He confirms that Jeyne Westerling is not pregnant with Robb Stark's child and gives Sybell her rewards for her scheming as well as a piece of his mind. He learns that Ryman Frey is dead and that Cersei is in trouble. Neither concern him much, as he ignores Cersei's plea for help. Simon and Mackelly set their quills down.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister discovers that during the change of hands of Riverrun Brynden Blackfish Tully has gone missing. A well-placed threat to Edmure Tully reveals the truth. The Blackfish swam away in the night. All search parties have come up empty to this point. He meets with Sybell and Jeyne Westerling. Jeyne is still in mourning over the death of her husband King Robb and isn't afraid to let Jaime see it. On the other hand, Sybell speaks of her role in Robb's death and preventing Jeyne from getting pregnant. She wants good marriages for her children in return, as promised by Tywin. Jaime agrees, but also tells her to stay out of his way until she leaves for the west.He crosses the Tumblestone and meets with Edwyn Frey and Walder Rivers. They inform him that Edwyn's father Ryman was hanged on his way back to the Twins. Edwyn thinks his brother Black Walder is responsible. Jaime isn't broken up about it and notices Edwyn's eyes are dry too.One night he dreams of his mother. She says Tywin wanted him to be a great knight and Cersei a queen. Jaime says they both met those goals, but his mother only sheds a tear. Jaime wakes to snow falling on Riverrun. With it, the hope for one more harvest is gone. Simon and Mackelly consider the intestinal fortitude of the tormented Lord of Riverrun.Chapter Review:Jaime parlays with Brynden Blackfish Tully. He makes zero progress. The older man is resigned to Edmure's death, accuses Jaime of oathbreaking and cowardice, and won't believe Jaime's offer of pardons for all within.Jaime calls a war council that is closer to a war. All parties bring their high-horses and nobody budges an inch. The enmity within the besiegers camp is greater than that between the besiegers and the besieged.He gives up, dismisses Ryman Frey back to the Twins for his incompetence and elevates Ryman's son Edwyn to head the Frey contingent. He frees Edmure from his torment and brings him back to be bathed and fed. The kindness comes with an offer and a threat. Edmure will be returned to Riverrun. If he then surrenders the castle the original offer remains - all will be spared. But if he doesn't, everyone inside will die and Edmure's soon-to-be-born baby will be trebucheted over the walls. Simon and Mackelly weigh up the impact.Chapter Review:Jaime Lannister arrives at Riverrun and meets with his cousin Daven Lannister, the new Warden of the West. They have a good rapport. The younger man is modest about his new-found honors, and thinks that his father's cousin Kevan should have been made Warden of the West. Jaime doesn't disagree. Devan has had it with the Freys. Their cruelty and belligerence are doing nothing to help end this siege.Jaime is concerned that so few Riverlands houses are represented. They may have bent the knee but their hearts are clearly not in it. He intends to parley with Brynden Blackfish Tully, who holds Riverrun but first meets with his Aunt Genna and her husband Emmon Frey, to whom Riverrun is promised.Emmon whines about the damage to his new castle. Genna catches up on family news before concluding they should have been given Darry instead. She explains her loyalty to her big brother Tywin, and while expressing her fondness for Jaime, confesses that Tyrion was the child most like his father. Cat watches in horror as the Freys spring their trap. King Robb and many loyal northerners are cut down, and after she murders Lord Walder's grandson, Cat is also dispatched. Simon and Mackelly rend their garments.Chapter Review:The music is terrible, the food unappealing, but Edmure Tully seems in love with his new bride Roslin - who maintains her rictus smile throughout. The drinking is heavy, particularly from the GreatJon Umber. Lord Walder Frey calls for the bedding, the borderline sexual assault whereby the newlyweds are stripped and carried to the marital bed, and King Robb agrees.When the lovers leave, Catelyn Stark's hackles raise when Edwyn Frey pushes Darcey Mormont aside, when she only asked to dance. At this point, the band finally finds a tune: The Rains of Castermere - the song whose only message is “Don't cross the Lannisters.” Crossbow bolts rain down and King Robb and Cat are both struck. A melee ensues, but the Stark guards are outmanned and unable to do more than fight a rearguard.Northmen rush in, but they fight for the wrong side. Cat holds a knife to Jinglebell and threatens/bargains with Lord Walder - but he doesn't care what she does and a figure who appears to be Roose Bolton delivers the coup de grace to his King. Cat and co arrive at the Twins to a frosty reception. Edmure is delighted by Roslin - she takes after her Rosby