The Ada Hayden Herbarium preserves hundreds of thousands of specimens, including some collected by George Washington Carver. And, as the “Universe of Art” podcast turns one, listeners discuss solar music boxes and what it's like making art with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.Inside Iowa State's Herbarium With 700,000 Plant SpecimensHerbariums are plant libraries—they contain fragile specimens of plants collected from near and far, and they are meticulously described and cataloged so that someone can reference them in the future. At Iowa State University, the Ada Hayden Herbarium contains more than 700,000 specimens, about half of which are from Iowa.Ira talks with herbarium's director, Dr. Lynn Clark, and curator Deb Lewis about how plants are preserved, why herbariums are so important, and what it takes to manage a plant archive.Science-Inspired Art From Two ‘Universe of Art' ListenersLast week, we kicked off a first-anniversary celebration for Universe of Art, our science-meets-art spinoff podcast. A lot of listeners have written in since the start of the podcast, telling us about the science-inspired art they've made in their spare time.Last week, host D. Peterschmidt spoke with Todd Gilens, a visual designer who worked with the city of Reno, Nevada, to create a mile-long poem on the city's sidewalks about the connections between urbanism and stream ecology. This time, we'll meet two listeners. Craig Colorusso is a punk rock guitarist-turned-sound artist who creates public sculptures and experiences that enhance visitors' connection to nature. Two of his projects, Sun Boxes and The Bridges At Coler, use solar panels to play reflective, calming music he composed. “You have this idea where you are in nature and you are listening to something that is powered by nature,” he said. “I think that's perfect.”And we'll meet a listener who prefers to go by Chris, who was an engineer and avid artist who made mosaics and crocheted before developing Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). It's a debilitating condition characterized by extreme fatigue that can't be improved by rest, and can also include brain fog, pain, and dizziness. It's similar to what many Long COVID patients experience. Chris' condition is considered severe, and caused her to lose the use of her hands, and thus her preferred art mediums. However, Chris could still use her left hand with a rollerball mouse and realized that she could use programs like Chaotica to create fractals that she adds to collages in Photoshop, resulting in colorful collages. “They're just beautiful and I'm doing art again and I'm so happy about it,” she said.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Even though they were classmates at West Point in its first class with women, Deb Lewis and Doug Adams did not meet until 17 years later at the Pentagon in 1997, marrying two years later. Their complementary yet different approaches to life and learning create countless opportunities to serve others. Deb’s approach is more experimental (think ‘recon by fire’) versus Doug’s often theoretical (think ‘observation’). During her 34-year military career, Colonel Deb commanded three US Army Corps of Engineer Districts, including a $2.1B reconstruction program in combat. She’s a Harvard MBA who founded Mentally Tough Women (MTW). Now, her proven strategies, insights and tools arm women with exactly what they’ll need in good times and times of crisis. Doug is also a retired Army officer and a licensed attorney. He bicycled 18,067 miles through all 50 states in one year in support of our veterans, military and their families. Colonel Deb Lewis, (Ret.) has lived a life filled with stressful choices that she chose. Amina Deb Lewis, founder of Transforming to Essence, shares a transmission and deep spiritual teaching about what dance lessons have taught her about Accessing Guidance! Yes, everything in life has messages for us about how to deepen knowledge and evolve the soul as we travel this life journey. All the answers are with you, and you can tap into them. Amina discusses how enlightenment & expansion of consciousness IS NOT the same thing as evolution. One doesn’t actually evolve until they bring the information that comes from enlightenment & expansion of consciousness into their actions of every day life. That’s where embodiment comes in, but how does one actually DO that?!? Join us for this enlivening discussion and healing experience to learn more.

A famous picture in the Sistine Chapel is of God in the heavenly realm reaching down to Adam’s extended index finger. Looking at it now, Amina Deb Lewis realized that they’re not in contact anymore. Amina Deb Lewis has been a seeker and student in esoteric, spiritual and scientific studies for over 40 years. She saw that God is no longer is reaching down towards Adam, and Adam is no longer striving and struggling to reach. God is just there and open in a receiving type of way. Whenever we have major shifts, whenever we have crossed a point in our collective consciousness, what is available to us has changed and we see that picture in the outer realms somewhere. For Amina, this is a sign that we are no longer reaching outside of ourselves to find fulfillment, to define God, and to look for something that is beyond. We have collectively reached a point where we’re connecting with God through the power within us, within our hearts.
