In this week's episode of Spinsterhood Reimagined, I talk to childfree pioneer, teacher and author, Marcia Drut-Davis.In this episode, Marcia and I talk about her appearance on US TV News show, 60 Minutes, and its aftermath, including how she lost her job as a highly sought-after substitute teacher; and the impact that not wanting children had on her mother-in-law.We also talk about Marcia's ‘daughter' and ‘grand-daughter' friends who are a big part of her life; her thoughts on when and how she realised she didn't want children; and the book ‘The Baby Trap' by Ellen Peck which had a profound effect on her life.Marcia and I also chat about her recent 80th birthday; how the incredible freedom of being childfree has been one of the greatest advantages of her life; and how many parents interpret the freedom of being childfree as ‘selfish'.Our conversation also encompasses the two documentaries, To Kid Or Not To Kid and My So-Called Selfish Life, that Marcia has been involved in; her experience of parents who have come to discover that the ‘fairytale' of having children could not be further from the truth; and how pro-natalism has much to answer for when it comes to societal expectations around having a family. Finally, we talk about the difference between identifying as ‘childfree' or ‘childless'; and the two books that she's written, ‘Confessions Of A Childfree Woman' and ‘What?! You Don't Want Children?'

In 1974, Marcia Drut-Davis appeared on TV news show 60 Minutes, explaining to her in-laws and the American public watching that she'd decided not to have children. The backlash was swift and severe: Marcia lost her job as a teacher, had her life threatened (and her dog's!) and faced judgment from pro-natalists and even some in the childfree community. For 46 years, she's been fighting to show the world, and childfree people ourselves, that we are valuable, that our choices are valid, and that can be as loving and nurturing as any mother. Childfree pioneer and author of February's Not The Mama Book Club selection, "Confessions of a Childfree Woman," Marcia Drut-Davis joins Auntie Julia to discuss her book and life. In 1974, in front of millions of 60 Minutes viewers, Marcia and her then husband confessed to his parents their desires to not have children. Facing death threats and job loss due to the backlash she experienced, Marcia built herself up to lead a successful life of educating and organizing. She has appeared in several childfree documentaries and organizes cruises to expand the non-parent community. We also talk about the state of the childfree movement today and what the future looks like. It's bright and joyful! Happy listening and be sure to follow Marcia!

We're spending today's episode of The Apple Seed with Shonaleigh, the torchbearer for the Drut'syla tradition: the oral passing down of a canon of some 4,000 traditional stories from woman to woman. We'll hear some great recordings of live performances made by the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, and we'll summarize a five-day storytelling workshop given to story enthusiasts right here in our backyard.
Shonaleigh is an internationally recognized storyteller in the Jewish Yiddish tradition of the Drut'syla--thousands of wisdom tales passed orally from grandmother to granddaughter. You'll laugh and you'll find a little wisdom yourself as she shares her stories and her faith.
