Barcelona Light Station, photo by Mike and Carol McKinney In 1828, Congress appropriated five thousand dollars to construct a lighthouse in Barcelona Harbor on Lake Erie in New York. The harbor had just been designated an official port of entry when the lighthouse was built. In the early 1800s, lumber, salt, flour, and fish were shipped to and from the port. The lighthouse is a conical stone tower, 40 feet tall. It's believed to be the very first natural gas-powered lighthouse in the world. Barcelona Lighthouse is undergoing a major restoration (New York State Parks) Marla Bingham-Melcher The light was discontinued as an aid to navigation in 1859, and the property was transferred to New York State Parks in 2007. There's a museum in the keeper's house, and currently there's a major project in progress that includes the rehabilitation of the lighthouse tower. Our guest is Marla Bingham-Melcher, the manager of the five state parks in Chautauqua County, including Barcelona Lighthouse. This episode is co-hosted by Averie Shaughnessy-Comfort, executive director of Lake Erie Lights of Pennsylvania.

Chautauqua County is the westernmost county in New York - it stretches from Lake Erie down to the Pennsylvania state line. The largest city is Jamestown, around 70 miles southwest of Buffalo. Apart from Jamestown, the rest of the county is made up of smaller towns and villages, with less than 150,000 people living in the whole county. In the late 90's and early 2000's three women went missing from Chautauqua County; Lori Bova, Yolanda Bindics, and Corrie Anderson. Their disappearances happened in different years, different locations, and the women were all different ages but their cases intertwine. Welcome to G220 Radio! In this episode, we are looking at eschatology, the view of post-millennialism, with our guest Pastor Edwin Ramirez of Faith Bible Chapel. Postmillennialism expects that eventually the vast majority of people living will be saved. Increasing gospel success will gradually produce a time in history prior to Christ's return in which faith, righteousness, peace, and prosperity will prevail in the affairs of men and nations. Edwin is the husband of one wife and father of four children. He holds a B.A. degree in Pastoral Ministry from The Baptist College of Florida in Graceville, FL. Edwin is originally from Long Island, NY, and is currently a resident of Chautauqua County. In addition to his passion for the local church, Edwin enjoys reading, writing, and evangelism. Edwin was also a contributing author to Thaddeus J. Williams' book Confronting Injustice without Compromising Truth.

In this episode, we'll speak about two disappearances and one murder in New York's Chautauqua County. Some online sleuths have wondered whether or not the cases are linked. If you've been following my herbal offerings for even a short time, you know that I'm not about focusing on fear. While some alternative health practitioners rally around toxins and pollutants, I'd rather focus on joy and the things that I do have control over. But unfortunately, environmental contaminants do exist, and we can't simply ignore them away. That's why I'm especially grateful to Sarah Sorci for coming on the show. She has taken it on to research important contamination issues for gardeners and foragers, and then shares that information in a way that's based on empowerment rather than fear. (Love that!)By the end of this episode, here's just a sprinkling of what you'll know:► As a forager, how can you navigate effectively around contamination concerns?► How can you address it if your garden soil has contaminants?► How can you navigate conversations with neighbors about using herbicides or pesticides on their property?► What simple and practical safety tips can you implement today when using your garden hose? (Don't forget to download your handout from Sarah!)Here is one of my favorite takeaways from our conversation: “We should all have access to being able to harvest clean and safe food and medicine, whether from our gardens or from our local communities. And I wanted to create a location where gardeners and foragers could find some answers to these [safety] questions in one easy location.”If you're not already familiar with Sarah, she is an herbal educator, writer, and the founder of Sweet Flag Herbs. She loves supporting folks who seek meaning, empowerment, and environmental sustainability by connecting with plants.Through her writing project, A Nourishing Harvest, Sarah explores environmental contamination issues that affect gardeners and foragers, translating scientific data into practical and approachable free articles. She also creates beautiful educational boxes that facilitate ancestral connection by way of the plant world. Sarah has offered hundreds of classes and plant walks throughout Western New York and beyond.Sarah came to herbalism by way of an Environmental Studies degree, farm work, and offering therapeutic gardening programming. She's a 2014 graduate of the Blue Ridge School of Herbal Medicine's Holistic Herbalism program, and she's taken clinical herbalism classes with the Eclectic School of Herbal Medicine. Sarah is grateful to the unnamed elders, foragers, and tenders who have contributed to our collective herbal