Today we go back to January 18, 1986 for the first game played inside the newly-constructed Dean Smith Student Activity Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Opening a new arena 18 games into the season seems odd but having an undefeated matchup between Duke and UNC made this a game every fan wanted to be in attendance for. This might not be a game everyone talks about in this series but it had a lot going for it, including Dean Smith vs Coach K, Johnny Dawkins and Kenny Smith, and another tight rivalry game. Here's some of what we will get into: Early ESPN College Basketball coverage with Alan Massengale anchoring in studio. College starts Tito Horford and Scott Skiles in the news. Manual scoreboards Johnny Dawkins living up to the hype he still gets to this day from Duke fans. Jay Bilas as a 6th man for the Blue Devils. The legend of Steve Hale and an unexpected journey post basketball. Go back and watch the game for yourself here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnM9R3DhAWA

The Final Four Is Not On The Schedule - A Michigan State Basketball Podcast.
Rod & Eric hop into the way back machine and talk about another What If scenario. This time, the 1985-86 Spartans whose season came to an end after a clock malfunction at the NCAA tournament in 1986. This was Scott Skiles' senior year which was one of the most prolific single season performances in MSU history. With MSU up 4 late in the second half, the clock at Kemper Arena in Kansas City suddenly got 'stuck' for 15 seconds. Michigan State eventually missed some late free throws and #1 seed Kansas ending up tying the game with 9 seconds left and forcing overtime where they won by 10. Amazingly, the clock issue was never fixed during stoppage of the game. If the clock didn't break, would MSU have won? Could they have defeated North Carolina State in the regional finals to advance to the Final Four? If so, could they have beaten a young Coach K at Duke and perhaps Louisville in the Championship game? *Warning: some serious Michigan shade is thrown in this episode. A two-time All-Big 10 Conference selection, which included first-team honors his senior year, Crispin captained the 2001 Nittany Lions as they went 21-12 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. As an All-State player at Pitman High School, Joe scored 2,654 points. 'Mr. Basketball', Michigan State star, NBA champion and Global Coach, Sam Vincent. As a youngster, Sam Vincent witnessed intense, cross-town high-school basketball battles between his older brother, Jay Vincent, and Magic Johnson. A few years later, Jay and Earvin joined forces at Michigan State University, winning the 1979 National Championship against Larry Bird - Sam's future teammate in the NBA. Sam led Eastern High School to the 1980 State Championship. He was named (1981) Michigan's first 'Mr. Basketball'. Following in the footsteps of (his brother) Jay and Magic, Sam Vincent attended Michigan State and would be a four-year standout with the Spartans. He played in the 1981 McDonald's High School All-American game against Michael Jordan. Little did he know then, however, Sam and Jordan's lives would be linked forever. As a rookie, Sam was a member of the 1986 Boston Celtics - arguably, the greatest team to have ever played the game. We discuss his memories of that season and some of the practice battles the team undertook at Hellenic College. Prior to the 1988 season, Sam was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics, where he played 43 games. As the trade deadline neared, the Sonics dealt Sam to the Chicago Bulls - where he'd reunite with Michael Jordan - and his on-court production increased significantly. We talk about some of his fondest off-court memories from that time, plus some great games he played in as a member of the Bulls. In mid-June of 1989, the Orlando Magic selected Sam in the NBA Expansion Draft. He was an original member of the franchise and played with the team for three seasons. Injury led to Sam's exit from the NBA after the 1992 season. He played for a season in Europe, before embarking on a post-playing career - overseas and within the USA - that is as varied as it is impressive. Sam details his extensive travels and successes as a Global Coach. The breadth of his accomplishments is remarkable. Among many achievements, Sam has coached national teams in South Africa and Nigeria. He guided the Mobile Revelers to the 2003 NBA D-League Championship. In 2004, he coached the Nigerian women's team in the Olympics Games. In 2007, Sam was an assistant coach with the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, before getting a call from Michael Jordan to coach the Charlotte Bobcats. Sam talks about his most-recent coaching experiences, clears up misconceptions stemming from his exit as Charlotte coach and discusses his love for promoting the game of basketball globally. A wide-ranging conversation that I am sure you'll enjoy. Links discussed (include): * Sam and Charles Oakley join MJ on a trip to the Nike factory (1988) * Sam's amazing alley-oop to Jordan - Bulls @ Knicks (1988) * Sam is introduced as coach of the Charlotte Bobcats (2007) People mentioned in this episode, include: Charles Oakley, Doug Collins, Phil Jackson, Isiah Thomas, Kevin Willis, Scott Skiles, Avery Johnson, Bernie Bickerstaff, Sedale Threatt, Terence Stansbury, Mfon Udoka, Alex English, Xavier McDaniel, Dirk Nowitzki & Tiny Archibald.

