The first time I covered this massive board game event was back in 2018. It was well-established at the Birmingham NEC by then, sprawling across halls 1, 2, 3 and 3A. During the COVID pandemic in 2021 and 2022, I skipped the show, but since 2023, I have attended again every year. So, technically speaking, this is my 6th UK Games Expo.Read the full review here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/06/07/uk-games-expo-2025-saturday-review/Useful LinksUK Games Expo: https://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/Asmodee: https://www.asmodee.co.uk/Atikin Games: https://atikingames.com/Malus Hortus review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/04/05/malus-hortus-saturday-review/Dissent Games: https://dissentgames.com/Naylor Games: https://naylorgames.com/Bright Eye Games: https://www.brighteyegames.com/Crimson Keep: https://www.crimsonkeep.co.uk/Crimson Keep review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2025/05/31/crimson-keep-saturday-review/Unfringed: https://unfringed.co/Minerva Tabletop: https://www.minervatabletop.co.uk/Swatch review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2020/08/01/swatch-saturday-review/Crumbs! review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2023/08/05/crumbs-the-sandwich-filler-game-saturday-review/APE Games: https://www.apegames.com/Stuff by Bez: https://www.stuffbybez.com/Play With Us Design: https://pwud.ga/Suolaween review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2022/10/29/soulaween-saturday-review/Red Raven Games: https://www.redravengames.com/Eight-Minutes Empires: Legends review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2019/12/07/eight-minute-empire-legends-saturday-review/Smirk & Dagger Games: https://www.smirkanddagger.com/Mighty Boards: https://www.mighty-boards.com/Czech Games Edition: https://www.czechgames.com/Osprey Games: https://www.ospreypublishing.com/uk/osprey-games/General Orders review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/02/17/general-orders-world-war-ii-saturday-review/Captain Games: https://captain.games/enOcean City Games: https://oceancitygames.co.uk/Paper Fort Games: https://www.paperfortgames.com/Cosmoctopus review: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2024/03/02/cosmoctopus-saturday-review/Roc Nest Games: https://rocnest.uk/Meeple Minded: https://www.facebook.com/MeepleMindedMedia/MusicIntro Music: Bomber (Sting) by Riot (https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/)Music: "diminished", "breaking" and "all day" provided by mobygratis.SupportIf you want to support this podcast financially, please check out the links below:Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/TabletopGamesBlogPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/tabletopgamesblogWebsite: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/support/

In Episode 7, we review Kutná Hora: The City of Silver and discuss our first, second, and third impressions of the game. To start off the episode, we chat about the games that are bringing us joy: Isle of Cats, The King Is Dead: Second Edition, Faraway, and Paladins of the West Kingdom. Developing the City of Silver through purchasing plots of land, securing building permits, and expanding the mines, we discuss the variable economic market, constructing the grand Saint (Santa) Barbara's Cathedral, and paying taxes in this hand management and tile placement game by Czech Games Edition. Although this game makes for an enjoyable play that none of us will turn down, it has us thinking about what creates staying power in a game. Another year has gone by in a flash and it's time again for me to start another convention season. Well, I say "season", but that's exaggerating it. I'm actually only attending two board game shows this year. I just can't afford to fly everywhere and spend time away from home. So I chose two events that I really enjoyed last year and that won't cost me the world. The first of these is, of course, UK Games Expo 2024. Welcome to the latest episode of Cult of the Old! Each episode your hosts Iain McAllister, Matt Thrower, and Nate Owens are going to turn back the clock to look at games that are at least 10 years old. They'll give their own critical impressions, tell you about the history of the game and its impact, and what relevance these games still have in the modern hobby landscape. So far this season we've been on the farm, battled in tokyo, cured a worldwide pandemic, built an industrial empire, expanded our Citadels, struggled in the cold war, and been the lords of waterdeep. Now it is time to cross the barrier into the unknown as we journey to space for the first sci-fi game of