knowledge.Sarah lives and gardens with her partner in Chautauqua County, NY, homeland of the Seneca Nation of Indians (sni.org).If you'd like to hear more from Sarah, which I highly recommend, then head to the show notes where you can get easy links for her website and social media. For this first episode in a special two-part Destination on the Left series, I'm joining you from the American Bus Association's Annual Marketplace in Detroit. What stands out in my interviews with the following industry leaders is how positive everyone feels about 2023 and the future of the tour and travel sector. My guests share their golden nuggets about what they are most looking forward to, the changes they see in the market, how collaboration has helped them, and trends on the horizon that they are excited to be part of. In this episode, you'll hear from these extraordinary leaders: Amy DeFrancesco– National Sales Executive at Drury Hotels Ryan Sanders – Vice President of Operations and Sales for the Motorcoach Family of Brands Chelsea Lerud – Executive Director of Iowa Travel Industry Partners Dagny Ashley – Director of Tourism at City of Quincy Gary Hahn – Vice President of Marketing and Communications National Comedy Center Inna Cramer – Sales Director at Rocky Mountaineer Group Travel Insight from American Bus Association's Annual Marketplace The American Bus Association's Annual Marketplace is an exceptional event that brings together motorcoach and tour operators, as well as industry suppliers, providing them with an opportunity to connect and establish new relationships to advance their businesses. Recently, I had the privilege of interviewing some of the distinguished attendees at the Annual Marketplace, where I gained insights into how building partnerships and actively seeking collaborations has transformed their industry in recent years. Join me as we delve deeper into the importance of collaboration in shaping the future of the motorcoach and tour operator industry. Amy DeFrancesco- National Sales Executive at Drury Hotels Amy shares the importance of collaboration in the hospitality industry. She notes the rebound from the pandemic and the return of international travelers as key areas of growth. She also dives into the issues of booking window shrinkage in the industry and discusses its pros and cons, including better market awareness and pressures on the operational team. Amy also shares her pride that Drury Hotels has been awarded the highest guest satisfaction in the upper midscale chain for the 17th consecutive year. The recent opening of their largest hotel on Disney property in December 2022 is a testament to their continued growth. Amy emphasizes that what drew them to their partners is their shared values of high standards and integrity, which makes for great collaborations. Ryan Sanders – Vice President of Operations and Sales for the Motorcoach Family of Brands In the travel industry, attending events and trade shows is crucial for networking and staying up-to-date with industry changes. Ryan shares his experience of attending appointments and events at the ABA conference, where he was impressed with the resilience of the industry organizations, including ABA. Despite the challenges brought on by the pandemic, these organizations have managed to survive and support their members, ensuring that industry professionals can continue to connect and collaborate — which is why his word of the conference is “evolving.” Chelsea Lerud – Executive Director of Iowa Travel Industry Partners Chelsea shares that in terms of group travel, they're seeing some exciting changes in the market. Specifically, in Iowa, they are noticing that travelers are using the state as a stopover on their way to their final destination. While Iowa may not be their ultimate goal, the team at Iowa Travel Industry Partners is excited to capture visitors at a few key locations. A strategy that encourages travelers to take a longer trip and explore more of what Iowa has to offer. She goes on to comment that “It's exciting to see the evolution of group travel, and we're thrilled to be a part of it.” Dagny Ashley – Director of Tourism at City of Quincy Dagny, of Tourism at City of Quincy, is excited for 2023 and getting back to the business of travel. After a tough few years for both the hospitality industry and suppliers, her organization is looking forward to a positive outlook for the year ahead. With last year already showing signs of recovery, Dagny is confident that visitors are eager to hit the road again and start traveling. This sentiment has been echoed by others at the ABA event, with a shared sense of excitement for the year ahead and a feeling of returning to a new normal in the travel industry. Gary Hahn – Vice President of Marketing and Communications National Comedy Center Gary discusses how group travel is evolving and changing — according to Gary, they are seeing a broader demographic of visitors, including young people and students. They are also noticing more individuals from the over-50 crowd, which tends to be the motorcoach crowd that enjoys visiting museums. Gary is excited to see this change, as it presents new opportunities for engagement, especially given the technology present in their museum. Gary