Speed, complexity and rapid change is part of the topics covered in Leading at the Quantum Edge. Vince Gennaro is the founder of NYU's Lab for Transformative Leadership, former Pepsico executive, courageously challenging how decision makers should make clear, cogent decisions while engendering trust. Learn about mechanisms we can build into the leadership process to slow down, digest and metabolize, while building a cognitive agility muscle.   You may be surprised at Vince's approach to thinking outloud mixed with position, movement and thinking. Hear about "learning as an observer/participant." How are we supposed to react to pieces of information? And how do we develop "signal discipline" allowing in information that is relevant and timely. Build capacity to absorb uncertainty. If you can stay in it, you are more likely to uncover something that has never been accomplished before. For more information on Leading at the Quantum Edge visit Vince Gennaro on Linked In.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Continuing the excitement of the Eccles Business Buzz podcast's tenth season, host Frances Johnson talks with Clark Ivory, CEO of Ivory Homes, Utah's Number One Homebuilder since 1988. Clark will also be inducted into the David Eccles School of Business Hall of Fame this spring. The Ivory companies have built more than 25,000 homes and 4,000 apartments. Clark has also held civic leadership roles and helped launch efforts including the Utah Impact Partnership, Utah Preservation Fund, and Utah Community Builders. He and his wife Christine have funded 4,000+ scholarships, established the Ivory University House (housing 623 students with proceeds supporting scholarships, internships, and stipends), and cofounded Ivory Innovations with their daughter Abby to address housing challenges via the Ivory Prize and affordable housing projects. Clark links education—especially literacy, citing only 50% of Utah third graders currently reading at grade level—to upward mobility, homelessness, and workforce needs. He also outlines his vision-goals-plan-accountability “success formula;” and emphasizes resilience, principles, and incremental growth through setbacks and market uncertainty.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University.fm.Eccles Business Buzz is proud to be selected by FeedSpot as one of the Top 70 Business School podcasts on the web. It's just so nice to be able to get together, collaborate, bring all the resources to bear, get the Gardner Institute looking at things critically, coming up with a new approach to governance for the state, which we did, and then nominating the right people to help lead out. And I think we're actually going to make some headway with homelessness. There's a lot of people contributing, but it's amazing how we've been able to get a much higher level of expertise in understanding the challenge and what can have a long-term impact that will actually move the needle instead of just throwing money at a problem or, you know, not ever measuring outcomes or understanding that we have to maybe re-look at the entire system and what's broken. What the Ivory success formula means to Clark [15:40] I just had opportunity after opportunity to do little things, and I had this view and this vision that I could become something. And I had this idea that maybe someday I'd go to a really top-notch business school. And that's the vision. And you always need to have a longer-term vision. And then if you do, it's easier to focus on goals that are one year or five year, and then you work harder to achieve your plans that you put together. So, that's been a process that I've shared with every organization I've been in and with all of my Ivory team members. And I ask them to share their success formula every year. And I always tell them, you know, "If you don't like my success formula, don't use it, but have your own." And the important thing is that you do have a great big vision of where you want to go, and then you aren't afraid to set goals. I always told all my kids, "It's always important to have goals, but you can change them anytime you want when they don't make sense, because circumstances change." You have to be able to be resilient and still be positive and say, "Okay, this has been ruled out, but now what is my goal? How am I going to adapt? What am I going to do differently?" And so, this has become part of our ethos at Ivory Homes and with Ivory Innovations and every organization I'm working with. How Clark views affordable housing as key to economic growth [36:57] If we can create great neighborhoods that really have a lot of people prospering, you know, people are so much more likely to graduate from high school, go on to college, have higher incomes, et cetera. And some of the zip codes and neighborhoods in the state are more challenged. And I love the fact that the University of Utah is really investing in the west side of the valley now, with this new hospital project that's going to get started soon. And we've also looked at neighborhoods out there and where we can really make a difference. I think we, like you have said earlier, we have to look a little bit earlier in the process of, you know, an individual's growth. And the earlier we can help them, the better. And then, of course, they're likely to avoid a lot of the pitfalls of life if they do get off to the right start. We're not going to be able to do it everywhere as a state, or we are not going to be able to do it in our own communities, but we all need to be heading in that direction.Show Links:Clark Ivory | LinkedInIvory Homes | WebsiteIvory Foundation | WebsiteClark Ivory encourages Rising Business Leaders to be driven by principles and impact | ArticleDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) | InstagramUndergraduate Scholars ProgramsRising Business LeadersEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) | Instagram Eccles Experience Magazine