mother. Roose Bolton confirms some of the news from the north, shares more bad news, and tells a few lies. Simon and Mackelly get measured for our wedding bonnets.Chapter Review:Catelyn, Robb, and Edmure arrive at the Twins. A welcoming party of Freys is all-but attacked by Grey Wind - who's not really doing his part to smooth things over. He's banished to the dog house with Ser Raynald Westerling.Inside Walder Frey lords it over Robb demanding that the young king apologize to a whole bevvy of Frey girls, any one of which might have been his queen. Robb is contrite and says the right things. Walder is disappointed that Queen Jeyne didn't make the trip, he'd wanted to see what would make a king forget his vow, but he concedes that he remembers being young and in love. They break bread together and Catelyn relaxes - now they have guest right, and no harm will befall them.Edmure is pleased with his betrothed Roslin, who cries “with joy” when she meets her future husband. Roose Bolton is there and lies about who was to blame for the debacle at Duskendale, and reports that his march north was interrupted by Gregor Clegane who waited until his forces were split by the Trident before attacking the rearguard. Bolton was forced to leave men behind to prevent the Mountain from crossing the river. Roose is also dishonest (or misinformed) about his bastard Ramsey's part in the destruction of Winterfell. Cat rides through the rain to Edmure's wedding venue. Along the way, she manages to offend both her brother and her son. Robb contemplates his heir, and his choice to fill the role until he has children isn't one that Cat can get behind. We get confirmation about the fate of Balon Greyjoy. Finally, Robb unveils his plan to unseat the Iron Born from Moat Cailin.Chapter Review:Catelyn Stark rides with her son King Robb's host through non-stop rain from Riverrun to the Twins, on their way to Lord Edmure's wedding. Robb's young queen Jeyne had trouble saying goodbye to her husband, but eventually Robb sent her back to Riverrun, where she'll await his return. Edmure is nervous about his future bride. He can't see any reason Lord Walder Frey would pick a beautiful daughter to marry to him. Edmure's shallow thinking irks Cat and her retort offends him.King Robb tells his mother that he needs to have an heir. With Bran and Rickon dead, and no children conceived between him and Jeyne, he's considering Jon Snow. Cat points out that Jon is a brother of the Night's Watch, so can't hold lands or titles. Robb figures if he sends the Night's Watch 100 men, they'll find a way to let Jon go. After that, Robb will legitimize Jon and he'll act as Robb heir until Robb has children. Cat can't support the plan. Robb says it doesn't matter, he's the king.Cat is present when a ship captain tells Robb and his council that Balon Greyjoy is dead and his brother Euron has assumed the Seastone Chair. Robb then tells of his plan to get past the Iron Born at Moat Cailin. He sends two of his officers to rouse the crannogmen to help his host navigate the bogs of the Neck. He will use their knowledge of the area to attack Moat Cailin from multiple sides. Robb plans to send Cat to Seaguard for safe keeping. Hoster Tully is laid to rest. Cat learns of Sansa's marriage and Winterfell's destruction. Lord Edmure Tully is unwillingly betrothed to Roslin Frey, while Lord Walder wants the king to come and apologize for ditching his daughter. Simon and Mackelly worry the Starks hopes continue to fray (pun intended).Chapter Review:Catelyn Stark watches as her father is laid to rest. The Freys brought the last news courtesy of the two Walders (the cockroaches of the north) who have written from the Dreadfort, where they were “rescued” by Bolton's bastard.The Freys have chosen Roslin as Edmure's bride, he'd like to meet her first, but he's accused of looking a gift horse in the mouth. Since the Starks didn't hold their last promise, the Freys want the wedding immediately and they want a face-to-face apology from King Robb to Lord Walder. Catelyn Stark is confined to her father's chambers for freeing Jamie Lannister, there she stumbles upon a family secret. Simon and Mackelly muse upon the butterfly effect. Chapter Review:Desmond Grell and Utherydes Wayn have the tricky task of punishing their Lord's daughter for her treasonous act of freeing Jamie Lannister. She both makes it harder for them (by being entirely unrepentant and refusing to play along with their extenuating circumstance olive branches) and easier for them (by readily agreeing to confinement in her father's chambers).Her dying father calls out about “Tansy”, “blood”, “forgiveness”, “You'll have more sons, and trueborn”. Cat has never heard of Tansy and asking around doesn't help, as the servants and attendants are on orders not to engage with her beyond what is strictly necessary. After some speculation Cat decides that Hoster is referring to Lysa - and the baby she lost when she was first married to Jon Arryn. Cat pens a letter to Lysa pleading for her to visit, but doesn't expect a positive response. Edmure arrives home and reports that Stannis was defeated at King's Landing with Tyrion injured and expected to die, the Riverlands are free of invaders, and he's sending ravens to Harrenhal to have Roose Bolton block any possible routes south for Jamie and Brienne. Cat muses on her duties while Edmure's forces repel Tywin Lannister's repeated attempts to ford the Red Fork. Riverrun celebrates as Tywin's army retreats to the headwaters of the Blackwater Rush, but Cat is uneasy. Mackelly and Simon consider Tywin's next move. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark sees her brother Edmure ride out of Riverrun to prevent Tywin Lannister from returning back to the Westerlands. She feels like she's done her duty all her life, but where her duty lies now is cloudier. News arrives from Storm's End of Courtnay Penrose's demise and the ceding of the castle to Stannis. There is no mention of Edric Storm, but Brienne has met him and confirms that he looks just like Renly, who in turn looked just like Robert. The seed is strong. In a separate letter, Roose Bolton has confirmed his plan to cut off Tywin's natural retreat, by taking Harrenhal, even if he has to kill everyone within to do so. He also hopes that this will remove the stain caused by the behavior of his bastard son Ramsay. Tywin's forces begin to probe the Riverland's defenses along the Red Fork. They're repelled again and again. Cat questions ser Cleos Frey about what he saw in King's Landing. She understands why the Lannister's terms were rejected, but is fixated on the offer of Jamie for Sansa and Arya. Frey admits he only saw Sansa, but Cat's not sure what that means. Tywin comes in force and after multiple pitched battles he is repelled and retreats south, away from both Riverrun and Harrenhal. His destination is the headwaters of the Blackwater Rush, the river that runs to King's Landing. The people of Riverrun celebrate, but Cat's fears only increase. Cat and crew arrive back at Riverrun to good news. Brienne has sworn to protect her. Robb's winning the war. Hoster is hanging on. Jamie is still captive and Ned's remains have been returned. Not withstanding some odd decisions by her brother Edmure, things are looking rosy. Mackelly and Simon get worried. Chapter Review: Catelyn Stark arrives back in the Riverrlands with her entourage, including Brienne of Tarth. Brienne pledges her future to Cat, with the proviso that when the time comes, Cat will release her to get revenge on Stannis for the murder of Renly. They're met by Martyn Rivers who fills her in on what they've missed. Robb winning victories. The West getting some of their own medicine. Twyin leaving Harrenhal to engage. At Riverrun, she learns that Tyrion's plan to free Jamie almost worked, and the Lannister's involved hang from the walls. The place is overrun with smallfolk seeking the security of the castle. Edmure has pulled the forces from the Twins to bolster Roose Bolton's number - this combined force will take the relatively unguarded Harrenhal. Edmure meanwhile will attack Tywin's army as it passes close to Riverrun. Cat visits her dying father, he mistakes her for her sister Lysa  and recalls forcing her to marry Jon Arryn not that “wretched boy." Cat is curious who he means. Ned's bones have been returned. On tonight's episode of Talkin' Thrones, it's the continuation of Season 3 with the next part of the set up of the season with Season 3, Episode 3, Walk of Punishment! One of only three episodes directed by the series creators, this one by David Benioff, this episode starts to see all the storylines established in the first half of this season coalesce. Elsewhere in the Riverlands, Arya says goodbye to Hot Pie as her, Gendry & the Hound are now all prisoners of the Brotherhood without Banners, while Jaime attempts to barter for Brienne's innocence, but learns what over-reliance on his father's name will get him as his journey truly begins with the loss of his hand. In the North, Theon is led on a cat and mouse goose chase by his captors, all apart of Ramsay Bolton's larger game. On Dragonstone, Melisandre departs for parts unknown. North of the Wall, Mance learns of the attack on the Night's Watch, and orders Jon to attack his former brothers, while Sam and company arrive back at Craster's, with things looking grim all around. In King's Landing, Tyrion is made Master of Coin in Littlefinger's place, while Podrick Payne gets some much deserved R&R with the ladies. The North sends its demands to King's Landing, knowing full well they won't be accepted. News arrives of various setbacks. Cat determines to solicit help from King Renly Baratheon. Mackelly and Simon consider what Robb's next move should be. Chapter Review: Robb reads his demands of Cersei to her cousin Cleos Frey. He's to take them to her and return with her reply. They include the return of all prisoners, delivery of 10 highborn Lannisters as hostages, concession that the North and the Riverlands are now their own kingdom. In return, all the prisoners taken by the north will be freed, with one golden exception: Jamie. Bereaved Rickard Karstark doesn't even stick around to listen.  