"They ought to be ashamed of themselves" - a conversation with Shawn Myszka and Tyler Yearby

In this special New Year's Eve episode, I welcomed back Shawn Myszka and Tyler Yearby from Emergence to discuss a recent academic paper criticising ecological dynamics and many of researchers and practitioners working in the space. The article is called "Ecological Dynamics as an Accurate and Parsimonious Contributor to Applied Practice: A Critical Appraisal" by Dave Collins, Howie Carson, Par Rylander and Ray Bobrownicki. I invited Shawn and Tyler onto the show because I wanted them to be given an opportunity to address the callous misrepresentation in the direct driticism they made regarding Shawn and Tyler's work on Bruce Lee's alignment with ecological principles. The conversation evolved into a broader discussion about the future of ecological dynamics in coaching science and the emerging role of skill acquisition specialists in professional sports. Five Key PointsThe ecological community continues to grow, with practitioners across different fields finding value in applying these principles. It is interesting to note that Collins is authoring this criticism while at the same time promoting a book that embraces ideas from ecological dynamics. The paper misrepresented Shawn and Tyler's research about Bruce Lee, claiming they altered quotes to fit their argument when in fact they had been explicitly transparent about their modifications and reasoning. There's a fundamental misunderstanding about combining traditional and ecological approaches - you can't simply cherry-pick elements without considering the underlying theoretical foundations. Anyone who suggests that you can do this is either being dishonest or they don't understand the basic assumptions of the ecological theory. The role of skill acquisition specialists is becoming increasingly important in professional sports, with a growing recognition that these positions need to be fully integrated into organisational structures. You can pick and choose methods but you can't pick and choose thoeries. If one theory is directly opposed the the ideas of another theory - trying to suggest that you can mix the two together is just academic populism. Three Key Quotes "Don't throw stones at people that are not throwing stones back at you. I'm just trying to advance the field." - Tyler Yearby "You can't be a vegan and have the odd bacon sandwich... you can't have your theoretical cake and eat it." - Stuart Armstrong "It's just their cop-out way of not actually having these types of interactions and instead hiding behind the keyboard and maybe a research journal paywall... that shows the disingenuous nature of what they're doing." Shawn Myszka Note: This episode was recorded on New Year's Eve 2024 with Shawn Myszka and Dr. Tyler Yearby from EmergenceEmergence websiteShawn and Tyler's Article The ArticleBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.

Way back in Episode 24 when he appeared alongside Tyler Yearby when we discussed their paper Applying an Ecological Approach to Practice Design in American Football.  This particular conversation with Shawn really is all about storytelling . I was always curious to really what the origin story was of the Sport Movement Skill Conference. So for those of you who don't know what the Sport Movement Skill Conference is, it is really the keystone event for me when it comes to my education throughout the year. It really brings alongside theoreticians, practitioners, researchers, those who are practicing the science, and put some alongside those who are practicing the art of coaching, and really blended together unlike any other conference. We get into the origins of the SMSC and touch on the theme of this years conference.   In addition to that, we really get into Sean's own origin story, where he, as always, is open, authentic, transparent, and shares some of his struggles in transitioning from an ecological approach. Obviously, Shawn was one of the early adopters of this approach and it wasn't smooth, it wasn't easy, and I was really grateful that he shared and opened up on some of those trials and tribulations for us here. I think this episode has a ton of practical applications for many coaches. This week on the Pacey Performance Podcast, Rob is speaking to Movement Skill Acquisition Coach at Emergence, Shawn Myszka. Shawn currently serves as a personal performance advisor and movement coach for more than a dozen NFL players. Coaching agility is much more than setting up cones and letting the athletes run routes around them. Agility is much more than just change of direction ability. But with so much complexity to improve the physical quality of "agility", how can we coach it effectively to ensure transfer to the field? In this episode, Shawn details his approach which dives into the world of ecological dynamics and a constraints led approach. He explains how his approach differs to a "traditional" approach of pre-planned movements and drilling them time after time. Shawn presents an example of a closed drill which aims to improve cutting and develops it into a much more open drill so the athlete has to react to a changing environment, much like they would have to do on game day. This is an excellent episode for anyone that wants to ensure their time spent on the field developing "agility" is actually transferring to the field. Talking points - • Typical NFL drills to improve agility and how they can be improved • Traditional approach versus an ecological approach to drill design • How to integrate a constraints led approach into agility training • Closed drills vs open drills • Problems with coaching to a fixed movement profile

