RuPaul might be the country’s most famous drag queen, but in the Pacific Northwest, the LGTBQ+ community is still feeling the loss of Darcelle, who passed away earlier this year. The icon, also known as Walter Cole, was arguably the best known and loved drag queen in the region. Darcelle XV Showplace, the drag bar institution she created, lives on where she and others have performed for decades. So when Portland writer and podcast host Eden Dawn was pitched the idea of beating the world record for the longest continuous drag show (36 hours and 36 minutes in Australia), she knew it couldn’t happen in any other place, with locals in the audience participating and cheering them on. What Dawn ended up producing was a 48-hour extravaganza created with a cast of dozens of performers — 60 drag queens, and an assortment of MCs and stand up comedians, as well as a large and dedicated crew behind the scenes. At the end of the two days, a representative of the Guinness World Records pronounced the record set, and presented performers with the official certificate. Still, that outcome was anything but certain. Any one of a series of mishaps and near misses could have shuttered the whole project. Dawn and Fiona McCann produced a five-part podcast telling the story of the triumphs and the tribulations, called “Slaying a Drag-a-thon,” which is a “sidecast” of their regular show, “We Can’t Print This.” The whole event was also a fundraiser with $309,000 donated to the Trevor Project, which helps LGBTQ+ youth in crisis. Joining us in studio to talk about the highlights and lowlights are Dawn and BinKyee Bellflower, one of the drag queens that helped break the record.
Darcelle was the world's oldest working Drag Queen when she died last year at 92 in Oregon. To honor her and her years of community service to the people of Portland, the city is naming a public plaza Darcelle Plaza. But first, a woman in Key West Florida is challenging men-only, clothing optional resorts, for not allowing women. Then, Beekman 1802 selects Mrs. Potato Head as their spokesperson for their new skincare product. At the peak of drag performance being criminalized across the country, the downtown clothing store Wildfang has partnered with the iconic Darcelle XV Showplace to break a Guinness World Record for the longest drag artist stage show. Kicking off on Monday, the event is also raising $250k for LGBTQ+ youth. So today on City Cast Portland, host Claudia Meza talks with Kevin Cook or, as he's better known, Poison Waters. She's been working at the legendary Darcelle XV Showplace for over 30 years. And since reigning queen Darcelle XV, and world record holder of oldest working drag queen, passed away earlier this year at 92, Poison became the official host. Poison is sharing how she became a part of Darcelle XV Showplace's legacy and why drag performance is so deeply entrenched in Portland culture. Mentioned on the show: Link to DRAG-A-THON event: https://www.wildfang.com/pages/dragathon More information on the proposed district maps: https://www.portland.gov/transition/districtcommission/district-plan And where to fill out the survey to share your thoughts with the city: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YPRFD5R If you want to learn more about Darcelle, listen to our previous episode: Remembering Portland's 92-Year-Old Iconic Drag Queen Who would you like to hear on City Cast Portland? After Portland superstar Darcelle XV, also known as Walter Cole, passed away at the age of 92, Poison Waters and other fellow drag queens at Darcelle XV Showplace hosted a show in her honor, fulfilling Darcelle's wish that the show would go on after her death. Poison Waters, also known as Kevin Cook, is a local legend in her own right, having performed drag for 35 years, and she's set to serve as the Grand Marshal in Portland's Starlight Parade this year, following in the footsteps of Darcelle, who led the parade in 2010. Poison Waters stuck around for a bonus episode after the show, which can be viewed at the bottom of this story.

Pride is celebrated in June to honor the Stonewall Riots, an uprising in New York City that began on June 28, 1969, when police raided The Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village. Protests against the raid lasted for 6 days and served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement around the world.

This week we take a short look into an indigenous South American warrior named Galvarino, who, despite having his hands cut off by Spanish Conquistadors, strapped knives to his stumps to rally his fellow Mapuche community into fighting back. In the news: the Portland Wolverine is sighted again, a promising anti-Alzheimer enzyme, remembering Darcelle, the USS Robert Smalls, a Sriracha shortage (or is there?), REI closes its Portland location, and more.
Darcelle XV (Walter Cole), the world's oldest drag queen, died on March 23, 2023. She was 92. Since 1967, Darcelle has been performing and running the Portland drag venue, Darcelle XV Showplace, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. Trailblazing Portland drag legend Darcelle XV passed away on March 23rd at the age of 92 after a Guinness World Record making career in drag. We were beyond fortunate to interview Darcelle (aka Walter Cole) back in 2019, along with Anthony Hudson aka Carla Rossi (and co-host of Gaylords of Darkness podcast), as part of the Listen Up Podcast festival. In memory of Darcelle, we're sharing our conversation with her here, discussing how she got started in the true Wild West of drag, the power the art form has had on audiences and on Walter, of course the impact of Drag Race, and what the future of drag looks like.Want even more Alright Mary? Today, on a special episode of Footnotes, guest host and Portland Monthly style editor Eden Dawn celebrates drag queen and fashion icon Darcelle's 90th birthday by revisiting a The Long Play interview from 2016. In this excerpt, Dawn, Poison Waters, and Darcelle talk drag styles and all things shiny. The Long Play was a Portland Monthly podcast, featuring unedited conversations with Portland innovators, game changers, and generally fascinating people.
It's the episode so nice, we aired it twice. Walter Cole, a.k.a. Darcelle turned 90 this week. So we decided to re-release our recording of this Portland legend. He's the oldest working drag queen in the world and as such, has the most interesting stories of anyone we've had on our show. He shared with us what the gay club scene was like back in the sixties in Portland, how different it is now, and what his life story has been about. We feel honored and thrilled that we were able to capture this time with the one and only Darcelle.

