This time he chimes in on Marlon "Chito" Vera vs. Dominick "da D0min8r" (it's not a joke, that's his actual nickname) Cruz and explains exactly how Chito was able to set up that brutal, brutal finish. As technology has given extremist movements a much greater ability to spread their views and carry out violence, researchers are studying radicalization now more than ever. But one area that hasn't received enough attention is an examination of women who become radicalized. Understanding radicalization is important in the United States as well, which is seeing the emergence of a far-right Christian tradition that has already carried out a number of violent acts. What makes them want to risk their lives for a cause or become extreme? It's a complex question with many answers for the different militant movements that have seen large numbers of female fighters, including some that seek to restrict women's rights. Are there similarities among these women as well? More importantly, what do the answers to these questions tell us about our own society? In this episode, we feature Nimmi Gowrinathan. She's the author of "Radicalizing Her," a new book that provides a close look at the motivations of various women who have gotten involved in militant groups. She's also the founder and director of the Politics of Sexual Violence Initiative, a global research project examining the impact of rape on women's political identities in extremist movements. This week, Miguel spoke to Dr. Jennifer McClearen (@jmcclearen), a feminist media scholar whose research examines sports, difference, and consumer culture. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Sports, Media, and Culture in the Department of Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. McClearen published her first book, Fighting Visibility: Sports Media and Female Athletes in the UFC, with the Studies in Sports Media Series with the University of Illinois Press in March 2021. First, Miguel asked Dr. McClearen about the Millennial Sports Media Brand and how the UFC leveraged the early days of blogs and social media to market their product. Additionally, Miguel and Dr. McClearen broke down how the UFC uses the myth of the American dream and protestant work ethic to get their fighters to buy into the UFC neoliberal business model. Dr. McClearen explains how it harms female fighters, and in particular, non-white female UFC fighters. Miguel also asked Dr. McClearen about the relationship between the UFC and the gig economy, the push by former UFC fighter Leslie Smith to unionize UFC fighters, plus more. Note: Originally recorded on July 22, 2021, before the cancellation of Nunes vs. Pena at UFC 265. Next, Miguel gives you his Molotov MVP for episode 25, current Bellator MMA fighter Leslie Smith.
