Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to siblings Stan Warnow and Deborah Scott Studebaker whose father was the composer, musician, innovator, band leader and inventor Raymond Scott. While you may not know the name Raymond Scott, you absolutely know his music. That's because while he may not have composed for cartoons, his music is the DNA of most if not all, Looney Toons & Merry Melodies Warner Bros. cartoons. Believe me, you know the song “Powerhouse” & “The Toy Trumpet”.Now if that's all Raymond Scott was known for, that would be a pretty great legacy. But he also composed for big bands, recorded jingles for the likes of Proctor & Gamble and Hamm's Beer, was the orchestra leader on the radio and television show “Your Hit Parade”,  invented the Clavinex & Electronium (precursors to the modern synthesizer) and much more. He was a man more comfortable with “the work”, than the fame or celebrity that came along with it. He was happier in his workroom than he was on camera. So exacting was his vision that he often alienated musicians and singers with his demanding ways. Yet his genius was hard to overlook as none other than Barry Gordy of Motown hired him in 1971 after seeing the Electronium in action to become the Director of Motown's electronic music and research department in Los Angeles. The man had ten careers or perhaps only two, as Deb explains. We also talk about to Deb about her mother, entertainer Dorothy Collins who was a nightclub performer, starred on Broadway in Steven Sondheim's Follies and on television on Candid Camera & Hollywood Palace among others. It's a wild ride discussing the very earliest electronic music, the music that defined all of our youth, and a man so driven by his passion, he essentially invented the fax machine decades before it became a reality. Enjoy, the latest episode of Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

What's up, Potato Heads? Back in the simpler times of 2021, before a mob of violent white supremacists took over the capitol, we had so much to say about cultural appropriation that we made two episodes out of it. In pt. 1, we Ketchup by talking about Bridgerton and then intro our appropriation discussion by dissecting whatever the fuck Hillary Baldwin was thinking when she tried to pull one over on the world and tell us all she's a Spanish immigrant. Next week we get into everyday cultural appropriation and how we can all keep working on appreciating and admiring rather than columbusing* other cultures.  *Acting like shit belongs to you simply because you're white Our Off the Couch Potatoes segment will be part of next week's episode, but in the meantime, be sure to recognize and thank Stacey Abrams, Deborah Scott, Felicia Davis, Keisha Lance Bottoms, and all the other Black women who turned Georgia blue by giving suppressed citizens the chance to vote.

In just a few days, members of the 117th Congress will be sworn into office. While their first days in office will likely include talks about another COVID-19 aid package, one of their first tasks will be tallying the electoral college votes. This task would normally happen with little fanfare, but President Trump’s unfounded claims of voting irregularities and fraud have injected uncertainty into the typically peaceful transfer of power.  Today, a look back at the recent conversations between Amy Walter and freshman members of Congress about the expectations they have going into their first terms. Plus, Nick Fandos of the New York Times describes President-elect Joe Biden’s chances for a more functional legislative process in 2021.  Then, Georgia's competitive political landscape is emphasized by the fact that the state will soon hold two runoff elections that will determine which party controls the Senate. To secure the majority, Democrats will need to win both seats. Gradual demographic change, particularly in metro areas like Savannah and Atlanta, have pushed this former Republican stronghold into the swing-state territory. At the same time, grassroots organizations, many of them led by Black women, have spent years organizing and registering voters - especially Black voters.  Andra Gillespie, an associate professor of political science at Emory University, and Deborah Scott, executive director of Georgia Stand-Up, describe the state’s changing electorate and the future of state-wide races.

This episode's conversation is a “Letter to Future Voters” from Mr. Well-Travelled and Conner Cayson. In this “letter,” we reflect on how it felt to live through Election Day and Election Week 2020, as well as on how the country reacted to the results with protests and celebrations. We examine the slow ballot counting process and feelings of anxiousness as we watched results trickle in from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia and Arizona. Next, we dive deeper into Georgia and how the state was able to flip from Red to Blue. We honor the Black women organizers (Nse Ufot, Helen Butler, Deborah Scott, and Tamieka Atkins) who worked alongside Stacey Abrams to register voters and increase turnout in the state. In the second half of the show, we discuss the demographic breakdown of election results and explore what the White Racial Identity vote says about America in 2020 and beyond. ______________________ Here are the links from today's conversation: Stacey Abrams and Other Georgia Organizers Are Part of a Long—But Often Overlooked—Tradition of Black Women Working for the Vote https://www.google.com/amp/s/time.com/5909556/stacey-abrams-history-black-women-voting/%3famp=true Stacey Didn't Do It Alone https://www.instagram.com/p/CHTAW9ZFWSW/?igshid=13fm7h0opqmt5 https://www.instagram.com/p/CHQKaYehlMT/?igshid=1d8u7c0drzqt7 November 4, 2020 Instagram post by @dopequeenpheebs https://www.instagram.com/p/CHMBcFwB5gP/?igshid=ra6jf746s8km 1A - How Whiteness Affected the Election https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/1a/id1188724250?i=10004978
