Quasi cento gli scatti selezionati, i più amati dall'autore, che la curatrice Biba Giacchetti ha scelto per rendere omaggio alla filosofia di vita e al modo di intendere la fotografia di Erwitt: i celebri ritratti di Marilyn Monroe, Che Guevara, Jack Kerouac, Marlene Dietrich, ma anche fotografie che hanno fatto la storia, come il diverbio tra Richard Nixon e Nikita Chruščëv, il funerale di John Fitzgerald Kennedy, l'indimenticabile match tra Joe Frazier e Muhammad Alì, così come le icone più amate dal pubblico per la loro forza romantica, come il California Kiss, o quelle più intime e private come il tenero scatto alla sua primogenita neonata, distesa sul letto, con la madre che la osserva. Un uomo che parlava tante lingue e assorbi la cultura di questi paesi. Ebbe quattro mogli, sei figli e un grande numero di nipoti.Dopo l'adolescenza ad Hollywood e gli studi in fotografia a Los Angeles e New York, conobbe Robert Capa, Edward Steichen e Roy Stryker, divenuti suoi mentori. Quest'ultimo lo assunse alla Standard Oil Company per la quale lavorò ad un libro fotografico e ad un reportage sulla città di Pittsburgh. Nel 1953 Robert Capa lo chiamò nell' agenzia Magnum e dal 1960 al 1963 ne fu presidente; oltre a collaborare con riviste del calibro di “Life”, dagli anni ‘70 si concentrò maggiormente sul cinema, realizzando film e documentari e negli anni ‘80 commedie satiriche oper la televisione. Dagli anni Novanta ha svolto una intensa vita professionale che tocca gli aspetti più disparati della fotografia. Ad oggi i libri pubblicati da Erwitt sono più di 45. For four decades he has worked with the world's most highly regarded photographers, including Martin Parr and Brian Griffin, one of the music industry's most prominent photographers. More recently, he was chosen to print hitherto unseen photographs for the celebrated late photographer Elliott Erwitt for his ‘Found, not Lost' book. As a photographer, Mike Crawford's captivating work, featuring urban landscapes and portraiture, is predominantly shot on film and crafted in the darkroom. I visit Mike on location at his company Lighthouse Darkroom, within the building that was once home to Russia's Zenit UK operation. The great photographer Elliott Erwitt passed away last November, but we sat down with his son-in-law, the Internationally acclaimed photographer Rick Smolan, to discuss Erwitt's life and work. Few have had such a close vantage on this inspiration to so many photographers today.

Da Robert Capa a Paolo Pellegrin, una straordinaria carrellata di oltre duecento immagini che raccontano la cronaca, la storia e il costume del nostro paese negli ultimi 70 anni. L'esposizione è curata da Walter Guadagnini con la collaborazione di Arianna Visani ed organizzata da SUAZES in collaborazione con CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia e Magnum Photos. Venti sono gli autori chiamati a raccontare eventi grandi e piccoli, personaggi e luoghi dell'Italia dal dopoguerra a oggi, in un affascinante intreccio di fotografie celeberrime e di altre meno note, di luoghi conosciuti in tutto il mondo e di semplici cittadini, che compongono il tessuto sociale e visivo del nostro paese. Introdotta da un omaggio ad Henri Cartier-Bresson e al suo viaggio in Italia negli anni Trenta, la mostra prende avvio con due serie strepitose, una di Robert Capa, dedicata alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, che mostra un paese in rovina, distrutto da cinque anni di conflitto, e una di David Seymour, che nel 1947 riprende invece i turisti che tornano a visitare la Cappella Sistina: l'eterna bellezza dell'arte italiana che appare come il segno della rinascita di un'intera nazione.La mostra, organizzata per decenni, prosegue con le immagini di Elliott Erwitt, René Burri e di Herbert List: il primo racconta Roma, le sue bellezze e le sue contraddizioni con lo sguardo affettuosamente ironico che lo ha reso famoso; il secondo ci porta all'interno della storica mostra di Picasso del 1953 a Milano, un evento indimenticabile per la cultura italiana, che tornava a confrontarsi con i grandi miti della contemporaneità; il terzo infine, con una serie di scatti strepitosi, porta lo spettatore all'interno di Cinecittà, dove stava nascendo la “Hollywood sul Tevere”, che tanta fama porterà all'Italia nel decennio successivo. Un decennio che in mostra è raccontato da tre figure forse meno conosciute ma non per questo meno interessanti della storia della fotografia e di Magnum: Thomas Hoepker, che presenta tre immagini del trionfo di Cassius Clay (poi Mohamed Alì) alle Olimpiadi di Roma del 1960, Bruno Barbey, che documenta i funerali di Togliatti, figura centrale della politica italiana, e non solo, figura amata dal popolo al di là del giudizio che ne darà poi la storia, e Erich Lessing, con un servizio che riporta direttamente ai tempi del “boom” economico, con una carrellata sulla spiaggia di Cesenatico, con i suoi riti e i suoi miti. Cambia il clima negli anni Settanta e Ferdinando Scianna racconta il passaggio tra i due decenni attraverso le immagini di una Sicilia sempre uguale e sempre mutevole, Leonard Freed riprende frammenti dello storico referendum sul divorzio che cambiò per sempre la società italiana, mentre Raymond Depardon presenta una delle sue serie più struggenti, quella sui manicomi, realizzata nel momento in cui la Legge Basaglia, che ne prevedeva la chiusura, segnava un altro grande passo del costume nazionale. Una decina di fotografie ancora realizzate da Scianna aprono gli anni Ottanta: sono le immagini di un Berlusconi in versione imprenditore di successo, appena prima della discesa in politica, immagini illuminanti sul rapporto tra potere e immagine a partire da quel momento storico. Ma il decennio è anche quello della definitiva affermazione del turismo di massa nel nostro paese: le grandi fotografie di Martin Parr colgono genialmente il contrasto tra la bellezza dei luoghi e il cattivo gusto dei nuovi visitatori, con effetti di mirabile comicità. Patrick Zachmann invece racconta la Napoli della camorra, prima di “Gomorra” ma con la stessa intensità: un documento crudo, la faccia nascosta (nemmeno troppo) dell'Italia da bere del decennio.Alla fine del percorso si arriva alla contemporaneità: gli anni Novanta e Duemila sono come un viaggio tra i nostri ricordi più recenti e le nostre vicende attuali: Alex Majoli racconta le discoteche romagnole di allora e di oggi, in un lavoro concepito appositamente per questa occasione; Thomas Dworzak ci riporta alle drammatiche giornate del G8 di Genova, Peter Marlow all'ancor più tragica vicenda della guerra nella ex Jugoslavia, narrata dagli occhi dei soldati americani su una portaerei al largo delle coste italiane; Chris Steele-Perkins torna invece in Vaticano – presenza costante nella mostra in quanto presenza costante nella storia e nella cronaca d'Italia – per raccontare questa volta un aspetto letteralmente giocoso, il torneo di calcio tra religiosi “Clericus Cup”, quasi un'anticipazione delle immagini surreali di “The Young Pope”. Paolo Pellegrin chiude il decennio, con le immagini della folla assiepata in Piazza San Pietro nella veglia per la morte di Papa Giovanni Paolo II e con quelle di un'altra folla, quella dei migranti su un barcone, tragico segnale dell'attualità. Uscendo il visitatore incontra infine la grande, straordinaria sequenza di immagini di Mark Power dedicate ai luoghi simbolo della cultura italiana, da Piazza San Marco alla Basilica di San Petronio a Bologna, dal Museo del Cinema di Torino al Duomo di Milano, appartenenti alla collezione di Intesa Sanpaolo, capolavori dell'architettura e dell'ingegno italiano, che costituiscono l'identità primaria del nostro paese, che a loro volta diventano soggetto per la realizzazione di autentici capolavori fotografici.IL POSTO DELLE PAROLEascoltare fa pensarehttps://ilpostodelleparole.it/

https://youtu.be/wKB2jLcJ9ic Muy buenos días! Vamos a hablar del segundo fotógrafo de El Café del fotógrafo. Concretamente os hablaré de Elliott Erwitt Viernes, 13 además, bueno, no se si sois supersticiosos o no o si es el martes 13 el que os da mala suerte... da igual, depende de cada cultura.  La cuestión es que es viernes y como os dije la semana pasada los viernes los podemos dedicar a hablar de fotógrafos, así que hoy me gustaría hablaros del maravilloso fotógrafo de calle o street photographer como prefiráis llamarlo. No se muy bien por donde empezar con este crack de la fotografía de calle.  Si no lo conocéis os va a encantar, incluso aunque no seáis muy aficionados a la fotografía callejera. Sus fotos están tan llenas de humor, sarcasmo, ironía y situaciones interesantes, que no os dejarán indiferentes.  Empezaremos por el principio Elliott Erwitt ¿Quién es Elliott Erwitt? Sería mejor preguntar que quién es Elio Romano Erwitt que es su nombre real, aunque se le ha conocido siempre como Elliott por la dificultad de los americanos para pronunciar Hello Elio.  Se trata de un fotógrafo estaounidense que nació en 1928 es decir, tiene nada más y nada menos que 91 años. Y lleva haciendo fotos desde finales de los 40, osea, unos 50 años con la cámara colgando, casi nada. Es miembro de la agencia Magnum, si no la conocéis es una de las agencias de fotoperiodismo más prestigiosas del mundo.  Y lo que hace es fotografía callejera o streetphotography si lo preferís y fotoperiodismo. Recuerdo cuando me hablaron de él hace unos años, en un curso de fotografía en el que a cada rato descubríamos nuevos fotógrafos, para nosotros Elliott Erwitt era ese fotógrafo tan gracioso de los perros. Si buscais en Google "Elliott Erwitt dogs" veréis una buena colección de las fotografías que hizo a perros y entenderéis que lo definiéramos de esa forma.  