Jason, Brian, and Deborah discussed the value of podcasting for hosts, businesses, guests, and of course listeners. The also shared their thoughts on developing your show, what makes a podcast stand out, and more. The Value of Podcasting - Jason: It is the most intimate form of content creation there is. - Deborah: Humility and curiosity are an important part of any brand. Conversation enable people to be – and feel – seen and heard - Brian: It's a great way to be immersed in something while doing something else, to connect with people, and to learn things What Makes a Podcast Stand Out - Jason: Specificity of topic; what's your show's differentiator? And, if it has some sort of “show business” polish, even better. - Brian: Find a topic you get into and can go really in depth. Assume nobody cares when you start. And find a way to make them care - Deborah: Be dynamic with voice and bring in dynamic guests. If someone is not dynamic – not great at showing their passion/enthusiasm – it will not be a great conversation Also - Jason: Prep your guests; send instructions - Brian: Do practice eps/exhibition matches to see how things work before you start recording - Deborah: Know what tone you want for your show Goals - Jason: You have 4000 characters for your podcast description – take advantage of all those characters - Deborah: Have a dream box and fill it up with dream guests for your show - Brian: If you are not excited about your show, figure out why and see if you can do something to get excited about it again. Don't give up on it Final Thoughts - Brian: Focus. Set aside time to get things done - Deborah: Stay in conversation - Jason: Take time out to take care of yourself and spend time with your family - Brian: The questions you ask all the interesting people you interview … remember to ask those questions of the people you love too Learn More: Jason Falls: JasonFalls.com Brian Fishbach: BrianFishbach.com Deborah Pardes: Deborah Pardes.com Debra Eckerling: TheDEBMethod.com Learn more about your ad choices. On this episode of The DEB Show podcast, host Debra Eckerling discusses the art and craft of storytelling with authors Rob Kutner, Richard Walter, and Orly Zeewy. Rob is a humor writer, whose titles include Snot Goblins & Other Tasteless Tales; Richard (The Whole Picture, Deadpan) is also a screenwriter, consultant, and educator; and Orly's book is Ready, Launch, Brand: The Lean Marketing Guide for Startups. Rob, Richard, and Orly share their takes on storytelling – for fiction, non-fiction, and business – including story structure and standing out, as well as tips and anecdotes. About Story - Richard: Every story is a portrait of the creator; it's not a window, it's a mirror - Rob: A story is a transfer of energy; transferring our experience to an audience's mind - Orly: Stories are a living, breathing thing. They evoke powerful emotions and insights. When creating the story around your business, the hero is the solution (the brand); the villain is what keeps your client up at night. What Stops People from Telling Good Stories - Richard: People write too much. They start before the beginning and end after the end - Rob: There is a fear sometimes that people won't get rid of an idea because they think they won't come up with anything better. You find what works by figuring out what doesn't work - Orly: People have a tendency to try to talk to everyone. You want to tell a story that will be meaningful for the person who hears it How to Develop Your Voice - Orly: Be authentic and so memorable someone says: Where have you been all my life? - Rob: Try as many genres and mediums as you can until you find the right fit - Richard: Listen to your own voice and get out of your own way. Hear it and then economize. Everything the audience sees and hears has to have a purpose: to move the story forward Goals - Rob: Pick something you are doing with a storytelling component, and start with the ending/the feeling of the ending - Orly: Identify the villain of your client's story (what are they struggling with) and how you are helping them - Richard: All story is about identity. Who am I? How do I know for sure? Paint a self portrait, find our more about yourself Final Thoughts - Orly: Ask a lot of questions, listen more than you speak, and when you don't know your value, ask your clients why they work with you - Rob: A story is bridge between your mind and your heart and other people. People would rather hear a story, rather, feel a story, that hear a fact - Richard: What we – writers – do is crazy. Stop being so sensible and rational about it. On this episode of The DEB Show, host Debra Eckerling talks about Creating Courses with Course Creation Expert Nancy Giere and Business Growth & Marketing Strategist Jason Van Orden. Nancy and Jason share the why and how of creating courses, what stops people from taking and creating courses (hint: part of it is overwhelm), and more. Why Create Courses? How Do Books Fit In? - Jason: You can take your intellectual property farther - Nancy: Most people need to have a course and a book. You want to bundle your brilliance in different ways - Nancy: The more ways you engage, the more people you can serve - Jason: It's helpful to have course ideas in mind when you are writing a book. You can build into your book different ways to communicate with your readers The First Steps - Jason: Know who your course is for and what is the outcome? Be specific. - Nancy: Identify what are they going to be able to do/know/feel after they complete your course – what's the transformation? It will give you, the creator, focus - Jason: Break it down into meaningful milestones. Milestones = lessons - Nancy: Also decide if it's a course or courses? More Tips - Jason: Use the tech and tools you already have: Zoom, Google docs - Nancy: Test your content in a format that's easy to change. And invest in a good microphone and lighting - Nancy: Make your videos as concise as possible. Pre-write the content. A teleprompter keeps you on point. - Jason: Sometimes you can create course materials where you are not on camera Goals - Jason: Do customer discovery interviews, when you have that information, it makes everything else so much easier - Nancy: Look at what you already have to see where you can mine for content for your course. You can also look at AI for content ideas. Think of AI as you assistant; a starting point. Final Thoughts - Jason: You are someone's playlist. There's something about you and what you provide that will draw the right people toward you - Nancy: Often times with music, fans start by loving a single song and then see what else the musician offers. Think about what individual course you can create that will bring your audience to you and get everything started Learn more about: Nancy Giere: https://nancygiere.com Jason Van Orden: https://jasonvanorden.com Debra Eckerling: https://TheDEBMethod.com Learn more about your ad choices. What are your goals? More importantly, do you write them down? How often do you refer to them? Or are you like me and have vague ideas of what you want to accomplish in your head, but they kind of morph and change depending on the day? Certainly, we're more disciplined about business goals. They typically have to be articulated in strategies and presentations, discussed in meetings and conference calls, probably ad nauseum. But they're important to have, to revisit frequently and to refer to when making strategic decisions for your business. Debra Eckerling is a goals strategist. She helps entrepreneurs, executives and employees identify and make a plan for personal and professional goals. She's even got a clever methodology … the DEB Method … that is spelled out in her book Your Goal Guide. I'm familiar with Deb because her weekly live stream show and podcast, called The DEB Show, is a sister podcast of this one on the Marketing Podcast Network. I've had the pleasure of sitting in on her weekly themed discussion. It's well worth the subscription, the links to which we'll post in the show notes. But Debra is also an influencer away from the marketing space, too. She's a foodie writer and podcaster, too. Her show Taste Buds with Deb digs into her culinary side with guests to discuss and debate various food-related topics. It's distributed by the Jewish Journal where she has been a contributor for a while. Whether you're a brand or agency marketer, a service provider in the influencer space or a content creator, you could certainly use a refresher on goal setting and goal getting. So I asked Deb to join us this week to talk about goals, the DEB Method and her experiences as a foodie creator. We'll probably get hungry and set a goal of satiating that need on today's show.
