Break 2: TOM WAGES   ***STRIPERS REPORT***   STORY 4: Georgia Sees 10.5% Growth in Total Housing Units Over the Past Decade The United States grapples with a critical affordable housing shortage, underscored by a shortfall of millions of units. This predicament stems from a complex web of factors, including stringent regulations, escalating construction costs, and the enduring aftermath of the Great Recession. While regions like the Mountain West and Sun Belt have witnessed notable housing developments, areas such as West Virginia and parts of the Great Lakes region have experienced stagnation or negligible growth. Moreover, the pace of housing development does not always match up with demographic trends, posing affordability issues in certain locales. In Georgia, for instance, the number of housing units rose by 10.5% between 2012 and 2022, marginally exceeding population growth. However, this period also saw median home prices skyrocket by 157.7%. Tackling the housing shortage demands a multifaceted approach, focusing on policy reform, increased construction activity, and bolstering affordable housing initiatives. STORY 5: PrizePicks to locate new headquarters in Atlanta Governor Brian Kemp has officially announced that PrizePicks will establish its new headquarters in Atlanta, marking a significant $25 million investment and promising the creation of 1,000 jobs within the next seven years. Esteemed as a leading figure among North America's rapidly growing sports companies, PrizePicks has been lauded for its innovative approach and excellence in workplace culture. The new headquarters, occupying 33,000 square feet in the Star Metals Building at Midtown Atlanta, signifies a major boost to the city's innovation ecosystem. This strategic move underscores Georgia's burgeoning reputation as a technology and innovation hub, supported by a skilled workforce and robust infrastructure. The expansion of PrizePicks is poised to make a considerable economic contribution to Atlanta, reflecting the state's dedication to promoting technological innovation and employment opportunities.   We'll be back in a moment.   Break 3: CURIOSITY LAB BIKE RACE   And now here is your Guide mental health minute. ***GUIDE MENTAL HEALTH MINUTE*** STORY 6: GA to distribute $638M settlement through grant program to combat deadly opioid epidemic Georgia is set to launch a grant program to allocate $638 million received from opioid settlement funds, dedicating $479 million to grants and distributing the remaining $159 million among Atlanta and its major counties. The grant application process begins next Monday, accompanied by workshops designed to guide applicants through the submission procedure. The state's strategy emphasizes a meticulous and impactful response to the opioid epidemic, prioritizing areas such as medication-assisted treatment, prevention initiatives, and recovery support services. Sheriff Gary Sisk has underscored the critical nature of the drug crisis and the imperative for a sincere commitment to recovery efforts. This program advocates for transparency and seeks to integrate insights from those with firsthand experience of addiction, underlining the value of their perspectives in the fight against substance abuse. STORY 7: Virtual reality sessions could help cancer patients lessen pain: study A recent study published by the American Cancer Society reveals that ten-minute sessions of virtual reality therapy can significantly alleviate pain in cancer patients, with effects persisting beyond the duration of the session. This innovative approach has demonstrated superior efficacy in pain reduction compared to traditional distraction methods, such as using an iPad. The research involved 128 adult cancer patients suffering from moderate to severe pain, who were randomly assigned to either VR or iPad therapy sessions. Findings highlighted a more pronounced decrease in pain levels among participants in the VR group, with the relief extending up to 24 hours post-session. The study advocates for further investigation into the application of VR therapy across various outpatient contexts and for different manifestations of cancer-related pain, underscoring its potential as a non-pharmacological option for managing discomfort in cancer patients.   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: INGLES 4 Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post podcast. Shaylyn Romney Garrett -- From I to We: Building a Nation of Neighbours

Awakin Call

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2023

The thread binding together Shaylyn Romney Garrett's perhaps unorthodox career path - spanning diverse fields of research, writing, activism and social entrepreneurship - is community. "I've studied it, experimented with it, been fascinated by it, and been frightened by it," she says, adding poignantly, "I often feel that community is something I have thought more about than almost anyone but have less of than almost everyone." After a profound 3-year personal healing journey, Shaylyn experienced the wisdom in the old adage "If you want to go far, go together." In 2019, she decided to spend a year engaging in a series of radically simple but transformative monthly challenges to shift from "I" to "We" - 15-minute connections, meeting her neighbours and hosting dinner parties - giving birth to Project Reconnect. When suicide rates, bullying, loneliness and polarization are on the rise, Shaylyn believes that such everyday interactions are where we do the "heart work" required to transform our hyper-individualistic culture and reclaim the power of "We." Shaylyn is a co-author along with best-selling author Robert D. Putnam of The Upswing: How America Came Together A Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again, which has been acclaimed "a magnificent and visionary book," and "a must-read for those who wonder how we can reclaim our nation's promise" to once more turn the tide from "I" to "We". Her writing also includes uniquely revealing portraits of religious communities across the United States in American Grace: How Religion Divides and Unites Us, which won Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson Award for best political science book of 2010-11. Her thoughtful opinions, writing, and research have been featured in numerous outlets including TIME Magazine, The New York Times, National Public Radio, BBC Radio, and the PBS Newshour. She is also the founder of Project Reconnect and a founding contributor to David Brook's Weave: The Social Fabric Project, an Aspen Institute initiative. Formerly, along with her husband, she co-founded Think Unlimited, a nonprofit in Jordan that helped thousands of young Arabs find their voice and their place as changemakers in their countries and the world. It won multiple international awards while also partnering with the Queen of Jordan. Shaylyn holds a BA magna cum laude in Government from Harvard University, and is a returned Peace Corps volunteer. She’s also a certified Holistic Health Coach, as well as a permaculturalist who loves to get her hands in the dirt, and thinks a lot about healthy soils as a metaphor for healthy human communities. She now lives in Southern New Hampshire with her husband James Garrett, their daughter Sophie and son Aeon, and their loyal dog Dewey (named for John Dewey, one of her favorite Progressives!) Join Shayna Parekh and David Bonbright for a conversation with this remarkable author, planting seeds for a new story of "we" in the garden of her own life and that of others.

