Matt Crawford speaks with journalist and author Shefali Luthra about her book, Undue Burden: Life and Death Decisions in Post-Roe America. On June 24, 2022, Roe v. Wade was overturned, and the impact was immediate: by 2024, abortion was virtually unavailable or significantly restricted in 21 states. In Undue Burden, reporter Shefali Luthra traces the unforgettable stories of patients faced with one of the most personal decisions of their lives. Luthra also points out that these laws have an impact on all of us, not just those seeking an abortion. IVF, Stem cell and medical research laws are all impacted.
Today, we hear from journalist Shefali Luthra about her new book, "Undue Burden," which the San Francisco Chronicle called "an impeccably researched, clearheaded and frankly terrifying assessment of just how grave the situation in post-Roe America is."

June 24th marks the two-year anniversary of The Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Because Reimagining Love is a show devoted to relationships and helping people cultivate relationships founded in empowerment and care, Dr. Alexandra wanted to shine a light on the pervasive and pernicious impacts of the Supreme Court's decision on individuals, couples, and families in the United States. In fact, abortion has become virtually unavailable or significantly restricted in 21 states leaving pregnant people and their loved ones across the country facing the fears and roadblocks in their attempts to access reproductive healthcare. In this episode Dr. Alexandra facilitates a roundtable discussion with two strong voices in the field who help us better understand the mental health and the relational health effects of living in Post-Roe America– and how restriction of access to abortion exacerbates economic and racial inequality. Shefali Luthra is a health policy journalist who recently released her first book, Undue Burden: Life and Death Decisions in Post-Roe America, and Dr. Pooja Lakshmin is a perinatal psychiatrist and the author of Real Self Care: A Transformative Program for Redefining Wellness.Shefali and Dr. Pooja's powerful insights will resonate with listeners who have experienced these impacts firsthand as well as those watching the landscape unfold from afar.Relevant Links:Read Undue Burden: Life and Death Decisions in Post-Roe America by Shefali LuthraRead Real Self-Care: A Transformative Program for Redefining Wellness (Crystals, Cleanses, and Bubble Baths Not Included) by Dr. Pooja LakshminThe UCSF Turnaway StudyTwo years after Roe's overturn, there are more abortions in America — but they're harder to get by Shefali Luthra on the 19th Connect with Shefali on X or through emailLearn more about Dr. Pooja's work, subscribe to her newsletter, and connect with her on InstagramOrder Dr. Alexandra's new book, Love Every DaySubscribe to Dr. Alexandra's NewsletterSubmit a Listener Question Join Dr. Alexandra's five-day retreat with the Modern Elder Academy — Get 10% off with code 'GF10'Try Kion Aminos risk-free for 60-days with a money-back guarantee. Despite a recent uptick, President Biden's approval rating and his poll numbers against Donald Trump are far from stellar. And with inflation remaining stubbornly high and gas prices moving up, Biden and his party seem eager to focus voters on abortion rights — and Republicans in Arizona and Florida have given him plenty of material to work with. To understand how the abortion issue might play out in November — and how the Dobbs decision is already affecting millions of people across the country, even in states without bans — we turn to three experts: Shefali Luthra covers abortion for The 19th, and her book, “Undue Burden, Life and Death Decisions in Post Roe America,” comes out in May; Sarah McCammon is a national political correspondent for NPR and the co-host of the NPR Politics Podcast. Her book, “Exvangelicals: Loving, Living and Leaving the White Evangelical Church,” came out in March; and Mary Jo Pitzl is a senior state government reporter for the Arizona Republic who's been reporting in Arizona for decades. Dr. Lachlan McIver – Life and death decisions...with TRE's Giles Brown
The impossible job of a doctor in some of the world's wildest places. After Lachlan McIver's father suffers a sudden, fatal heart attack it sends him into a spiral of grief and outrage. This tragedy inspires him to become a doctor and he eventually finds his calling – providing care for communities in some of the most remote and neglected parts of the world. In this no-holds-barred memoir, Lachlan recounts his experiences treating patients and tackling health problems across dozens of countries, from rural communities around Australia and the islands of the South Pacific, through natural disasters and civil war zones, to the headquarters of the World Health Organization and Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) in Switzerland. Lachlan is forced to confront not only the frustrations of trying to provide medical care in extremely under-resourced environments, but broader crises such as health inequities, climate change and drug-resistant infections. He also faces his own personal battles, including with depression, alcohol abuse and bankruptcy. Find out more at: https://drlachlanmciver.com/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr Lachlan McIver is an Australian doctor who's worked in some of the world's wildest and most remote places. He specialised as a rural generalist and his work in humanitarian medicine has taken him from remote Indigenous communities in Australia, to the Pacific, to natural disasters and civil war zones in the Middle East and Africa. These days, Dr McIver is based in Geneva, where he works with Médecins Sans Frontières as a Tropical Diseases & Planetary Health Advisor. He's also just written his first book; Life and Death Decisions, using his wide-spanning career to examine some of the biggest health challenges of our age; climate change, health inequities, and drug-resistant infections.
Christopher Hartnick never expected his work as a doctor to intersect with political discussions about abortion and the right of pregnant people to make choices about their own bodies. Yet as a pediatric ear, nose, and throat physician who specializes in treating babies and children who have difficulty breathing, he's had up-close looks at how prospective parents make life-or-death decisions over the course of a pregnancy. This week, Hartnick discusses a risky procedure performed at birth for which parents must choose, at multiple stages, whether to prioritize the mother's life or the child's.

