Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by telling of continued pro-Palestine and anti-Israel protests in Philadelphia, noting that multiple police sources reported a ramping up of officers prior to a planned protest. This leads Dom into commentary about the Columbia University situation, relating it to Eastern High School, which postponed yesterday a protest that was deemed anti-Semitic even by elected officials. Then, Dom welcomes in Steven Bilski, CEO/Principal of the Memphis Street Academy, onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss why his school is close to closing due to outside forces, with the placement of their school right in the epicenter of Kensington, which has become the drug capitol of the east coast. Bilski reveals the horrific environment that has been forced upon his students, expressing what they pass when they walk to school and what faculty has to fight against concerning external forces including drug culture and violence. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom continues the Dom Giordano Program with analysis of both local and national issues. First, Dom provides updates on the situation over at Eastern High School in Voorhees where students planned an anti-Israel protest that has since been canceled. Then, Dom turns to national issues, playing back a clip from a union leader who compares Biden's economic reform to the GI bill for his union members. Then, Dom welcomes Camden County Commissioner Jeffrey L. Nash back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss why he chose to speak out when he heard of a Voorhees School District-supported pro-Palestine protest that he considers anti-Semitic. Giordano, while he agrees, takes the stance of devil's advocate in asking Nash to justify why this is not solely an expression of the First Amendment. Nash tells of the hateful rhetoric in these anti-Israel protests, noting the way Jewish students feel when seeing other students express such a stance.(Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

In this episode, former high school Math teacher Kareem Farah talks about how an innovative Blended Learning model that started at Eastern High School in Washington, D.C. has now turned into The Modern Classrooms Project (MCP), a non-profit organization that is leading a movement of educators in implementing a self-paced, mastery-based instructional model that meets the needs of every student. This three-tiered approach includes Blended Learning principles with teacher-created videos, a self-paced learning environment and a mastery-based grading system that collectively eliminates the traditional one-size-fits-all classroom. Twitter: @KareemFarah23. Website: ModernClassrooms.org. Meet Kareem Farah Kareem Farah taught high school math in Hawaii and Washington, DC, for six years. He earned his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis and later received a master's degree in secondary education at Johns Hopkins University. Farah was awarded the 2018 DC Public Schools Award for Classroom Innovation. Instead of using a traditional lecture model, Farah taught mathematics through a blended model where students accessed content through his self-made videos. The cornerstone of his classroom was the ability for students to work through the content at their own pace and Farah's ability to employ mastery-based grading to evaluate student learning. In an effort to scale his classroom model, Farah co-founded a nonprofit, The Modern Classrooms Project. As the CEO of The Modern Classrooms Project, Farah and his team train and support teachers who seek to redesign their classroom to better support the unique needs of their students, particularly in our most underserved communities. Our guest this week, Emily McKeehan, left a job in the insurance industry to follow her dream of becoming a high school English teacher because she felt that was what she has been called to do. When she saw a Facebook article about how therapy dogs can help young elementary students with their reading, she had the crazy idea of trying them with her students at Eastern High School, which is in eastern Jefferson county outside Louisville. What she hoped for was to build confidence in her reluctant freshman readers, but what she got was so much more. Emily talks to us about some books that are reliable favorites of her students year after year, what kind of students she feels get the most from working with a reading therapy dog, and what TV show was her bridge to loving the true crime genre. Eastern High School's principal apologized and the school has changed its policies after girls were turned away from their homecoming dance for violating dress code this fall. Their dresses were measured before some girls were told they cannot enter the dance, sparking controversy from parents and students who alleged such rules are sexist. And Jefferson County Public School data shows that in schools without dress codes, where rules can be applied more subjectively, girls are cited more often for dress code violations than boys. Georgina Saunders was mentioned in one of the regular slots back in season 1, and now gets the chance to appear in person to tell us about how she pulled off the impressive feat of being the student teacher who took forty pupils to the Hay Festival to develop their love for all things to do with reading. She's joined by Eastern High's librarian, James Emery, who was a vital part of the team who brought it all together. They've got plenty of tips for anyone who can see the value for pupils of putting on something like this, but can't imagine how they'd survive the experience! For good measure, we've got two wonderful pupil guests who went on the trip, who tell us about everything from LGBTQIA+ literature to gothic fiction, the joys of tidying the library and the lovely smell of new books. It was very interesting because he would bring me home the Congressional Record in addition to the six books a week that I had to read. But in the Congressional Record, he would show me a speech given by a Senator and then say he'd written the speech. Then he would show me in the same Congressional Record another speech on the opposite side of the same subject given by another Senator and he had written that speech too. We won the State Championship in everything but chess and that's, we didn't win in chess because we didn't have a chess team. Andy Ockershausen: Let me tell you, when I grew up it was just Blair High School. Montgomery was added later. I can tell you that. Robin Ficker: Yes. Andy Ockershausen: So that let you know it was in Montgomery county of course. Robin Ficker: They built that new gym right there on Wayne Avenue and they'd leave the very top window open and we'd climb up and get in there and play basketball. Andy Ockershausen: Many times I did that at Eastern High School in Washington, going in the top, getting into school and getting down the steps. But Robin, you grew up in suburban Maryland. You're really close to our city, our town. But you left our town to go to college for a while, did you not? U.S. Military Academy, Vietnam and Tragic Loss Robin Ficker: Yes, I went to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I was the second youngest in my class there and I remember thinking, wow, we're gonna get a lot to eat when we're there in the Army. And for our first meal we had to sit up attention and cut our peas, each one into four pieces. And I left that lunch quite hungry because I hadn't eaten breakfast in anticipation of having a big lunch. Andy Ockershausen: Robin, they do things differently at the Academy, both of them.