Tiene una serie de fotos de perros en las que se ven los zapatos de una persona y perros vistos de una forma muy curiosa.Por ejemplo, en una de las fotos aparece un perro diminuto, luego a su izquierda las piernas de una mujer con unas botas negras y a la izquierda de la mujer aparecen unas patas de gran danés que en un principio no habíamos descubierto y que rematan la foto con ese toque irónico, con esa gracia que tienen muchas de las fotos de Elliott Erwitt y que siempre consiguen sacarnos una sonrisa.  Y es que siempre me he imaginado a Erwitt como un tipo que se parte de risa mientras va haciendo fotos por la calle. Su cabeza debe de estar llena de situaciones cómicas y con su talento es capaz de encontrarlas en las escenas que día a día ocurren en las calles de todas las ciudades del mundo.  La mayor parte de sus fotografías son en blanco y negro, aunque si investigáis un poco más a fondo encontraréis algunas en color que, aunque prefiero las de blanco y negro, también son muy interesantes.  Es un super crack de la composición. Maneja de forma formidable el punto de vista en el que se sitúa para superponer objetos o elementos de la escena para sugerir mensajes que desde otro punto de vista no tendrían sentido. Controla la yuxtaposición que da miedo. Muchas de sus fotografías son escenas totalmente corrientes, totalmente ordinarias pero que ocurren junto a algún elemento que las convierte en fotografías super interesantes.  Me viene a la cabeza una foto que es tan simple, que da hasta un poco de rabia. Es una foto de un grifo que sale de una tubería desde el suelo hasta más o menos medio metro  y a su lado un pájaro así grande, una garza o algo por el estilo.  !Tienen los dos la misma forma! U otra foto de un meeting o encuentro del partido democratico en nueva york, en la que la gente lleva unas pancartas en las que sale dibujado un cacahuete con una sonrisa enorme. Pues el tío le hace un retrato a una mujer junto a una de esas pancartas y situada frente a otra de las pancartas ocupando justo el espacio que ocupa el ca...

Born in Paris in 1928 to Russian parents, Elliott Erwitt spent his childhood in Milan, then emigrated to the US, via France, with his family in 1939. As a teenager living in Hollywood, he developed an interest in photography and worked in a commercial darkroom before experimenting with photography at Los Angeles City College. In 1948 he moved to New York and exchanged janitorial work for film classes at the New School for Social Research. Erwitt traveled in France and Italy in 1949 with his trusty Rolleiflex camera. In 1951 he was drafted for military service and undertook various photographic duties while serving in a unit of the Army Signal Corps in Germany and France. While in New York, Erwitt met Edward Steichen, Robert Capa and Roy Stryker, the former head of the Farm Security Administration. Stryker initially hired Erwitt to work for the Standard Oil Company, where he was building up a photographic library for the company, and subsequently commissioned him to undertake a project documenting the city of Pittsburgh. In 1953 Erwitt joined Magnum Photos and worked as a freelance photographer for Collier's, Look, Life, Holiday and other luminaries in that golden period for illustrated magazines. To this day he is for hire and continues to work for a variety of journalistic and commercial outfits. In the late 1960s Erwitt served as Magnum's president for three years. He then turned to film: in the 1970s he produced several noted documentaries and in the 1980s eighteen comedy films for Home Box Office. Street Photography, what is it?  In this episode I’ve asked award winning photographers Tony Fouhse and Justin Wonnacott to join me in a discussion on street photography. As with any good discussion, we did get a little off topic, but it was still relevant and important to not just street photography, but important issues facing photographers today. This episode is not trying to answer what is right and what is wrong, but start a discussion on the topic of street photography. I would like to say Leslie Hanti's photographic work is serendipitous, but that would imply his work comes by chance or luck. While there is alway an element of luck and chance, it is also Leslie's vision, determination and persistence which allows him to capture his images. As you will hear, Leslie can spend hours, days, weeks and years waiting for all of the elements in an image to come together. Leslie's card reads "Stop-by-Stop Images", because he is almost always with camera in-hand and ready to record the world as he sees it.  Like an onion, you have to peel back the many layers to get to know Leslie Hanti. Over the last few years and I think I've only seen a small fraction of his work. Hopefully soon we will all have an opportunity to see more of his work.
