We are joined by G'Ra and Rihanna from the band Baby Got Back Talk. Forming in 2017, the band have been making catchy, pop punk songs and have attracted a large following. We discuss the band's formation and how they ended up on Wiretap Records. G'Ra recently wrote a piece for the Boston Globe 'A rollicking rebuke to the idea that rock music isn't black music'. This was a pushback against recent comments from Rolling Stone cofounder, Jann Wenner.  Baby Got Back Talk have put together a mixtape full of artists demonstrating that Wenner's argument that woman and people of colour 'didn't articulate at that level' within rock music is nonsense.  The band will also be releasing a new song and video which will accompany the article and mixtape. Keep an eye out for this soon. In the mean time, check out the most recent EP from the band 'Wince, Repeat', available everywhere. Also mentioned at the beginning of this episode are Essex band Sharp Eyes. If you haven't already, check out their fantastic new single 'Past Your Best'. For the past two decades, Go Betty Go have emphatically established themselves as one of punk rock's most exciting forces. A gloriously rough-and-tumble sound with melodic aggression, they bring a rich and engaging energy, loaded with lush atmosphere and, at times, an underlying sense of foreboding.Formed in 2000, in the suburbs of Glendale, California, they entered the LA scene when they were all teens. Go Betty Go is driven by Betty Cisneros' big, roaring guitar, singer Nicolette Vilar's soulful, siren call and the momentous urgency of Michelle Rangel's bass and Aixa Vilar's tumultuous drumming. The Latina Punk Quartet swiftly ascended from local shows to a standing-room-only weeknight residency at Los Angeles dive Mr. T's Bowl, to a national reputation via reams of critical acclaim and non-stop gigging.Go Betty Go surged through several Warped tours, frequent cross-country tours, an attention-getting invasion of South by Southwest and seemingly had it made. With the release of 2005's "Nothing is More", their first full-length album on Side One Dummy Records, they set out to tour yet again. They never finished it—Nicolette, exhausted, unhappy and burned out, suddenly quit. She walked away and the band's remaining members found themselves at a crossroads.Miraculously and reunited, after a friend suggested a one-off 2012 gig, all four original members found themselves back together on stage. As if the band had a life of its own, Go Betty Go was back as suddenly as they had split years earlier. After requests from fans and venues alike to play one last show together, the ladies of GBG gave in to what they thought was their final farewell show, but once they hit the stage, the chemistry that had once brought them together was restored and they were officially back. That renewal and excitement crackled through their last release “Reboot”, like a high-voltage jolt of electricity, reclaiming their rightful prominence as some of the brightest, boldest women in punk rock. They continued to plow in full force, playing cross-country festivals and venues alike. But like the rest of the world, the band halted and canceled all touring in 2020 due to the pandemic. In 2022, Go Betty Go was hit yet again with their most difficult challenge to date. As the band prepared to enter the studio and record their next album, Betty was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. The news was hard, but it brought them closer than ever. They worked around Betty's grueling doctor visits, chemotherapy, and surgeries, and when she was having her better days, they managed to squeeze out their latest studio recording “Black and Blue”. The name refers to the difficult and bruised circumstances that the band has dealt with. With the help and support of GBG fans and the music community alike, they all have helped support Betty with her GoFundMe page and through messages of love and support. The band sees no other road, but the one to recovery, as Betty continues her treatment towards being cancer-free. They are optimistically hopeful, supporting Betty as she works on beating her cancer.Go Betty Go's upcoming album “Black and Blue” will be out in early 2024 via LA-based indie label Wiretap Records. Thanks for listening!!! Phil, Jake & Jason welcome Matt Hock back to the pod to rank Friday (the day of the week), the 90s movie Friday, and the song “Friday” by Rebecca Black on the List of Every Damn Thing. If you haven't already, check out Matt's band! You can get Space Cadet's record “Lion On A Leash” on Wiretap Records, listen to them on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram (@space_cadet_band).If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We get into some Bob's Burgers-style punny business right away, but don't worry it's brief. For the second episode in a row, Gingerdead Man (starring Gary Busey) finds its way into our conversation. “Roadie Friday” is the day before the day off on tour. Friday is a state of mind. TGI Fridays was a really revolutionary idea when it first came about. The premise was that it was a bar that women would feel comfortable visiting. The bar in the movie Cocktail where Tom Cruise recites poetry is based on TGI Fridays. Freaky Fridays are when you switch bodies with your parent. Freya is the mother of Thor and Friday is named for her the way Thursday is named for him. Here's DJ Pooh running and crying. Def Comedy Jam was a show on HBO where urban comedians could perform. The most famous set ever was probably Bernie Mac's first appearance but Chris Tucker's was really good too.  