In this episode of Connected Leadership Bytes, Andy Lopata revisits his interview with Michael Roderick, host of the "Access to Anyone" podcast, exploring the dynamics of recommendations and referrals. Michael, who transitioned from a high school teacher to a Broadway producer, shares his insights on how to build a personal brand that encourages people to recommend you. Andy and Michael note that people like to feel useful, not used. It's crucial to focus on the benefit you provide to clients rather than just describing what you do, framing it as solving a problem for them. This makes it easier for others to see how they can recommend you when the opportunity arises. Michael also discusses the nuances of reciprocity, highlighting that individuals have different impulses and timelines for reciprocating. Some feel compelled to immediately reciprocate, while others take time to vet those they recommend. Michael uses his "fast to view, slow to recommend" approach from his Broadway days as an example of considered and thoughtful recommendations. They also explore the importance of trust and consistency, emphasising the need to do what you say you'll do promptly to build confidence in your credibility. Furthermore, they address how word-of-mouth, qualified recommendations, and clear communication impact success. To build a personal brand for referrals, Michael uses the acronym "AIM" - Accessibility, Influence and Memory. You need to have an accessible message, make people look good when they share it, and be memorable. Ultimately, it is better to be focused on the curiosity it creates than the access it gains, as this will mean people will be more likely to recommend you. Key Takeaways: Focus on Usefulness, Not Just Functionality: When describing what you do, highlight the problem you solve for clients, making it easy for others to see who in their network could benefit. Reciprocity is Nuanced: Understand that people have different impulses and timelines for reciprocating. Some are quick to reciprocate, whilst others take a long time. Be aware of these differences. Consistency Builds Trust: Follow through on your commitments promptly to establish credibility and encourage recommendations. AIM for a Referrable Brand: Make your message accessible, so people understand it. Ensure it creates influence which helps the sharer to look good and create memory by using language, emotion, simplicity and structure. Prioritise Curiosity over Access: Craft your message to generate interest and curiosity rather than just focusing on getting in front of people. Stories Enhance Memorability: Use stories and metaphors to make your message more engaging and easier for others to remember and repeat accurately.   Connect with Andy Lopata: Website | Instagram | LinkedIn | X/Twitter | YouTube Connect with Michael Roderick: Website |LinkedIn | The Financial Times Guide to Mentoring Episode 131 Featuring Michael Roderick

On this week on GoalChat, I had a deep and engaging conversation on #Pitching with Dave Bricker (Speakipedia), Paula Rizzo (Listful Living), and Michael Roderick (Small Pond Enterprises). We all think of pitching as a business imperative. Yet, it's a skill relevant to all aspects of your life. The more "you" you are - with a unique and friendly audience-centric message - the more likely you are to reach the people who need to hear from you. The trio shared what is pitching ... and what is not. Dave, Paula, and Michael also talked about how to create a pitch, as well as what it takes to stand out and succeed. In essence, a pitch is about the audience, the value you add, and finding engaging - and unique - ways to get your message out there. Goals - Dave: Stop talking about yourself and start talking about the person you are serving - Paula: Make a list of the questions you are always answering; a pitch is not about what you know, it's what others care about - Michael: Step out of the longest line; those are full of the people who do not think they have a shot and getting access. Instead, find innovative ways to do the outreach; you never know the amazing results waiting for you Final Thoughts - Michael: Everybody's a celebrity to somebody, but celebrity is relative to everybody - Paula: Don't be so hard on yourself. Pitching is hard. Keep going. Success is out there - Dave: Enjoy the journey. Stop worrying about where you are not. If you put one foot in front of the other and head in the right direction, the top of the mountain has no choice but to come to you Learn About Dave Bricker: Speakipedia.com Paula Rizzo: PaulaRizzo.com/lists Michael Roderick: SmallPondEnterprises.com Debra Eckerling: TheDEBMethod.com/blog Learn more about your ad choices. Have you ever found yourself at a networking event awkwardly waiting for a break in the conversation to deliver that perfectly polished elevator pitch? Or maybe you've had a one-on-one meeting where you only received polite nods and “interesting” as feedback? On today's episode, we discuss the art of creating genuine connections and becoming a person others can't stop talking about – in a good way! The fact is, most of us understand networking and referrals to be integral to business success, but not everyone recognizes that the right way to go about them can make a world of difference. The fine line between a forgettable interaction and one that leaves a memorable impression often comes down to the way we share our expertise and engage in conversations. That's what makes today's talk especially important; it's about transitioning from formulaic pitches to fostering conversations that organically generate interest and lead to referrals. So how do you become truly referable without resorting to aggressive tactics that can turn people off? This is where our guest, Michael Roderick, comes into the picture. Michael Roderick is the CEO of Small Pond Enterprises which helps thoughtful givers become thought leaders by making their brands referable, their messaging memorable, and their ideas unforgettable. Terri Trespicio is a speaker, advisor, and writer who has thoroughly explored this concept throughout her career. Her perspective on thriving in business is different from many but might be what someone needs to find their way.  In this episode of Access to Anyone, Michael Roderick is joined by Terri Trespicio to discuss her novel and her view on navigating the business world. They dissect the idea of passions, why this advice can be misleading, and how to find fulfillment outside of that framework.