It's an Ozark county populated by people who declared their independence from the state in 1961. In short, they're not people you want to mess with. If only a would-be burglar knew a little more about McDonald County before he let himself into a local home last week. Two homeowners came home at about 9:30pm to find 62-year-old James Garrett skulking around their Tiff City house. Both were armed when the intruder took a shot at them. They then returned fire and both hit their target. (Click Here for Full Article)   FROM studentofthegun.com: Thanks to the combined efforts of Hernando Cortez and Sir Walter Raleigh, hogs have been native to the United States of America for over four hundred years now. Those who make a living selling ham and bacon are grateful for that fact. However, those whose crops and fields are devastated by feral hogs, not so much.  The southern and central US has become the perfect breeding ground for feral pigs with Texas holding the distinctive title of high wild hog population. When I started hunting hogs in the Lone Star State, around 2010, the Texas hog population was pushing 2 million. Today, that number is pushing 3 million with an estimated 6 million plus spread out across various states. For those wishing to hone their skills in the field with a rifle, Texas is definitely the land of opportunity. Feral hog season is open all year long, day or night.   (Click Here for Full Article)

How to Maximize Productivity, Creativity & Joy - Part 2 Do you feel that you're smarter now than as a youngster in your 20s? You probably are! This is because of neuroplasticity of the brain. We can, in fact, become smarter, happier and more successful even later in life. Adiel Gorel discusses this with James Garrett, founder of Brain by Design and Think Unlimited. Join us to know about the psychology of success, and be inspired to actually change your brain!   Key Insights:   James Garrett has studied the science of neuroplasticity and created evidence based tools to actually rewire the brain to maximize productivity, creativity and joy.   Our experiences can change the biology of the brain. Similarly, it is possible to change and rewire the brain by changing behaviors and habits to become smarter and more successful.   Fear is the emotion that holds us back from a lot of things. However, the fear of rejection and social judgment can be unlearned, and the emotion of fear is something that is re-writeable.   It is possible to train the brain to dwell more on the positive than on the negative. It is a choice we can make, and change the way we fundamentally react to people and situations.   We can be happy by design. Self-motivation is a learnable skill where we overcome inertia and are able to achieve the goals we set for ourselves.   Author, Investment Expert and Wellness Advocate Adiel Gorel isn't just an expert in his chosen fields but also a storyteller who makes complex issues easily accessible. During his childhood in St. Paul, James fell in love with buildings and the bustle of urban landscapes. Later, while in college, he would discover that he himself had a connection to these landscapes through a man who helped create them, Clarence Wigington, the first Black municipal architect in the country, serving St. Paul from 1915 to 1949. In this episode of the MinneCulture Podcast, reporter Katie Thornton speaks with James Garrett Jr. about his life, his passion for architecture and how community-driven design can be a type of activism.