Phil was wrong here, there is no "other Chris Tucker". Deebo Samuel plays football for the San Francisco 49ers. Deebo is not his legal name but he confirms that it came from the movie Friday. We note how great Friday's soundtrack is, with songs like “Keep Their Heads Ringin” by Dr. Dre, “Friday” by Ice Cube & “Hoochie Mama” by 2 Live Crew. Jake compares Friday to two of his favorite books Cannery Row & Tortilla Flat (both by John Steinbeck). He also compares it to his new favorite TV show to insist everyone watch: Blindspotting (it's on Starz so you'll have to get a promotional subscription and binge the show within a month). Other songs discussed include “Little Saint Nick” by The Beach Boys, “American Pie” by Don McLean & “Do You Know the Way to San Jose” by Dionne Warwick. Jason sincerely apologizes for unknowingly dead-naming Cara Cunningham. Here's the 2021 hyperpop remix of “Friday” featuring Big Freedia and others. And go to one of their upcoming shows! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: We mention Dave's previous band The Explosion, which he was in with friends-and-guests-of-the-pod and guests Matt Hock and Andrew Black. But we somehow fail to mention The Loved Ones, which he was in with other friend-and-guest-of-the-pod (and other Dave) Dave Hause. We couldn't find an image of Jake's monkey-on-a-skateboard The Explosion t-shirt, but you should check out the other incredible artwork of Linas Garsys. Phil has a bestiary, which is a book about all animals, translated from Latin by T.H. White (who wrote The Sword in the Stone and a lot of other things). You can read the bestiary here. If you like dogs, Dave recommends the TV show Lucky Dog. Poochie from The Simpsons is a dog who rocks the telly. He's half Joe Camel and the third Fonzerelli. He's a kung-fu hippie from the Gangster City. He's a rapping surfer. You're the fool he pities. Here's the scene from Snatch that Jake refers to. Cats' eyes emit light rays. We don't know if this is because of science or because of magic. Probably both.  The CDC's FAQ on toxoplasmosis doesn't mention attraction to cats as a symptom, but it doesn't refute it either. Jake suspects the Batman Returns version of Selena Kyle aka Catwoman has toxoplasmosis. We talk about the 1980s cartoon Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats, which Phil only ever saw the second segment of growing up, because of the scheduling. The first segment was about Heathcliff doing the kind of things he does in the newspaper comic strip. The second segment was about a group of cats who lived in a junkyard, led by Riff Raff, an orange cat who wears a big white hat. In South America, guinea pigs are frequently eaten, and are called cuy, probably named after the sound they make. Phil mentions seeing them in the frozen food section at Trade Fair supermarket in Astoria Queens, NY. There was an escaped capybara in California, and friend-of-the-pod Victor made twitter for it. And go to one of their upcoming shows! If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: In the episode, Phil talks about @tweakseason on TikTok. Phil doesn't have TikTok but he has a summary of @tweakseason's activities on his desk every Monday morning. Here's a youtube compilation it's in the genre of "guy walking around NYC". Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser is a book about fast food in America. We read it a long time ago but we remember it was heavy on the Carl's Jr. One of the last chapters is about how everything they just said about how bad the industry is doesn't really apply to In-N-Out - they pay their workers better, produce better quality food, etc. Shake Shack is a fast-casual hamburger chain based in NYC (which is now nationwide). According to Phil, the burger is better than In-N-Out but it costs three times as much.  We mention Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg again. Go there. Dick's is the place where the cool hang out. The swass like to play, and the rich flaunt clout. It's a burger place in Seattle. In an alternate universe it took off in popularity instead of In-N-Out. Sir Mix-A-Lot is a Seattle-based rapper and HAM radio enthusiast. Waffle House is an all-day breakfast chain based in the Southeast. When fights happen at Waffle House, they often end up on social media. Veggie Grill is a vegetarian fast food chain on the West Coast, as well as in New York and Massachusetts. It's pretty much wherever coastal elites like to be, and it's good food. Taco Time is a Mexican fast food chain in the western U.S., but not California. El Pollo Loco deserves to be ranked later. It's Phil's favorite fast-food chain. "Thighvertising" came up in Phil's search for portmanteaus. He admits Jake was right it should be called “adverthighsing”. James Joyce coined the term “Scandiknavery” in Finnegan's Wake'. It's pretty specific but we're looking forward to using it.  