It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Julia Roberts was one of the dominant Hollywood stars for a good twenty-year period. From her breakout role in 1988's Mystic Pizza, Roberts skyrocketed to the top of the A-list when she starred opposite Richard Gere in Garry Marshall's Pretty Woman. An unlikely Cinderella story about an escort that falls in love with a high-powered executive, it's a movie that is definitely a Hollywood fairytale, but one that a lot of people loved in 1990, with it being one of the year's top-grossing movies. From there, Roberts made a string of hits, including Flatliners, The Pelican Brief, My Best Friend's Wedding, Notting Hill and many more, but respect in more heavy vehicles eluded her. Movies like Mary Reilly and Michael Collins were embarrassing for how miscast she was, and for awhile, it looked like she would be stuck doing lightweight but highly profitable rom coms. However, that changed in 2000 when she played the lead in Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich. Based on a true story, the movie finally won her the Academy Award that had long eluded her. It earned her serious cred, and her fame took on a whole new dimension, with roles in Oceans' Eleven, Mona Lisa Smile and Eat Pray Love all big successes. Yet, as the business began to change, emphasizing tentpole movies, Roberts seemed to struggle more than contemporaries like Sandra Bullock to find her place. Eventually, she made a move into TV Prime Video's Homecoming. Still, it's notable how low-key the release of a show like Gaslit was despite the names involved. There was a time when Julia Roberts doing a TV series would have been an event.
Romance and Horror have been going hand in hand for years. Heck, that's how we got Dracula. But now there's a story about a woman who has it bad for the gruesome twosome of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It's Halloween week, and time to confess that I'm strangely attracted to Gothic horror stories and creepy "romance," especially the many interpretations of the fascinating classic 19th century novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Each filmmaker and writer present different themes in their Jekyll and Hyde adaptations, from gender and sexual politics, personal ethics and morality, to abusive patriarchal structures and class and power inequities. The original story featured only men, but that hasn't stopped many modern adaptations of the story from featuring women as a romantic plot point and catalyst for Mr. Hyde's deeply disturbing and scary nuances.CW: brief scenes and mentions of physical, sexual and psychological abusehttps://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comChat with me on Threads: poppy_confessesRecognizing domestic violence and abuse is the first step.Do you recognize the signs of dating violence and abuse?Spark Notes has the full text of the novella and explorations of its themes and motifs."A strange story of mystery and adventure, love and laughter" says the trailer for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941). I haven't laughed once in all the times I've watched this movie, but there's plenty of mystery, suspense and spookiness. Here's the "cheap little dreams" scene from the 1941 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde movie. Spencer Tracy is seriously creepy-evil and poor Ingrid had tried to get away from his abuse for weeks and months."...[Stevenson] did not wish to have the allegory rigidly defined. 'Everything is true,' he told Sidney Colvin, 'only the opposite is true too; you must believe both equally or be damned." Fascinating look at the many interpretations and adaptations of the Jekyll and Hyde story. This scene from Mary Reilly represents the undercurrent of class, intimacy, sexuality, passion and veiled threat that this version brings to the story. Honestly Malkovich is terrifying but Julia Roberts is unflappable as Mary.Support the showIf you enjoyed this episode, please click share in your podcast app and tell your friends! Mary Reilly Nichols, director of the Yoga Studies program at Nalanda Institute for Contemplative Science in New York City, reflects on her transformational relationship with wonder, dating back to her time as a student at Harvard in the 1970s. When Mary first began feeling currents of energy coursing up her spine and into the crown of her head, hearing wind chimes and choral music unheard by others, she tried to distance herself from what it all would mean to her life. “I was trying to tamp it down,” Mary tells Wonderstruck's Elizabeth Rovere. “Nobody understood.” From that initial state of resistance, Mary soon learned to embrace her awakening, ultimately relying on it as a foundation upon which she continues to elevate consciousness and change lives.https://wonderstruck.orghttps://www.instagram.com/wonderstruckpod/https://www.youtube.com/@wonderstruckpodhttps://www.facebook.com/wonderstruckpodhttps://twitter.com/wonderstruckpodhttps://www.tiktok.com/@wonderstruckpodhttps://www.meditationmary.com Hosted on Acast. Twenty-five years of America's sweetheart looking sad and rightfully so in MARY REILLY. Julia Roberts gets down in the mucky muck by playing a maid to John Malkovich and Hollywood's version of his monstrous alter ego... which is just John Malkovich with longer hair and no tact. On this episode we pine for the days when Ms. Roberts had a less icky screen role, say as a prostitute or even Hugh Grant's lover. All manner of sins which she has done in her service as a genuine movie star, but THIS... this was too much for the American public in 1996 and it has not become any sexier since. As parents, a lot of anxiety can come from concerns around the social skills of our children. Whether it's the child showing signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder, social anxiety, or simply delayed social skill development - not to mention the added complexity of the global pandemic and how it has changed our social interactions - it's easy to feel lost and frustrated. Fortunately for us, Mary Reilly has stepped in to share her experience and guidance on these topics and more. At the Housson Center, she regularly conducts Developmental and Psychoeducational Evaluations, assessments used to identify Autism Spectrum Disorder and other socio-developmental disorders, individual and family therapy, and parent training for individuals and their families who are struggling behaviorally and emotionally. All of this gives her the perspective and authority to speak into these struggles, helping parents understand and nurture their children - and find joy and reassurance in the process.

