In what sounds like history's most congested podcast episode, our sneezing host Hawk delivers the latest on Florida's Senate race, where former Medicare-fraud champion turned Senator Rick Scott is facing off against Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. Apparently, Rick Scott spent $160 million of his own money to win three elections by razor-thin margins, which Hawk suggests might be a sign of mental illness - hey, at least he's creating jobs in the campaign advertising industry!Between sneezes and allergy attacks, Hawk explains how Scott - a man who literally banned the phrase "climate change" from government documents in a state that's basically one hurricane away from becoming Atlantis - is now trailing in polls against Mucarsel-Powell. The highlight of her campaign? A 75-stop bus tour across Florida - one stop for each time Rick Scott pleaded the Fifth Amendment when questioned about that teeny-tiny Medicare fraud situation. Talk about creative campaign messaging! Finally, Hawk manages to explain through his histamine crisis why Trump won't be able to steal the 2024 election, largely because he's no longer in charge of, well, anything. The episode wraps up with a tale of "Peggy Chud" and "Tom Chud" (not their real names, but close enough) in Arizona, who found out the hard way that refusing to certify election results because your candidate lost is, surprisingly, illegal. Who knew? Hawk certainly did.Visit Debbie's campaign website and be sure to donate!!! Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is accused of running a voter intimidation campaign. Travis County officials claim Paxton used his office to suppress voters, launching an intimidation campaign to discourage voter registration. The county, home to Austin, alleges Paxton and Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson forced the state to sue the county for sending voter registration forms to likely-eligible voters who are not registered, breaking federal voting law. Travis County Judge Andy Brown and other officials say Paxton's actions are meant to pressure local government officials to stop efforts required by federal law to register voters. The county started a voter registration outreach program in July to reach likely-eligible unregistered voters no matter their political leanings. Officials insist the voter registration drive was part of their duty to encourage voter engagement. Paxton's office says they had no right to encourage voter registration by sending out forms. The county is asking the court to rule that the voter registration drive was legal and Paxton's actions were a violation of federal law. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hawk sits down with Texas Trey, a reformed Republican who traded his MAGA hat for a Biden button faster than you can say "covfefe." Trey spills the beans on his journey from religious conservative to lefty liberal, proving that miracles do happen - even in the heart of Texas. Along the way, we learn that growing up in small-town Texas is basically like living in a country song, minus the pickup truck and dog (maybe). Our dynamic duo dives deep into the psyche of Trump supporters, citing their make up of everything from evangelical Christians to that one guy at the party who won't shut up about CrossFit. They ponder why billionaires can't just be happy counting their money on a beach somewhere, instead of trying to control elections and launch themselves into space. Spoiler alert: it's probably because their gold-plated toilets are just too darn comfortable. As the conversation wraps up, Hawk and Trey reminisce about the good old days when politics was boring and the biggest controversy was whether New Coke was actually better than the original. All while realizing that things were better simply because they are both white men. Check your privilege when talking about when things were "easier" because for many things were in fact worse. They conclude that while they may not be able to change the minds of hardcore MAGA fans, they can at least laugh about it - and remind everyone to check their voter registration more often than they check their Instagram likes. Because nothing says "democracy" like obsessively refreshing a government website to see if the Republicans have voided your voter registration simply because you don't vote for them, right?Texas Trey Socials:YouTube: @TheTexasTreyTikTok: tiktok.com/@texastreyX: x.com/thetexastreyAtlantic Article: The Cruelty is the Pointhttps://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/the-cruelty-is-the-point/572104/ SUPPORT & CONNECT WITH HAWK- Support on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mdg650hawk- Support Hawk's Merch Store: https://hawkmerchstore.com- Connect on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@mdg650hawk7thacct- Connect on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@hawkpodcasts ALL HAWK PODCASTS INFO- Additional Podcasts Available Here: https://www.hawkpodcasts.com- Listen to Hawk Droppings On Your Favorite Platform:Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3RWeJfyApple Podcasts: https://apple.co/422GDuLYouTube: https://youtube.com/@hawkpodcastsiHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/47vVBdPPandora: https://bit.ly/48COaTBSimplecast: https://hawk-droppings.simplecast.com- Hawk Droppings RSS Feed: https://feeds.simplecast.com/pPVtxSNJ

Mike explains why a judge ruled against some voter intimidation provisions.