Be it in sports, fitness, trade skills, performance arts or just everyday life, the process of acquiring skill in movement is something that we all must go through. For decades now it seems like the most widely adopted method of motor learning has been to apply a reductionist mindset to skill acquisition.  The idea is to improve our movement by practicing isolated component skills with the hopes of perfecting patterns that can then be integrated back into the bigger picture task. For instance, if you wanted to get better at playing basketball you might individually practice free throws, three pointers, lay ups, etc… with the goal of having perfect form on every repetition. If you want to learn parkour, you might have an instructor give you detailed explanations of each vault: how to angle your hands, where to jump from, what each foot is doing at the beginning, middle and end of the vault, where your eyes are trained, your breathing, etc… The problem is that this approach doesn’t address the variability of context and constraint. In a real game of basketball, no two shots will be under the same conditions, and the number of possible conditions to shoot from is far too vast to practice each individually. Even further, this method is directly at odds with how humans actually develop motor skill because it tends to rely on the prefrontal cortex which is great for organizing propositional knowledge but ineffective for performing skillful, adaptive movement. Perhaps you’ve experienced “paralysis by analysis”: freezing up or being unable to act as a result of trying to mentally organize and process too many individual component actions.. As it turns out, it is far more effective to gain movement skill by engaging in tasks built around complex problem solving. It's fairly obvious if you think about it. As babies, we don’t learn to locomote because of our parents detailed instruction of contralateral crawling patterns.  We learn to crawl because we need to solve the problem of not being able to play with that interesting thing on the other side of the room. The process of solving that problem, and other problems like it, ingrains those movement solutions into us and before long we are solving new problems to reach things that are higher up which opens the doors to climbing and moving bipedally. So how do we apply this process of learning to our own movement practice, or even to the practice of elite level athletes? Well on today’s episode of the Evolve Move Play Podcast we’ve got Shawn Myszka joining us to talk about just that. His work has centered around using ecological dynamics to improve not just how top NFL players move, but how they utilize their capacities for attention and intention to become better problem solvers on the field. If you’ve been to one of our retreats, you’ve most likely heard us talk about how it’s not patterns that are important, but solutions. By training at the highest level of complexity possible to achieve our goals and implementing a task based constraint approach to learning, we can effectively tap into our innate motor learning systems and streamline the process of skill acquisition. We really enjoyed having Shawn on the show and hope to have him back soon. Let us know what you think in the comments below and don’t forget to like, share and subscribe! Just Fly Performance Podcast
76: Redefining “Agility” and Sport Movement: Shawn Myszka, Scott Salwasser, Michael Zweifel

Just Fly Performance Podcast

Today’s podcast is a special roundtable episode on sport movement, featuring an expert panel of Shawn Myszka, Scott Salwasser and Michael Zweifel.  Each of these coaches has a unique area of application and insight into making athletes better at reacting to actual sport stimuli, making plays, and ultimately winning games. Shawn Myszka is a movement specialist working with many NFL athletes, and has a large background in physical preparation. Scott Salwasser is the director of speed and power at Texas Tech university and is making his third appearance on the Just Fly Performance Podcast.   Scott is not only a great linear speed coach, as we’ve seen through his talks and writing on the topic, but also is constantly pioneering sport-applicable movement training through his own athletes and interaction with other movement specialists in the field. Michael Zweifel, who has written some tremendous articles for Just Fly Sports in the past, is the owner of Building Better Athletes Performance, is an NCAA record holding wide receiver.   Michael is an industry leader in reactive training for athletes, particularly in the scholastic population, and where specialization is not possible. “Agility” is a word likely most used in marketing, and getting parents to buy in that a particular sports performance institution will make their child better at reacting in their sport, but this is rarely, if ever the case in the manner that the majority of these training interventions are implemented. For today’s podcast, we simply cover the ideas of what “agility” training really is, and best practices in creating training to allow athletes to become more reactive movers on the field of play. Today’s episode is brought to you by SimpliFaster, supplier of high-end athletic development tools, such as the Freelap timing system, kBox, Sprint 1080, and more. Key Points: Shawn, Scott and Michael’s backgrounds in the industry The value of teaching sport agility absent of sport stimuli Thoughts on non-specific agility stimuli such as colors and lights Anecdotes of what Shawn, Scott and Michael do in their practice Quotes “Sport is nothing but a problem solving activity where movements are use to produce the necessary solution” “For football, the biggest (agility) stimulus is other bodies; the stimulus that most of them are reacting with are other human beings, so you don’t need football specific plays to give them an authentic stimuli because a lot of times they are working against someone else and that is the primary stimulus” “How can this running back that runs a 4.4 40yd a 4.0 pro agility getting tackled in the backfield by opponents, it just doesn’t make sense; so it led me Shawn and the idea that (this athlete) is not a very good decision maker” “When you de-couple a movement or an action, so you take away the perception or intention from the movement outcome, you aren’t doing any good” “Most coaches are control freaks, and we know exactly what controlled drills are going to look like; more of an open environment intimidates a lot of coaches” “One things that I’ve gravitated towards is making the agility stimuli as human as possible; humans are free” “We perceive to act and we act to perceive” “The space and time relationship is our key performance indicator” “We know that situations are going to afford and invite and constrain certain (movement) patterns” “I am always going to get to the more specific representation of what athletes are going to see on the field (at the end of the day)” “With my cat and mouse drills, it’s not tag; football players will try and tag their opponent when they get within arms length, and that’s not going to result in you making the play” “My athletes need to be very comfortable being uncomfortable at all times” “Perfect practice is constant problem solving; we try to increase pressure and anxiety and perform movement actions under fatigue” ...
