March 25, 2022 - Los Angeles, CA – Fifth wave emo rock band Tiny Stills is excited to share their Half Way Home Session, premiering now on Variance Magazine. Filmed at California's Half Way Home Studios, the session features recent singles “Bleeding Out” and “Everything Is Going Great,” as well as new song “Bury The Hatchet.” The band shares: “It was fantastic to finally capture our performance at Half Way Home! The crew there is fantastic. We can't wait to do it again.” Tiny Stills is made up of real life friends who actually like each other; Kailynn West, Chris Clark, Mike Diggs, and AJ Peacox. You can call them Bubble Grunge, but in their hearts they know the genre that resonates with them is truly 'Vomit Pop.' Tiny Stills formed in 2013 and through the years has shared the stage with Bayside's Anthony Raneri, Motion City Soundtrack, Andy Jackson (Hot Rod Circuit), Reggie and the Full Effect, the Smoking Popes and Letters to Cleo. After years of honing their bittersweet emulsion of pop punk and emo with toothy lyrics, crunchy guitars and catchy melodies, one message still resonates loud and clear - even the worst days have a silver lining, at least you're not alone. A Tiger Made of Lightning released one of my songs of 2020 with their debut single "exhausted". It encompassed what so many of us were feeling, with a strong, passionate sound, and without pulling any punches. At the same time there was an undercurrent of positivity that served as a reminder that not everything was shit. That positivity is brought even further in the follow-up single and the soon to be released debut EP, "It's Chaos, Be Kind." Today we're discussing the project's origin, the message, the transition from solo project to full band, and what's to come. We are here, the final double digit episode of Fly On The Call! Before we hit episode 100 and the two year anniversary, I wanted to take a quick second to talk about the origins of the show, and my goals for it, reflect on the past two years, and talk a little about the future. I hope you don't mind me taking a brief moment to get corny on the main. Thank you for listening, for supporting this podcast as well as the bands I speak to, and for coming along for the ride - it means so much to me. Arms Like Roses came together in an almost spur of the moment way and even the band themselves are almost surprised at how far they've come. Their debut EP, Get Some Sleep, melds classic emo and post-hardcore sounds with a plethora of other genres, eventually leading to a more concise vision for LP1, which is currently being finished up. The band just released an acoustic follow-up EP, Past Midnight, and have hit the ground running now that they are able to play shows again. We're talking about their initial formation, the effect the pandemic had on their writing process, and much more. Telethon are back! I say this both referring to the fact that they were one of the first guests on Fly On The Call, way back in episode two, and that they just released their ripper of a new record, Swim Out Past The Breakers. For those unfamiliar with the band, they are a hard rockin', poppin', genre swappin' good ole time! The new album has plenty of features, flourishes that couldn't have been added with a standardized studio experience, and much more to keep your ears busy. Last year, The Big Easy captured the sound of a DIY basement show when they were not possible. The Long Year and its post-script single, "All Saints Day", can't be pigeonholed into a single genre, but instead by a mindset. They hyper-personal lyricism combined with a melting pot of sounds leads to a unique and cohesive experience. On the first of two episodes of Fly On The Call today we discuss the album as a project that has now become its own tangible thing, capturing the lofi sound and energy without sacrificing quality, how the band is continuing to make sure things stay fresh, and more. As we come to an end of the first week of this two week celebration of Fly On The Call, I'm stoked to bring you my conversation with The Spins. They are a sunshiney alternative indie band with hints of emo, pop punk, and plenty of other genres that will catch your ear. Their debut LP, Not If, But When, dropped earlier this summer and are the perfect vibe for the season. Today we're talking influences, production, creating an album experience rather than releasing simply a collection of songs, and more. Near Dark is a melodic punk project that came together remotely as a pandemic project with Matt Wilson as their vocalist. They released their debut EP, Silver Linings, earlier this year and have another one on the way soon. Today's discussion hits on the formation of the band before moving over to discuss the 15th anniversary of Munity! by Set Your Goals. We talk about the album, the touring, the nature of the music industry, and the abundant fun positivity behind the music that served as a proof of concept for what is now called easycore. Palette Knife's debut LP, Ponderosa Snake House and the Chamber Of Bullshit, is a polished blend of emo, math rock, and post hardcore. Their confessional lyricism and