We're revisiting this episode of The Long Play from 2016 featuring Darcelle XV. Before Stonewall and the legalization of gay marriage, before RuPaul or Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, there was Darcelle XV's. Founded in 1967, it's the longest-running drag revue in the country, with a never-ending parade of bejeweled dresses, feather boas, Cher tunes, and double entendres. Now 86 years old (at the time of this interview), and still hosting multiple shows a night, we sat down with Darcelle and her right-hand queen, Poison Waters, to talk about what drag means and how the club has evolved, and to swap some great old stories. The Long Play was a Portland Monthly podcast, featuring unedited conversations with Portland innovators, game changers, and generally fascinating people.

Don Horn and Kevin Loomis talk about the world premiere of That's No Lady! at Triangle Productions, a new musical chronicling the fantastic life of Portland's own Darcelle. Chances are you know Darcelle, also known as Walter Cole. Donnie has been working on telling the story of this man, who at the age of 37 became a drag sensation before it was ‘popular’. “How did a man put on a dress, sell a ticket, and stay in business for over 50 years? He’s been in business longer than Starbucks!” Kevin plays Darcelle in the show, with book and original song (with lyrics) by donnie, and additional lyrics and music by Tom Grant, Marv/Rindy Ross, Jon Quesenberry, Storm Large, Rody Ortega, Wesley Bowers. This will be a thrilling world premiere at triangle productions!
This week Art and Susan welcome Walter Cole/Darcelle XV! With the help of our friend and Portland luminary Helen Raptis from KATU, we were excited to interview the legendary Darcelle XV, the Oldest Working Drag Queen in the World. Darcelle has been a Portland icon for over 50 years and is being honored with a musical (That's No Lady) opening Sep 19 at PSU's Lincoln Hall, featuring music by Storm Large, Tom Grant, and Marv and Rindy Ross among others. She is also the subject of a book entitiled Darcelle - Looking From My Mirror with a forward by Matt Groenig also scheduled for a Sep 19 release. What a fascinating life. Wonderful stories and such a kind heart, Darcelle has supported the LGBTQ community for decades, speaking in schools about tolerance and staying true to yourself. This was an amazing hour and we feel honored to have had this chance. And we feel super grateful that Helen was willing to join us for this memorable interview. For my first conversation, I was excited to sit down with Darcelle XV. Darcelle has been a local icon and inspiration in Portland, Oregon for over 40 years. Darcelle was previously know as Walter Cole, a boy who grew into a man and did what he thought men should do. He married, got a traditional job and had children. However in his late 30’s he could no longer live the lie of being straight, so, he came out to his wife in the 60’s and set on new journey that led him into another loving relationship with a man for over 50 years and Guinness World Book of records title of the Oldest Working Drag Queen in the world at 87 years of age.Darcelle has been a mentor and an example of strength and courage for gay and straight people everywhere and and is truly a person who is growing old on his own terms, with grace and humor.

Currently, they're sending a percentage of ticket sales for "American Idiot" (June 9–July 2) to the Orlando's LGBT community Center. Portland Music Distributor Closes Doors, Leaving Hundreds of Bands And Labels In The Lurch - 1:50Several hundred small music labels and recording artists around the world — including Portland's Pink Martini, Cappella Roman, Three Leg Torso, and more — are faced with buying their own music back from Portland distributor, Allegro Media Group. Several labels and artists affected by the liquidation told OPB they were not notified by the company about what was happening, and have been desperate to get information. Writer Lindy West Takes On The Trolls With Humor - 8:15Lindy West started her writing career focused on comedy and popular culture at “The Stranger,” a Seattle weekly. But a funny thing happened on the way to a career of movie reviews and standup listings. West started writing about things she couldn’t avoid any more: About being fat. About finding rape jokes offensive and culturally corrosive. And about the vicious responses she got to her outspoken feminism. She captures her hilarious, and at times troubling, experience in "Shrill: Notes From a Loud Woman." Since he first put on a gown, he's gone on to perform two shows a night, five nights a week for decades, transforming his bar into an institution that has influenced generations of Oregonians.Writer Mary Roach On Maggots And Penis Transplants - 24:38Mary Roach has made a name for herself for bringing humor to the darker corners of science with books like "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" and "Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex." The band’s first album, “Masterpiece,” was released by Saddle Creek Records in May.Peter Sagal Takes Us Behind The Scenes On "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!" - 44:45There’s likely no one in less need of an introduction to public radio listeners than NPR host Peter Sagal, who is bringing "Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me!" back to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on June 23–24. We got Sagal on the phone to talk about what it was like to transition from writing plays to comedy, why he has to write 20 jokes just to get one good one, and why it's so hard to poke fun at Donald Trump.
Siblings grow up in the same households for the most part, but their growing-up experience differs greatly. I talked to my sister Darcelle about our young lives, and how we've become friends as adults, while not being friends with our other two sisters.