As Michael Cohen testified against Trump in Manhattan, Biden notched a win by setting the parameters for two presidential debates. Senator Claire McCaskill and former White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri break down this week's primary results and why healthcare should stay front and center in the 2024 campaign. Then, Deborah Scott of Georgia STAND-UP shares what her organization is doing to energize voting coalitions in her state, as new waves of voter suppression tacticskeep crashing ashore. Lastly, Claire and Jen highlight the unsexy, but sorely needed infrastructure projects that the Biden administration is building to make our water cleaner, our roads safer and to bring US manufacturing into the 21st century.Further reading:Here is the map the White House released, showing the more than 56,000 infrastructure projects and awards that are identified or now underway. Here are the state by state fact sheets to see how money is being spent in your state. Go look for what's happening in your neck of the woods!Further Watching:Deborah Scott, along with other grassroots community leaders are featured in the MSNBC Films documentary: Battleground Georgia. The film breaks down the complex history of voting across the South and how Georgia came to lead the charge in this pivotal political moment. You can watch Battleground Georgia this Sunday, May 19 at 9pm Eastern on MSNBC.
Six months out from the election, and a few issues are converging. Senator Claire McCaskill and former White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri drill down on what's working and what President Biden needs to focus on around a few key issues like immigration, the war in Gaza and reproductive rights. And after Senator Tim Scott tied himself in knots to avoid saying he'd accept the 2024 election results, it's a good time to check in with elections lawyer Marc Elias about coming legal shenanigans. Claire and Marc highlight lawsuits brought by the RNC that aim to sow doubt in election integrity ahead of the fall, and how to stand up to right wing vigilantism at the ballot box.
Hawk discusses two major threats to American democracy leading up to the 2024 election. First, he highlights an article detailing the Republican Party's coordinated efforts to restrict voting access and intimidate voters, especially in minority communities. This includes recruiting over 100,000 partisan "poll watchers," challenging voter signatures on mail-in ballots, and seeking to overturn laws prohibiting voter intimidation. Hawk draws parallels to past voter suppression tactics used by Republicans. The second major topic is a concerning interview Donald Trump gave to Time Magazine, where he outlined his agenda for a potential second term as president. This includes detaining and deporting over 11 million undocumented immigrants, allowing states to monitor and prosecute women over abortion, withholding funds from states that don't follow his policies, pardoning all January 6th insurrectionists, leaving NATO, and staffing his administration with loyalists who believe the 2020 election was stolen.Hawk expresses alarm over Trump's openly autocratic ambitions and the organized efforts by right-wing groups to implement his vision from "day one" if elected, including pre-drafting executive orders and training over 50,000 new bureaucrats. He urges listeners to read the full interview, remain informed, and be prepared to have difficult conversations to persuade potential Trump voters given the grave threats to American democracy that a second Trump term would pose. Many questions remain about the recent attack on North Carolina's electrical grid, which left tens of thousands of citizens unsettled, frightened and without power or heat for days. Officials say it was a “malicious” and “intentional” attack, but who is responsible for this destruction of vital infrastructure, and what was their motive? In a growing climate of fear and political intimidation, many residents in North Carolina — the most militarized state in the union, where law enforcement officials are active in paramilitary groups such as the Oathkeepers and a white sheriff was recently re-elected despite making racist remarks about Black employees — are deeply concerned and had begun organizing a multi-racial coalition to respond. One example is a series of revelatory “Courageous Conversations.” In this episode, Laura joins one such conversation, featuring Curtis Hill, the head of the Columbus County NAACP and leader of the recall of Jody Greene; Keith Rivers, his counterpart in Pasquotank County; Serena Sebring, the Executive Director of Blueprint NC, the largest coalition of grassroots groups in the state; and writer and organizer Mab Segrest, one of the country's leading right-wing researchers who is also a consultant with Blueprint. How can community safety be ensured in this moment? It will take courage from us all.