Inclusion Unlocked: The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Podcast
Efforts to level the playing field for diverse talent are in the spotlight. This week is all about the Donkey Guard! This position has recently gained popularity in the current BJJ landscape, but it has actually been around for many years. One thing I absolutely hate in Jiu Jitsu is when my opponent knows more than me, especially in a position or a system that I have completely failed to address! Therefore, it was absolutely critical that I learned the power of this underappreciated position. The Donkey Guard is simple to use and very effective. You can use it to sweep and submit your opponent under many rule sets. It is also an asymmetrical position in that you have the ability to attack your opponent and they do not have the ability to attack you. Furthermore, I was shocked at how seamlessly the Donkey Guard fit into my pre-existing game. I hope in a short amount of time, you can smash your training partners and opponents with the reverse cow girl… I mean, reverse closed (donkey) guard.Further Study/Resources:-Reverse Cowgirl… I Mean Closed Guard by Owen Jones-The Donkey Guard by Jeff Glover-Matt Kwan vs Daniel Sathler 2023 IBJJF Portland Open (Heelhook from Donkey Guard): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJQ0iENvDFIMatt Kwan vs Daniel Sathler IBJJF Portland Open 2023Black Belt Adult Middleweight Divisionwww.youtube.com-Donkey Guard Escape!! Long defined by small technicians like Xavi, Iniesta and Modric, Spanish football is seeing the emergence of a new generation of elite midfielders who bring a more physical presence. In this episode of the Real Deal, we analyze how the arrivals of Eduardo Camavinga at Real Madrid and Jude Bellingham's emergence at Borussia Dortmund, along with Barca's Gavi, signal a transition to a more athletic, box-to-box style of midfielder. Camavinga brings a rangy, powerful skillset from midfield, while Gavi plays with tenacity and aggressiveness belying his small stature. Bellingham adds goal threat and is an elite box-to-box presence. Their early success shows this blend of technical security, intelligence and athleticism is set to dominate for years to come, and change our view of ‘controlling' dominant midfielders set by Kroos, Modric, Xavi and Iniesta in the past. After getting out to a perfect 4-0 start, the Baltimore Ravens were feeling pretty good about the experiment that was the 2006 season. That multiple unstable compounds such as a talented but unsatisfied roster, a head coach teetering on the hot seat, and an accomplished but ailing veteran quarterback could gel like that to start the year was a great feeling. But when they hit a bump in the road heading into their bye week, Brian Billick began to feel that drastic change was needed. That change combined with the remarkable consistency of a roster that was buoyed by a new guard of young talent was what kept them on track, and aiming for a shot to go back to the Super Bowl. Steve McNair had his eyes on the Super Bowl, but he also had them on a game circled on his calendar since before the start of the season - November, 12th, 2006, in what would be his first (and last time) in Adelphia Coliseum as anything other than a Titan. Needless to say, it would be a defining moment of the season for both him, and his teammates that wanted it so badly for him. The upside is they can take chances; they don't have to bet on a sure thing... The flip side... is that most investors would rather increase the chance of you being a billion-dollar company a little bit, even if it massively increases the chance of you going bankrupt." – Kathryn Minshew This episode is sponsored by Medjet. There's no doubt that agriculture, worldwide, is facing some type of impending crisis. Between climate change, aging farmer populations, more comfortable jobs for young people, and other economic concerns, farms are shutting down and leaving the rest of us in a precarious situation. In Israel, Michael Eisenberg, Partner at Aleph VC, who has long valued a connection to the physical land, joined the organization over a known as "Hashomer Hahadash", The New Guard, over a decade ago to promote agriculture as an industry by reaching young and innovative farmers who wish to inject a fresh, new energy into the agricultural industry. With a recent initiative, he hopes to redefine agriculture in the mind of young people and keep Israel and international partners on the right path to adapt to the changes in agriculture that we are already seeing. This is the final episode in our series. In Act 1, Shapeshifters, we look at the generations of women who had no pro league to play in: what's it like to be a 22-year-old who has to completely start over? They go on to become rocket scientists, CEOs, and big-time music supervisors. In Act 2, Side-Hustlers, we look at the early generations who did have a pro league to play in, but had to scrap and hustle at side jobs to make it work. In Act 3, we finish with today's generation – the New Guard – when the field of opportunity is wide open.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's guest is someone very respected in the industry but who hasn't spent much time in the limelight – until recently that is. Ariel Re's CEO Ryan Mather now represents part of the significant new capital that has come into the sector since the global market turn accelerated in the last couple of years. Ariel Re is a specialist looking to be an expert and add value wherever it decides to deploy its capital. It is also highly diverse with divisions insuring clean energy, cyber and professional lines as well as operating in the more traditional property cat arena. What seems to set it apart is a willingness to move towards risks that others are running away from. This obviously takes an open mind and the confidence to invest in the sort of expertise that will give the firm the comfort to issue terms where others won't. That all points to a business and a leadership team that is very much out of the ordinary. I think this podcast will give you a good idea of how Ariel Re sets about this difficult task and help you start to get to know someone whose industry profile is likely to rise significantly in coming years. Ryan is clearly very smart but he's far from being dry or academic. He's very amiable and refreshing company and I can highly recommend a listen NOTES One abbreviation that slipped through is SBF, which is Lloyd's shorthand for Syndicate Business Forecast, and an essential part of the market's planning process. On this day 90 years ago, firebrand NSW Premier Jack Lang was sacked by Governor Sir Phillip Game. In this first of two instalments, we look at Lang's early life and business career, the scandalous aspect of his personal life and his embrace of the White Australia policy, his political rise and the massive opposition he faced from his own party, from big business, from the newspapers and from the fascist New Guard. Then, in early May 1932, during the worst of the Great Depression, Lang's collision with the Commonwealth government threatened chaos and civil violence. But it would be one forgotten man who actually brought about Lang's downfall. In part two, The First Dismissal: The Public Servant Who Toppled the Premier, we'll explore the role played in Lang's dismissal by Robert Beardsmore. Usually he's written in and out of the story in a sentence or two, and if there's any elaboration it's to characterise him as a faceless public servant who merely did his duty. But we're taking a deep dive into the background and potential motivations of a man who – between 1900 and 1932 – was like the Forrest Gump of Australian history.Part 2 will be available early next week for Patreon supporters and be on general release on 20 May.
