Faced with the possibility of never being able to ride a horse or play the game of softball again, Ella's strength and perseverance has her back in the saddle and soon to be back on the playing field as well. Ella leaned on a strong support system within her family and close friends as well as some encouragement and prayers from some awesome former Olympians, Jennie Finch, Leah O'Brien-Amico, Crystl Bustos, and Toni Mascarenas.

We also ponder whether the Twins will stay as good as they’ve been, we delight in Oklahoma University softball player Samantha Show’s one-of-a-kind bat flip, and we pull out our goddamn hair about why, especially in the wake of the Albert Almora Jr. incident, the MLB hasn’t put up netting up to the foul poles. The other baseball podcast we shout out this week is A Pod of Their Own, a Mets-centric podcast that, among other things, tries to boost and celebrate female voices in the world of sports broadcasting. Carl & Dave breakdown a laundry list of amazing 27's before getting into some very important announcements: (1) the boys are going to the Winter Meetings but only if you buy stuff from RLR advertisers (2) Saturday 8/19 7pm Carl & Dave are throwing a RLR/Barstool At The Park party at Kane County Cougars game. Show up. Dave then breaks down his attempt at hitting a professional fast pitch softball superstar while getting shamed by Jennie Finch at the Chicago Bandits game last weekend. Carl goes on a tirade about not getting credit for his first major Scoop City from ESPN before calming down over Kris Bryant's last couple weeks. Other topics: Giancarlo Stanton on the Cubs, Hawk Harrelson on Wrigley, American Legion Week, Ricketts handing out rings and the best Reader Emails yet. BIG SHOW.
Carl and WhiteSoxDave pay homage to the greatest #26 in MLB history, Wade Anthony Boggs, and his relentless commitment to pounding Miller Lites (amongst other things). Dave gives his 20-80 scouting report on his 5 Drinking Beer Tools while Carl puts Keith Law in a body bag and sends him down the Cal Sag river. Later, Dave strokes his ego with White Sox #1 Scout Nick Hostetler who joins the guys to talk about Yoan Moncada, life on the road and working with his best friend, Rick Hahn. After, Carl gets very emotional about Willson Contreras but bounces back because Jake Arrieta is bouncing back. The guys then explain why Jennie Finch is terrified of WSD for several reasons and take a couple emails, but only 2 because WSD had to leave recording early for softball playoffs. He went 0-3 btw.

What makes a great athlete? Talent? Training? Or is mostly genetic? On the show this week we get some answers from sports writer David Epstein while discussing his new book The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance.Epstein explains a lot—from why growing up in a small town increases your likelihood of becoming a professional athlete to how softball pitcher Jennie Finch made striking out so many Major League Baseball batters during the 2004 Pepsi All-Star Softball Game look easy. This episode also features a discussion with pediatrician Clay Jones about the terrifying consequences of parents refusing Vitamin K shots for their newborns; and we talk about a new study that attempted to experimentally test the idea that we're "born believers."iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/inquiring-minds/id711675943RSS: feeds.feedburner.com/inquiring-mindsStitcher: stitcher.com/podcast/inquiring-minds

Produced by http://Fastpitch.TV - Jennie Finch talks about her softball career all the way from the beginning to the end. She uses a softball bat that could be purchased at http://SoftballJunk.com. Finch started playing at the age of five after growing up watching her two older brothers play baseball. All though her dad was never her team coach he was her pitching coach her whole softball career. Finch's dad created the Finch Windmill Pitcher that young softball pitchers use to help them train and strengthen their arms just as Finch did when she first starting pitching at the age of 11. Finch later went on to play at the University of Arizona where she led her team to winning a National Championship her junior year. All though her team fell short her senior year the experience lead her to the opportunity to play for the National Team and to go on to win a gold and silver medal in the time she played with them. She had known since the age of 16 that she had wanted to be part of the National softball team and that she wanted to represent her country in the sport of softball. Finch also played in the NPF for the Chicago bandits where she recently retired after deciding that she wanted to settle down a little more and have another child. She now has two kids Ace and Diesel and is married to former baseball player Casey Daigle. Since her retire from playing she has become more involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) where she now is on the advisory board. She also has written a book Throw Like a Girl where she talks about the good and bad and everything in between of her experience of the game. Jennie Finch was a star softball player at the University of Arizona. As a first baseman she lead the team in doubles (14) and extra-base hits (21) and was second on the squad in homeruns (7). Jennie has a powerful fastball,a curveball, screwball, dropball and riseball (changeup) in her arsenal and she spent her freshman year refining them and her pitching strategy. Her work ethic and the competitiveness that fueled it paid off. She finished her freshman year with an impressive 24-6 regular season record, but the best was yet to come. http://www.jenniefinch.com/index
