PENDENTE: Rubrica su Cinema, letteratura, fumetto ed esperienze culturali

Benvenuti in America. “Only love can make it rain The way the beach is kissed by the sea Only love can make it rain Like the sweat of lovers laying in the fields Love reign o'er me Love reign o'er me Rain on me, rain on me” Vi ricordate quel giorno? Dov'eravate?

We're here with the latest co-op episode and oh boy is this a great one. Roxy Polk, Alec Robbins, and Cody Ziglar all join Conner to talk about one of the more revered games of all time, Shadow of the Colossus. Don't you worry, we absolutely make time to discuss the Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle vehicle "Reign Over Me". This episode's crew of wanderers discuss different subjects such as how this game teaches you so much by telling you so little, how this game actually makes the player feel bad for toppling the Colossi, and of course bask in the glory of a few favorite Colossi that stand tall (hehe) above the rest. It's an absolute banger and we hope you enjoy! Absolutely check out this wonderful video from Jacob Geller as well. The Plotaholics Podcast: Movie Reviews

This week we begin our 'Comedic Actors in Serious Roles' block of films. Trust us, this is a much better block than this sad excuse for a title gives! This week, we're taking a look at (in our humble expert opinions) Adam Sander's best film. Period. 2007's Reign Over Me shows Adam Sandler as Charlie Fineman, a man suffering the traumatic loss of his family during the 9/11 Attacks. He's seen by his old college roommate Alan (Don Cheadle) and the two rekindle their friendship as Alan attempts to aid Charlie in healing from his devastating loss. With an outstanding supporting cast that includes Liv Tyler, Robert Klien, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Donald Sutherland, this is a film that shows healthy male relationships in dealing with loss. So kick back, relax and enjoy this episode of the Plotaholics Podcast.Support the show

It all started in London. More than fifty years ago, a generation of teens created something that would change the face of music forever.London, Reign Over Me immerses us in the backroom clubs, basement record shops, and late-night faint radio signals of 1960s Britain, where young hopefuls like Peter Frampton, Dave Davies, and Mick Jagger built off American blues and jazz to form a whole new sound. Author Stephen Tow weaves together original interviews with over ninety musicians and movers-and-shakers of the time to uncover the uniquely British story of classic rock's birth.Capturing the stark contrast of bursting artistic energy with the blitzkrieg landscape leftover from World War II, London, Reign Over Me reveals why classic rock ‘n' roll could only have been born in London. A new sound from a new generation, this music helped spark the most important cultural transformation of the twentieth century.Tow features interviews with a long list of artists including:•Jon Anderson, Rick Wakement & Steve Howe of (Yes)•Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull)•Rod Argent (The Zombies)•Dave Davies (The Kinks)•Spencer Davis (Spencer Davis Group)•Peter Frampton (Humble Pie, solo artist)•Roger Glover (Deep Purple)•Kenney Jones (The Small Faces; The Who)•Greg Lake (King Crimson; Emerson, Lake & Palmer)•Manfred Mann (Manfred Mann)•Dave Mason (Traffic)•John Mayall (The Bluesbreakers)•Ian McLagan of (The Small Faces)•Carl Palmer (Atomic Rooster; Emerson, Lake & Palmer)•Paul Rodgers (Free & Bad Company)Among many, many more...Stephen Tow teaches history at Delaware Valley University, specializing in rock n roll and twentieth-century America. Also, we talk about how maybe they shouldn't base a lot of shots on a British movie from 1979 that very few New Yorkers would understand. This week our Rolfe Kent interviews are capped off with a retrospective of his work. While we cannot possibly cover everything he has composed, we hope that shining a light on some of his varied scores will help show just how impressive his works are in film. Some know Mr. Kent by his romantic comedies, others know him by his darker comedies, and others still know him by his adventure scores. Scores like Downsizing, Rock Dog, Dom Hemingway, Bad Words, Labor Day, Young Adult, Charlie St. Cloud, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, Reign Over Me, Thank You for Smoking, Wedding Crashers, The Matador, Kate and Leopold, Gun Shy, Election, The Slums of Beverly Hills, Citizen Ruth, and so many others. Without his deft touch, such dark comedies like About Schmidt, Sideways, Bad Words, and Election might be too dark or too light, but not balanced. Luckily, Mr. Kents talent is in diversity of the orchestra and the moods he creates. Brad, Kurt, and Alex take a look at some of the reasons he is so good at this, and try to highlight some of his best work. Sit back and relax, or drive to the calming, fun sounds of Mr. Rolfe Kent. A special thanks goes out to Mr. Kent and everyone that works for him for allowing us to provide these shows and excellent interviews. This is the reason we do this show, to preserve the history of such great artists. Enjoy.

