Insight, humor and a good dose of reality sounds like a great way to approach a conversation about therapy, the secret lives of teenagers  or anything, when you think about it. That's just it, maybe you haven't thought about the benefits of therapy. You should, and maybe a bit of BFF therapy is just what the doctor ordered.    Hey everyone, time for episode two hundred ten of Above Ground Podcast. We attempt to live out the tenants of what  Dr.Jaimee Arnoff Ph.D. offers her clients and kiddos. Dr.Jaimee is a Clinical Psychologist based in Beacon, NY.  No topic is off limits, including trashy young adult novels and tap dancing. We talk therapy and how we can help parents struggling  with talking about mental health to their kiddos.    If someone is having a hard time starting the conversation with their child about mental health, you can help. Start by asking why this is difficult or what barriers they face to just having a conversation? Let them know sometimes it is as easy as saying, I'm here for you if you ever want to talk, and I will listen". Let the parent make the choice about how to act, but guide them along the way by sharing your own tips and this podcast.    We don't always have the answers. It's ok to not know how to proceed.  That vulnerability can be a benefit, not a barrier. At least for your child. For you, your ego may revolt and force you into unmindful tact or energy. You only get one chance to make a first impression on anyone, but especially our children. We do not want to leave them with a sense that speaking to us is not safe. Trust me, you can have hard conversations. You might be surprised at just how much it helps your kiddo and you.  When you can't, call Dr. Jaimee. That's what she is there for.    You can find Dr. Jaimee Arnoff Ph.D down in Dutchess County at BFF Therapy. Located at 33 Henry Street, Beacon, NY 12508. Dr. Jaimee has a very active  BFF Therapy Instagram page and is also part of the team for James's Warrior's. You can find all of Dr. Jaime's appearances at her Linktree.  Until next week get well, be safe, stay Above.

Almost dying usually has the effect of epiphanies and radical life transformations; Alison's didn't. Surviving surgical complications, Alison woke up after 6 days in suspended animation and 3 hospital stays and started rebuilding her life. Her epiphany was she was already living life right, unboxed, and on her own terms. A life free from expectations, limitations, and blindspots. She was definitely not living in the boxes or within the boundaries, others tried to impose on her throughout her life and career. Alison's life has never been ordinary. From her fifth-grade math teacher calling her mom to say the boys didn't like that she raised her hand first in math class, to earning a Master's In Engineering at a time that was rare for women. She swam for an inner-city YMCA and became a Division 1 Scholarship Swimmer. She also solo backpacks, dives with sharks, and paddleboards in the ocean with whales. After a 30-year career in tech working for huge corporations and 7 startups resulting in 6 exits, Alison left to be an executive coach. Her mission is to be the thinking partner she wished she had on her corporate journey to make the road easier for others than it was for herself. She is her clients' fiercest champion and challenger on their journey to reach their big audacious goals. Alison guides her clients to unbox their life and career for greater fulfillment, happiness, and success.  This allows them to take control of their destiny, living life on their own terms and embracing the limitless possibilities existing beyond the boundaries of convention and tradition. Emma Arnoff told me that helping others has always been in her blood. As a young child growing up in New York City, she had strabismus, a condition that caused her to have crossed eyes, requiring her to wear large glasses. Her physical coordination wasn't too good and she never felt as if she fit in with other kids. Emma's antidote to this feeling was to befriend the school bully as she felt he was misunderstood and needed a friend. Or when a new student arrived from a different country, she wanted to help them learn English. Graduating college with a degree in sociology and women's studies, Emma worked for several years with children and families in schools, residential treatment centers, and the foster care system. She then pursued a master's degree in social work. Today, Emma is the owner and director of The Sensory Space in Poughkeepsie, New York. At The Sensory Space, children can use sensory supports while participating in play therapy and psychotherapy in a safe environment. Emma has a team of 11 clinicians who work with children, adults, families, and groups. Supportive services are also offered including occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy.  In addition to working with clients individually, Emma facilitates programs and groups on inclusion, bullying, and social skills. As a parent herself, she understands the skills needed for child-rearing, working with parents individually and in groups on developing the parenting approaches needed for different developmental stages. Emma has also presented workshops at schools and colleges on supporting neurodiversity in schools and organizations.  In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Emma's journey: Emma is a certified children's yoga instructor and loves to incorporate yoga and movement into therapy sessions. She facilitates discussions on sensory integration, emotional regulation, and inclusion.   Learn more and connect with Emma here: https://sensoryspacepk.com/ https://www.facebook.com/Emma-N-Arnoff-LCSW-PC-737967873077267/ http://instagram.com/thesensoryspace https://www.linkedin.com/in/emma-arnoff-58265b10/