shares details of an upcoming collaboration hosting of the Pennsylvania Bus Association's annual conference in Chautauqua County. This is an exciting opportunity for the attraction, as it's their first time bringing in the association for a conference. Inna Cramer – Sales Director at Rocky Mountaineer Inna, Director of Sales for Rocky Mountaineer, shared her insights on the evolving group travel industry in an interview. She mentioned that they are seeing smaller groups of families and friends wanting to travel together, as well as like-minded individuals wanting to connect and enjoy the train experience. When asked to describe ABA Marketplace in one word, Inna went for “connections.” She loves the word because it represents the opportunity to see old friends, establish new connections, and work together with industry partners to make an impact in the travel and tourism industry. A Positive Future After speaking with my industry expert guests, it is clear that the tour and travel sector is looking towards a positive future in 2023. In this episode, we're dealing with some heavy allegations. Jim Sarver claims Warren County District Attorney Rick Hernan, in 2002 and 2003, tried to set him up to take the wrap for Damien's murder, after he was arrested on unrelated charges. Sounds crazy, right? Well, first let's talk to Rick, and then Sarver, and then let's see what happened in an interstate case involving Warren County, Pa., and Chautauqua County, N.Y., in the late 1980s - the murder of Kathy Wilson. Hernan and Det. John Herzog both participated in that case as well. What's the thing we learned a few episodes about lessons? When we don't learn them we're destined to repeat them.... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/letsfinddamien/message

The Erie Canal, which flows between Buffalo and Albany for 363 miles, was completed in 1825 to connect New York City and the Hudson Valley with the Great Lakes. Remnants of the canal, including its toll stations, maintenance buildings, and locks, still exist today, which still yield precious artifacts and, on occasion, some old coins. Isle Royal, an island off the port of Waddington, Lawrence County, situated on the St. Lawrence River County, is where a French commander buried a treasure before surrendering the fort to the British in 1760. The treasure's value is estimated to range between $10,000 to $100,000. Many silver mines in the eighteenth century were once located along Mouat Utsayantha, Schoharie County's region. The Lost Blenheim Silver Mine is found on the northern side of this mountain. The Patriots sealed it off to deter the British from accessing and profiting from it. A landslide occurred soon afterward, concealing it permanently. Silver Creek is situated by Lake Erie, just around eight miles northeast of Dunkirk (County 59). The creek owes its name to the fact that a substantial number of silver coins washed along its beach after intense storms. It is presumed the coins came from the steamer Atlantic, which carried over $60,000 and sunk in the area in 1852. Some wreckage is also visible on Lake Erie's beach, about four miles northeast of Barcelona, County 60, Chautauqua County. If unconfirmed reports are believed, gold and silver coins have been discovered in this same area. The steamer City of Detroit, which was carrying more than $200,000 in gold and silver coins, as well as a substantive cargo of copper ingots, sank here in 1873. Storms and strong currents have washed some of the steamer's remains and cargo ashore. Dean Richard, a steamer ship, sank near Jerusalem Cors' shore on Lake Erie, around ten miles south of Buffalo. A storm destroyed the ship and cast ashore its remains and cargo, which included $191,000 in gold and silver coins, burying them in the beach's sands. Grand Island is located in the middle of the Niagara River between Buffalo and Niagara Falls. It is said to be the site where an affluent French merchant named Clairieux had some kegs containing eighteenth-century coins buried close to his house and store. The site is also home to several ruins of colonial buildings. A cache of gold and silver coins dating from the sixteenth century was found close to a round stone building's ruins in 1888. It is believed that some French raiders buried around fifteen treasure chests in secret locations on this island during the French and Indian wars. On the Lake Erie shore, east of Port Colborne by about half a mile, in County 58 in Ontario, Canada, considerable amounts of American gold coins have been found, including remains of a wrecked steamship. It is presumed that they are of the Anthony Wayne, a steamer that sank here in 1850 and carried more than $100,000 in gold and silver coins. This site can be reached by heading ten miles due west of Buffalo. Wilbur Rogers' farm, about two miles west of Warsaw Village, State 20A, Wyoming County, is where the present owner's father buried gold coins priced at around $43,000 during the Depression. Montezuma Swamp, situated close to Seneca, County 96, Seneca County, is reported as the site where Loomis outlaw gang buried around $40,000. The Sulphur Spring Treasure is reputed to have been buried close to the ruins of Sulphur Health Resort, between the villages of North Pitcher and