Welcome to episode 222 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We're super stoked for this week's episode for a couple of reasons. First, we survived April Fool's Day. Second, FORM Swim is sponsoring the show all month long. And last, but not least, we have 3x Olympian and Head of Coaching Science at FORM Swim, Brian Johns on the show this week to talk about all about the Smart Goggle. But first…This episode is sponsored by FORM Swim. Smart Swim 2 google features AR goggle based display that can show 9 real-time metrics including Pace, Stroke Rate, Stroke Count, Distance Per Stroke (DPS), Splits, Time, Distance, Calories, and Heart Rate● Directional headings in open-water● HeadCoach Metrics, including head pitch, head roll, time to neutral, interval and setpacing.Training UpdateApril 15th is the totally arbitrary day that we will begin training for ÖTILLÖ Whistler. Don't know who that is - I'm sure if you've been a fan of cycling for any time, you know a rider or a team he's worked with - with a performance career in cycling for over 25 years there isn't much he hasn't done. And I will jump in with a few of his roles in high-performance in a moment but one thing that was nice about talking to Simon was when you have someone that has been around for so long (sorry if that makes you sound old Simon). But when you're around long enough, you've seen many things come and go - so it was nice to hear what he prioritizes in coaching and cycling performance. And it's not what you might first think when you hear he was Head of Performance Support and Innovation at Team Sky.But just so we're clear on Simon's experience, he started out as a sports science graduate from Cardiff University and became a Sports Scientist with British Cycling just months later. He would go on to coach the Great Briton team pursuit riders through several Olympic cycles before taking up a job managing the Western Australia Institute of Sport, then moving to Team Sky, before his last role as AusCycling Performance Director for the last Olympic cycle.Guest panelist:Simon Joneshttps://www.linkedin.com/in/simonjones5/The podcast co-hosts:Jason Boynton, Ph.D.boyntoncoaching.comDamian Rusesemiprocycling.comCyrus Monkcyclistscientist.comInstagram: @cyclingperformanceclubFacebook: @cyclingperformanceclubTwitter: @cyclingclubpodLinkedIn: The Cycling Performance Club PodcastReferences:Is WorldTour Racing Actually Getting Harder?https://beyondthepeloton.substack.com/p/is-top-level-racing-actually-getting?fbclid=IwAR2f13_oQKAcEFztN0lLpkEDVSxZ2EQJ9qfqI7-nFel7YFdNGUXEKCYOEEw

In this episode we have a conversation with performance specialist, Simon Jones. Don’t know who that is? Well, with a performance career in cycling for over 25 years there isn’t much he hasn’t done. In fact, we're sure if you’ve been a fan of cycling for any amount of time, you know of a rider or a team he’s worked with.He was once Head of Performance Support and Innovation at Team Sky, but prior to that he started out as a sports science graduate from Cardiff University and became a sports scientist with British Cycling just months later. He would go on to coach the Great Britain team pursuit riders through several Olympic cycles before taking up a job managing the Western Australia Institute of Sport, then moving to Team Sky, before his last role as AusCycling Performance Director for the last Olympic cycle. And when someone has been around a high-performance environment for as long as Simon (sorry if that makes you sound old Simon), they would have seen many things come and go - so it was nice to hear what he prioritizes in coaching and cycling performance. He dropped out of his masters and in 2010 took an unpaid job (food and board only) at Canarias Basketball Academy in Spain. After five years at CBA (he did end up taking a salary!) working with some of the top prospects in Europe, he moved on, having now worked in Belgium with Pepinster-Verviers, Liege Basket and Leuven Bears (where he was interim Head Coach for a period), Netherlands (New Heroes Den Bosch), and Spain (CB TerrAlfàs), in roles split between Assistant Coach with the pro side and youth development roles. We have a tremendous session today reflecting how research has shown just how important your pre shot routine is to effective performance.   If you are not looking at or working on this you are REALLY missing a trick.   The tremendous research was conducted by Dr Matt Bridge who is a senior lecturer in coaching and sports science at Birmingham University.   Matt has been working at the University since 2001. He lectures in coaching and applied sport science on the School’s BSc Applied Golf Management Studies and BSc Sport, Physical Education and Coaching Science undergraduate degrees. Matt is also Director of Golf for University Birmingham Sport working with students in running the university's very successful golf teams.   From Matt’s research we now know that   Professional golfers can achieve greater success if they spend less time over the ball, according to the RSM Player Performance study conducted by RSM in collaboration with the European Tour.   The study collected data on 47 European Tour professionals over five tournaments, 304 rounds of golf and 22,579 shots. The study revealed three key findings:       Spending less time over the ball could earn a European Tour player an extra €189k per season.      Quicker shots improve performance. A shorter time over the ball across all putts results in a 90 per cent increase in the likelihood of strokes gained.       Consistency of time spent over the ball leads to a greater chance of making the cut. When players are more consistent in rounds one and two they are 50 per cent more likely to make the cut compared to less consistent players.         It really is fantastic to see the scientific evidence of how important an effective routine is. In the show we look in great details at the importance of understanding what works for YOU as an individual but Matt has some very effective suggestions as to what he see are ‘flexible guidelines’       We also discuss how important it is to understand the role of practice in establishing these unique and personal routines       The importance of time on the actual golf course. Training your brain to play not just practice       The way we can get in the way of our own progress       Why the CONTEXT is everything       How the role of COMMITMENT plays such a vital role in good golf and how you can go about creating a stronger commitment to each and every shot you play       For more details of Matt’s great work and what he can do for your game go to www.mattbridgegolf.com       To spend time with Karl on a one to one basis to develop your game go to www.themindfactor.com. This week we have a VERY special limited offer of a pre season package to transform your game

My guest this week is Dr. Edward Coughlan, skills acquisition specialist.  "As a Skill Acquisition Specialist I empower athletes across all sporting dsiciplines to perform their best in competition. Ineffective practice is why most athletes fall short of peak performance. Practice MUST transfer and Skill Acquisition is the route to achieving that. Skill Acquisition is the perfect blend of Coaching Science, Sport Science and Sport Psychology. All three domains are in constant flow during a session as I connect with an athlete to unlock their potential."   In this episode we discuss: 1.Spatial awareness & decisions making, are these traits inherent or can they be significantly improved through coaching and if so how do we go about this? 2.Simulation in field sports: Is the common practice of drills and simulated games the most effective way of improving skills performance in games such as GAA, soccer etc. 3.How important is deliberate practice in skill acquisition? Why the 10,000 hour rule is invalid?  4.How vision training can improve performance and what is the Mi-Sight programme? 5.Why skills testing is just as important than fitness testing.    Dr. Coughlans website: http://dredwardcoughlan.com