Cat tells Robb that he did well, but things aren't going great. The Riverlands lords are dispersing to defend their homes against Tywin's raiding parties. The main army is camped at Riverrun with no clear idea of a next step. Clamor is rising for an attack on Harrenhal, but that will cost lives and won't be easy. Robb wants Cat to go home to Bran and Rickon. She says she wants to stay with her father.  Later with her uncle Brynden, Cat learns that the Lannisters are building a new army in the West, which threatens to trap Robb in a pincer. They decide that the best way forward is to lure Tywin out of Harrenhal, but he's no Edmure. The only way to make that happen would be to create a new threat that he couldn't ignore. Cat determines to travel south and beseech King Renly to come into the theatre and draw Tywin into action. Cat and company arrive in Riverrun to find Lord Hoster Tully on his deathbed. With both Baratheon brothers vying to take the throne from their nephew, the Northern lords don't know who to support. The Greatjohn Umber has a creative solution, and declares Robb the King in the North to general approval. The boys dip their lances and consider bending the knee. Chapter Review: Catelyn re-enters Riverrun, where she grew up, for the first time in years. She's escorted to her father's rooms by her brother Edmure, recently freed from captivity in Jamie Lannister's host. Lord Hoster is near death but is glad to receive Cat. He's less thrilled to hear that his brother has come home. The old guy still has smouldering animosity for Brynden, and a fondness for his first grandson Robb. Cat finds Robb praying with the northern lords in the Godswood, where she played as a child. He's too busy to see his grandpa, as news has arrived that Renly Baratheon has wed Margery Tyrell and claimed the Iron Throne. With Tywin Lannister retreating to Harrenhal, the path forward for the northern army is not clear. Stannis has the better claim, but Renly has more (i.e., some) charisma. When it feels like the discussion is going, nowhere the GreatJohn Umber rises and dismisses all these southern kings, they mean nothing to him. News of Jamie's capture reaches Tywin. The siege of Riverrun is lifted and Edmure Tully freed. Renly Baratheon has married Margery Tyrell and claimed the throne. Suddenly the Lannister procession is in danger of becoming a rout. Tywin orders Tyrion to King's Landing to bring the new king to heel. The boys are right there with him. Chapter Review: Tywin's bannermen are gathered at the Inn at the Crossroads, again. A messenger from Jamie's army has arrived with only bad news: Jamie is captured. The siege of Riverrun ended. The sell-swords have flipped allegiance. Edmure Tully has been rescued. Maybe 2000 men survived to flee back to the Golden Tooth, but the rest are lost. The bannermen, who aren't a particularly impressive group, are dismayed. They agree that everything should be done to ransom Jamie, but Tyrion points out that Joffrey's decision to behead Ned has shattered any possibility of that happening. Eventually, Tywin turfs them all out apart from Tyrion and Kevan. He announces that they'll retreat south to Harrenhal which his host is large enough to defend. With enemies on all sides, there's not much more he can do. In the meantime, his brutes will continue to burn and pillage the Riverlands. Lastly, Tyrion will be dispatched to King's Landing to rule. He's charged with bringing the new King into line, and Cersei too, and to figure out if anyone on the Small Council is worth their salt. Robb Stark's host lures a large Lannister force away from their siege of Riverrun. Battle ensues in the Whispering Woods. Cat watches and mostly listens, and is rewarded with the capture of none-other-than Jamie Lannister and several of his kin. The boys discuss the shift in the balance of power. Chapter Review: Brydnen Tully reports that Jamie Lannister's forces are split into three, in order to surround Riverrun. His outriders have prevented any news (of the split of Robb's forces) from reaching Jamie, and a series of raids and retreats have shown that Jamie is a bit bored and inclined to chase down the raiders. A plan is hatched. Cat watches through the fog, as northern forces array around a valley in the Whispering Woods. The latest and largest raiding party enters the valley, with Jamie and a large contingent of his besiegers in hot pursuit. Horns sound and the trap is spring. Cat cannot really see much, but she hears muffled fighting.  