Over the weekend, reports emerged that the chair of the British Museum, ex-chancellor George Osborne, has been holding ‘secret' talks with the Greek prime minister over the return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece. Also known as the Elgin Marbles, the pieces have become symbolic of a wider debate about colonial legacy and restitution in the cultural world. Supporters of the marbles staying put argue they were obtained legally, but Greece says they were stolen – so should they be returned? This podcast was brought to you thanks to the support of readers of The Times and The Sunday Times. Cameron Diaz had a lot going on. Her latest movie, Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, was about to hit theaters. With the release just days away, a photographer named John Rutter reached out to her. John had photos of Cameron from about a decade earlier, when she was a 19-year-old model. He'd shot the photos for a racy S&M lingerie editorial. He told Cameron that people were offering him millions of dollars for them. Then he offered to sell them to her, for a discount. Then Brandi tells us about the murder of Leslie Vaughn. Leslie was a successful criminal defense attorney whose work sometimes put him in close contact with violent people. So when Leslie was shot in his home one evening, the list of potential suspects could have been long. But the behavior of Leslie's son, Brian Vaughn, made investigators think that perhaps the killer was right under their nose. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Photographer convicted of trying to blackmail Cameron Diaz,” by Michelle Caruso for the Seattle Times “Cameron Diaz photographer convicted for topless photo plot,” by Gil Kaufman for MTV.com “‘I'm proud of topless shots,'” by David Sanderson for the Evening Standard “Cameron Diaz photographer headed to jail,” by Todd Peterson for People.com “Actress takes the stand in trial of photographer,” by Cara Mia DiMassa for The Los Angeles Times “Man who blackmailed Cameron Diaz over topless photos faces jail,” by Catherine Elsworth for the Daily Telegraph “Photos develop into court case,” by Cara Mia DiMassa for The Los Angeles Times “Jail for Diaz dirt,” by David K. Li for the New York Post In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Shattered Innocence” episode Forensic Files “Brian Vaughn: A Student-Athlete Kills” by Rebecca Reisner, forensicfilesnow.com “Teen Convicted of Dad's Murder” by Associated Press, The Marshall News Messenger “Brian Leslie Vaughn v. This is an auspicious week in aviation history. 13 years ago, on January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, on a flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing due to their low altitude, pilots Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan.[1] All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with only a few serious injuries.   This water landing of a powerless jetliner with no deaths became known as the Miracle on the Hudson,[2] and a National Transportation Safety Board official described it as "the most successful ditching in aviation history".[3] The Board rejected the notion that the pilot could have avoided ditching by returning to LaGuardia or diverting to nearby Teterboro Airport. Everyone knows this story. It was dramatized in the 2016 film Sully, starring Tom Hanksas Sullenberger.Today we have 5 amazing guests who are intimately involved in this story, Vallie Collins, David Sanderson, Ben Bostic, Stephen Mallon and Paula Paul.   Thanks for listening to the show! Turns out there is so much available, from many different brands. We went first to Best Buy and then to a locally-owned, dedicated home theater store. Best Buy was disappointing – they had only one set of recliners on display. The dedicated store was better in that they had a few for us to try, and sales materials on all the other options available. Our third try was the charm – we went to a furniture store, just to see what they had. We hit the jackpot. They had probably a dozen different styles to try, and surprisingly, a very knowledgeable salesperson. We ended up purchasing a model from Palliser. Here are some of the things we learned in our shopping experience: Recliners are available as singles, or as rows of two or more. They can be aligned straight or curved so that they each point to the center of the screen. Since you mix and match, you can design, for example, two straight in the middle surrounded on each end by recliners curved in. Boy do they come with features. Ours have motorized recline, motorized headrest, two memory settings, and lighted cupholders and ground effects with three colors and four brightness settings, which can be independently set. The LEDs were fun the first time, but they're standard, so we have them. Options include bass shakers, massage, and probably more. The arms