In this Throwback Thursday episode of Chris DeMakes A Podcast, originally released on May 1, 2023, Bert McCracken of The Used sits down with Chris to unpack the writing and recording of the band's breakout single, “The Taste of Ink.” McCracken takes listeners back to the early 2000s, when the song—written in a basement in Provo, Utah—captured the restless energy and emotional urgency that would come to define The Used's sound. He shares how a crucial studio session with producer John Feldmann in Los Angeles helped reshape the chorus and elevate the track into a career-launching anthem. With behind-the-scenes stories and a deep dive into the song's lyrics and legacy, this episode offers a powerful glimpse into the making of an emo classic. Although he found early success as a rapper, Travis Mills always liked the idea of being in a band. He grew up admiring blink-182, MxPx, and The Used. Early groups didn't work out for various reasons, and he found solo success with tracks like "Diemonds" and "Young & Stupid." In drummer Nick Gross, Mills found a musical partner with the drive to make their band a success. Together as girlfriends, the duo has embraced the music that shaped their youth. They enlisted producer John Feldmann, the Dr. Dre of pop punk, to complete their sound. Over two albums and an EP, they've created anthems that sound like artifacts of the early 2000s, rather than recreations of TRL rock. Their recent single "shut & kiss me" sounds like it could have been on the Road Trip soundtrack. It's the first new music for the band since the EP Over My Dead Body last May. This summer, girlfriends will join Avril Lavigne on her North American tour. Mills and Gross talk to Jordan Edwards about their experience with girlfriends, touring with Lavigne, and making music at The Noise Nest.

It's got every genre from screamo hardcore punk to chill beach vibes. Listen to it from start to finish in order, to really experience the ride that is UNRAVEL, my first full length LP!” The previously released singles have garnered praise from Entertainment Tonight, Consequence, J-14, Substream Magazine, Sweety High, MTV, Zach Sang Show, and other notable outlets, with idobi Radio claiming “Runnin'” to be a “cheeky, funny, catchy and thoughtful” track that is a “summer-ready hit.”Tyler Posey is no stranger to the limelight. His storied acting and music career spans over a decade starring in dozens of TV shows and movies including Teen Wolf and Truth or Dare, as well as being a member of multiple bands including PVMNTS and Five North. In 2020, Posey decided to take a big step in his music career by becoming a solo artist.Standing alone in the spotlight for the first time has been freeing in more ways than one, least of all when it comes to his courage to open up about the hell that was 2020. The early days of the COVID pandemic were particularly pronounced for him, exacerbating deep-rooted anxiety, depression and childhood trauma that manifested in a self-destructive pattern of drug and alcohol abuse. Left to his own devices while quarantine orders ruled Los Angeles, life inside Posey's home became a dangerous cycle of isolation and intoxication. This new chapter of Posey's career sets off a powder keg of personal reflection and growth, grounded by his elastic voice, juxtaposing a devil-may-care growl and smooth-throated pop-punk sheen.hellofresh.com/backwards50Promo Code: backwards50We want to hear from you! The Matches played catchy pop-punk in the 2000s, a time when catchy pop-punk bands could be top 40 pop stars. They worked their asses off, were courted by major labels, but never reached pop stardom. Though the band did mean a lot to a ton of people. They built community around their music and made sincere connections with their fans. And they have ska roots. The band formed in 1997 as The Locals. Inspired by Rancid, they originally played a blend of punk rock and ska-punk. They also looked up to fellow east bay band Link 80. And in fact, even went to high school with Link 80's original guitarist Matt Bettinelli-Olpin. The Locals even played Link 80s final show! Today we talk to The Matches' lead singer/guitarist Shawn Harris about the bands roots and dig into several stories throughout the band's career. We discuss their years building a scene at East Bay venue iMusicast, where bands like My Chemical Romance, Zebrahead and RX Bandits would play on tour. We also talk about The Matches first major tour--which was with Reel Big Fish. Shawn tells us about two mind-blowing shows from that tour. We also talk about why Gilman would never book the band, what is was like working with some famous producers (Tim Armstrong, John Feldmann), how The Locals ended up touring in Bosnia while they were still in high school, and Shawn talks a bit about his new life as a children's book cartoonist, book author and Dave Eggers collaborator. Shawn even tells us about the time he sneaked a peak into Dave's CD collection to see what kind of music he listened to.  And it was exactly the bands you think it was!  Support the show