When it is all over, Theon Greyjoy and GreatJon Umber drag Jamie Lannister before her. He came awfully close to getting to Robb Stark, but he now represents a prized bargaining chip. Other Lannister cousins and loyalists are also captured, and the whole direction of the conflict has tipped. The northern army reaches the Twins. They need to cross the Green Fork, but only  Walder Frey can make that happen. Cat shows off all her negotiation skills in brokering a deal that gets them across safely with only two of her kids married off to Freys. Simon and Mackelly divide and conquer. Chapter Review: The northern host arrives at the Twins, seat of House Frey. The only crossing of the Green Fork in the next 500 miles. Lord Walder will exact a toll. The Frey's send out a welcoming party, inviting Robb Stark to come and discuss. The various lords argue and disagree, but Catelyn Stark cuts through the nonsense by agreeing to go instead. She's banking on the Frey's fealty to House Tully to keep her safe. Inside she's not warmly welcomed, and Walder (surrounded by his prodigious progeny) fairly observes that he also has an oath to King Joffrey, so whichever way he chooses he's an oath-breaker. He bears a grudge for every slight, intended and imagined, ever thrown at the Freys. Cat tries to lend a sympathetic ear. Lord Frey clears the hall and they haggle. Cat returns to the host. Great news, the host can cross and the Frey's 4,000 soldiers will boost their ranks. A couple of kids to be fostered at Winterfell, a new squire for Robb, a future husband for Arya, and Robb gets his pick of the daughters to be the next Lady of Winterfell. Instead of returning to Winterfell, Cat joined her first-born Robb, at Moat Cailin, as he prepared for war with the Lannisters. Showing major restraint, rather than hug him, hold him, and scold him for riding off to war, she helps him devise a battle strategy. Simon and Mac take you through the battle plans and examine what the lords of the North are up against. Chapter Review: When Catelyn Stark, Ser Rodrik Cassel, and Ser Brynden "Blackfish" Tully, reach White Harbor, after leaving the Vale, they learn that Cat's son Robb Stark and his lords bannermen are at Moat Cailin with a large army. Cat decides that she should go to him, rather than return to Winterfell and her two younger sons. Upon arriving at Moat Cailin, she informs the lords that she has lost Tyrion Lannister as a hostage, much to the dismay of the men. She then boots the men from the room and has some one-on-one time with her son. When the two are alone, Robb turns into a 15-year-old boy looking to his mother for help. She tells him that the Knights of the Vale aren't coming to assist them, so he needs to figure out a plan with what he's got. Robb decides to bait Tywin Lannister's army with his foot soldiers, drawing them north, away from the southern crossing of the Green Fork of the Trident. Meanwhile, he and his mounted soldiers will sneak down the west bank to Riverrun and aid Edmure Tully in the fight against Jamie Lannister's army. Sansa is in the clutches of the Lannisters. She only wants to marry Joffrey. They only want her to write to her family demanding their fealty. If she can do that, her dreams might come true. Mac and Simon weigh Sansa's decisions and prospects. Chapter Review: Sansa and Jeyne Poole are confined to apartments in Maegor's Holdfast. Jeyne can't stop crying, having witnessed the butchery that the Lannisters visited on the Starks. Sansa missed all that, because instead of packing for the journey home, she went and told the queen her dad's plans and was incarcerated for "her safety." Sansa is presented to the queen and the small council. All agree that she is not really future queenly material any more in light of her father's treason. She tries to defend him, but upon discovering that they might still allow her wedding to happen, she soon forgets his plight. Tread Perilously finally makes its way to Westeros with the final episode of Game of Thrones. And though we didn't know it during our recording, the episode was called "The Iron Throne." When Jon Snow is advised by just about everyone that his aunt -- the Mad Queen Daenerys Stormborn Targaryen the Unburnt, First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals, The Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, Mother of Dragons, Breaker of Chains, and Protector of the Realm -- will definitely kill him at the first opportunity, the Prince of Indecision debates the merits of killing her first versus his own desire to see her naked again. After he finally makes a decision, the Realm must deal with the repercussions. Despite a Targaryen plot against Tread Perilously's sound quality, Erik points out the absence of Jon Connington, Little Aegon, and a few other Ice and Fire characters. He also admits he missed one episode of the series. Justin discusses the difficulty with endings. He also praises the visual excellence of the episode. Superior air power comes into play. Erik loses his mind over the sudden appearances of Edmure Tully and Quentyn Martell. Issues of plot convenience are discussed and Daenerys's heel turn is examined at length. Also, Erik makes a bold Winds of Winter prediction regarding Little Finger.