'Mr. Basketball', Michigan State star, NBA champion and Global Coach, Sam Vincent. As a youngster, Sam Vincent witnessed intense, cross-town high-school basketball battles between his older brother, Jay Vincent, and Magic Johnson. A few years later, Jay and Earvin joined forces at Michigan State University, winning the 1979 National Championship against Larry Bird - Sam's future teammate in the NBA. Sam led Eastern High School to the 1980 State Championship. He was named (1981) Michigan's first 'Mr. Basketball'. Following in the footsteps of (his brother) Jay and Magic, Sam Vincent attended Michigan State and would be a four-year standout with the Spartans. He played in the 1981 McDonald's High School All-American game against Michael Jordan. Little did he know then, however, Sam and Jordan's lives would be linked forever. As a rookie, Sam was a member of the 1986 Boston Celtics - arguably, the greatest team to have ever played the game. We discuss his memories of that season and some of the practice battles the team undertook at Hellenic College. Prior to the 1988 season, Sam was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he played 43 games. As the trade deadline neared, the Sonics dealt Sam to the Chicago Bulls - where he'd reunite with Michael Jordan - and his on-court production increased significantly. We talk about some of his fondest off-court memories from that time, plus some great games he played in as a member of the Bulls. In mid-June of 1989, the Orlando Magic selected Sam in the NBA Expansion Draft. He was an original member of the franchise and played with the team for three seasons. Injury led to Sam's exit from the NBA after the 1992 season. He played for a season in Europe, before embarking on a post-playing career - overseas and within the USA - that is as varied as it is impressive. Sam details his extensive travels and successes as a Global Coach. The breadth of his accomplishments is remarkable. Among many achievements, Sam has coached national teams in South Africa and Nigeria. He guided the Mobile Revelers to the 2003 NBA D-League Championship. In 2004, he coached the Nigerian women's team in the Olympics Games. In 2007, Sam was an assistant coach with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, before getting a call from Michael Jordan to coach the Charlotte Bobcats. Sam talks about his most-recent coaching experiences, clears up misconceptions stemming from his exit as Charlotte coach and discusses his love for promoting the game of basketball globally. A wide-ranging conversation that I am sure you'll enjoy. Links discussed (include): * Sam and Charles Oakley join MJ on a trip to the Nike factory (1988) * Sam's amazing alley-oop to Jordan - Bulls @ Knicks (1988) * Sam is introduced as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats (2007) People mentioned in this episode, include: Charles Oakley, Doug Collins, Phil Jackson, Isiah Thomas, Kevin Willis, Scott Skiles, Avery Johnson, Bernie Bickerstaff, Sedale Threatt, Terence Stansbury, Mfon Udoka, Alex English, Xavier McDaniel, Dirk Nowitzki & Tiny Archibald. Charles Allen on one solution to close achievement gap in Our Town~ " 'Books From Birth,' . . . delivers a book to every kid in the city, five and under, once a month for free. For a lot of . . .kids in the city, you don't see any books. There's not a book in the home. . . and what was important to us though, is as we figure out which books these are, we've put more than 400,000 books into homes across the District in the last two years." Charles Allen - Councilmember DC Ward 6 and Andy Ockershausen in studio interview Andy Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen, and this is Our Town, and I have a great guest to talk to today. A man I met for the first time. I really didn't meet him in person, but he made a presentation at a Southwest BID, a breakfast, a luncheon at Arena Stage, and I was so impressed with his presentation and what he is. He is chairman of the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety. He's made so much for our city and Our Town, and his commitment has been great. He has overseen the building of Washington in so many ways, and we're delighted to have Councilman Charles Allen on Our Town. Charles, welcome. Charles Allen: Thanks, Andy. Thanks for having me. Thanks for having me. I appreciate it. Andy Ockershausen: Our podcast is heard around the world, I hope you know that. Seriously, we have people that listen to us all over the country that used to live here and they moved, and they shouldn't have. But Charles, what you have overseen, incidentally, in reading your resume, you live at 15th and D. Charles Allen: I do. Andy Ockershausen: I grew up at 13th and D. Charles Allen: Did you really? Andy Ockershausen: My neighbor, I'm a Northeast guy from way, way back, Eastern High School, Elliot, the whole thing. That Kingsman School, and what's happened in your, that's your ward now, correct? Charles Allen: That is. That is, absolutely. You should come by and visit the old 'hood. Andy Ockershausen: There used to be a Car Barn there, you know, and- Charles Allen: Still there. Andy Ockershausen: Is it still? Charles Allen: It's now housing. Andy Ockershausen: Street cars, and it was such- Charles Allen: Now it's all- Andy Ockershausen: ... a