On this episode of Talking Guitars, we've got some breaking news—David Lee Roth is playing a show near me, and you know I'm going! I'll be reporting back with all the details, so stay tuned! We also dove into the explosive Gibson vs. Dean court case and broke down the verdict—this one's got the guitar world buzzing! A jury in a second trial has found Dean Guitars' parent company Armadillo guilty of trademark infringement and counterfeiting of Gibson's guitar designs, after Armadillo appealed against the initial ruling. Plus, a huge shoutout to Bay Area Rich for the awesome Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tote bag—we opened it up live on the show! And that's not all—we unboxed some killer gear that we'll be demoing in future videos, so make sure to like, share, and subscribe to catch it all!
We are excited to have Dean Zelinsky on the show. While still in his teens, Dean founded his first guitar company, Dean Guitars, starting it from scratch. He talks to us about how a couple of trips to the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan inspired his dream. After setting up his first factory in Evanston, Illinois, Dean went on to build iconic guitars for musicians like Dimebag Darrel, Billy Gibbons, Michael Schenker, Leslie West and Brad Paisley. Dean later moved on and currently builds guitars as Dean Zelinsky Private Label Guitars. He shares with us some of the innovations he's incorporated into his latest designs. We also talk about a few crazy stories and some of his favorite things about Chicago. Dean also has his own podcast, The Dean Zelinsky Show and you can hear even more stories about his guitar journey at https://www.deanzelinskyguitars.com/pages/podcast.Time Stamps:2:15: when did you first show an interest in guitars?4:36: When did you first start to tinker with how guitars worked?7:40: Did you really think you could figure out how to repair a guitar?10:30: What in you made you a doer?12:30: What was the reason behind the Gibson Guitars tour?17: How did you start the company?21: How much back and forth to make the guitar perfect?25:13: How do you start to build the company/approach guitar stores to sell your guitars?32:35: What is your mindset as things are taking off?35: What changed everything for Dean Guitars?42: Is this the time that you decide you wanted to sell the company?45:16: When did you get rock stars playing your guitars/how did you sell guitars backstage?54:37: How did the fur guitars come to be?60: What's still driving you to make guitars?70: Favorite venue to show your guitars, favorite venue to see a show?71:30: thin crust or deep dish fan?73:35: What makes Chicago unique?76:30: What's your go to cheap drink?79:25: Anything you'd like to plug on the way out?

Behind the scenes, he's worked artist relations and product management for ESP & Fender. Drop D tuning can open up an entire new sonic soundscape, but do you know how best to practice your shapes and scales in this alternate tuning? On today's episode of Acoustic Tuesday, you're going to get a lesson behind the acoustic guitar lick of the week. Every Tuesday, I offer you a quick lesson on learning an awesome lick. But this week, you'll get to see the theory, rationale, and benefits behind learning the lick this week. Specifically, this lick focuses on drop D tuning for the acoustic guitar. Drop D tuning is when you turn your low E string to a low D. This gives you awesome bass sounds and can infuse your playing with bluesy mojo sounds. If you aren't a fan of the blues (to which I say, check yourself!), drop D tuning is used in a variety of different genres. From American Primitive to modern fingerstyle, you're sure to find a great way to apply drop D tuning to your playing. Besides covering drop D tuning, you'll also hear from TAC Family member Shannon and how building a solid guitar routine helped her in a difficult point in her life. Perhaps her story could inspire you, no? If you're a drummer or regularly work with drums, you're really going to like my guest on the podcast this week since it's filled with things you probably never knew about the instrument. It's Daniel Glass, who's an award-winning drummer, author, historian and educator based in New York City. He previously appeared on Episode 305. Daniel is widely recognized as an authority on classic American drumming and the evolution of American Popular Music. He's recorded and performed all over the world with a diverse roster of top artists, including Brian Setzer, Bette Midler, Liza Minnelli, Jose Feliciano, the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, and even KISS front man Gene Simmons. Since 2011, he has been the house drummer every Monday night at New York's legendary Birdland Jazz Club. As an educator, Daniel has published five books and three DVDs, created a curriculum that's used by hundreds of music educators in schools across the U.S. and Canada, and is a regular contributor to publications like Modern Drummer, DRUM and Classic Drummer. During the interview we talked about what caused the drum kit to evolve from marching band, how one of the original duties for a drummer was to provide sound effects, how the high hat got its name, programs for home school students, what it's like to put out a record in today's business climate, and much more. Find out more about his latest album BAM here. I spoke with Daniel from his home in Manhattan. On the intro I'll take a look at Sony Music's latest expanded unrecoupment program, Gibson winning its trademark infringement case against Dean Guitars.