We had the pleasure of interviewing MOD SUN over Zoom video!Rock singer, writer & producer MOD SUN releases “Rich Kids Ruin Everything”. This is the first new music from MOD SUN since his highly successful 2021 release of Internet Killed The Rockstar, which has surpassed 100 million streams. MOD SUN and John Feldmann have again teamed up on this new pop-punk anthem, which features nostalgic guitar riffs and some of MOD's boldest lyrics to date. “I grew up a scene kid, I grew up a skateboarder and a pop punk kid and I used to get made fun of for being all of those, for the way I looked, the way I dressed, for the way I acted and all the things love and it's both awesome and hilarious, yet confusing seeing the general public and pop culture embracing all the things that I would get torn down for,” said MOD SUN. “This is a song that I wrote for all the kids that feel confident in their own skin and don't walk around wearing a costume.” “Everything now is about trends,” said MOD SUN. “If it keeps going this way and getting championed then eventually originality will be a lost art. I'm trying to let people know that there's more to this world than what's currently popular. I want kids to feel like it's important to be visionaries not followers."In addition to the new single, MOD SUN co-wrote and co-produced a majority of the tracks on Avril Lavigne's latest album, Love Sux, which debuted at number 2 on the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart. He will also be joining Lavigne on her Bite Me 2022 Canadian Tour in May. MOD SUN recently gave a raw, unfiltered look at his life like you've never seen before in his documentary, Remember Me Just Like This. The film footage spans from childhood through the making of his latest album and features many of his friends and collaborators including Machine Gun Kelly, Avril Lavigne, Huddy and Travis Barker. We had the pleasure of interviewing girlfriends over Zoom video!Pop-punk duo girlfriends (Travis Mills + Nick Gross)announce their new album (e)motion sickness out June 17th via Big Noise and release two exhilarating new tracks, "High Again" and "Toaster for a Swim." “High Again” mixes different contradictions with a lyrical playfulness akin to Panic! At The Disco and begins with a simple guitar strum, while “Toaster For A Swim” takes the drama of a breakup and turns it up to 11 with a fiery blend of riffs and breathy vocals.(e)motion sickness is the highly anticipated follow-up to the bands' self-titled debut, which was produced by John Feldmann (5 Seconds Of Summer, blink-182, The Used), and included standout tracks like “California,” “Where Were You” (featuring Travis Barker), and “Jessica.” Girlfriends conjure songs that are once pleasingly familiar, warmly unique and passionately vulnerable and (e)motion sickness is just that.“This is the most vulnerable I've been through my music,” Mills says. “The music I made in the past was fun, but it wasn't an accurate representation of anything I was going through in my life. I had profound experiences and tragic losses, but I didn't talk about them. I struggled with severe anxiety and depression. So, there's a lot in girlfriends' songs that I've never said before. This kind of music really allows those topics to come to life and accentuate them.”The two new tracks follow “Missing You” and “Pretty Mouth,” which will also be included on the new album. Channeling the anguish of a breakup into a pure cathartic release, the tracks soar with molten intensity. Praised by Alternative Press, SPIN Magazine, Loudwire and more, girlfriends make music both timely and timeless, while providing a fresh twist to the caffeinated pop-punk they grew up on. In concert, the duo are a live force to be reckoned with. With their energy being magnified tenfold live, girlfriends have sold out venues like The Roxy in Los Angeles and and recently shared the stage with Bad Suns at The Fonda and The Observatory, Santa Ana. Stay tuned for additional tour dates into 2022. We want to hear from you! DED has only been together a little more than four years since the release of their debut album, Mis-An-Thrope, but it is clear that their take-no-prisoners approach has already turned a lot of heads. Originating from Phoenix, AZ, the foursome embodies elements of rock, alternative, and metal, with pop melodies, hooks and choruses, cloaked in some of the densest, most histrionic, headbanging music on the planet. But when you dig beneath the aggressive surface, DED's unexpectedly soulful music is about bringing hope, relief and self-awareness, often speaking to and about the young generations that are contending with many deeply embedded issues in today's society. Rather than the nihilistic, anarchical hellraisers DED might seem to be upon first glance, they're actually mythical heroes desperately trying to save society, not take it down. Joe Cotela (vocals), David Ludlow (guitar), Kyle Koelsch (bass), and Matt Reinhard (drums) are building a community by offering comfort in times of despair. JC sat down with lead singer Joe Cotela to talk about the formation of DED, what it was like to work with producer John Feldmann of Goldfinger, and their upcoming tour with Black Veil Brides.

On today's episode, I do a deep dive into the making and history of The Used' Self-Titled album. We talk about the origin of the band, the demoing process, the release, and the recording process. I give my thoughts on the album and why I think it resonated with fans as much as it did. We also discuss the role of John Feldmann as the producer of this album and the sound that spawned from this time period to define a genre and time period. It was fun to revisit this classic. The Used was released on June 25, 2002 through Reprise Records. The album's sound has been described as screamo, emo and post-hardcore. "The Taste of Ink" is "pretty much about being frustrated and maybe biting on a pen", according to McCracken. McCracken said "Buried Myself Alive" was "about a girl. It's about drugs. It's about loss. It's about being alive, about living". "A Box Full of Sharp Objects" was inspired in part by McCracken's past experiences with drugs. He said it was about "drugs and alcohol and loss and love... and just being stoked that things are always going to get better or always gonna get worse and that's such a great thing". "Blue and Yellow" is about McCracken and Allman's friendship, as the latter explains: "When the band started to really pick up... we were almost not being friends anymore because we were focusing so much time on the band and not on each other".

In technical terms, reverse engineering can be defined in the following manner: The process of discovering the principles of a system through analysis of its structure, function and operation. It often involves taking something apart and analyzing its workings in detail. To begin forward momentum, I apply my own interpretation of reverse engineering to my goals; whereby, I analyze and ‘take apart' precisely what it is I hope to accomplish and in this case we are talking about being successful at music. More specifically, I attempt to build a framework for success by breaking down, in reverse order the steps and tasks that will be required to effectively achieve my ambition. The four keys to reverse engineering for success are: Determine the most basic level of the goal.Ensure that you are committed.Identify as many steps as possible that are required to reach the goal.Take action! ------------ Rockabilia is your One Stop Shop for all band merch with the largest selection of officially licensed music merchandise in the world!
