October is pregnancy and infant loss awareness month. In January 2020, the Duncan family experienced a loss that left them with a void in their life.  Their son Kaius was born still. Their world was shattered. Andrea searched for comfort and found hope in a support group on Facebook. It was also there that she learned about cuddle cots.  A cuddle cot is a cooling unit that preserves a stillborn baby's body so that parents can spend a few more hours with their lost newborn. To keep their son's memory alive, the Duncans started a fundraiser and were able to raise enough to purchase one cuddle cot for the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Duncan Roberts joined Tom on the Breakfast Show this morning to discuss the recent illegal annexation of Eastern Ukrainian territories by Russia. Last week saw Russia holding Referendum in four Ukrainian oblasts – Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson and declaring them Russian territory after what the international community has declared to be sham and rigged voting. In other developments, the Ukrainian counter offensive in the war saw them reclaiming the city of Lyman in Donetsk and claiming to have cleared it of all Russian forces. Today Tom and Duncan discussed the risks and likelihood of Vladimir Putin resorting to the use of Nuclear weapons in response to what he will now se as a Ukrainian attack on Russian territory, something which he has threatened on multiple occasions. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Monks of Magnitude, published by Duncan Sabien on February 18, 2022 on LessWrong. Sometimes I encounter a concept and it immediately embeds itself in my culture, such that it feels like I always knew it. This is a short description of such a concept; it was a near-perfect match for a way I already thought about things, and has since become a useful handle that I find myself explaining to others (so that I can subsequently reference it) roughly once a month. There is a certain story, which I will not name here in order to reduce the spoiler-y nature of the following description. In that story, there is a monastery, and the monastery is divided into tiers, or levels. (I may not be precisely representing the story, here, but rather how the thing in the story ended up being recorded by my brain.) Some monks are 1-day monks. They come out from their seclusion once a day, and mingle with the regular people, and share their insights, and make new observations, and then retreat back to their private spaces to muse and meditate. Some monks are 10-day monks. They are much like the 1-day monks, except they come out only every 10 days. The 10-day monks tend to think longer thoughts, and wrestle with subtler or more complex problems, than the 1-day monks. This is treated by the culture of the monastery as natural and correct. Of course the 10-day monks address a different set of problems; if 10-day monks and 1-day monks were good for the same purposes, the two different Orders wouldn't need to exist. There are also 100-day monks, who come out only a few times per year. There are also 1,000-day monks, who come out only every few years. There are also 10,000-day monks, who come out only every thirty years or so. There are also 100,000-day monks (the structure of this society has led them to be better at solving problems overall, which has allowed for some advances in longevity tech). "Come out" may be a bit of a misnomer; in fact, it is the case that the most valuable insights of a given Order tend to be fully comprehensible only to monks of one, mmmmaaaaybe two Orders below them. So the 100,000-day monks, when they report in, mostly speak only to the 10,000-day monks, who are responsible for distilling and transferring relevant insights to the 1,000-day monks, who are responsible for distilling and transferring relevant insights to the 100-day monks, etc. (It's also the case, as some readers have pointed out in the comments below, that certain problems cannot be solved by isolated thought alone, and require feedback loops or regular contact with the territory. For monks working on such problems, it is less that they sequester themselves completely for thousands of days at a time and more that, during those thousands of days, none can make demands of them.) Duncan-culture works this way. (By "Duncan-culture," I mean a culture composed entirely of Duncans; a culture made up of people who, whatever their other differences, take for granted everything that I, Duncan Sabien, find intuitively obvious and believe I could convey to a ten-year-old version of me in a few hours' time. This society lives on a large island a few hours' sailing off the coast of Dath Ilan.) If there were indeed 1,000 literal Duncan-copies available, to found a monastery or any other endeavor, they would immediately stratify themselves into 1, 10, 100, and 1,000-day groups at the very least, and probably there would be nonzero 10,000-day Duncans as well. The key here is that each of these strata focuses on a set of largely non-overlapping issues, with largely non-overlapping assumptions. To a 1-day or 10-day monk, questions like "maybe this is all a simulation, though" are almost entirely meaningless. They are fun to ponder at parties, but they aren't relevant to the actual working-out-of-how-things-work. 1-day a...

