Floating down a river, peeing in a bottle, and getting therapy from a psychologist who only works with comedians...that's what's going on this week with guest Dustin Chafin. Born in a doublewide trailer in Kilgore, Texas; son of a used-car salesman and a beautiful and wild hippy child; grandson of Choctaw Native Americans: Dustin Chafin is both Cowboy and Indian. Dustin set foot in the boxing ring at the young age of five. Full of fight and fury, he quickly won golden gloves. As a young man, Dustin's path took a turn towards the spiritual, and led him to the mountains of Chile where he worked as a missionary for many years. After developing a love and deep appreciation for people and their experiences, Dustin followed his calling from the Chilean forests to the tall buildings and crazy streets of New York City. There he found his true passion, culminating his experience of peoples and their voices and the fight of the ring: stand-up. Since Chafin first grasped the microphone, he has been very busy. He has been featured in the New York Underground Comedy Festival Hosted The Bill Hicks Tribute show at the Laugh Factory. Dustin has also been featured in the Chicago and Las Vegas comedy festivals where he won "Best of Fest". He headlines regularly at premiere New York City venues such as Caroline's on Broadway, Comic Strip Live, Broadway Comedy Club , Dangerfields and Standup NY. He is the creator of "Uncensored Comedy," a critically acclaimed show that runs weekends in New York City and a nationwide tour and is now the staple of the award wining Greenwich Village Comedy Club. Dustin is a regular on Sirius and XM Satellite Radio - he has been featured on Jim Breuer Unleashed, Court TV Radio, Blue Collar Radio, Howard Stern radio, Howard Demand, Insight Channel and Raw Dog . He was also featured on ABC's special coverage of the New York Comedy Festival. Dustin brought down the house on Showtime's White Boyz in the Hood. In the Flamingo Lounge with Rockabilly Greg

This week's guest is Buffalo Music Hall of Fame inductee, Tom Stahl. Tom joined Rockabilly Greg in the Flamingo Lounge on May 6, 2024. Tom's musical journey started by driving around in a truck full of paint saying, "Would you like paddles and strainers with that?" One day, he hurt his back. He went to the doctor and said, "Doctor! Doctor! It hurts when I do that." The doctor said, "Don't do that." Tom Stahl then started writing songs. And the rest, as they say, is the future. Tom's solo journey has seen him play with Buffalo legend Michael Meldrum and Through the years, Stahl and his band, The Dangerfields, have shared the stage with the likes of Don McClean, America, Three Dog Night, Buddy Guy, Osborne, and many others.

He went on to be a regular in the New York and New Jersey area, eventually emceeing at Dangerfields for five years, while continuing to work the circuit. Hiram moved west in the late eighties and has mined a healthy career playing parts in Sit-Coms and film roles. He still does well in Vegas, where, in addition to working the major casinos, he also headlined a two-year stint in the David Cassidy original production of "The Rat Pack is Back." He also works frequently as a popular roast comedian. His theatrical training in off-Broadway has paid dividends, but he is most at home interpreting comedy, be it live or on film. Jerome Yates: “We were like the Rodney Dangerfields of medicine in the late ‘60s.”

Jerome Yates became a cancer doctor during a time when medical oncologists were thought to be what he describes as “the garbage collectors of medicine.” “The attitude among physician colleagues was, why are you wasting your time doing this? Not only are you wasting your time, but you're making the patients sicker,” said Yates, 85, a retired oncologist who has practiced and administered research at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University of Vermont, NCI and the American Cancer Society. “Some of them get very sick from the chemotherapy, because there are a lot of side effects with the normal tissues.” During his internship at San Bernardino County Hospital, Yates, then 29, encountered a metastatic testicular cancer patient around his age. The young man was admitted to the hospital with congestive heart failure. “They were going to let him die,” Yates said to The Cancer Letter. “I said, ‘If he came in and you didn't know that he had metastatic cancer, you would treat him for his congestive heart failure.' I convinced the attending. We treated him, and it bought him another four or five months. I thought it was an important four or five months.” The prevailing attitude toward cancer treatment was depressing—“That if somebody had metastatic disease, had cancer spread around the body, that they were going to die, and why would you want to prolong their agony?” In 1965, Yates encountered an optimistic article, “Obstacles to the Control of Acute Leukemia” in the CA: Cancer Journal for Clinicians, written by James Holland, an oncologist at Roswell Park Comprehensive Center. “He said that they were on the pathway to cure acute leukemia. The way it was structured, and the timing—I was taking care of some chronically ill patients—and it just sounded like it was exciting,” he said. Yates joined Holland at Roswell Park in 1968 and began conducting clinical trials with members of the cooperative group Acute Leukemia Group B cooperative group, the ALGB. This group, renamed the Cancer and Leukemia Group B in 1976, conducted clinical trials using two, three, or four-drug combinations. This strategy was not received kindly by the mainstream medical community. “There was a general attitude that we not only didn't know what we were doing, but what we were doing was potentially harmful to many patients,” Yates said. Rather than embrace the work of the ALGB, cancer doctors largely adopted the thinking of William Dameshek, an influential hematologist at Harvard who was a mentor to many oncologists. “His attitude was that we were poison pushers, that we were cowboys, that we were doing things that weren't in the best interest of the patient,” Yates said. “Because he was extremely influential, we were viewed as outliers.” Still, Yates remained hopeful—“because, as a physician, taking care of these patients—it made you feel good.” Yates spoke with Alexandria Carolan, an associate editor with the Cancer History Project and reporter with The Cancer Letter. A full transcript appears here.

Confessional Protestants are again NOT in the news thanks in part to a new survey that breaks the white Protestant world in the U.S. down into either evangelical or mainline Protestant camps. Korey Maas, Miles Smith, and D. G. Hart (aka Bob Dole) aimed at using the recent headlines surrounding those survey results to consider what the Protestant equivalent would be to the Roman Catholic intellectual landscape that Ross Douthat outlined in First Things. As it turned out, discussion of the value, plausibility, and deficiency of evangelical as descriptor took more time than planned. But the creation of the so-called evangelical mind, it could well be, is responsible for a failure to recognize the contributions of confessional Protestants. Equally plausible is the possibility that confessional Protestants themselves have lost touch with the intellectual tradition (authors, curricula, academic disciplines) that were the backdrop for the scholars and pastors who produced the Protestant confessions. In which case, if Roman Catholics present a thicker intellectual tradition than Protestants, the reason could be that their institutions have kept their intellectual traditions alive better than Protestants who may have been tempted to throw their intellectual energies into the evangelical mind. Along the way the interlocutors referred to Miles Smith's recent essay on evangelical elites and to the range of Christian writers and scholars that Ken Myers hosts on the Mars Hill Audio Journal.
