NUKE ATTACK ON SOLARTOPIA; UNCOMMITTED; RESHAPING THE ELECTORAL COLLEGE We start GREEP zoom #175 with the great LINDA SEELEY from the Mothers for Peace of San Luis Obispo explaining the latest hearing on shutting the Diablo Canyon nukes. Linda explains that the extreme heat, pressure and radiation inside a nuclear reactor have embrittled Reactor Pressure Vessels, robbing nukes everywhere of their braking systems…rendering them all vulnerable to the next apocalyptic explosion. As Linda says, we have far more battery storage in California than Diablo produces….so who needs nukes? Answer: NOBODY!! MIKE THALLER of Progressive Democrats of America tells his personal horror show of what the San Diego utility has done to his electric bill (hint: it's not pretty). Ohio's CONNIE KLINE tells us about the gargantuan pro-nuke bribery fire still melting the Buckeye State. Green power pioneer RON LEONARD gets us to the solar nitty-gritty. MAYA VAN ROSSUM tells us how Green Amendments can help shut the nuke industry. STEVEN SONDHEIM offers his wisdom on saving the planet. VINA COLLEY of southern Ohio warns us against the dangers of reviving the Piketon enrichment facility, which has “killed so many people in the community.” VINNIE DE STEFANO gives us an update JULIAN ASSANGE just as Joe Biden has extolled freedom of the press at the National Correspondents Dinner. The abortion issue is dissected by WENDI LEDERMAN, including an on-the-ground report of “baby killer” accusations all over. MIKE HERSH explains the “Uncommitted” movement to get Biden's attention on war and democracy. LYNN FEINERMAN demands that the political mainstream pay more attention to the young and the marginalized. RUTH STRAUSS and MYLA RESON bring reason and balance to the discussion of a nation in upheaval. From Ann Arbor, we hear from BRIAN STERNBERG on Michigan's confused but vital debate over what happens to electoral delegates. We conclude with the debate over reshaping the Electoral College and its devastating impact on real democracy.

Our exit today has us trying to win a trip to Hollywood to become an extra in a film with positive moral values. This week's film is Superstar, based on Molly Shannon's Saturday Night Live character, Mary Katherine Gallagher. While the two hosts might start the episode with very different opinions on the movie, one of them actually manages to change the others mind a bit! Plus, some very odd findings in the IMDB keywords, lots of Todd Solondz talk, more Will Ferrell, a history of SNL movies, and creepy armpit smelling. And of course, Tripp manages to somehow bring Steven Sondheim into the conversation. Powered by Riverside.fm Theme Music by Jonworthymusic
VOTING RIGHTS & BRIBERY IN OHIO; HOW GOOGLE MANIPULATES PUBLIC OPINION; NUKE POWER ON THE ATTACK We start with the great ANDREA MILLER and RAY MCCLENDON, who open GREEP #159 with their usual genius insights on voting rights, gerrymandering and more, primarily in the BIPOC south. STEVE CARUSO joins to fill us in on the corrupt insanity of Ohio. Buckeye officials from the Governor, Lieutenant-Governor, Public Utilities Commission Chair and others are all implicated in the infamous $61 million bribe for “persuading” the Legislature for a $1billion nuclear power bribe. The former House Speaker, Larry Householder, has already begun a 20-year prison term. CAMILLA REES then introduces DR. ROBERT EPSTEIN and his pioneer work in tracking the undue influence of Google and other internet giants in swaying public opinion. Dr. Epstein's riveting, groundbreaking presentation The presumption is that the influence is meant to be “pro-liberal,” but co-convener MIKE HERSH argues that the real agenda is pro-corporate, far to the right of the American mainstream. Major media legend DAVID SALTMAN challenges the idea that such manipulation can tangibly shape voting behavior, ERIC LAZARUS, JUSTIN LEBLANC, MARY STONEWALL-BUTLER, JULIE WIENER, WENDI LEDERMAN and others chime in on the anti-democracy wave drowning our nation in outright autocracy. We're then joined by the legendary clean energy pioneer KARL GROSSMAN, who reports on the corporate call for the world to triple its insane commitments to atomic energy. At the latest global climate conference, a convening sheik amazingly asserts that the burning of fossil fuels has no impact on global climate. STEVEN SONDHEIM, RON LEONARD and others chime in on the nuclear attack on our planet. NINA BEETY raises the possibility that a breeder reactor may have been built by PG&E at Moss Landing, California. MYLA RESON, newly elected member of the National Board of the Pacifica Radio Network, reminds us that the California Solartopia show she co-hosts with me (Harvey Wasserman) has returned to to KPFK 90.7fm in Los Angeles at 5pm PT Wednesday evenings. That show can be heard at KPFK.org. We will see & hear you again on December 11. Until then…..NO NUKES….Shut Diablo

Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to siblings Stan Warnow and Deborah Scott Studebaker whose father was the composer, musician, innovator, band leader and inventor Raymond Scott. While you may not know the name Raymond Scott, you absolutely know his music. That's because while he may not have composed for cartoons, his music is the DNA of most if not all, Looney Toons & Merry Melodies Warner Bros. cartoons. Believe me, you know the song “Powerhouse” & “The Toy Trumpet”.Now if that's all Raymond Scott was known for, that would be a pretty great legacy. But he also composed for big bands, recorded jingles for the likes of Proctor & Gamble and Hamm's Beer, was the orchestra leader on the radio and television show “Your Hit Parade”, invented the Clavinex & Electronium (precursors to the modern synthesizer) and much more. He was a man more comfortable with “the work”, than the fame or celebrity that came along with it. He was happier in his workroom than he was on camera. So exacting was his vision that he often alienated musicians and singers with his demanding ways. Yet his genius was hard to overlook as none other than Barry Gordy of Motown hired him in 1971 after seeing the Electronium in action to become the Director of Motown's electronic music and research department in Los Angeles. The man had ten careers or perhaps only two, as Deb explains. We also talk about to Deb about her mother, entertainer Dorothy Collins who was a nightclub performer, starred on Broadway in Steven Sondheim's Follies and on television on Candid Camera & Hollywood Palace among others. It's a wild ride discussing the very earliest electronic music, the music that defined all of our youth, and a man so driven by his passion, he essentially invented the fax machine decades before it became a reality. Enjoy, the latest episode of Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

Ep 294 | Aired 4/29/2022 Today on Up In Your Business with Kerry McCoy I had the pleasure of talking (and guffawing!) with Mr. Jacob Keith Watson, a Broadway performer who is back in his home state of Arkansas to star in the Repertory Theatre's production of Into the Woods by Steven Sondheim. Ticket information can be found at TheRep.org. Jacob, playing the kindhearted Baker, will sing his way into your heart during the performance. In preparation for this interview, I read Jacob's resume and it was fun. An actor's resume is so unlike that of a traditional job application. At the top of the page, it lists his height, weight, eye color, hair color, and voice range. In no way could I ask any of those questions to a prospective hire at Flag and Banner! In case you're wondering: Mr. Jacob Keith Watson is 5'9, 200 lbs., has blond hair, blue eyes, and is a "Baritenor" (sings a high C). At my last count, Jacob has acted in 15 shows across the stages of Broadway, National Tours, and Regional Theatre. To name a few (and some you will easily recognize): Carousel, Hello Dolly, Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago. Hear Jacob Keith Watson talk about why he loves theatre, how the pandemic affected his career in NYC, and share some advice for young actors looking to get into the business of acting.

On this week's episode, Mari & Jeff FINALLY discuss the long-awaited DUNE and T-Chal is all his glory! But first, they rave about Sister Act & Jeff's feel-good watches, determine if they know enough about the Beatles, honor Steven Sondheim, discuss the insanity of the new film Wolf, and Mari makes a BOLD statement declaring her favorite movie of the year: listen to find out what it is! Then, Mari and Jeff discuss the criminally beautiful cinematography, production design, visual effects, score, and costuming is on Dune - and how everything else is just good. And of course Mari says a few obscene things about T*mothee Ch*lamet.

