Emotional Intelligence–or EQ is now more vital than ever. In today's episode of The Unbeatable Mind, Mark's daughter Catherine is sitting down for a candid and insightful discussion about emotional development and the evolving landscape of leadership in a world that's becoming more dominated by AI. Catherine and Mark explore the limitations of traditional leadership models that prioritize IQ over EQ, touching on how emotional awareness, self-control, and the oft-overlooked concept of “us” in relationships are fundamental aspects of effective leadership. Drawing from their personal experiences, Mark and Catherine dissect the energy of emotions, the mind-body connection, and the importance of radical self-acceptance. Together, Mark and Catherine emphasize that real growth does not happen in isolation, it's our most challenging interactions through the emotional landscape that we become better leaders, teammates, and people. Key Takeaways: Relational Development: Discover how the most impactful growth happens not in isolation, but through relationships. Real emotional development is tested through authentic connection and mutual vulnerability. EQ VS. IQ: Learn why Mark and Catherine believe EQ is the leadership superpower of the future. When machines can outperform us in data and logic, our unique advantage lies in self-awareness, empathy, and connection. The Body-Mind Connection: Understand how acknowledging the somatic side of your feelings can unlock deep growth and healing. Emotions are simply energy in motion—the body plays a key role. EQ as a Daily Practice: Recognize how emotional maturity is not a destination—but rather a lifelong journey that requires mindfulness, honest communication, and vulnerability. Welcome to another exciting episode of Connected Leadership Bytes, where we are exploring the future of work, the role of leadership in navigating these changes, and how to seize future opportunities instead of fearing them. Our guest this week is PwC's Global Workforce Leader, Peter Brown. Pete leads a team of over 10,000 professionals supporting businesses with their workforce challenges. He has over 25 years of global experience advising clients around a number of workforce disciplines. He also sponsors PwC's Global Centre for Transformative Leadership. Andy revisits his podcast episode with Peter, and they consider how the pace of change in our workplace is accelerating, shaped by phenomena such as social media and AI's rapid evolution. Peter shares how platforms like TikTok and Gen AI amassed an unprecedented number of users within months of launching, pointing to a speedier, high-tech future. Andy also explores with Peter the impact of global macro trends like climate change and disruptive technologies as well as the importance of human capacity to adapt and learn. Pete stresses the need for urgency to deal with pressing issues such as the climate crisis. He suggests that technology is not an enemy but a powerful tool that can be harnessed for efficiency and productivity and highlights the necessity to protect people, not jobs, since the workforce must adapt and evolve as technology does. This episode provides foresight into the acceleration of existing work trends and emerging ones to anticipate in the global workplace environment. Key Takeaways: Embrace Technology but Focus on Human Skills : While AI and technology are advancing rapidly, they cannot replace innate human skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, empathy, and collaboration. Hybrid Work is Here to Stay: Organisations need to find the right balance between in-office and remote work that suits their business needs and employee preferences. Skills Development is Critical: There is a growing emphasis on reskilling and upskilling to meet the demands of an ever-changing work environment. Trust and Flexibility Drive Productivity: Instead of focusing on presenteeism or rigid schedules, leaders should prioritise results-based performance and empower employees to work in ways that suit them best. Alignment of Values Matters: Creating an environment that respects individual needs and fosters meaningful engagement is crucial for retaining talent in today's competitive market. Website: https://monikaguzek.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/monika-guzek/ Courses: https://monikaguzek.com/sklep/ Navigating Challenges and Embracing Diversity Monika and I dove into the tough realities of today's world—everything from the lingering effects of the pandemic and global conflicts to economic struggles and shifting governments. One of the biggest challenges we see? The decline of joy in the workplace. Monika pointed out that the blending of personal and corporate life plays a huge role in this. She stressed the importance of embracing cultural and generational diversity, with leaders stepping up to empower their teams and create truly inclusive environments. We also explored how social skills are critical in today's workplace—many people feel overwhelmed and struggle to manage their workload effectively. Embracing Diverse Communication and Cultural Nuances Communication in a diverse workplace isn't just about words—it's about understanding the meaning behind them. Monika emphasized the need to strike a balance between positivity and tough conversations, as well as the importance of reading between the lines in different cultural contexts. I completely agreed. Clear communication is key, but so is recognizing cultural nuances. Personally, I appreciate direct communication and love using humor as a tool—even if it doesn't always land perfectly. We both agreed that embracing these differences leads to stronger collaboration and better teamwork. Fostering a Healthy Workplace Culture We also explored what it takes to build a thriving workplace culture—one where people feel connected and supported. Monika highlighted the importance of playfulness and fun at work, even bringing up how something as simple as Lego can spark creativity. That said, there's a balance—some industries require a more structured approach. We also touched on the insights from The Culture Map, discussing how different cultural dimensions influence workplace interactions. At the end of the day, considering different perspectives makes for a more productive and enjoyable work environment. Building Trust in Diverse Workplaces Trust is the foundation of any great workplace. When leaders and employees trust each other, they can create better products and services that make a real impact. I emphasized how crucial it is for leaders to foster that trust—because without it, everything else falls apart. Monika added that trust-building requires awareness of cultural differences and individual needs. It's all about open communication, self-awareness, and a conscious approach to understanding those we work with. When we get this right, we create workplaces where people feel valued, heard, and truly connected.