“This is a full assault on everybody's rights in America. I believe that we have the power as individuals to transform our communities, one person at a time, having real courageous conversations, empowering each other, understanding and being a leaning voice.” - Curtis Hill“That percentage of people that are extremists, we can put them in a box and let people know that they are not the ones running this country. We're not going anywhere.” - Keith Rivers“The questions of sheriff accountability, or responsiveness to the needs of community, which include COVID-19, disaster relief, safety — I know that Black people have to have a seat at that table and be able to express the needs of our communities.” - Serena Sebring“I want the conversation about white courage, and what I learned is white courage is really Black and Brown courage . . . I would invite people into these conversations to take risks, because you would get your life.” - Mab SegrestGuests:Curtis Hill, President, NAACP Columbus County, NCKeith Rivers: President, NAACP Pasquotank County, NC; Director, Sunshine StationSerena Sebring: Executive Director, Blueprint NCMab Segrest: Writer, Organizer & Consultant Blueprint NC Help us kick off this holiday season with your good vibrations! Hey Identifier, https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/28/politics/arizona-voter-intimidation-drop-box-lawsuit/index.html #voter #KariLake #trump A federal judge rejected a request by a retirees' association that he issue a temporary restraining order targeted at conduct outside of Arizona drop box locations that some voters have described as intimidating. US District Judge Michael T. Liburdi said in an opinion Friday that the association, the Arizona Alliance for Retired Americans, had “not provided the Court with any evidence that Defendants' conduct constitutes a true threat.” The retirees' association had sued Clean Elections USA and its founder Melody Jennings, who publicly called for individuals to gather at ballot drop box locations and surveil voters. The association is accusing her and the group of coordinating a campaign of voter intimidation. The decision denying the temporary restraining order and a preliminary injunction will be appealed, according to a notice by the plaintiffs to the docket soon after the decision came down. Hillary and Tina cover US House Representative John G. Schmitz and the election fraud cooping tactic. Hillary's Story US House Representative out of California, John G. Vice President Kamala Harris's husband, Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, is reportedly rallying Democrats around her for a 2024 presidential run should President Joe Biden bow out. A judge ruled against extending voting hours Tuesday in Maricopa County, Arizona, after officials held an emergency hearing following 60 different voting centers experiencing ballot printing issues, according to local media. A bomb threat reported at a Louisiana polling location has led to a change of venue and increased security, according to the secretary of state. As millions of voters head out to cast their ballots on Election Day, the NAACP announced a program allowing people who have concerns about voter intimidation at polling places to file reports, as some incidents have already been reported ahead of the midterm elections. Tom calls into the program to give his insight on last night midterm election.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In the run-up to the November election, we're doing a number of episodes that may help you track and process the current news. This week, it's Mid-Terms week, looking at a few of our favorite mid-term elections that planted historical seeds for this year's contest. Today, we look at an incident in 1981, where GOP-backed forces intimidated Black and Latino voters on Election Day as part of a ‘ballot security task force.” Some of the same tactics are popping up around the country in this year's mid-term, and have throughout US history. Officials are worrying about voter intimidation ahead of the midterm elections, and NBC News reports states are bracing for conspiracy-fueled threats as poll workers face heightened harassment. And a look into the real economy as it remains a top issue driving voters to the polls this midterm election. Plus, civil rights leaders met with Elon Musk on Tuesday to share their concerns about the platform after his takeover. Carol Lee, Barbara McQuade, Jessica Huseman, Juanita Tolliver, Matthew Dowd, and Rashad Robinson join.