Phil thinks “pegacorn is” a bad one because "Winged Unicorn" just sounds better. Other portmanteaus discussed include “bodacious”, “throuple”, “guesstimate” and “chillax”. After plugging his own shows, Matt makes sure to plug our good friend Dave Hause's upcoming shows in November. Phil and Jake are joined by returning guest "Million Dollar" Matt Hock (from Space Cadet & The Explosion) to rank ice cream trucks and the New York City borough of Brooklyn on the List of Every Damn Thing.Get Space Cadet's record “Lion On A Leash” on Wiretap Records, listen to them on Spotify, and follow them on Instagram (@space_cadet_band). Maybe even see them play live.If you have something to add to the list, email it to list@everydamnthing.net (or get at us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook).SHOW NOTES: Here's the classic Eddie Murphy ice cream truck bit that taught us everything we know. Mister Softee is a soft-serve truck that drives around in the mid-Atlantic states. While trying to explain the business benefits of soft-serve, Phil refers to the movie The Founder, which is about McDonalds. One of the central issues in the movie is the original founders of McDonalds want to have real ice cream shakes but storing ice cream is very expensive due to the refrigeration. Soft serve ice cream is much cheaper because it doesn't need to be refrigerated while in transit or storage. A meager amount of research leads us to the stance that trucks (aka lorries) are different from vans. The racist version of “Turkey in the Straw” that Phil refers to was recorded in 1916, just a few years before Harry Burt created the first ice cream truck. So it follows that this version may be the one people knew in the early days of ice cream truckin'. Does sound travel further in warmer weather? There are scientists who will say it travels faster in the summer heat and humidity, but that it travels further in the winter. We think it's mostly due to having windows open in the summer. Does ice cream sell better on rainy days? This is some purely anecdotal BS that Phil heard in grade school from a guy who worked at an ice cream shop, and has accepted as the truth. He has no documented proof for this. He looked online but has found nothing that backs it up. When Jake talks about the melody from “Ice Cream Man” by Dru Down (featuring Luniz), he's talking about the main part of the song, not the intro featuring “Pop Goes the Weasel”. A few years after this song came out, Master P released a song by the same name (with a similar intro), but it's not nearly as catchy. Another song by a Bay Area rapper apparently played by some ice cream trucks is “Ice Cream” by Andre Nikatina, which is pretty much just a “Turkey In the Straw” remix. Here's the scene from Friday where the ice cream truck is used as a front for a drug dealer. Western Beef is a mid-Atlantic supermarket chain whose mascot is a cactus in a cowboy hat. Their old CEO had mafia ties. The location Phil was thinking about is at 44 Empire Blvd by the park. Fud is a brand of hot dogs from Mexico. Fuddhism is a restaurant with a goofy name in Truckee, CA. Junior's Cheesecake is a place where Matt likes to urinate. Christie's Jamaican Patties is now closed. It's described as beloved in the linked article so you know it wasn't just Phil that liked it. Taqueria Diana in Williamsburg is an outstanding place to get Mexican food (and mezcal). If you're hungry and in Brooklyn, go there. In fact, if you're anywhere in New York City, go there. The Williamsburg location is the best. Here's the EDT episode featuring Efrem Schulz where he helped us rank “Weird Al” Yankovic over Bruce Springsteen. ALSO DISCUSSED IN THIS EPISODE:wheat germ * carob * quiescently frozen desserts * holy communion * In-N-Out Burger * “It's Now or Never” by Elvis Presley * Glasgow Ice Cream Wars * It's-It * peanut butter ice cream * interspecies animal friends * firefighters * Bill Paxton * rye bread * Christmas trees * pancakes * Coney Island * Hawaii * air conditioning * Jersey Shore * fast fashion * Mendocino CountyBelow are the Top Ten and Bottom Top items on List of Every Damn Thing as of this episode (for the complete up-to-date list, go here):TOP TEN: Dolly Parton - person interspecies animal friends - idea sex - idea Clement Street in San Francisco - location Prince - person It's-It - food Cher - person Pee-Wee Herman - fictional character Donald Duck - fictional character Hank Williams - person BOTTOM TEN:170. Episode 22: IN A WORLD... here's the deal. Some know him as Andy, some as Andrew, others as Andrew James McQueen- in the industry, they simply call him "McQueen the Swiss Army Knife". He is one of the camera operators for our local sports teams (Sockers and Gulls) and has worked on many Films, Documentaries, and Reality TV shows for the past 20 years after living the band life. We sat down outside of Harvest Kitchen