Capital for Good
Anthony W. Marx, President and CEO, The New York Public Library: Master Class in Transformative Leadership

Capital for Good

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2026 52:57

In this episode of Capital for Good, we speak with Tony Marx, the president and CEO of the New York Public Library, the nation's largest library system and the world's preeminent public research library. Marx's reimagination of this storied institution builds on his transformative leadership in higher education when he served as president of Amherst College. A distinguished scholar and political scientist, Marx's education — in the power of education — was forged by his experience in South Africa in the 1980s. We begin this wide ranging conversation with Marx's beginnings: his childhood in New York City's Inwood neighborhood, high school at Bronx Science, the intellectual care and attention he received from professors at Wesleyan and Yale, and his early passion for political science, inspired by his involvement in the anti-apartheid movements on campus and the "excitement of being involved in something bigger than myself, and thinking about social justice at scale." Marx would soon move to South Africa, where he helped create Khanya College, a free, residential liberal arts college for Black South Africans to prepare them for entry and success in the country's top universities, where they had long been excluded. Marx notes that his years in South Africa were "life changing," allowing him to live and work with "people who were living and dying for the rights of democracy that we take for granted," and teaching him how one year of high-quality education at Khanya could "undo" twelve years of a stunting K-12 system. "The power of the human mind, the power of education to feed the human mind, should never be underestimated," Marx says. These lessons would define his career and life's work. Back in New York, Marx's scholarship on Africa and questions of nationalism earned him tenure at Columbia, where he and his family spent thirteen fruitful years. Without extensive administrative experience or ties to Amherst, Marx was surprised to find himself a serious candidate in the presidential search of the country's leading liberal arts college, but soon discovered that Amherst's board was ready to lean into change from its position of strength. "When you're at the top of the game is when you should take risk," Marx believes. "It's a wild way of thinking, but it's the right way of thinking, but nobody thinks that way." With the board's support, Marx undertook a number of groundbreaking initiatives that would make Amherst an even stronger institution; he is best known for his efforts to increase significantly the economic diversity of the student body, improving the school's racial diversity, and academic standing, in the process.   In 2010, the New York Public Library came calling. Marx saw in the library's unusual combination of assets — a branch system that served millions of people in person each year (the most trusted and visited civic institution in the city) and the world's most used public research library — a 130-year-old educational institution ripe for "innovation at scale." Over fifteen years, Marx and his colleagues have invested significantly in the branch libraries, transmuting them into community centers, which today are, after the schools and CUNY, the city's largest provider of educational services, all free, from early literacy and career training to English language and technology instruction. In Inwood, Marx's childhood branch, the NYPL has partnered with various public development agencies and philanthropies to build 175 units of affordable housing atop a new library and community center, a model they are pursuing at other sites across the city. In wifi "deserts," the team has worked with internet service providers to beam broadband from local libraries into the neighborhoods. Technology has also been crucial to expanding global access to the research libraries, starting with vast and copyright-respecting digitization efforts. "The notion is that every book ever written should be available to anyone on the planet for free through their library — that's the aspiration and we're building it," Marx proclaims. He has not shied away from the promise of artificial intelligence to support this work, if AI can be harnessed in ways consistent with the institution's values including "privacy, veracity, and respect." "Even more than books, trust is our greatest asset" Marx says. He therefore holds that institutions like the New York Public Library have a role to play in shaping the responsible evolution of these new technologies, and to ensure equitable access to information and knowledge. "It all goes back to the same lesson I learned in South Africa… that the world learned in the Enlightenment," he concludes. "We have to respect everyone. We have to be compassionate towards everyone. We have to understand that everyone has the capacity to learn, to create, to inspire, to inspire others, to have empathy, so that we can live in the world we want to live in." Breakfast Leadership
Shaping Culture, Leading Through Change, and Navigating Tricky Times with Jitske Kramer

