SHITE! We messed up again. Turns out the film we were supposed to watch SPEAKEASY was part of some HBO contest/documentary series and not really a movie. We tried to give it a shot at 13 min in....we just couldn't take it anymore. So we roll again and we got ORDINARY DECENT CRIMINAL from 2000. And what a fun romp through Irish organized crime this was. Check out this indie crime comedy flick. On our inaugural episode we introduce the podcast, explain our rational for only covering the 21st century, and then break into a freewheeling discussion about the 2000 crime comedy Ordinary Decent Criminal. Trust us, nobody is less excited that we're starting things off with a Kevin Spacey vehicle but that's just how it worked out. Connor places this film in the lineage of Irish TV movies of the 1980s and the broader Irish New Wave. Cole says a bunch of cancelable things because he's dumb that he ends up cutting out of the episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Hunter is a badass drummer. He plays full time in Decent Criminal, is the mastermind behind Human Issue, contributes to countless other bands, and is the former drummer of the Dwarves. We talk about how they are part of the new wave of punk music, what artists influenced their sound, and even some cool tour stories. Get stuck in and check out this interview for a chance to hear directly from the source more about how the band is grateful for what they have, but, hey, wouldn't mind rising to the fame level of a band like Blink-182 as well. New stuff from The Dirty Nil, Decent Criminal, the Melvins, and so much more!
This week, Tristan & Hunter Martinez of the band Decent Criminal are our guests. They recently announced a new EP, which is set to come out in early March of this year via Sell The Heart Records (US) and Gunner Records (EU). The EP is a testament to the band's willingness to evolve their sound and incorporate new approaches to songwriting. That being said, it still retains many of the same qualities that fans have come to love about the band. Decent Criminal got together a little over 10 years ago, and have seen a steady growth in their fanbase along the way. With a a few lineup changes over the years, the band now consists of brothers Hunter and Tristan on drums & guitar/vocals respectively, along with Brian Gellman on guitar/vocals, and Jesse Hernandez on bass/vocals. 2020 was going to be a HUGE year for the band, with appearances at Punk Rock Bowling & Pouzza Fest, along with tours with the likes of Dead Bars, Ariel Salad, and more. They managed to weather the year away from touring by continuing to write new music and it's likely that we'll see another full length from them before too long, but this new EP will be a great dose of new tuneage from them in the meantime. During this episode we talk a bit about the new EP and some of the tactics they've been using over the years with their songwriting. We learn about how COVID-19 has directly impacted them, and we of course go over some of their favorite bands to look out for and their Top 5 Desert Island albums. This week, recording engineer and producer Scott Goodrich joins us. Scott has been an in-house engineer at Bay Area's Nu-Tone studios as well as recording out of his home studio for quite awhile now, and has amassed a very impressive resume of clients. Artists like Broadway Calls, Direct Hit!. Decent Criminal, Unconditional Arms, The Story So Far, among others have benefited from Scott's skills and knowledge. During this episode, we spent some time discussing the benefits of using a recording studio vs a home recording set up, and whether or not traditional studios may be necessary for most artists. We dive into a discussion of quality over quantity, and he provides some advice for any artists looking to record. He shares with me a few of his favorite artists that you may not have heard of, as well as his top 5 desert island albums. You can find out more info about Scott here: https://www.scottkgoodrich.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. Today we’re talking with special guest Jason Brennan (from Shite Talk: An Irish History Podcast) about Martin Cahill or the general, as dubbed by the media. From the early 1970s until his death in 1994, Cahill rose from house burglaries and hot dog vendor extortion up to major robbery including both a multimillion dollar gold and jewelry heist; and the art theft of some of the World’s most valuable paintings. After his assassination (While returning a VHS copy of Delta Force 3), there were many films and documentaries about his life and murder even though he was secretive with his notorious practice of hiding his face. Thanks for listening. Please subscribe and rate our podcast. It helps us out a lot.
