Editor's note: Today's special episode comes to us from our friends at The Conduit, who operate under the Crewest Studio network of podcasts alongside NOT REAL ART. In the ‘90s, rock was rock, hip-hop was hip-hop, and never the twain did meet. Then, at the turn of the century, a 73-minute, genre-bending bomb exploded onto the music scene, shattering notions about the limits of creativity and collaboration. Uneasy Listening, Vol. I, a joint record from like-minded DJs P and Z-Trip, broke genre conventions by mixing rock ‘n' roll mainstays like Rush and Pat Benatar with dance and hip-hop cuts from Madonna, Redman, and The Pharcyde.Welcome to The Conduit, a podcast featuring candid conversations with professional musicians who give listeners the unvarnished truth about being an artist in the music industry. In today's episode, L.A.-based DJ, producer, and musician Dan Ubick (aka Constantine “Connie” Price) sits down with Zach Sciacca (better known as DJ Z-Trip) to discuss the musician's pioneering work as a key player in the mash-ups movement.“It wasn't like I set out to become a DJ,” says Z-Trip, whose Uneasy Listening arrived on the scene in 2001, just as samples, remixes, and mashups were gaining credibility as a valid form of self-expression. “It was very much about me having this music and wanting to share it,” he continues. “Once I realized that I could put it together and I could expose people to the things that I liked, the DJ thing came into play.” Widely known as both the godfather of mashups and “America's Best DJ,” an award he received in 2009 from the DJ Times, Z-Trip is also renowned for his technical abilities and production skills. Over the years, he's collaborated with innovative artists like Nas, Beck, Public Enemy, and DJ Shadow, remixing songs from artists as varied as Bob Marley and the Butthole Surfers. In his interview, Z-Trip shares the brightest pearls of wisdom he's pocketed along the way: “One thing I learned through the arc of my whole career is take chances,” he says. “Be risky, try to push boundaries. Don't always play it safe. There's a time to play it safe, there's a time to lock in.”Z-Trip also touches on his favorite genre-bending tracks (see Afrika Bambaataa's “Planet Rock”), why creative consistency trumps big milestones, and how to find like-minded artists traveling a similar career path. His advice to aspiring DJs? “Every gig, go into it like it's your first [and last],” he says, adding, “put your heart and fucking soul into it because you never know who's watching.” Key Points From This Episode:How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The diverse collection of 12-inch singles that led him to become a DJ.Why ‘Rock the Bells' by LL Cool J epitomizes Zach's genre-bending style.Zach's belief in pushing boundaries rather than chasing money or trends. The unique sense of discovery that attracted him to hip-hop.Talent over appearance: the freaks, geeks, and outcasts that were also drawn to the genre.Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music; which started with pause tapes. The story of the ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of...

Today we have an absolute treat for you. We are revisiting a conversation from a few years ago with a legend in the world of music, a man who has continued to define, then re-define the art of DJing—none other than DJ Z-Trip.Z-Trip is considered one of the founding fathers of the mash-up movement, seamlessly blending genres from rock to hip-hop, jazz to electronica. His ability to read the room and adapt in real-time is almost supernatural, and it's a skill that not only puts him in high demand but has also earned him awards and accolades. But what's fascinating is that Z-Trip is not just a master of mixing tracks; he's a master of mixing ideas, cultures, and even business models. In today's conversation, we're going to dive deep into the creative process that allows Z-Trip to stay consistently ahead of the curve. We'll explore how he manages the tension between art and commerce, and how he found his unique voice. So whether you're a musician, a designer, an entrepreneur, or just someone looking to tap into your own creative potential, today's episode is a masterclass in navigating the complexities of modern creativity.Oh, and one more thing - Z-Trip actually took this conversation and re-mixed it before we originally released it. Also, if you'd like to hear a remix that Z-Trip did of an entire episode of the podcast, you can listen to it here. Get ready to be inspired in the best ways by Z-Trip. I once asked world-famous DJ Z-Trip how he discovered his voice as an artist, and he used the analogy of a tree. He said that when he began his career, he—like everyone else—was climbing the trunk of the tree because it is the safest and most stable part. However, as he began to progress in his career, he began to step out onto branches that took him farther away from the trunk, or what was expected. His DJ peers won- dered what he was doing, because he was taking risks with his work that separated him from the pack and could result in failure or rejection by the industry. However, Z-Trip said that as he began to venture out onto new branches, he became so unique from other DJs that he began to carve his own space in the market, defined by his own voice. People were coming to him for the unique thing that only he could do.So much of the process of discovering the unique value you offer is in choosing to step out onto one branch at a time, separating yourself a little bit from the predictability and stability of the trunk. Over time, you define your own space until soon you are sitting all alone out at the end of a winding branch. To develop a unique voice, you must venture away from security and what's expected. However, it's best to do it one small decision at a time. What “branch” can you step out onto to separate you from the pack?