to catch up on life, think about regrets versus mistakes, and to figure out how to get along with our parents. Do you need some camera work or voice over for your business or anything? You can find out more about McQueen's adventures in filming and voice over work online at instagram.com/mcqueen_studios and his personal page instagram.com/mcqeeen (yes that is a triple E) and some of his work is on his IMDB page. (If you couldn't tell, that is his voice doing the outro for this episode) ------------------------------ Music in this episode: Lil bit of the opening track by Space Cadet, just playing their latest vinyl release "Lion on a Leash" on Wiretap Records, had to catch some of that vibe right into the microphone. Ending song "The Broken" by Skratchline - McQueen sang on their last EP, partnering up with Dr Shawn Beaty from Moral Issue and Dogwood to go full circle on our collective North SD County music relations. ----------------------------- catch up with Chef Josh on the Harvest Kitchen food truck on Sunday 6/20 at Dogleg Brewing Co-- we're doing some beer pairings, and watching the last day of the US Open tourney. Brighton, UK punk rock powerhouse HARKER are back with a new single "The Beast Must Die." Harker - "The Beast Must Die" (Official Music Video) https://youtu.be/5PlPvF_7uOk The track appears on the band's upcoming LP "Axiom" out April 23rd on Wiretap Records, Disconnect Disconnect Records, Shield Recordings, Fixing A Whole Records. "The Beast Must Die' is based on the idea of 'Mono-consciousness' by English writer Colin Wilson – as a philosopher, Wilsons writing was heavily focused on striving to live with a heightened sense of meaning and avoiding a closed mindset. This track is a study of characters with a lack of empathy and spirituality, in the end leading to apathy for existence. 'Mono-consciousness' is a beast that lurks inside, and needs to be hunted before it takes control of of us."- Mark Boniface (singer/guitarist) What others have said about Harker: "...the first great punk record of 2018.."- Alreadyheard It's a punk thriller. Harker are gifted. Their music highlights punk at its best. Their honest heart-pullers are beautiful."- Punkanormal Activity "Reminded me of some of the early 1990s punk from the likes of Husker Du and The Meat Puppets..."- Punk Online "Don't sleep on this album; you're unlikely to find a UK punk album that hits this hard for a while now."- The Soundboard Reviews "...infectious pop-punk tunes with teeth."- ThePunkSite "we get a real Seaway meets Jimmy Eat World vibe, and that's one gnarly combo" - MOSH "a full fleshed-out ruckus punk rock assault" - Already Heard Harker: Mark Boniface– guitar & vocals Phoebe Saunders - bass & vocals Tony Ware - guitar Matt Claxton - drums Harker online: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HRKRUK/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/HRKRUK Web: http://www.hrkr.co.uk/ This episode is proudly brought to you by: #Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off #LootCrate : http://loot.cr/3rWoAnw Code "Suckitpodcast" for 15% off #CBD #Wildflowerhemp https://wildflowerhempco.com/ BUY MERCH!!!!! #Merch Store: https://www.dckproductions.com/shop Follow me: https://www.instagram.com/suckitpodcast https://www.facebook.com/suckitpodcast https://www.twitter.com/suckit_podcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support

Andy is joined by Kendra Sheetz (editor of The Bad Copy), Rob Castellon (founder of Wiretap Records), John Gentile (feature editor of Punknews.org), three of the four members of Philadelphia ska band Catbite, and Dominic Davi (bassist of Tsunami Bomb). This week, Andy is joined by Jeff Berman of the band Divided Heaven. They just released a brand new single called "They Poisoned Our Fathers", out now via Smartpunk Records. The song is a scathing commentary on the division that has taken place in the United States, and features Lydia Loveless as an accompanying vocalist. Divided Heaven have released several records over the years, most recently the EP Cold War Hangover, and the full-length COLD WAR via Wiretap Records. During this episode, Jeff and I discuss the new single and what it's message encompasses. We dig into how there is a glut of artists making content, but not always quality content and why that can be harmful sometimes. We go over a few of Jeff's favorite artists that you may have never heard of, and he also gives me his top 5 desert island albums. We had the pleasure of interviewing In Parallel over Zoom video! The seeds of In Parallel were planted late at night almost 5+ years ago in the back room of a picture frame shop. With nothing more than a looped electronic drum sample and a few guitars, the first notes became the framework of the song "Bridge and Tunnel." This particular song and its lyric "walk through waves and wade where others won't - choose your words, say what others don't" became a mission statement of sorts - a musical rebirth for its four members. It took multiple recordings for the band to get all the sounds on their debut EP 'Broken Codes' correct - so much so that they scrapped