Josh is joined by recurring guest John Pulice to talk about Netflix's "tick, tick...BOOM!" They discuss how first-time director Lin Manuel-Miranda did in adapting Jonathan Larson's unconventional rock monologue to the screen, Andrew Garfield's lead performance as Larson, how effective the movie was in telling a story about creative people being torn between financial security and chasing their dreams and much more! (Full disclosure, we recorded prior to Steven Sondheim's passing on November 26, 2021. He was a legend and will be greatly missed. Had we recorded in the days that followed, we would have discussed him even more. But we touched on his role in the story and Bradley Whitford's portrayal of him.)
We staan stil bij dood van Steven Sondheim en natuurlijke het jaarlijkse Thanksgiving "feest." Met Jochem van Dijk en Gerald van Wilgen. Gek dat die gesprekken altijd eindigen op de meest onverwachte plekken.
Nothing screams Holiday Season like a big summer blockbuster about blowing up some aliens. We wanted to look at a movie from one of the biggest stars of our generation Will Smith, and Independence Day isn't a bad place to start considering it's the movie that really elevated him to Star Status. How does this hit of the 90's hold up when compared to modern day blockbusters? We figure that out. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema It's once again time for Catching Up On Cinema's 3rd annual, “Kyle's Killer October” event month! This week Kyle and Trevor continue their foray into the world of horror musicals with a review of Tim Burton's, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)! Adapted from Steven Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's stage musical, which in turn was inspired by Penny Dreadfuls from the late1800's, the film is a gleefully violent and twisted Gothic affair that feels well suited to the director's stylistic tendencies. Starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, and featuring Alan Rickmand and Sacha Baron Cohen in supporting roles, the film is an audio visual delight, with lovingly detailed sets and costumes doing wonders to complement the film's bombastic score an dynamic musical numbers. Originally conceived as a project for director Sam Mendes, and heavily condensed from it's original stage iteration, the film utilizes the unique benefits of the cinematic medium, leveraging skillful editing and cinematography to offer a more intimate and focused version of the narrative that is wholly satisfying. Highly recommended for fans of macabre tales and Tim Burton's aesthetics. Welcome to the final episode of this series of The Making Of... from The Female Lead. Our guest this week is the comedian, actor, writer and national treasure Mel Giedroyc! This was our first ever conversation with Mel, but it feels like talking to an old friend because she is so relaxed and funny and loves a chat. She is also packed full of wisdom - just as a national treasure should be. Best known as part of the Mel and Sue double act, she started out doing live sketch comedy, then moved into acting and presenting, culminating in seven years hosting the phenomenal Great British Bake Off. Famous for their unique style of gentle but irreverent humour, Mel and Sue set the tone for what has become one of Britain's best-loved shows. As well as presenting, acting and everything else, Mel has also written two books on motherhood and now her first novel The Best Things, which is out in the new year. Mel shared a great list of moments that have made her, ranging from her first “road to Damascus moment” in the theatre and up to losing her house in her 40s. We also talked about the loneliness of being a new mum, female friendship and how she managed seven years of eating loads of cake. The interview was recorded over zoom, at the height of lockdown, so please bear with us as some bits may sound a little wobbly. Although this is the last episode, we will be back soon with a new series of brilliant women in the new year. * Mel Giedroyc grew up in Leatherhead as the youngest of four children, she went to Cambridge University where she met Sue Perkins and they formed a double act which was shortlisted for the Best Newcomers Award at the Edinburgh Festival. They built a long-standing professional relationship including hosting Light Lunch and then Late Lunch on Channel Four. Mel & Sue are best known these days for presenting The Great British Bake Off. In September 2016, Love Productions switched the contract to televise The Great British Bake Off from the BBC to Channel Four. Both Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc stepped down as hosts of the show after seven years. In her career, Mel has worked on numerous TV shows and radio shows, as well as on stage - most recently in Steven Sondheim's Company in the West End and Much Ado About Nothing at the Rose Theatre. Mel has always loved writing and has published two books about motherhood From Here to Maternity: One Mother of a Journey and Going Ga-Ga: Is there life after birth? In 2021 her first novel The Best Things will be released. * The Making Of is hosted by Bea Appleby and is edited by Lauren Lind. The production is brought to you by The Female Lead And the whole series is very kindly sponsored by Missoma

In random learnings, Patti has gotten pretty good at hosting Zoom meetings and John has gotten into the music of Steven Sondheim. (Check out his 90th birthday tribute on YouTube!) The theme for this week was to just reminisce on what Patti and John miss bit also what they DON’T miss. Certain activities such as hitting punching bags and and hugs with friends they’re looking forward to getting back to. But they do not miss the commute to work or setting foot in a grocery store. The Microstory for the week was the first stop on their whirlwind Europe trip in Barcelona where they stayed in apartments in El Born... and the many flights of stairs to get into them.

TVC 478.4: Ed welcomes Golden Globe Award-winning actor and director Richard Benjamin (The Sunshine Boys, The Last of Sheila, He and She, Quark, Catch-22, Goodbye, Columbus, Diary of a Mad Housewife, Westworld, Portnoy’s Complaint). Topics include Richard’s many collaborations with the likes of Buck Henry, Neil Simon, and Carl Reiner, and how Anthony Perkins and Steven Sondheim infused the screenplay of The Last of Sheila with their personal love of games. Richard Benjamin and Dyan Cannon appeared at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, January 26 following a special screening of The Last of Sheila (1973), the clever murder mystery also starring James Mason, James Coburn, and Raquel Welch that has also been cited as the inspiration for the contemporary whodunit Knives Out. Quotes from the show:“I am a clothes horse by nature and so I have a shoezeum at home and it's almost exclusively in Doc Martens [shoes].” – Steve Swayne“There are different ways of being you rather than the ones, maybe, that you have chosen or that society has chosen for you.” – Steve Swayne“It's very interesting to think about how people perceive others … from how we look and how we dress and you're actually turning [that perception] on its head to share a lesson.” – Syd Finkelstein “As humans, all of us can do what any other human in all of the human race has done, is doing, or has a dream of doing. We are all capable of doing all of it.” – Steve SwayneOn studying east coast Jewish composers: “I learned a lot of things that I never would have thought to know.” – Steve SwayneOn the appropriateness of telling a story of a community you are not part of: “I have a view of that community that I can only have because I'm not in it and things that might be transparent to other people, I begin to question.” – Steve Swayne“We are not what we present necessarily; because I'm black doesn't mean I can only do things marked as black … we contain multitudes, all of us.” – Steve Swayne“I feel like we are in an era now where with this idea of having the nerve, the audacity to speak for some other group that you are not part of is really looked down upon.” – Syd Finkelstein “I want to be about the business of increasing the circle of we and decreasing the circle of they.” – Steve SwayneOn elitism in general culture: “There's a thing about whatever is considered popular by the masses that somehow gets denigrated … we seem to have all these rules in place for what's acceptable, for what's good culturally and we don't know who wrote those rules.” – Syd FinkelsteinOn Steven Sondheim's style of composing: “The way he conveys the life of a character through his choice of notes is very much the way certain opera composers do that type of work.” – Steve SwayneStay Connected: Syd FinkelsteinWebsite: http://thesydcast.comLinkedIn: Sydney FinkelsteinTwitter: @sydfinkelsteinFacebook: The SydcastInstagram: The Sydcast Steve SwainInstagram: @dr._kiltmartensWebsite: Dartmouth College - The Montgomery Fellows ProgramSubscribe to our podcast + download each episode on Stitcher, iTunes, and Spotify. Ritsch Directs and Choreographs the Tony Award-winning Steven Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler musical, which is set in the impoverished lanes of Victorian London.Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street continues at the Rep Stage through Sunday September 23rd.