This week we give the listener a second view into the mind of Rolfe Kent, composer of films like Sideways, Wedding Crashers, Up In the Air, About Schmidt, Theory of Flight, Gun Shy, Thank You for Smoking, Reign Over Me, and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. Mr. Kent has made himself and integral team member of directors like Alexander Payne, Jason Bateman, and Jason Reitman since 1989, making his resume one of the most robust in the film scoring world. His work shows a range of musical style that helps give the final step in dark comedies that are much more complex than they seem. At the same time, he is able to fluidly move between traditional rock, jazz, and American classical, orchestral arrangements to include all manner of instrumentation from all over the world. Even with all of these techniques, his film scores are always a fantastic listen. He is a chameleon that perfectly adapts to the films needs and gives depth to funny, yet complicated characters. If you have not taken the time to hear some of Rolfe Kents work outside of his films, you owe it to yourself to do so. Take some time to hear what drives him in his work, and why he loves what he does so much. It certainly shows in the end result. Happy 4th of July everyone and that's definitely when I uploaded this. This week the boys are joined by Jonathan to talk about America's favorite thing to remember, 9/11. We watched "Reign Over Me"

Face2Face with David Peck

Rolfe Kent and Face2Face host David Peck talk about Alexander Payne’s new film Downsizing, creating chemistry though music, experimentation, writing by walking and relentless enthusiasm. Biography Unexpected texture, sounds and a signature musical personality are the hallmarks of British film composer Rolfe Kent, who has scored more than 50 films, including Academy Award nominated Up in the Air (for which he won a Golden Satellite award), Sideways (for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award in 2007), Labor Day, Bad Words (Jason Bateman’s directorial debut), Dom Hemingway, About Schmidt, Election, Mean Girls, Legally Blonde and Legally Blonde II, Wedding Crashers, The Matador, Reign Over Me, The Hunting Party, and Thank You for Smoking. Kent also composed the Emmy-nominated main title theme for the Showtime hit, Dexter.  In 2012, he received the Richard Kirk award for career achievement. Born in England into a non-musical family, Kent intuitively felt at age 12 that he wanted to be a film composer, although his early musical training was brief and not so formal.  Citing Jarre’s Lawrence of Arabia and Morricone’s The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,  as inspirations, Kent took the advice of an early music teacher to avoid rigid  course work that would dampen his enthusiasm.  He followed an entirely different path and, taking counterpoint to what is often cited as culture mired in cynicism, profited from his early course work in theology to relate it to music.  After enrolling in psychology sutdies at Unviersity of Leeds in Yorkshire, Kent’s musical career was casually begun at a dance club when the director of a play offered him a chance to “do” the music.  His jump start was his composition for a stage musical Gross at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, a springboard for Authors, composers and performers. In the confines of his musically busy studio, one can immediately see why his musical personality is as distinct and his own.  Constantly on the go, adventurous and curious, Kent has developed a style that is not only distinct, but indicative of his aversion to the-anticipated-score in tone, texture and rhythm.  The walls are lined with many familiar and many more unfamiliar instruments, gingerly handled and gleefully demonstrated for their sonic qualities.  Among his collection are the Indonesian percussion instrument the angklung, the shawm (first used in military maneuvers as a psychological weapon), the melodica, used for the light, soothing effect in Kent’s jazz-infused score for his Golden Globe-nominated Sideways, and an instrument he discovered and cannot name that sounds like the world’s beaches at their most romantic high tide... combined. Kent has the distinction of attracting and sustaining relationships with directors as popular and diverse as Alexander Payne, Mark Waters, Jason Reitman, Burr Steers, and Richard Shepard. Synopsis “Alexander [Payne, writer/director] asked for the score to be beautiful classical music,” Kent described.  The composer wanted to avoid movie-score clichés and took a different route.  “I figured a Kubrickian approach was best, where the music sounds like it existed outside of the film, and was discovered to match the scene perfectly.”   Known for using unexpected textures, sounds and his own signature musical personality this opened the floodgates for Rolfe.  “As ever, Alexander was open to hearing unexpected sounds, so when I threw him the curve of an opera aria sung in Norwegian, or some bagpipes.  