Voter intimidation; the GOP advantage; judges on the ballot
Regardless of whether someone agrees with the policy positions of the Republican Party (of which, frankly, it's difficult to ascertain), you have to ask yourself, in this election, when you cast your vote, if you can support a Party that poses such a threat to your country. And, I mean this, today's Republican Party is an existential threat to the United States and its people. This is a party that advocates overthrowing the government, that openly states that America is not a democracy and actively takes measures to strip democratic governance from our society, and targets traditionally underreppresented groups for, not just derision, but violence – queer folks, folks of color, women, immigrants. The polls are all over the place, but a few things suggest that Republicans may be in good shape to take Congress. First, history tells us that the president's party loses seats in the first midterm after taking office. Additionally, the economy is lagging – with high gas prices, high inflation, slowing home sales. While this is all related to external factors outside the direct control of president (and here I'm talking about Putin's war in Ukraine driving up the prices of food, oil, and gas; remnants of the botched response to the pandemic that is still dragging on the economy), people still hold the party in power accountable. So, this suggests that Republicans should do well. But, this is muddied by a few things this year – one, Republicans have chosen a uniquely awful – unqualified, Mega MAGA, conspiracy-driven slate of candidates up, down, and across tickets nationwide; two, the overturning of Roe v. Wade animated people against Republicans and their anti-choice agenda in a way that a court opinion hasn't done in recent memory; and three, polls have been really poor at gauging voter intent when anything related to Donald Trump is involved. So, first I make a closing argument, not just for for Democrats, but for democracy and the United States, and also against political violence that is becoming a hallmark of the Republican Party. And, I'm also talking to Natalie Kenoyer – president of the College Democrats of Washington about what she's hearing from the people she's engaging – college Democrats AND folks she's working to convince to turn out for Democrats. And we talk about what issues seem to matter to voters on the ground, the threat that Republicans pose to the country, how she and her friends think about going to red states after Roe was overturned, what a Republican win this year might mean for the future of the country and, especially, her generation, how young Democrats feel about an aging Democratic leadership, and how people can register and vote in Washington state. We'll tell you how the man accused of attacking Paul Pelosi pleaded in state court yesterday, along with new details about the incident. Exit polls suggest Israel's former right-wing leader might have done enough to claim a comeback. North Korea has launched more missile tests, and they're getting closer to South Korea. A right-wing group in Arizona has to keep its distance from voters near ballot boxes, after it was accused of intimidation. Prosecutors say David DePape, the man who allegedly attacked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband, claimed he was on a suicide mission, with plans to kidnap Speaker Pelosi. DePape entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday and is due back in court on Friday. "Voter integrity" groups claim they're looking to root out fraud. But the targeted door-knocking in Shasta County amounts to voter intimidation and could be illegal under California election laws, according to election officials. It's also part of a broader national trend motivated by election conspiracy theorists. Reporter: Erik Neumann, Jefferson Public Radio William Curry, who reportedly graduated from high school in Alabama last year, was finally escorted off campus last week. Despite multiple removals from campus since December 2021, Curry continued to return. Campus officials caught Curry on Thursday morning after he allegedly stole a TV from a dorm basement.
Arizona voters will play an outsized role in determining the nation's political direction in next week's midterm election. The national focus on Arizona inevitably revives interest in the baseless election denialism that has defined many Republican candidates across the country and in this state. After last year's state Senate Republicans ordered a partisan review of ballots in Maricopa County, and after nearly two full years of former President Donald Trump falsely claiming widespread fraud in Arizona, the state's election officials will face a big test. This week on The Gaggle, a podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, host Ron Hansen is joined by Arizona Republic reporters Sasha Hupka and Mary Jo Pitzl. They talk us through how voting is shaping up as of now and what complications are already evident. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On Friday, federal authorities issued an internal bulletin that warned of the potential for violence from domestic extremists during the midterm election season. The same day, a federal Judge in Phoenix refused to stop a group from patrolling outdoor ballot boxes. Members of the group have been showing up heavily armed, often masked and wearing tactical vests. Critics say this is intimidating voters. The judge said that barring the group would violate their constitutional rights. From election deniers who continue to insist without evidence that the 2020 election was stolen, to a flood of recent state laws that make voting more difficult, for many Americans, voting feels much more fraught. But volunteers are stepping up across the country to make sure that all voters feel safe casting their ballot.Host Michel Martin talks to the Reverend Barbara Williams-Skinner of Faiths United to Save Democracy and TurnOut Sunday and Emily Eby, Senior Election Protection Attorney at Texas Civil Rights Project.

Carter and Keri are joined by special guests Daniel Wagner and Libby Emmons. After pondering the lost art of couch flipping, they discuss Jerry Nadler's flawed concept of "court unpacking" before contemplating why the left is choosing this moment to stage their most outrageous power grab yet. Libby highlights the racist Utah Jazz scholarship program and the ubiquity of overt racism in the arts before delving into how schools are ruining children. The conversation veers from recycling to CNN to "fact-checks" before Carter introduces the idea of psychological debt accumulated by refusing to think.
