Media critic Matt Goldberg returns as we temporarily pause our Spidey Super-Stories miniseries to discuss the unstoppable cultural phenomenon known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with a look at the book that started it all—Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 (and also #2) by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird! Before the seven different movies (including the well-received new “Mutant Mayhem”), the animated series, the video games and the action figures, there was just a self-published black-and-white comic riffing on Frank Miller's Daredevil run with a brilliant title. How did this modest 40-page comic spawn a decades-spanning multimedia juggernaut? And does it have what it takes to enter that Forbidden Kingdom known as ... The Comics Canon? In This Episode: · The Turtles Generation · The part of the Turtles' origin that requires suspension of disbelief · “What if Ultron was a chicken?” · The 80s rash of Turtles “parodies” · Usagi Yojimbo · The Last Ronin · Lynda Barry's Poodle With a Mohawk · The Police Story trilogy · Batman: Failsafe Vol. 1 · Check out Matt's Substack, Commentary Track Join us in two weeks as we swing back into Spidey Super Stories with a Juggernaut two-parter from Amazing Spider-Man #229 and 230 and The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man from Amazing Spider-Man #248! This week, Matt Goldberg (formerly of Turner Classic Movies, currently of the Substack Commentary Track) joins us for the mighty return of... gasp.... John Travolta in a good role? First, we cover Jackie Earle Haley's directorial debut, Criminal Activities, a messy but ultimately interesting Tarantino riff in which a group of down-and-out high school buddies (Michael Pitt, Christopher Abbott, Rob Brown, Dan Stevens) ends up inadvertently in debt to a cheeky, Macbeth-quoting mob boss (Travolta, having a grand old time). They can get out from under his thumb, if they do one big job for him -- kidnap the failson (Edi Gathegi) of his mob rival. Twists, turns, and darkly comic antics ensue, as a deeply-overqualified cast leans into the film's innate goofiness. On the other side of the coin comes Oliver Stone's poorly-aged, deadly serious, self-righteous political biopic Snowden, charting the life of Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, doing his best Elizabeth Holmes impression) as he goes from dull intelligence agent to dull whistleblower. Cage shows up for a few minutes as Snowden's jaded mentor, but otherwise it's two-plus hours of Stone's overwrought self-insistence that what you're watching is The Most Groundbreaking, Earth-Shattering Discovery About Government Surveillance Ever. Episode Notes Travel technology vendor Sabre is the latest major company in the tech industry to shed staff. Sabre announced on Thursday it's cutting around 1,000 jobs, 15 percent of its workforce, writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes. Dawes reports Sabre's move is part of an effort to save $200 million annually and help improve its business operations. Chief Financial Officer Mike Randolfi said most of the job cuts will occur before the end of the second quarter. Sabre reported that it had nearly 7,500 people on staff at the end of 2022. The announcement came during the company's first quarter earnings call. Sabre generated a little more than $740 million in revenue during the first quarter, a roughly 27 percent year-over-year increase. Next, Tripadvisor is making changes to its products, but what will the new Tripadvisor look like? CEO Matt Goldberg explained Tripadvisor's strategy at its first quarter earnings call on Thursday, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal. Goldberg said the Tripadvisor is introducing new content formats to boost monetization and user engagement. He acknowledged the company monetizes only a small portion of its audience. Goldberg added that Tripadvisor may incorporate generative AI — technology that includes the creation of images, audio and video — in its efforts to improve planning tools. However, Schaal notes that Goldberg's remarks about generative AI were mostly aspirational. Tripadvisor generated roughly $370 million in revenue during the first quarter, a 42 percent jump from the same period last year. However, it posted a $73 million net loss. Finally, corporate travel agency Navan believes it's taken a big step to help expand its market share. The company has unveiled an updated version of its AI chatbot Ava that it feels will help corporations save money, writes Reporter Selene Brophy. Brophy reports Ava can help finance teams condense complex spend data as well as provide insights on managing travel budgets. Navan said Ava's new capabilities include analyzing travel spending to recommend ways to save money, such as changing hotel criteria. Brophy adds Ava is able to write and send an executive summary of its results in several languages. Summer movie season is officially here, with big studio tentpoles finally hitting theaters – and many moviegoers finally willing to enter the hallowed ground of their local cineplex. Action franchises and family-friendly adventures do not typically boast Jewish themes, of course, which made us wonder whether there are, in fact, any Jewish blockbusters? What would that even look like? Perhaps a film from the blockbusters arguable inventor, Steven Spielberg? Perhaps starring the Jewish meme-star Jeff Goldblum? Returning to the podcast to help us sort this out is Senior Editor of Collider, and our resident expert on summer movies, Matt Goldberg. For a type of movie that wouldn't seem to have a Jewish connection, there is a lot to discuss.

Matt Goldberg isn't only a fantastic, warm and talented person he is also one of Montreal's most established storytelling producers. Storytelling producers are ESPECIALLY fabulous people! Matt founded the Confabulation storytelling series in Montreal in 2010. Since then, Confabulation has not only put on dozens of shows here but they have their own podcast and shows in both Toronto and Victoria. Whew! For that amount of work dedicated to doing good things in the world, Matt definitely deserves a follow on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.Matt's assumption that In My Life contains a harpsichord is actually a common misconception. The song's bridge is actually a piano solo played by Sir George Martin and then sped up. (The more you know). As always, I'd encourage you to listen to the whole of the song either before or after your listen to the story. And when you've done THAT feel free to listen to this week's playlist which features In My Life and some of its contemporaries both in pop and (more fun for me) soul along with some more modern stuff for good measure. Make sure you follow The Volume Knob on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or at our website volumeknob.net.And if you have a story about the song that saved your life be sure to send it to me at volumeknobpod@gmail.com.

He's the creator and author of Collider‘s “How the MCU Was Made” series and has interviewed Bill Hader about every single episode of Barry. Whether he's talking to Damon Lindelof about Lost and HBO's Watchmen and its relationship to the Tulsa Race Massacre, covering the Sundance or Toronto Film Festivals, or giving you the […] The post Adam Chitwood – Three Films That Got You Through the 2020 Pandemic appeared first on The Cinematropolis.

This is a spoiler-filled episode, so if you haven't finished WandaVision, don't listen yet. We often don't think about the way Jewish culture and values have shaped comic book characters and the superhero stories we tend to see in our summer blockbusters, but they certainly have. This episode seeks to unpack the influence of Stan Lee's Jewish identity on some of our most cherished superhero movies, but also to consider the way Jewish actors like Gal Gadot and Paul Rudd uniquely portray and embody the beloved superhero characters they play. So join hosts Sara and Brad and special guest Matt Goldberg, Senior Editor for Collider, as they absolutely geek out over comic book and superhero movies through a specifically Jewish lens. John and Ron saw it, so you don't have to. "Cats" is being called, "A cinematic disaster of epic proportions." Peter Howell claims to have had to, "resist the urge to remove a shoe to throw at the screen." Matt Goldberg writes, "The film everyone is in is largely the musical of cats singing about what kind of cats they are until you pray for the sweet release of death." Cats is playing nation-wide, if you want to atone for past misdeeds before Santa comes. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