This week our host Brandi Starr is joined by Michael Allison, CEO of the Adversity Academy Leadership Development Company. Meet Michael Allison, a U.S. Marine Corps Veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and leadership expert with over 20 years of experience transforming lives and organizations. As a globally recognized keynote speaker, Michael has delivered transformative presentations to Fortune 500 companies like Microsoft, NBC, and the University of Columbia, emphasizing leadership, resilience, and corporate culture. In this episode of Revenue Rehab, Brandi and Michael delve into the leadership crisis facing organizations today, exploring how outdated models result in disengagement, high turnover, and a lack of resilience. They'll share insights on empowering employees at every level, tying effective leadership to revenue growth, and strategies for fostering a culture of accountability and transformation. Bullet Points of Key Topics + Chapter Markers: Topic #1 The Unleadership Concept: Empowering Every Level [17:33] Michael Allison introduces the concept of "unleadership," highlighting that anyone with courage and willpower can assume leadership roles. He shares, "We realized that a lot of people have this mindset of thinking that I do not have a leadership role." By encouraging a culture where every employee feels empowered, Allison underscores the importance of involving all team members in innovative processes, regardless of their position. Topic #2 Silent Killers in Leadership and Their Impact on Revenue [10:48] Allison identifies the silent killers of leadership within organizations, such as dismissing employee contributions and fostering a culture of fear. He states, "Whenever you actually shut down an employee or shut down a staff member...these are some of the silent killers." He emphasizes the importance of listening to employees and leveraging their ideas to enhance operational efficiency and revenue generation, as exemplified by his work with the railroad industry. Topic #3 Complacency Kills: Driving Organizational Success with Resilient Leadership [20:38] Michael Allison stresses the crucial lesson of "complacency kills" learned in the military, which translates to the business world as a need for constant vigilance and adaptability. He explains, "Leadership does not stay there. Which is why I talk about you do not want to get complacent." Allison highlights that empowering teams to avoid complacency is integral in ensuring ongoing growth and success in organizations. What's One Thing You Can Do Today Michael's ‘One Thing' for the audience is to critically assess your current leadership model and practices. Begin by asking yourself if your approach genuinely inspires resilience, or if it's driven by outdated models and fear-based strategies. He recommends investing in leadership transformation by moving beyond mere management tactics to true leadership development. Additionally, make resilience a core part of your business strategy, equipping your team with the necessary mindset, tools, and skills to propel forward. Adopting these steps will empower you to make significant improvements within your team and organization. Buzzword Banishment Buzzword Banishment: Michael's Buzzword to Banish is ‘content is king'. Michael wants to banish this phrase because he believes there are deeper aspects to consider beyond just stating those words. He engages in discussions with companies to explore what content truly means in relation to their industry, company, and audience, emphasizing there's much more to it than the simplified statement. Welcome to the first episode of the Purpose to Impact Series here on Stories from the River. In this episode, Charlie Malouf, Manny Rodrigues, and Heather Greenwood dive into their enriching experiences from a two-day workshop hosted by Broad River Retail and created by Nick Craig of the Core Leader Institute. The workshop, focusing on the Purpose to Impact program, brought together a diverse group of leaders from across the country and a few Memory Makers from Broad River for two days (October 22-23, 2024) in Fort Mill, South Carolina, and was led by Nick Craig along with Davin Salvagno. Charlie, Heather, and Manny found the intimate setting and pre-work exercises beneficial for deep self-reflection. There were a dozen overall leaders who were then put into smaller cohorts of four people each. The smaller group size facilitated candid sharing, enabled the participants to form strong bonds, and minimized passive participation. Each person was encouraged to explore significant life challenges and leadership successes, paving the way for meaningful discussions and authentic connections. Charlie, Heather, and Manny shared personal reflections and takeaways, underscoring the importance of fully engaging with the process. The effective facilitation by Nick and Davin allowed for impactful one-on-one sessions and cohort sharing. The two-day workshop culminates in crystallizing your personal purpose statement. Charlie, Heather, and Manny each revealed their own personal purpose statements that came about through this intensive and reflective workshop. Heather's purpose statement, "To light the spark that ignites greatness in others," resonated with her belief in supporting and inspiring others. Manny's purpose statement, "Illuminating the path one story at a time," echoed his commitment to understanding and sharing stories to help others. Charlie's simplified purpose statement of "Play