Your brain has its own logic that doesn’t come with a user’s manual. It’s a system you have to figure out on your own. But when you start to unravel the mystery and dive in, you’ll discover a whole new you. A you that’s fully connected from your brain to your heart--one that’s more present in every moment and open to different possibilities. Lucky for you, brain coach and brain-hacker, James Garrett, is here to share how to tap into your neuroplasticity to make some real internal change.     James is the founder of Brain By Design and lead adventurer behind the Deep Change Project. He’s spoken on stages ranging from Harvard to TEDx and The New York Times, while Fast Company and Harvard Business Review have featured his work. James spent years doing research with some of the best psychologists in the world at Columbia, Tufts, and Yale. With this unique combination of roles as a scientist, trainer, and entrepreneur, in 2019 James launched the Deep Change Project which is a year-long personal journey to discover what's possible at the outer edges of brain hacking and neuroplasticity.  Discover the true potential of the human brain--listen in! Key Takeaways: Your long game. There’s a myth that we only use 10% of our brains. Neuroplasticity defies that myth and says your true potential uses all of your brain and unfolds over time. And if you’re looking for real, deep change in your life, know THIS first . . . [09:44]. Your learned skill. You’re in the middle of making a big change--like quitting a job because you know in your heart there’s something else out there--then, you start to doubt yourself. Slowly you have this sense like you’re headed down the wrong road. HERE’S what your inner voice is really trying to tell you . . . [20:43]. Your internal escape. James says, “Anxiety is future-oriented, fear is present-oriented.” Which are you more concerned with–the future or the present? What if there was a way to harness this impediment in order to fully evolve? The SECRET to your personal progress is . . . [33:25].  Your Deep Change Project. This is it. You’re ready to start the next version of yourself that consists of new habits, new perspectives, and living a life that allows you to embrace anything and everything that’s thrown your way. Your “change lab,” awaits HERE . . . [44:46]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality. The research is clear—the brain’s obsessed with safety and survival. What’s most interesting is our brains are more concerned with what we do rather than who we are . . . but what does it all mean? Listen in as brain coach, James Garrett, shares more revelations and insight from his wealth of experience and travel. James is the Founder and CEO of Brain by Design. As a brain hacker, he has spoken on stages ranging from Harvard to TEDx and his work has been featured in The New York Times, FastCompany, Harvard Business Review, as well as many others. James spent years doing research with some of the best psychologists in the world at Columbia as well as Yale. He's a content creator at Course Builder; his course on the science of coaching has been rated one of the best courses for coaches and is currently certified by the International Coach Federation for continuing coach education credits. James also built one of the only brain-based positive psychology curriculum in the Middle East and trained thousands of Arab youth in partnership with Queen Rania of Jordan. Discover what’s possible with a little brain hacking and an enlightening introduction to neuroplasticity. Kay takeaways: Brain recognition. Ever meet someone new and you’re instantly convinced of who they are? In 10 minutes you’ve stereotyped their personality and, turns out, there’s science behind it all. Change your initial behavior and unlock major opportunities by knowing THIS . . . [09:51]. Brain focus. Bringing on little change is doable, step by step, but what about shifting master habits? The BIG changes you seek and deeply care about? The best research says to try this ONE thing to get you going . . . [18:20]. Brain tricks. You have bad habits. You have good habits. For James, he has a habit of craving chocolate at 10 PM nightly. Whether it’s a good/bad thing, your brain doesn’t care as long as what you do is routine. HERE’s why and how to make changes . . . [26:03] Brain breakdown. So many of us are living in a state of being overworked and overstressed. The symptoms include irritability, inability to focus, and constant need for distraction—sound familiar? The WHY behind how it starts and the reason to slam on the brakes . . . [35:57]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. You're never more than One Idea Away from a whole, new reality. Thank you to our partners at iPEC Coaching! He spent years doing research with some of the best psychologists in the world at Columbia, Tufts, and Yale. A rare combination of scientist, trainer, and entrepreneur, in 2019 James launched the Deep Change Project, a year-long personal journey to discover what’s possible at the outer edges of brainhacking and neuroplasticity. In today’s conversation with us, James explains how the brain works and the capacity to which we can redesign our brain. We explore the way peak athletes train, rest, and the difference between gold medalists and those who do not place on the podium. James also shares some of his personal discoveries over the past several months during his Deep Change Project; including how he has been able to avoid goal-drift, increase focus, connection, and experience greater joy. Self-directed neuroplasticity is like the meta skill set of the future. If you can get good at rewiring your brain, you can get good at anything. Listen as James Garrett explains how. Key Takeaways You have the capacity to be your own neural-architect. Brains change well into old age. Attention unlocks neuroplasticity. The difference between gold medalists and those who don’t place on the podium is not in how they train but in how they rest. Your brain can only focus for 90 minutes. You want to start managing energy instead of time. Habits take 66 days to form in your brain. The Deep Change Project involves habit stacking – developing 3 new habits every 2 months. Procrastination is an emotional problem – it’s an emotional resistance to a hard thing. Brains are energy scrooges. You need to negotiate with your brain that it’s worth the energy spend. One of the ways to do that is to shrink the size of the task you’re doing. Free Gift & Resources Master Your Habits Course (normally $200, receive for free) Text ‘brain’ to 44144. I have been talking to several clients recently about productivity, attention, focus, our expectations of ourselves and the feelings that come along with juggling all of the things - work, parenting, health, self-care, friendships, family, goals and plans. Worry, overwhelm, frustration and impatience are recurring themes. So I thought it timely to revisit a conversation that has helped me with all of these things. In Season 2 of the Potential Psychology Podcast I interviewed James Garrett, the founder and CEO of Brain By Design - a US-based organisation that teaches strategies for getting more from your mind. About JamesJames is a psychologist, a former academic, co-founder of a highly successful social venture and now host of The Deep Change Podcast.