A brave story of a mom choosing life for her baby never gets old. Listen in and let this inspire you to be a mighty voice for the preborn children in our nation and their parents.
In a year when Covid-19 has had a devastating effect on families, with loved ones dying sometimes alone in hospital or without the usual funeral rites, Tom Sutcliffe and guests discuss mortality and what it means to have ‘a good death'. In her latest book, Should We Stay Or Should We Go, the writer Lionel Shriver explores a number of alternative endings. The couple at the centre of her novel make a pact to end their lives when they hit 80, to avoid a slow decline either physically or mentally. As Shriver looks at how that decision might play out in reality, she's arguing for a more open discussion about the end of life. It's a view shared by the consultant geriatrician David Jarrett. In 33 Meditations on Death – Notes from the Wrong End of Medicine he draws on family stories and case histories from his three decades treating those who become old and frail. Jarret's book is an impassioned plea for everyone – old and young – to engage and make plans for the end. The playwright Jack Thorne is part of the collaborative team (with designer Bunny Christie and director Jeremy Herrin) behind the National Theatre's new play, After Life, based on Hirokazu Kore-eda's award-winning film. It follows a group of strangers as they grapple with the question: if you could spend eternity with just one precious memory, what would it be? Although all the characters are deceased, the play is a celebration of life, and about what matters to us most. Photo credit: Mark Kohn Producer: Katy Hickman
Living in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, the morality of having to make life-and-death decisions in a healthcare setting has taken center stage. Who decides which patients can receive lifesaving treatment if it's in short supply? Who decides when it's right for a dying patient to no longer prolong life? What if patients and family disagree? In this episode of “Innovation Health,” we talk with the Dr. Susan Nelson, chair of Ochsner Health's bioethics committee, to take a more nuanced look at how healthcare providers deal with ethical dilemmas, and how life-and-death decisions are made.
Molly and Carl finally get their dream jobs as vets but soon learn it's not all cuddles with cute animals — big and important decisions have to be made. Like whether to de-sex a pet or when it might be best to euthanise a much-loved furry member of the family. Stephen Sackur speaks to the paediatric neurosurgeon Owase Jeelani. Brain surgery carries with it an awesome burden of responsibility. And within neurosurgery there are particular challenges that take the physical and ethical pressure to an extreme. Imagine doing complex brain surgery on small children; then imagine trying to split conjoined twin babies joined at the head. Mr Jeelani's work has made headlines around the world. How does he deal with the stress of life and death decision-making?
Brian from Lifejustsu.com returns for another deep and dark discussion of the increasing confrontational framing and unrelenting trauma of the series' third act. The ride will only get faster from here! New music in the episode also courtesy of Brian. Let the punk sorcery BEGIN :::.-)

This week we discuss the only story in the news: the Covid-19 pandemic. But first, I recently spoke with Professor Susan Shapiro of the American Bar Foundation about her recent book, Speaking for the Dying: Life-and-Death Decisions in Intensive Care. Professor Shapiro studies the complex context people navigate to make treatment decisions for others in intensive care. The result: An illuminating revelation of the challenges people encounter, and some helpful adjustments we can make in how we approach the prospect of speaking for others in such emotionally difficult times. Segment 1 -- Susan Shapiro on Speaking for the Dying: Life-and-Death Decisions in Intensive Care. Segment 2 -- Reflections on the only story in the news--and what we must remember as it is often treated it as such.

Captain Larry Brudnicki is today’s guest. Captain Brudnicki directed the dramatic rescue missions during the infamous Perfect Storm. He is the man responsible for making critical decisions that meant life or death for those trapped in the storm, and for his own crew. In his first-hand account of the events, Captain Brudnicki opens up and separates the reality from the movie version, and talks about the courage of his crew, and the deep sense of duty they felt as they braved hurricane force winds and nearly 100 foot seas for 4 straight days. He’ll tell you what was going through his mind that day... And he’ll tell you how and why he made the decisions he made.

Dr. Jeffrey Kahn is the Director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics . When he stops by Midday , we talk about all manner of complex dilemmas. Today, we?re having a conversation about the ethical questions surrounding the case of Charlie Gard . He?s the infant in Britain who died on Friday, a week shy of his first birthday. He was critically ill for all of his short life. He had a rare genetic condition that left him brain damaged and unable to move or breathe on his own. His parents sought permission from UK courts to do what they thought was best for their son. First they wanted to take him to the U.S. for experimental treatment. More recently, his caregivers said that there was nothing more than could be done to help him and that he would die without artificial life support. His parents wanted to take him home from the hospital to die. In both instances, the courts ruled that what the parents wanted was not in the best interest of little Charlie. This sad case reminds