the game" defines his philosophy and approach to life. The trio emphasized the value of forming deep relationships and the transformative potential of fully participating in the workshop, ultimately advocating for intentional living and continuous personal growth. In a rich dialogue on the Clarity Podcast, Nick Fatato joins Aaron to explore the nuanced dynamics of transformative leadership. At the core of their discussion lies the biblical verse from Acts 13:36, which speaks to the profound desire to fulfill one's God-given purpose. Fatato articulates his commitment to living intentionally, reflecting on how he assesses his own alignment with God's calling. The conversation takes a compelling turn as they examine the metaphor of a sailboat's keel, symbolizing the internal stability required to navigate life's storms. Fatato's insights underscore the necessity of cultivating a deep, resilient inner life through consistent spiritual practices and disciplines. This imagery not only resonates with the challenges leaders face but also emphasizes the importance of grounding oneself to maintain balance amid external pressures.Another pivotal theme in their conversation is the sacrament of friendship and its essential role in leadership. Fatato shares the significance of having trusted confidants who can provide support and encouragement during challenging times. Drawing on the friendship between David and Jonathan, he illustrates how deep relationships tether individuals to their calling and remind them of their worth even in moments of failure. This discussion highlights the need for leaders to foster connections that promote accountability and understanding, particularly in the context of spiritual leadership where the stakes are high. They also tackle the pressing issue of spiritual abuse, advocating for a culture of grace and restoration rather than judgment. Furtado calls for humility in leadership, encouraging listeners to walk alongside those who have stumbled and to recognize the journey toward redemption as a vital aspect of faith. The episode culminates in a reflection on the contemporary challenges faced by leaders in a fast-paced, success-driven world. Fatato warns against the pitfalls of transactional leadership, where metrics often overshadow meaningful relationships. He emphasizes the importance of fostering authentic connections that contribute to long-term effectiveness and impact. By prioritizing soul care and nurturing deep relationships, leaders can cultivate an environment of support and resilience. This episode serves as a profound reminder of the holistic nature of leadership, where personal integrity, relational depth, and a commitment to God's purpose intertwine to create a transformative leadership experience.Takeaways: Transformative leadership is about recognizing God as the senior partner in decision-making. A cumulative life built on spiritual practices can prepare us for life's storms. Friendship is a sacrament, and deep relationships are vital for spiritual leaders. David's quick repentance demonstrates the importance of doing good after doing bad. Soul care and intentional friendships are essential for sustained effectiveness in ministry. The weight of our spiritual lives acts as a keel, stabilizing us amid life's challenges.

Many of my colleagues working in the public sector are skeptical of companies selling products to school districts. I've felt some of this skepticism myself as I've seen certain approaches gain traction because they're well-marketed (yet not evidence-based). So it's understandable to me that people would question the motives of companies selling products; especially in the for-profit space. The elephant in the room, of course, is that Dr. Karen, LLC is a for-profit EdTech company. I've also spent a fair amount of time interacting with people who either work for larger EdTech or curriculum companies, or who have started one themselves. Most of them are therapists, administrators, or teachers who felt inspired to create something who are trying to make a living doing something that matters. This would describe many of the hosts on the Be Podcast Network, which is why I wanted to invite one of the network co-founders, Ross Romano, to De Facto Leaders to talk about his experiences coaching EdTech and education-related start-up founders. Ross Romano has worked with over 100 companies and nonprofit organizations in the education space and collaborated with countless schools, districts, and educators. Ross has created and/or hosted dozens of podcast series, written a number of white papers and ebooks, is a contributing editor to Educate AI Magazine, and has been a contributor to Entrepreneur, The Learning Counsel, edCircuit, Access & Equity PreK-12, and more.Ross serves on the advisory boards for Shenandoah University's Transformative Leadership program and Morning Brew Learning. In 2023, he was listed as a Top 10 leadership coach of the year and was profiled by CIO Views as one of the visionary leaders transforming education. In this conversation, we discuss:✅Business advice that creates ethical dilemmas for companies selling products to school districts.✅Can companies stand for equity without sacrificing product quality and customer service? ✅Who is the true end-user when products are sold to schools?✅When a product isn't resulting in increased student outcomes, is it really just about the quality of the product? ✅Who is making purchasing decisions for schools, and what matters to them?