the season. It's time to put on your cap, yell “10-4, Rubber ducky' and blow your space horn as we sign up to become Galaxy Truckers. Published by Czech Games Edition and designed by Vlaada Chvatil with art from Tomáš Kučerovský and Radim Pech. Show Links Below are links to the games and anything else that the team mention during the course of the cast. We will be linking to BGG for games, designers, artists, and publishers as that is a good place to start for raw information about the game in question. We take no time off for Boxing Day here at SVWAG, a day so named because according to the common law of the King (still feels weird saying that) citizens of the Commonwealth are permitted to punch someone in the face on this day only. It's like a pugilistic The Purge but with the metric system and occasional poutine. The news this week features a number of exemplary game titles. Many a stellar game has crossed our paths purely on the strength of its name, whereas others are so generic as to defy searching. Go ahead, find R on Board Game Geek, or the game Quest. Men nu er Peter også sprunget ud som brætspilsdesigner og han debuterer på Essen i år med et tematisk Eurogame i rummet! We received a number of questions of a more personal nature which we have decided not to address. This is only partially out of a sense of privacy. Rather, we are firmly of the editorial position that the show is best when we focus on games, rather than the personal details of the hosts. We pride ourselves in only wasting a certain amount of your valuable time, and were we to indulge in more personal digressions that could easily balloon the show well beyond the limits of absurdity. 01:08 AYURIS: Flotilla (J.B. It was a thrill to have a pan-Anglo alliance together to raise money for Food Banks Canada, with many current or prior Commonwealth countries represented either on the stream or in the donations. That is globalism we can get behind here at SVWAG. That said, let us make our next planned fundraising endeavour yet more international: a Kickstarter campaign to fund Mark's acquisition of a Ferrari Portofino. Deskovky zažívají obrovskejch rozmach. Petr Murmak z Czech Games Edition nás nechal nahlídnout do celýho procesu a vytáhli jsme z něj klasicky i pár pikošek. Co musíte podstoupit, když chcete prodat svůj nápad na deskovku? Existoval někdy pravej kůň Napoli? Co obnáší vyrobit si vlastní Monopoly? Hrajte deskovky? A jaký nejradši? Hádáte se u nich nebo spíš relaxujete?
As the alien fleet bears down on your operations center, a single enemy ships laser guns flash. "Direct hit!" reports an underling. You know you can't take any more of those. Without hesitation you bark an order to your staff, "Fire the the guns!". Your second in command frantically replies, "We can't do that Captian!". "WHY NOT?" you roar. "We already put a die in the lane with the guns action!" This podcast is all about boardgames and this week we are featuring Under Falling Skies. As your boat hits the beach of this island, you hop off and survey the sight before you. The verdant green forrest is draped across the rocky landscape dotted here and there with what must be ancient structures. It's all you can do to stop yourself from just grabing your bag and running after it. What secrets must lie just out of sight in that lush jungle, but what dangers may lurk within as well? Today Julius and I spend some time talking about the pretty darned new solo game Under Falling Skies published by Czech Games Edition and designed by Tomáš Uhlíř. In this game you are defending earth from a line of invading aliens as they drop closer and closer to your bases one row at a time. My gosh... in the episode I compared it to Missle Command but's more of a Space Invaders isn't it? Whoops. Anyway, it's a neat game with a ton of options! Oh wow! I only just realized this was originally a 9 card PnP game! How cool is that!? Under Falling Skies (BGG)

The sky suddenly darkened above me. As I looked up, I saw the giant spaceship that was filling up more and more of my view. It towered above the skyscrapers like a huge saucer, dotted in lights and what seemed like openings. It was hard to make out, but it seemed to be bigger than downtown. Suddenly, small aircraft emerged from the spaceship's openings and started to descend. It felt like we were suddenly living Under Falling Skies by Czech Games Edition.Read the full article here: https://tabletopgamesblog.com/2021/01/30/under-falling-skies-saturday-review/
Mark has occasion to quote three different movies in this episode, and miraculously none of them are Pulp Fiction, The Lion in Winter, or even Aliens--despite the latter being related to a game discussed!
