designs come about, his build-and-wreak-havoc-upon-style games and a couple more smaller topics. If you have not yet played any of his games, try some. He's got something for almost everyone! So, I hope you liked the small series! If you have any suggestions or other feedback, please let me know. After all, that is the best way to improve for future interviews. So, let me know! 17:17 minutes (11.91 MB)
As ever, and with no clue what a lang syne is (much less an auld-y type configuration), we embrace the new year by commemorating the old. We would venture that the new year only truly begins once SVWAG has given its imprimatur on the best game published in the preceding year. The Julian Calendar was abandoned in favour of the Gregorian, and it is evident that the Gregorian should be abandoned in favour of the SVWAGgering Calendar.