My two guests on my April 17th episode have stayed positive through some extremely trying circumstances. Colonel Deb Lewis, Retired Army was in the first female graduating class at West Point, served in the Army for 34 years in command positions and her husband, Colonel Doug Adams, also retired from the Army, has had his share of command positions that would lead to either or both of them not being the positive people they are today. So how does one stay positive in the real world? We are not talking paste a smile on your face and recite platitudes of positivity. We are talking staying positive on the inside and the outside. Letting positivity be who you are on a daily basis and shining that light on the world even when you are challenged by negativity all around in the news, on the streets and perhaps even in your home. Deb and Doug share insights on specific strategies you can begin using immediately to shift your perspective on events and people all around you, and even yourself, so that you can begin living positive in the real world! Deb is a daughter, sister, wife, mother, pioneer, retired Colonel, Combat Veteran, Infinite-Win Engineer, Harvard MBA, RV Driver, Author, Speaker, Leader, Veterans Day Parade Chair, Adventure Guide and so much more... Doug is a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, retired Lieutenant Colonel, cyclist, Lawyer, Author, Speaker, Leader, Community Non-profit Leader, Adventure Guide and so much more... Deb & Doug grew up wanting to make a difference. They both graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (est. 1802) in the first class with women, married others, have kids (all adults now), divorced, and generally followed life’s typical script. Instead of settling for less, life had something else in mind. Once they finally met each other and and moved past their old mindsets, they fell in love over 18 years ago and began to reimagine their life. After Deb retired from the military, they went on a one-year, fifty-state 18k mile bicycling tour to raise awareness of veteran and military issues. Following that, they imagined where they wanted to live—some place warm with a view of the ocean and mountains. From their dream home in Hilo, Hawaii, now they imagine helping others build stronger relationships, magically achieve more, and love their lives, as they fulfill their dreams.

This is my birthday show and a very special one for me becuase of my guest. I like to reflect on all the blessings I have and one of them is the many freedoms I have been privileged to enjoy. Those privileges did not and do not come without a price. One of those prices is met every day by those who serve in our military. Putting their lives in harm's way to protect our freedoms. My dad served in the Army during the Korean War. Right up until the day he died his time of service to our country was the proudest moment of his life. The lessons he learned about leadership, success, communication and moving forward to achieve goals served him well in his post-Army career. My guest today was in the first graduating class of women at West Point. She not only survived the hazing and outright hostility from the male cadets and staff that felt a woman should not be there she thrived and went on to get graduate degrees from Harvard University and a Bronze Star before retiring after 34 years in the Army as a Colonel. On this week's show we talk about how you can bring out your best when stressed, how to grab your own bull by the tail to break the cycle and the personal lessons that led her to the success she has today and even what her definition of success is. You might be surprised. Deb Lewis brings numerous unique and varied experiences from her trail-blazing 34 year military career to Sunrise Aloha, the personal development adventure LLC she shares with her husband Doug Adams. They offer rich stories, tools, and helpful insights so many more can thrive in the midst of ongoing challenges, instead of becoming derailed in their personal and professional lives. During her remarkable military career, Deb led three Brigade/Battalion-level commands, including a $3 billion reconstruction program in Baghdad and Al Anbar Provinces during combat in Iraq; the Seattle District, where she oversaw 850 employees responsible for constructing, operating, and regulating military and civil works projects; and the Philadelphia District where she led 500 employees responsible for the construction, operation and regulation of military and civil works projects. Col. Deb also held numerous other key command and staff positions including the Inspector General for Washington State, as the confidential advisor to The Adjutant General, Washington National Guard; Senior Engineer Requirements Officer, Joint Staff, Antiterrorism/Force Protection (J-34), supporting the Joint Chief of Staff Chairman's responsibilities before and after 9/11; co-chair of 220+ member worldwide team that produced Department of Defense facility protection standards; Company Commander, Fort Bragg during Grenada; Engineer Battalion Operations Officer and Executive Officer; Chief, Military Engineering Division, US Army Pacific Command (USARPAC) - responsible for treaty nations and US territories throughout the Asia-Pacific region; and Staff Officer, Congressional Activities Division for the Chief of Staff of the Army. Today, Deb knows how to bring out the best in everyone, and is unafraid to challenge long-held assumptions to uncover the real truth about interpersonal relationships, leadership, organizational behavior, communication and project management.