Pitcher County 26, Chenango County, by a traveling medicine man circa 1900. Several years ago, some gold coins were discovered in this region; however, they are of recent origin. Some silver coins and chinaware fragments were found on a beach after storms four miles south of Oswego on Lake Ontario, Oswego County, close to S.U.N.Y. College's campus. In this week's episode of We Love Outdoors with Rich Davenport, your humble host reviews some of the goings on in wildlife, while also reflecting on the loss of longtime Outdoors Writer and friend, Gene Pauszek. His life was about sharing the outdoors lifestyle and he was a fixture at every Chautauqua County fishing or hunting event ever held. Fishing season is hitting full stride with the opening of NY's Inland Trout season on April 1, and along with the trout opener came new regulations taking effect, including the increased minimum size statewide for crappie from 9" to 10", as well as changes to sunfish regulations, trout ponds and lakes, and season opening dates as well. Steelhead runs are in full swing on the Great Lakes streams, and Spring Turkey season is also right around the corner, opening May 1. Be sure you remember to treat your outerwear with Permethrin, as the ticks are very active, and this time of year brings no shortage of them. Use Picaridin on your skin to help keep the ticks away too, while also keeping some black flies at bay as well. The NYS budget is late year, but suddenly this isn't a big deal, as the delays are a result of Democrat in-fighting, as no GOP elected representative can be blamed. Still, despite no paychecks for correction officers, public meetings are scheduled to provide "educational sessions" concerning climate justice and what a disadvantaged community is, as NYSDEC and NYSERDA celebrate their suddenly too cozy relationship, the adversarial relationship these two are supposed to take. Finally, your humble host deviates from the norm with a final segment touching on youth hunting recruitment and retention, as some believe it is the changing times that are driving lower youth interest in the great outdoors. The real reasons may actually surprise you. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/support

A hiking nightmare. Two sets of human remains were discovered ten yards apart on a hiking trail in Chautauqua County. Is it just a coincidence or something more sinister?

After a nearly 500-day hiatus, due to the biblically cataclysmic global plague, Lewis made his “post”-pandemic performance debut. Was it outdoors? Yes. Was it in front of physically present live humans? Indeed! And while he may have had the comedy equivalent of the "twisties", the audience at the Chautauqua Institute could not have been more gracious or appreciative. All in all, a great way to get back on the road. Originally founded as a Methodist adult camp, the Chautauqua Institute is located in western New York state, and features a wealth of programming where adults speak intelligently to each other. Amazingly, this kind of place still exists in America. Followers of Lewis Black will know that in nearby Jamestown is the National Comedy Center which features a treasure-trove of material about the history and development of comedy in America, including exhibits on Ernie Kovacs, the Smothers Brothers, George Carlin, and Muppet Fozzie Bear. It also hosts the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, which is happening this week (August 3-7)! So, if you're in the greater Chautauqua County area it's an experience you won't want to miss. The NCC is also home to the Lucy-Desi Museum, which honors the contributions to comedy that Lucille Ball made (she grew up in nearby Celoron), and the entire NCC serves a monument to Lucy's legacy and her vision of the place of comedy in American culture. Lewis's performance went well, though preparing for it was one of the hardest things he's ever done, up there with getting ready for his Bar Mitzvah. Preparing for a show and writing his set without an audience is not his normal approach. He had to work in isolation and without his usual facilities and faculties, similar to the pandemic-restricted training regimens of the Olympic athletes now in Tokyo. But like them, once he's on the big stage, the muscle memory comes back and the joy of performing comes through. His set went well and now he's looking forward to hitting the road starting in September. So, assuming the vaccine situation gets a little better, Lewis's fall tour will begin next month with club dates in Huntsville, AL, Cleveland, OH, and Omaha, NE. If that isn't incentive enough to get vaccinated, what more do you need? The rants this week touch on the state of the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, with a decided lack of empathy for the latter. We also have submissions about the difficulties of buying a pillow, the sacrilege that is fruit on pizza, and one about how Canada is not so much better than America. And more. The live rants come from Lewis' performance on Feb. 6, 2020 at the Coral Springs Center for the Performing Arts. A 25-year-old Jamestown mother vanished. Her remains were found by hunters years later. 17 years since her disappearance, new Chautauqua County leadership has given her family new hope.