He loved it.” In addition to writing the original score for the film, he also co-wrote the original song “A Little Change In The Weather,” performed by The Swingles. Movie Menu Rants about Netflix Rant: With Adam Sandler making a deal with Netflix, will this change cinema as we know it? Hosted by: Alexander Z, Dan "The Man" Muñoz, and Christopher Velasco. Notes: Many things have been said about Adam Sandler But being a rebel has never been one of them He’s an actor who always plays it safe taking roles that he knows will only appeal to his base Movies like Jack And Jill (...) or Blended Both scoring less than 15% on Rotten tomatoes BUT scoring huge overseas number (i.e. sales) CLIP Ever so often, he’s been known to take risks such as being in Reign Over Me, playing a 9/11 PTSD victim living in NYC Or, one of my all time favorites: PUNCH DRUNK LOVE CLIP So is Adam Sandler a REBEL? Hmmm A boring commodity? ABSOLUTELY A waste of talent? OH YEAH A risk taker? SURE BUT A REBEL? What do you guys consider Sandler? OPEN DIALOGUE As of TWO WEEKS AGO, Sandler has found himself on a short blacklist that I suspect will be growing bigger with time to come EVER SINCE SANDLER made a deal with the ULTIMATE DEVILS of Hollywood: HARVEY WEINSTEIN and… NETFLIX Which is where my rant leads to… The Wolf of the World Wide Web.... NETFLIX BUT, before we start there you need to know three facts that will explain why Sandler is at the center of the controversy FACT 1: Movie studios DO NOT own or operate Movie Theaters 1948: United States v. Paramount Pictures known as the Hollywood Antitrust Case changed Hollywood by removing the monopolistic control that Studios had over Cinemas. Basically, the US government told Hollywood to go fuck itself and STOP touching Cinemas in their no-no place. FACT 2: THEATER OWNERS ARE AFRAID OF PIRACY Since the 1970s: Theater owners attempted to blockade the release of popular technology, such as VHS, DVD, BLURAY, and now… the Internet. FACT 3: INTERNET NEARLY KILLED THE THEATER Sales are down and Theater owners are scared of ILLEGAL STREAMING SITES, TORRENTING, AND NETFLIX. You name it, they’re scared of everything because… Sales are down for movie attendance 2014 WORST YEAR ON RECORD So I’d like to ask you guys, why do you think sales are down? OPEN DIALOGUE There are many theories revolving the loss of revenue, I believe theater owners are assholes and jacking up prices to make up for their lost in revenue. Which is what’s leading to the drop of attendance. Which is the equivalent of: An endless circlejerk that only ends with a dislocated member You’re not gonna attend a fancy theater that ends up costing you $50 for a date night. Don’t believe me? Go to a /quote/ ghetto /unquote/ theater and buy a ticket from there: Tickets drop from $18 to $6 Which is where NETFLIX has making a killing!!! The company was established in 1997 in California renovating the DVD subscription model AND upgrading to digital streaming IN 2009 (...) Which was basically copy and pasting from online piracy sites The only difference between online piracy sites was the speed in which you could watch a film on Netflix… and, of course, the legality of it. So why is Adam Sandler important in all this? Adam Sandler is the top grossing theater celebrity in the US and overseas Hard to believe, I know! But he grosses more money by just showing his stupid pineapple shaped head than most comedians. And he knows this! Makes movies for vacations He’s also #1 on Forbes most overpaid actors Because theaters know that Pineapple head makes money and the studios want it! So the fact that on October 2nd, Ted Sarandos, leader of content creation at Netflix teamed up with Harvey Weinstein THEEE BIGGEST FILM PRODUCER IN HOLLYWOOD to make FOUR Adam Sandler movies… YOU GODDAMN RIGHT THAT MOVIE STUDIOS AND MOVIE THEATERS RECOGNIZED THIS AS A HUUUUUUGE MOVE BECAUSE, Netflix has also promised SAME DAY RELEASES in theaters and streaming. Movie theaters are scared of losing more money and are being forced to work with Netflix because they do not want to cross Weinstein So what could film studios and theater owners do to punish Adam Sandler? WELL, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Warner Bros. has shit canned his next movie, The Ridiculous Six yesterday. Holding all rights and kicking Sandler out of the lot! The Price is Wrong BITCH! So what do you guys think? Is Netflix under attack with this WB/Sandler move? You think Netflix stole fire from the Movie Gods? Do you think Netflix will be the ultimate winner in this battle? //**END … But we’ll have to wait and see… I’m… And that’ll do it for us here at Movie Menu Rants… Rate the rant! It's Part 3 of our Summer of Sandler series! Unfortunately, this episode is marred with technical difficulties. About 8 minutes into the episode, there's a chopping sound that persists throughout the episode. We apologize and hope it's not too distracting. On the bright side, we were joined by Mike's brother Kevin for this episode! It was a delight to have him in the studio with us and look forward to bringing him back at some point in the future. In the opening scene of “Reign Over Me,” we hear the strains of Graham Nash's “Simple Man,” and see a spectral figure, head encased in huge headphones, buzzing through the streets of nighttime Manhattan on a scooter that looks like a motorized skateboard. The scooterist's name is Charlie Fineman, he's played by Adam Sandler, and he's anything but simple. Like many of Sandler's characters, Charlie boils with rage beneath a placid exterior. The difference here is the source of his distress – his wife and children were on one of the planes that hit the World Trade Center on 9/11, and losing them has turned Charlie, once a successful dentist, into a sort of Rain Man, shut off from the world.