When Alison Arnoff was in fifth grade her teacher called home to discuss an issue with her parents. Apparently, Alison was making the boys angry because she was always raising her hand in math class before them. Her mother responded by suggesting that she be placed in the advanced class. The teacher said Alison is already there. Her mother had nothing more to offer. Alison shared with me, “...how grateful I am to have been raised by parents that didn't discourage me from being bright and quick, exploring the things that made me happy.” In high school, her physics and calculus teachers introduced her to the field of engineering. She went to college and grad school earning degrees in computer and electrical engineering. Additionally, Alison was a Division I competitive swimmer during her undergrad years. Alison realized that many of her peers were carrying around very different messages with regard to their capabilities, future prospects, and expectations than she had been raised with. She calls these “inherited beliefs”, in that you let other people's stories become your stories. Her experience as a woman in a highly technical field as engineering made her stand out and presented her with as many opportunities as challenges. As you can imagine, Alison focused on the positive as she always wanted to learn more and was not afraid to dip her toes into new waters. She worked in seven different startups, six of which were successful. After 25 years in industry and startups, Allison stopped having fun because the work felt out of alignment with her values. Instead of focusing on technical sales, she wanted to be of service so she got her coaching certification. She developed a framework for working with clients on their goals while offering room for creative approaches, breakthroughs and growth. Alison helps them positively impact their career by improving their leadership skills and the company's bottom line by raising productivity, engagement, and retention of their teams.  In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Alison's work today:   Alison is a thinking partner with her clients, helping them maximize their strengths while identifying their blind spots and biases.   She explores all facets of their business, culture, and uniqueness to help them formulate a successful strategy for themselves and their companies.     Learn more and connect with Alison here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/alison-arnoff/ https://www.facebook.com/alison.arnoff/ https://twitter.com/Dare2BeCoaching www.dare2becoaching.com

It was this desire to serve that led me to coaching. With my tech background and engineering education, I knew that coaching in the tech industry would be the most natural fit for me. I’d still be working in an environment I found stimulating and I’d be at home with my peeps who would more readily believe that I understood where they were coming from. I also needed interaction with the type of high performers I’d know in both tech and my years as a sports competitor. So the idea of Dare2Be started to coalesce, but it took a tragic wake-up call to get me to seek out the life I was meant to lead. A few years ago, after the loss of my father, I needed to step away from work. I wasn’t doing a good job for the company or myself. Healing included reconnecting with my inner self for a month in the jungles of Belize and Guatemala. When I returned, I was at a crossroads. I realized I was not living my values. I was going through the motions – being successful at a well-paying job. But there was little joy and lots of stress and no personal fulfillment. I needed to make a change. To pay the bills, I built a small consulting practice while I returned to school to finally realize my dream of becoming a coach. In my life, I have experienced what many of my clients are going through -- the need to complete my journey on my own terms, holding true to my values, testing myself to see if I’m up to a new challenge and leaving a positive legacy. Fortunately, I had coaching help. Now my mission is to coach others through the same turning points I experienced. And though we’re all different, many of our basic needs are the same: support, encouragement, validation. We all need to be championed and challenged, to be accountable in creating the best possible version of ourselves. We need to be inspired to Dare2Be." Dare2Be Better. Dare2Be More. Dare2Be Coached. Speaking From Our Hearts
Alison Arnoff - Why It's Important To Live Your Values