Governor of the State of Georgia, Geoff never expected to find himself in the national spotlight – or in the crosshairs of the President of the United States. Then the 2020 Election and its aftermath brought the nation's attention to Georgia. Amidst a hurricane of conspiracy and misinformation, Geoff spoke up for truth, conservative values, and the Republican Party he knows. His experiences inspired him to write the book GOP 2.0.A former professional baseball player and successful entrepreneur, Geoff was elected Georgia's Lieutenant Governor in November of 2018.Geoff graduated from Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta where he met his wife, Brooke. Geoff and Brooke both attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where Geoff was a scholarship pitcher. After a successful career at Georgia Tech, Geoff was drafted by the Florida Marlins' organization. Geoff spent six seasons playing baseball in the minor leagues, advancing as high as AAA before a shoulder injury forced his retirement in the early 2000s.After retiring from baseball, Geoff and his wife Brooke started a small marketing firm in their living room. The company experienced tremendous success which allowed Geoff and Brooke to sell the business and move on to multiple other entrepreneurial ventures. Geoff most recently served as the CEO of a health technology startup.Geoff's faith inspired him to a life of leadership and prompted his upstart run for political office. He was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 2012. During his time in office he authored several important pieces of legislation. Jesus tells us in Matthew 28 to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations...". This is called the Great Commission and it's probably the second most familiar scripture in the New Testament after, of course, John 3:16. But have you ever found yourself wondering what this means for you in your day-to-day life? Exactly how are we supposed to live this admonition out? After all, the apostles set a pretty high bar for service; and I can't help but feel, sometimes, I will never be able to meet their level of dedication. Thankfully, the Bible also tells us we are all gifted differently; and we can serve the Kingdom in countless different ways. So for some folks, that means being a missionary in a country halfway around the world from home. But for others of us, it means serving right where we've always been. My friends, Shirley and David Duncan, are prime examples of serving right where you are. And for the Duncans, that doesn't mean serving in their town or in their church. It means serving, quite literally, in their own home. Their story begins one hot afternoon in Middle Georgia. The Duncans live in a modest home in an average neighborhood in Macon, GA. David is handicapped, having lost both legs to complications from diabetes, so he is home most afternoons. On this particularly hot afternoon, a little neighborhood boy came by the house and asked David if he could have a cup of water. A lot of folks would have brushed the kid aside, but not David. He brought the boy a cup of water with crushed ice. It was just a small gesture of kindness. But that simple cup of ice water turned into a snack a few days later, then into snacks for another kid a few days after that and pretty soon...well, you know what happens when you feed kids and cats! Now, less than a year later, the school bus stops in front of their house and deposits over 20 neighborhood kids into their care EVERY DAY for after school snacks. Yes, you read correctly - they feed snacks to over 20 kids EVERY DAY! "Wow, that's great, but how is this a ministry, Jules?" I'm glad you asked! The Duncans have upped the ante. They are now serving a hot meal for supper on Friday nights, which they have affectionately dubbed, 'The Hot Dog Club'. However, they're not just providing a hot meal, they are also leading a Bible study for the kids and their families - many of whom have never heard the Gospel. It's like a Bible Block Party every week at their house. The Duncans also help these kids learn manners, respect for others, and the value of sharing and thinking of others. The kids are seeing up close and personal how virtual strangers are willing to show them kindness and love. In my interview with Shirley and David, they share how the Lord placed it on their hearts to help these kids. Most of them come from single parent homes and virtually all of them are low income. David shared with me that this ministry should not even be possible since they are approaching retirement age and are on a fixed income themselves. They never know from week to week if they are going to have the resources to support The Hot Dog Club. But somehow, they always do. People and resources just show up, quite literally, like manna from heaven. Through the generosity of people all over Macon, the Duncans are able to share the love of Jesus with folks right outside their door.