the first two versions entirely. The band was inspired by their love of dark 80’s pop and 90’s shoegaze and post-hardcore - creating a sound that aims to balance contrastingly melodic, expansive and ambient moments. In Parallel consists of Lance Black, Jesse Fine, Ryan Parrish and Mark Nash. The band recorded the EP in Nashville with the help of their most devoted fans from previous projects (Celebrity/Hopesfall) through a crowdfunding campaign. Bypassing the traditional structure of the music industry gave the three-piece group the freedom to lean into technology, ultimately treading new territory both sonically and lyrically. In Parallel are debuting the first track and corresponding music lyric video off their upcoming new EP “Fashioner” out September 4th on Wiretap Records. We want to hear from you! I get in to why these labels matter and how they become as important as the bands that they sign. Check out the Power Chord Hour radio show every Friday night at 10 est on 107.9 WRFA in Jamestown, NY, stream the station online at wrfalp.com/streaming/ or listen on the WRFA mobile app Stay connected with the show! email me for FREE Power Chord Hour pins - powerchordhour@gmail.com Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/powerchordhour Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/powerchordhour/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/powerchordhour/ Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6jTfzjB3-mzmWM-51c8Lgg Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/user/kzavhk5ghelpnthfby9o41gnr?si=4WvOdgAmSsKoswf_HTh_MgBig thanks to Podcorn for sponsoring this episode. Welcome to the 22nd episode of "Talkin' with Andrew and Chris"! We are back with another very special episode, today's guest is Tom Kunzman, of Punk Rock band  "18th & Addison"!   18th & Addison is an eclectic pop-rock/punk duo consisting of Tom Kunzman and Kait DiBenedetto. Fearlessly blending all of their musical influences from Punk Rock to 80’s New Wave to 90's alternative and Power Pop, 18th & Addison are creating a style of music to proudly call their own. With their ferociously honest yet poetic lyrical content, unapologetic punch-in-the-gut guitar riffs and power house drumming to drive it all home, they are proving that they are here to stay. The duo has been releasing music since late 2014 and have produced two EPs and a full length album independently amidst booking their own regional tours and shows in support of each one. 18th & Addison’s brand new single entitled “Leeches” will be it’s first release accompanied by a music video with Wiretap Records and also a brand new EP is due in September 2019. An obsessive record collector since third grade, Josh Berwanger's adoration for glam-tinged rock and synth-heavy new-wave led to the formation of indie quintet The Anniversary, who toured heavily in the early 2000's behind a pair of full-lengths for the Vagrant label at its zenith. On today's program, Josh dishes about his days behind the counter at Lawrence, KS record store Love Garden, spotlights some rare finds in his collection, remembers how having the band's music on vinyl was always part of their record contract, and shares his thoughts on how scaling vinyl production back could benefit the industry long term. We also dig into his latest project Radar State, formed with longtime pals Matt Pryor and Jim Suptic of The Get Up Kids and Gadjits drummer Adam Phillips. We had originally planned to not record at all during the summer. But the temptation to keep our show going was given in to when we booked Sloppy Jane for the month of June. But as you all might know, sometimes original plans fall through. Sloppy Jane cancelled and we were there yet again: No shows for the summer. The reason we try not to book as many shows during June through August is that our garage gets hot as fuck. Really. If it's 90 degrees outside, you bet your ass we got a triple digit temp in the garage. But we didn't want to pass up an opportunity to have a really good band on the show. And seeing as they were about to release their new EP, we thought it was a no brainer to have Watch for Horses on the show instead. They got the sound. They got the attitude. And did I mention that they have THE sound? And the cool thing about the recording was that it wasn't a hot ass day, so being in the garage was bearable. Usually we try to describe the way a band sounds on these descriptions but you should do it yourself. Why let us taint your brain with what we already know? Go ahead and discover a band that's got their sound and overall shit together. Got that? Well let's rate it at least: 10/10. Kilson Street Ratings.... Yea. We would like to send a very special Thanks to Rob Castellon from Wiretap Records for setting us up with Watch for Horses. Songs performed are "Daydream" & "Hummingbird" from their newest EP Maladaptive Daydream, available NOW on their Bandcamp. Want MORE? Make sure you subscribe to our channel on the video below. And share this page with your friends and family. We can only grow and make more cool videos like this with your continued support. Thank you!