We have our first trade deadline deal -- almost exactly 72 hours before Thursday's NBA trade deadline.Just months after signing a max contract extension with the Orlando Magic, Tobias Harris is being dealt to the Detroit Pistons for point guard Brandon Jennings and stretch forward Ersan Ilyasova. The news was broken by our own Michael Scotto -- not a bad scoop for that young man.The deal appears to be a coup for Pistons coach/general manager Stan Van Gundy, who is acquiring one of the league's top young talents in exchange for a backup point guard (though in truth, Jennings would be a starter if not for Detroit's acquisition of Reggie Jackson at the deadline a year ago) and a stretch 4 who is in the middle tier, at best, of the NBA's stretch 4s.Harris has been averaging 13.7 points and 7.0 rebounds for the Magic while shooting 46 percent from the field, with his scoring total off significantly from the 17.1 points he averaged last season -- his third with the Magic after being acquired from Milwaukee in a deal for J.J. Redick that was considered one of the best ever made by Magic general manager Rob Hennigan. His 3-point percentage of .311 is down from last year's number of .364.With Detroit, he will likely start on the front line that also includes Andre Drummond, who leads the NBAs in double-doubles, and Marcus MorrisJennings will presumably take over the starting point guard spot from Elfrid Payton as Scott Skiles tries to make a playoff push with a team that started the season strongly but has slumped badly since they were 19-13 at the start of 2016, losing 16 of 20 to drop to 11th place in the Eastern Conference, 3 1/2 games behind the Charlotte Hornets. Here is Scotto discussing the deal on SiriusXM Radio with hosts Mateen Cleaves and Jared Greenberg.

After a promising 19-13 start under new head coach Scott Skiles, the Orlando Magic have fallen on very hard times this calendar year, dropping 11 of 12 contests. A stagnant offense has especially plagued this incredibly young team. Amid such horrible January struggles, Zach Oliver of SB Nation’s Orlando Pinstriped Post drops by to help explain the Magic’s current woes as well as to provide insight on the team’s wealth of young talent.Learn more about your ad choices. Hosted by Earnest â??EJ Christian and Gee Steelio Guests: Lang Greene (Basketball Insiders), Antwan Staley (NGSC Sports) *The NBA Finals is set albeit a whole week from now.. Gee has no interest in the Finals. EJ is annoyed by the LeBron James/Michael Jordan comparisons and doesnâ??t find it interesting. EJ thinks he's the same guy as he was in Miami. Difference is the people love the narrative of him being back in Cleveland. *THE HOT FIVE: Tom Thibadeau, Jeff Van Gundy, Scott Skiles, Kevin Love, Dwyane Wade *EJ and Gee react to Adrian Petersonâ??s recent twitter tirade about how players arenâ??t treated fairly by their employers. EJ thinks that while AP has an argument, he is the wrong guy to be the poster child for fairness given his recent legal issues while Gee thinks Peterson has been given anything he wants since he was a teenager which has affected his self awareness. *Lang Greene of Basketball Insiders joins the show to discuss all the recent NBA news surrounding Scott Skiles, Tom Thibadeau, Dwayne Wade and his prediction on the NBA Finals. *EJ and Gee discuss the Ray McDonald story. Gee reveals he doesnâ??t like Peter King. Can the Denver Broncos survive without OT Ryan Clady next season? EJ thinks theyâ??ll be fine since this very thing happened in 2013 when they won the AFC Title while Gee thinks this is a precursor of things to come for Denver. *Antwan Staley of NGSC Sports joins to break down both Game 7â??s in the NHL and more. The boys go into the weekend with their shoutouts on a shortened show