have storage and come with grommets, so we ordered swivel tables. You can also get tablet holders and wine glass holders. As with most custom-ordered furniture, you can select the grade and color of leather, and they'll be delivered in several weeks. Since the floor model had a grade and color we liked, we ordered from stock and got them within days. After using them for a few weeks, I'm very glad we made the investment. Here are some things that I'd like to share from our experience: Our buttons are on the cupholders. Other models have buttons on the side. When you're reclined, the last thing you want to do is to have to get up to find the buttons to make adjustments. Make sure the buttons are where you can easily reach them. The motorized headrest is critical. Without it you'll likely have to use one or more pillows to get your head to a comfortable viewing position. The seats are higher than the couches we used. This works out well for us – we're still below the center point of our 65” tv on a standard-height tv stand, and it's more immersive. We ordered two seats in a in a curved configuration so that we're both pointed toward the center of the screen – the way I recommend going. The seats are not attached to each other – pros and cons. Pro: very easy to move to the perfect position. Con: there's not much weight holding them down, so you really have to put them in the upright position before getting out. While we had white-glove service included, I watched and they're easy to install for do-it-yourselfers. The recliners each come in two pieces, they're easy to move around the house and down narrow stairways, and hooking up the cables to power is foolproof due to modular connections. Like speakers, an investment in quality seating should last for several hardware upgrade cycles. I highly recommend comfortable seating as a sure-fire way to increase home theater enjoyment. You've heard of turning your mess into your message, right? Well what about turning you mess into a movie? And then that movie becomes a blockbuster hit staring Tom Hanks. That's what happened to todays feature guest. Few people can say they survived a plane crash. Let alone a plain crash in the Hudson River. Our feature guest today has experienced more in life than most would ever expect. Now he is making every moment matter. In fact David Sanderson has written the book called Moments Matter. This was a very entertaining and valuable conversation. Since the Miracle on the Hudson, considered to be the most successful ditching in aviation history, Dave Sanderson has built a career as a motivational speaker, mentor and author. In his presentations, he shares and teaches “The 12 Resources to create your own Personal Flight Plan TM,”precepts that enabled him to become a top producer in some of the largest sales organizations in the world and ultimately enabled him to survive the plane crash. In addition to being a top sales producer, he was Director of Security for Internationally renowned speaker, Tony Robbins. Sanderson has appeared at countless fundraisers that have raised over $8.56 million for the American Red Cross. He continues to donate his speaker services to the organization as an expression of gratitude for the care he received from the first person he saw after he was rescued and transferred to land in New Jersey: a Red Cross volunteer with a blanket. https://menofabundance.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Moments-Matter-Cover-2.png ()In his new book, Moments Matter, Sanderson discusses lessons learned from the Miracle on the Hudson and how to take a potentially tragic experience and turn it into an opportunity to survive and “create your own flight plan. “ A firsthand account of his experience aboard US Airways Flight 1549 appears in the book Brace for Impact: Miracle on the Hudson Survivors Share Their Stories of Near Death and Hope for New Life by Dorothy Firman and Kevin Quirk. He has also participated in upcoming documentaries produced and directed by Rick Lopez, which is scheduled to be released in 2017 and for NHK in Tokyo to be aired January 2017. In the movie ‘Sully’ directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Tom Hanks, viewers will see the “untold” story of what Sanderson and the other 154 people on US Airways 1549 experienced on that fateful day. Sanderson was born in Peoria, Illinois, and grew up in Hillsboro, Ohio and Winchester, Virginia. He attended James Madison University and graduated with a BBA in International Business. He began his professional career in restaurant management, and went on to work as a National Sales Manager for ADP; Management Consultant for KPMG, Senior Vice-President of Sales for Genesis 10; Application Sales Manager for Oracle, and Security Director for Robbins Research International, Inc., An https://www.tonyrobbins.com/ (Anthony Robbins) Company.