The summer is flying by, the days are getting shorter, and hunting and fishing is heating up as we approach the seasonal changes that are on the horizon. In this episode of We Love Outdoors, your humble host Rich Davenport brings you some detailed updates concerning DEC works over the past several months, as reported by Region 9 DEC to the Western New York Environmental Federation on July 25, 2021. Deer plan comment period is open for one more week, deer damage complaints are up, but bear problems are down, some fallow deer were found in Chautauqua County, and successfully removed from the landscape. These invasives were examined and found to be healthy, posing no health threats to the wild NY deer herds, this time. However, CWD was detected in a captive deer in Warren, PA, just 5 miles from NY's border. Increased surveillance and testing of roadkill and coordination with Seneca Nation and Allegany State Park personnel has been initiated. Fisheries updates also provided as DEC works to improve access and launch facilities in Chautauqua County. Surveys of Bear Lake crappie and assessments were completed this spring, and musky collection was also successful despite short staffing and a reduced effort due to inclement weather during the collection period. Sauger restoration efforts in the Allegheny River is ongoing, and preparations are being made for the fall electroshock surveys to monitor the sauger program success, as well as monitoring of Chautauqua Lake walleye populations and spawning success. Covid covid covid updates after CDC decided to abandon science and push the fear agenda once again, using the far less dangerous "delta strain" as their fear mongering weapon. It is becoming clear we are not getting the factual truth from these quacks. Remember, folks, vaccines are not 100% effective, only natural immunity is. The breathless reporting of people getting sick that have been vaccinated completely ignores that some who get the experimental vaccine will receive no benefit. Temper what you are hearing in the propaganda news with reality, as right now, the two are not intersecting. On August 4 the VIP Fishing Day returns in Dunkirk, and an economic picture of sport fishing during covid covid covid will be discussed. Your host gives some top line info, but will wait on specifics for next week. The public hearing for lowering the deer hunting age with firearms in Erie County to age 12 is slated for Thursday August 5 at 6:00PM at Old County Hall. NYSERDA holding another dog and pony show concerning the never been done (since 2010) wind feasibility study for Great Lakes wind on August 10, but the worm appears to be turning and renewable energy supporters are eating their own with fights between wind and solar developers and proposed projects. CAWTILE is expanding their efforts with a meeting slated for August 18 in Dunkirk, and National Hunting and Fishing Day is on for this year, September 25, 2021. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/support
In this week's edition of We Love Outdoors with Rich Davenport, your humble host explores the regulatory proposals published in the NYS Register in support of the Deer Management Plan. Comment period on these regulatory proposals ends August 8, 2021. Also discussed are the newly proposed regulatory changes for Fisher and Pine Marten trapping, regulations whose public comment period ends 8/16. Our government is based upon citizen participation, and joining a federation conservation club, attending meetings, getting informed and get involved - write letters, send emails, speak with your elected representatives in support or opposition on issues that impact the wildlife, fisheries and our conservation traditions. Rich Davenport also explores the pending regulations concerning allowable activities on WMAs, F&WMAs, and some MUAs and UAs in NY. Conflicting activities are ongoing on these lands, which is concerning as WMAs and such are to offer wildlife a haven free from human disturbance and harrying when hunting and trapping seasons are closed. This includes reinforcing the leash laws, as dogs cannot be off leash unless engaged in hunting during an open season, or undergoing hunting training in designated areas. You're just walking Fido? ON A LEASH! Your humble host also provides you with updates to the youth hunting law progress, as well as some details from the June 2021 Erie County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs meeting, as the lifting of the covid covid covid rules has brought the lifting of capacity limits, social distancing rules, and the need to pre-register for any event. Short notice to influence the Teach Me To Fish events, but National Hunting and Fishing Day will be full bore this year. Erie County Fair has also announced tickets will no longer be valid on specific days, tickets purchased in advance are good any day of the fair. Alternative energy is once again in the spotlight, as residents of Chautauqua County voice their concerns and opposition to the proposed Ripley to Barcelona industrial solar array project, opposition to expanded wind factory facilities and wind turbines in Lake Erie. Meanwhile, major hypocrisy was exposed in Buffalo Rising in an article concerning outer and inner harbor development and the lawsuit filed against the Erie County Harbor Development Corporation and their general project plans, using some of the identical environmental concerns as are held in opposition to wind turbines in freshwater. Perhaps Sierra Club and the other hypocrites are now seeing the light and stand to protect lake Erie vs. destroy her? We shall see. Finally, if you think NY is goofy, check out Arizona and their recent actions to ban use of trail cameras for scouting for the hunt. Eyes wide open, folks, as these things have a funny way of moving from west to east! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/support

While using his metal detector, in 2013 and 2014, in remote areas of Chautauqua County, NY, tonight's guest had Sasquatch encounters. What used to be a stress-free hobby for him has now become anything but; now that he knows what's living out there, in the woods. We hope you'll tune in, to hear Ryan talk about his encounters.