She specializes in direct transmission experiential Yoga with an emphasis on the development of wisdom and direct experience through the lens of the non-duality traditions of Advaita Vedanta, and the Tantric methods of the Trika school of Kashmir Shaivism and Kundalini Yoga. Her meeting in the mid-1970”s with the Siddha Master, Baba Muktananda, a Shaktipat Guru, changed the trajectory of her life. She spent 5 years under Muktananda’s direct tutelage living in his residential ashrams both in India and here in the US. She currently teaches in a diverse range of settings from academia, to yoga studios and Institutes, to stress management in psychiatric clinical settings and is involved in ongoing research on the mind/body benefits of yoga and meditation. Her story is unusual in many ways, but importantly she began her remarkable and often dramatic journey as a very normal young college freshman when the latent Kundalini energy awoke, quite spontaneously while she was studying in her dorm room. She had no interest in spirituality and describes her normalcy in her writings about her awakening on her website, http://www.meditationmary.com/home/ “I first met Shiva one evening in my dorm room during my freshman year at college. It was a few weeks into the first fall semester at Harvard. I had scored a single room as a freshman by claiming on my roommate questionnaire that I was impossible to live with, had erratic sleep habits, and smoked minimally 2 packs a day, which was all true.”“There were a handful of people I knew in those days who meditated but the whole thing held no appeal for me, I thought it looked pointlessly unproductive and boring.”The intensity of her study and depth of her experience is very insightful and instructive, particularly for those who will never meet a true Shaktipat Guru in the physical form. She is adamant about the fact that you can still have a very rich and satisfying relationship with the Supreme Guru who resides in your heart as the essence of your breath. In our conversation, she elaborates on the details of how she engages this divine relationship. This is a conversation not to be missed. In fact, you may find yourself listening to it several times. Grab a drink of your favorite beverage and enjoy the conversation. Please leave your comments on this post on the websites below. We respond to every comment personally. We join Mary Reilly and Brad Neumann at the Michigan Association of Planning Conference to discuss two topics that MSU Extension has been educating local communities on recently. Mary talks about how local communities need to plan and zone for recreational marijuana and the potential issues that the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act has presented. Brad Neumann, a land use educator with MSUE in Marquette, discusses the health impacts that climate change is currently causing in Michigan, as well as the expected threats as the climate continues to warm. Brad gives some best practices for how communities across the state can plan for the future.
Mary Reilly has been working in radio since 1987. You’ve heard her in Tucson, Phoenix, a variety of Midwest towns and now in Eugene, Oregon. She's interviewed rock stars, movie stars and governors but one of her favorite achievements is showing that a two-woman morning show CAN be successful. A voice-over talent, copywriter and morning co-host of Liz and Reilly 94.5 mix FM, Mary is no “one trick pony.” “If you’re doing what you love you are going to find a way to make it work,” said Mary. Find out how Mary found a career that connected her with her love of music. Download my podcast interview with Mary here on iTunes! The Ghouls are back at it this week with another round of guilty pleasure movies! Jacki brings us Mary Reilly. For Marissa, they talk about Bram Stoker’s Dracula. They both defend and tear down the movies that they love so much. Street cred be damned-these movies are so good! And not unlike a few stars of these movies, what isn’t good is the accents the ladies try to pull off. Apologies to the listeners across the pond!

After speaking with Dr. Michael Z. Kurtz about the status of Zika Virus in the United States, he asked, "Can we talk about something happy next time?" Listen to this conversation and see if you don't conclude we are doomed. On a lighter note, stay until the end of this full-length episode to hear Jonathan Tammara from San Bernardo Ice Cream make our minds wander and our mouths water.