references to media that they're earnestly passionate about make it hard not to connect with the music. On today's episode we discuss the creation of the album, crafting it as a singular experience, a last minute connection with Take This To Heart Records, and what went into the eye catching artwork. Fly On The Call is back, baby! For the next two weeks I will be dropping episodes Monday-Friday, leading up to episode 100, a brand new theme song, and the two year anniversary of the show! Today's guest is Alyse Vellturo of PRONOUN. Her newest EP, OMG I MADE IT, brings her lush, bedroom sounds to new heights while bringing back the same painfully relatable style of lyrics. We're talking all about the new release, the emotions, making happy music with sad messages, and a whole lot more. Dig it! America Part Two is aggressive and, at times, abrasive. Their lyrics seek to shed an honest light on their experiences as young adults in America. In the first of three episodes this week, I am talking to Baby Boys. Their debut full length, Threesome, is a challenging, but worthwhile listen. The band, made up of Jake Luppen and Nathan Stocker of Hippo Campus and rounded out with Caleb Hinz, has one simple rule: say "yes" to everything. This leads to plenty of improvisation, risk taking, and an overall unhinged feel to the music. It was a ton of fun to unpack the lightning speed combined writing/recording process and get to the core of what makes this band so unique. We're talking all about their EP, Adirondack, which will be out this Friday and their first release since 2014. We discuss the record as a cohesive piece, creating the huge dynamics, recording with Bartees Strange, and even the process of deciding to release something as personal as these songs are. Record Setter released a real barn burner of an album at the end of last year with I Owe You Nothing. Sonically, it hits all the emo/screamo notes you'd want and more, while it is lyrically full of dark honesty. It's an "album" album and one that was made to be played live. Today's a goodie! I'm talking to Downhaul, one of my favorite bands, who have their sophomore LP, PROOF, coming out May 21st. It's a totally new direction for the band with different goals & environments in mind, expanding the scope of their dynamics, playing with silence, & ushering in some dark, almost primal, sounds. Today's guest is coming at you all the way from Australia! I'm talking to Skegss, who recently had their first #1 debut on the Australian charts with their album, Rehearsal. Their rocking, sunshiny vibes are infections and they have an energy that is undeniable. Today on Fly On The Call I'm talking to Leafing, a mathy emo band from Brooklyn. At the start of 2021, they released their debut full-length, which came together during the early stages of the pandemic. While the band had played a couple of shows before things ground to a halt, the album was created together in isolation with the members forced to adapt and learn how to share ideas and create a cohesive work of art without being physically in the same space. This dual creative constriction/freedom clearly paid off because not only did they make a great record, they also wrote a large portion of another. Tune in to hear all about it! Really From released their self-titled album last month and it is a doozy. Blending together elements of emo, indie, math rock, and jazz, the band puts just as much focus on the silences. Their only goal is to develop their talents and allow them to guide the way, rather than chasing a specific sound. And the product of that is a record that truly stands as a piece of art. We dive deep on the album, investing in yourself, creating a sound that is huge, and a whole lot more. Plus, the second installment of What's The Buzz? where music writer Joel Funk and I break down the songs we've had on repeat lately. Enjoy! TOLEDO are a band not boxed in by genre, taking parts from a number of pop and rock influences to create lush sounds that transport the listener to somewhere else. Their most recent release, Jockeys of Love, is a snapshot of a specific time and an experiment in following musical instincts, created in the isolation of a parent's attic at the start of quarantine. Future Teens are fresh off the release of their EP, Deliberately Alive, which is the follow-up to an album that has been on extremely heavy rotation for me over the last year, Breakup Season. The band's signature "bummer pop" sound continues to evolve while delivering some of the most emotionally open lyrics in the scene. On today's episode of Fly On The Call I am speaking to Casey Cavaliere, producer at True Level Studio and guitarist of The Wonder Years! Over the last year a main focus of his work at True Level Studio has been adapted for the virtual world through one-on-one artist development sessions covering songwriting, the business side of music, and more. We talk about how this back to the basics approach has helped both the artist he works with and Casey himself, his guiding principles for songwriting and production, and wrap things up with some Wonder Years related discussion.