Interview with Renowned Singer/Songwriter/Artist, Judy Collins Welcome to the Not Old Better Show. Today, I talk to the incomparable, Judy Collins. Judy Collins is appearing live at the Tally Ho Theater, in Leesburg Virginia, Friday night May 13. Other upcoming tour dates are available on her web site, judycollins.com We all know Judy from the Crosby Stills & Nash hit, “Suite Judy Blue Eyes,” and she is certainly a favorite of our audience, and someone who's beautiful soprano voice transcends most music styles, genres and the test of time, making her “not old, but truly better.” One of the leading singers of the 1960s and 1970s, Judy Collins was born on May 1 (my birthday, too). She grew up in Denver, Colorado, where she began studying classical piano at the age of 5. In her teens, Collins turned to folk music. She scored her first commercial hit in 1967 with the iconic Joni Mitchell song, "Both Sides Now.” Which is playing now. In our interview today, among the many subjects Judy talks about is her early recording career with Elektra Records, what she learned and how it influenced the rest of her work. Unlike Joan Baez, who she was frequently compared, she used her classical music training to evolve into being a singer of art songs and show tunes, sometimes employing semi-classical arrangements. After her public debut at age 13 as a classical pianist, July Collins continued to make her mark. She's recorded more than 40 albums, using her lifelong love of the guitar and a broad range of material—from folk and pop to standards and her own compositions. Known for her clear, crisp soprano voice. Both Pete Seeger and Woodie Guthrie are influences, and Judy recorded one of her very first hits, a song by Pete Seeger, Turn, Turn, Turn, which you'll hear. Judy Collins is famous for her versions of songs by Joni Mitchell, Randy Newman, Blood Sweat & Tears, and Judy's version of the moving “Send in The Clowns,” by Steven Sondheim, from the musical, A Little Night Music, is among my favorite songs of all time. The song earned her a Grammy nomination and Sondheim took home the award for Song of the Year. Her recording of the song hit the charts twice, first in 1975 and then in 1977. She's also written two memoirs, a children's book and a novel and is an accomplished painter, actress, filmmaker and record label head. In 1969, Collins made her stage debut appearing in a New York City revival of Peer Gynt (pear gint) with Stacy Keach and Olympia Dukakis. She later made other appearances on television, including guest spots on The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. Working behind the camera, Collins produced and co-directed the 1974 documentary Antonia: A Portrait of the Woman about her former piano teacher. The film received an Academy Award nomination. Collins is a longtime social activist for causes that include UNICEF, suicide prevention, and artist's rights. Judy Collins has been a champion for equal rights for women and civil rights. During the 1960s and 1970s, Collins appeared at numerous protests calling for the end of the Vietnam War. She also helped African Americans register to vote in the South. After four decades, she still records and tours. Now in her seventies, Collins continues to pursue her creative passions, including as a published author. She established her own label, Wildflower Records, in 2000 to release her own music and to support the work of the other artists. Through Wildflower, Collins put out 2010's Paradise, which features appearances by Stephen Stills and Joan Baez. Collins maintains a heavy tour schedule, playing more than 80 dates per year. She is also popular on the lecture circuit, giving talks about mental health issues and suicide prevention. Her latest project is a unique duets album titled Strangers Again, on Judy Collins' own Wildflower label, available on Amazon. Please join me and special guest, Judy Collins.