Zach Sciacca, aka DJ Z-Trip is a conduit for the power of music AND the love of music. He has a history of working alongside the world's greatest artists including Chuck D & Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Biz Markie and the list of legends goes on (check the list of WORKS below*) His work showcases the connectivity that music brings us across lifetimes, friendships, memories… Music is one of—if not THE most—transformational tool we have. But when a song gets mashed with another, it transcends everything and becomes something entirely new. THAT power is something Z-Trip has mastered and even pioneered, in the truest sense of the word. Without Z-Trip, the modern-day mash-up doesn't exist in music. His genius shows up in his ability to simultaneously create containers of celebration & containers of healing—both needed. It IS evolutions in music like this that have helped make me who I am today. What DJ Z-Trip DOES (for a living and for life) honors the past, present, and future all at once. Time is transcended. Feelings are processed. Memories are made and people are remembered. I bring him on today as my dear friend and someone I've been a fan of since before our friendship (shoutout Ant Demby for bringing us together at the Playlist retreat)—and let this stand as a reminder that bigging up your friends is always, always the move. Few DJs have had as big an impact on music and culture as Zach Sciacca, nor do they work as hard. Whether in the studio, behind the decks, or behind the scenes, he is always pushing the boundaries and honing his craft. Better known as DJ Z-Trip, Zach is a genre-bending Los Angeles musician, the recipient of the 2009 America's Best DJ Award, and a pioneer of the mashup movement. As a producer, he has worked with incredible artists across genres, including the likes of LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Kasabian, and Dan the Automator. His love for all styles of music and how they can work together is groundbreaking and inspiring, and his innate funkiness and technical ability have led him to compose scores for video games like EA Skate, create mashups for Activision's DJ Hero, and score music for films such as Infamy, La Bare, and Bob Marley: Legend Remixed. In today's conversation, Zach shares some major pearls of wisdom about the importance of pushing the boundaries whenever you have the chance and investing your energy in constant evolution, not what sells or attracts the most followers. We also touch on how the pandemic helped him reconnect with his ‘why' and why he believes that true success is about the aggregate, not the benchmarks. Zach has a work ethic to be admired, as well as a deep love for music, an approachable demeanor, and a relentlessly positive attitude, and listeners will benefit greatly from hearing his story today. We hope you'll join us! Key Points From This Episode: How the contrasting worlds of New York and Arizona influenced Zach's taste in music. The story of how his collection of 12-inch singles led Zach to become a DJ. Some favorite examples of tracks that blend genres, like Afrika Bambaataa's ‘Planet Rock'. The boundary-pushing sampling and discovery that drew Zach to hip hop. Insight into Zach's process of producing his own music, which started with pause tapes. The ‘Rockstar' track on Return of the DJ that caught the attention of Zach's peers. Why he believes that the mashup requires a certain level of open-mindedness. The value of working with those on the same trajectory as you, rather than more established artists, and building the right team. Key lessons from Zach's career: be risky, push boundaries, and don't always play it safe! The work ethic and commitment to improvement that Zach demonstrates every day. What the pandemic taught him about reconnecting with his ‘why'. How live streaming and virtual raves influenced his practice and his mindset. Zach shares his belief in staying true to himself and allowing the universe to provide. Why he believes that success is about the aggregate, not about hitting benchmarks. His advice for DJs: play every gig like it's your first and your last! He cautions musicians against getting caught up in the numbers, likes, and followers. My book Louder Than Words begins with the line “attention for your work is not a birthright.” I believe this to the core of my being. Some people think that simply making something great entitles them to the attention of people around them, but it's simply not true. If you want their attention, you must earn it. This is equally true in leadership, sales, or any other arena where you must cultivate awareness and attention for your ideas in order to succeed. The best way to capture attention is through the power of story. Story binds us. It reminds us of what we have in common. It builds empathy and trust. And, it allows you to leverage common ground to inspire people to move toward your vision. Think about the last time you were inspired by someone. I guarantee it was because they were sharing a story that resonated to the core of your being. We are defined by the stories we believe. On this episode, we're going to be talking about the power of story, and how leaders can use it to help those on their team do better work, stay aligned, and produce great work each day. Today we're beginning a new podcast series called The Big Idea, in which we'll cover the core concepts from each of Todd Henry's first four books. This episode is devoted to the first book, The Accidental Creative. Key ideas from this episode: The goal for create on demand professionals should be to be prolific, brilliant, and healthy in life and in work. If you don't get the healthypiece right, you will eventually lose the prolific and brilliant piece as well. You need to be mindful of the assassins - dissonance, fear, expectation escalation - and build practices to help you avoid them. There are five key areas of creative rhythm - Focus, Relationships, Energy, Stimuli, Hours - that will help you sustain brilliant work over time. You should build checkpoints into your life to help you re-evaluate and adapt your rhythms as necessary from season to season. Additional resources: You can listen to DJ Z-Trip'sre-mix of Adaptive Rhythmsfor an overview of the concept. How dissonace steals your creative edge. How expectation escalation keeps you in your comfort zone. Get your copy of The Accidental Creative. === Today's episode is sponsored by Gusto. Get three months free when you run your first payroll. My question for you this week is very simple: where is your sacred space? Do you have a place in your life where you go in order to retreat from the world, to think, to write, to create, to read? Do you have a dedicated space where you can simply play with ideas, free from the pressure of the world and without concern for what anyone else might think? It's important to have such a space, and on this week's episode I share how you can make one happen. ==== Today's episode is sponsored by Skillshare, the place to learn new skills and take your work and life to the next level.