wonderful . . . Charles Allen: ... apartments and condos, but yeah. Speaker 4: Yeah. Huh. Andy Ockershausen: Walking to school to Elliott and Easton and ... I'm glad to see 15th and D is still on a map. You and Olive, the dog. Charles Allen: That's right, and then, of course, Jordi, my wife, and our two kids, Cora Neal and Everett. And our sweet Olive. Andy Ockershausen: But you're not a Washingtonian, but you're a Washingtonian by choice. I think Janice and I are Washingtonians by choice too, because we've both moved out and did other things, but we came back to Our Town, and you went to the university in Alabama. From Birmingham, Alabama to Virginia's Washington and Lee University to Our Town, Affordable Healthcare Issues and Ward 6 Charles Allen: I grew up in, I was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Andy Ockershausen: Oh, Birmingham, right. Charles Allen: That's right. And went up to school, went to college in Virginia, went back to Alabama for a- ... Master's degree. Yes. Went, got a Master's degree in Public Health and then, luckily, got a post grad fellowship up here in DC. I knew this is where I wanted to be. Started working for the federal government, for HHS, for a little bit. Quickly realized I did not like the federal government, but had fallen in love with DC. And I knew that's where, that was going to be home, and so I switched up, started working for a local nonprofit doing healthcare work. Actually, this was a time when DC General was closing. We were kind of converting to The Alliance, trying to help figure out how to take care of our uninsured and low-income residents. So I- Andy Ockershausen: DC General was in your ward? Charles Allen: At the time, DC General was. DC General is now in Ward Seven. Andy Ockershausen: Yes,

"JB" James Brown on one of the most important lessons he learned from being cut by the Atlanta Hawks ~ ". . .when I looked back on it, there's a verse in the Bible that says, "Why be concerned about the speck in your brother's eye when there's a plank in your own eye?" And if you point a finger and blame at somebody, there are three pointing right back at you. It was on me. I didn't work as hard as them, and I vowed in the game of life I would never let an opportunity pass me by, that I didn't work hard to capitalize on the opportunity." "JB" James Brown (right) Sportscaster and Special Correspondent with Andy Ockershausen (left) A Ockershausen: This is Andy Ockershausen. This is Our Town and I have a distinct pleasure to introduce our next guest. My wife feels that he is tall, dark and handsome. We know about the dark. And he is talented and he is homegrown right here in Our Town. There are certain people in this world that I grew up with and you could say their name like Sonny, like Tiger. You know who they're talking about. Frank, the Singer and then there's JB. There's only one JB in my life and I've been around a long time. JB graduated from Harvard. I want to find out how he get in Harvard. You worked at Xerox. I didn't know you work for Eastman Kodak, a two great American corporation. He got his start in broadcasting right here in Washington D.C. Bullets. He had the best job at sports hosting NFL Today, Thursday Night Football, NFL Pre-game, this network CBS and Fox. He was a standout on the basketball court as well as on the TV set and that's a great line. My friend, James Brown. "JB" James Brown: Andy. A Ockershausen: JB. "JB" James Brown: Since your wife has accurately described me as being dark as well, too dark to blush as I listened to all of that, but- A Ockershausen: But you're handsome, JB especially the beard. "JB" James Brown: Oh, please. Are you kidding me? Hey, my grand kids must have told you to say that. So right ... And I've got four of them now, but I will get to that point. A Ockershausen: Wow. "JB" James Brown: Yes. A Ockershausen: But your family is from Washington. "JB" James Brown: Native Washingtonians. A Ockershausen: Your Mom and Dad were born here. They grew up here? The Early Years - Education and Sports "JB" James Brown: Dad grew up in Georgetown. A Ockershausen: Wow. "JB" James Brown: Was very good, knew Petey Greene. Of course we know that venerable name in Washington Circles. So Petey Greene was the one who actually got me involved in television. A Ockershausen: Is that right? "JB" James Brown: And I'll get to that. Mom actually was born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and went to Chicago and then came to Washington were she and my dad met. Hey, Andy, talk about dusting off cobwebs, I looked at my birth certificate which of course had me described back in the day as they did "Colored" and I was born at Gallagher Hospital and didn't even know- A Ockershausen: Gallinger. "JB" James Brown: Gallinger. Thank you. Thank you very much. Gallinger. Was that the forerunner to the Women's Hospital? A Ockershausen: D.C. Jail. You know where the jail is? Gallinger was over there. "JB" James Brown: I'm sorry I asked you about that. I'm sorry I asked you about that. Janice Ockershausen: That's his neighborhood. A Ockershausen: JB, Eastern High School and the D.C. Jail and Gallinger all together. "JB" James Brown: Somehow I know I can't ask to this part of the conversation to be cut out but . . . Janice Ockershausen: JB, that was Andy's neighborhood.