Speaking From Our Hearts

Play Episode Listen Later May 25, 2020 16:47

This week, Paul is joined by coach and mentor, Alison Arnoff, who talks about the importance of instilling values, and why it’s important ensure that every decision is life is driven in alignment with them. As Alison discusses, by recognising our personal values, and the factors we truly hold as important, we can better achieve lasting happiness.      KEY TAKEAWAYS Values are the “North Stars”, the foundational points in our lives that define who we are and how we interact with the world around us. Monetary gain, and achieving lofty positions in business, are the general aims of everyone embarking upon a career path. But they may not always necessarily be the core values to which we personally aspire. It’s useful to break down each prospective value to its core elements, in order to better find the drivers that serve us. Making money is a broad term, but can be a signal that one of our values is to provide for those we love. Mastering the game of life is the art of filtering out the advice of others, and deciding on a course of life that is personal and beneficial to you and others.   BEST MOMENTS ‘Without any navigation, you can’t find your way home’ ‘Is there the possibility of an “and” instead of an “or”?’ ‘I’m more concerned by the depth of our values instead of the number of them’ ‘You can make it work if you turn off the voices outside and listen to the truth inside your head and your heart'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Mastering The Game Of Life     ABOUT THE GUEST What Alison enjoyed most throughout her 25 years in the corporate world, was being able to take what I learned and sharing it with others to solve problems; to bring about positive outcomes that helped companies succeed and grow.  It was this desire to serve that led her to coaching.  She craved the interaction with the type of high performers she’d known in both tech and her years as a sports competitor. Dare2Be was formed.   In her life, Alison has experienced what many of her clients are going through -- the need to complete her journey on her own terms, holding true to her values, testing herself to see if she’s up to a new challenge and leaving a positive legacy.  Now her mission is to coach others through the same turning points she experienced, and though we’re all different, many of our basic needs are the same: support, encouragement, validation.  We need to be inspired to Dare2Be.   Contact Alison via… www.dare2becoaching.com   ABOUT THE HOST One thing that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – something he is totally aware of.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned the iconic ‘Think Different’ Apple commercial narrated by Steve Jobs in 1977: “Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do!” Paul has a long and distinguished history of coaching & mentoring – particularly focusing on helping people make the transition from pain to purpose; a journey he has made himself, from the depths of a deep dark existence, to now living a life of happiness and prosperity. Through this Mastering The Game Of Life podcast, and books he has been involved in – including being a best-selling co-author – Paul also helps others to get their own inspirational messages and stories out into the world; as well as offering support to many charitable organisations, in their development & fund-raising.   “Remember – Mastering The Game Of Life Starts, By Embracing Our Hearts!”   CONTACT METHOD Tel: +44 (0) 115 7270101 E-mail: Paul@Paul-Lowe.com Twitter: https://twitter.com/IAMPaulLowe Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IamPaulLowe/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-d-lowe-7a78332a/

On today’s episode, at the top I announce a brief break from the show, and some state of the podcast reflections as the show nears its first anniversary. There may be a surprise episode or two, but no regularly scheduled music until September. Today’s guest is Jane Arnoff Logsdon. I met Jane randomly last year when we were both cast in a play as part of the Marilyn Bianchi Kids Playwriting Festival. As castmates do, we became friends on Facebook, and before long Jane started inviting me to Stand Up to Trump CLE events, but I wasn’t able to make any of them. On July 12th, the family and I attended “Lights for Liberty”, which was in coordination with events across the country, organized by Cleveland Jobs with Justice, Indivisible CLE, the Immigration Working Group of Cleveland, Action Together Lakewood Area, Women’s March Northeast Ohio, Stand Up to Trump CLE, the Cuyahoga County Progressive Caucus, Cuyahoga Democratic Women’s Caucus and the InterReligious TaskForce on Central America. The purpose of the event was to call for an immediate end to immigrant detention and family separation and to defund ICE. To my surprise, the MC for the event was my old castmate Jane! A few days later, I reached out to ask her to be on the show, and I am very excited to share our conversation about activism, organizing, and just how fucked we are under Trump.