Breakfast Leadership

Creating Organizational Cultures That Actually Work In this episode, Michael and cultural anthropologist Jitske Kramer dive deep into the heart of organizational culture. Michael shares a story from a startup he supported, where a crystal clear sense of purpose created unity, loyalty, and a genuine feeling of belonging. Employees stayed because they felt connected to something bigger than a job description. Jitske expands on this by highlighting how leaders shape culture through the behaviors, values, and norms they model. She stresses that culture is never an accident. It is a series of daily choices and conversations. When leaders fail to engage with their teams or invite them into meaningful decision making, organizations lose clarity and people lose their sense of belonging. Both Michael and Jitske agree that leaders miss countless opportunities to build trust simply because they are not intentionally engaging with their people. Transformative Leadership and the Power of Human Connection Michael brings up a powerful metaphor involving an orchestra conductor to show how communication and knowledge flow can transform the relationship between leaders and their teams. When the conductor shifts from directing to connecting, the entire ensemble transforms. The energy changes. People take ownership. Collaboration becomes natural rather than forced. Jitske builds on this idea by contrasting transactional interactions with transformative ones. Transactional moments keep the lights on, but transformative moments build the future. She emphasizes the need for what she calls campfire conversations. These are the unhurried, human centered discussions where ideas form, trust deepens, and innovation actually has space to emerge. They conclude that the most successful organizations are the ones that prioritize human to human connection over rigid systems and corporate scripts. Finding Clarity in the Messy Middle of Change Jitske introduces her latest book, Tricky Times, which explores liminality. Liminality refers to the messy middle stage of change when the old story no longer works and the new story is not yet formed. She describes this phase as uncomfortable but deeply necessary. She explains that societies worldwide are wrestling with a kind of midlife crisis. People are questioning the expectation of nonstop economic growth and the conflict it creates with environmental and social realities. In these liminal spaces, power dynamics shift. Cultural identities get rewritten. Leaders are challenged to redefine what truly matters. Michael shares how timely these insights feel, especially given the current political climate in the United States and abroad. He highlights how difficult but essential conversations shape whether we move forward with intention or stay stuck in old patterns. Leading with Courage in Tricky Times Jitske describes the leadership challenges she writes about in Tricky Times. She warns against leaders who act like tricksters, constantly pushing boundaries without offering guidance or stability. True leadership requires bold honesty, grounded decision making, and the willingness to enter uncomfortable conversations. She emphasizes that balanced leadership is essential. Leaders must be willing to question assumptions, tell the truth about what is working and what is not, and invite their organizations into deeper reflection. Tricky Times has become a bestseller in the Netherlands, and Jitske is sharing its message with influential political leaders who are navigating uncertainty on a national scale. The book is available as an e-book on Amazon and offers a grounded, human centered framework for leading through cultural transformation. Jitske Kramer is a renowned Dutch corporate anthropologist who translates real-world lessons from communities around the globe into practical tools for modern workplaces.    She travels the world to learn from traditional healers, innovators, random passers-by, and everyday communities, studying how humans bond, lead, and resolve conflict — and brings those insights into the boardroom.   Her latest book, Tricky Times (a #1 Dutch bestseller), explores what it takes to lead in “the messy middle” — those uncertain in-between phases where old systems break down before new ones emerge.    With 25+ years of experience, she has shaped transformation for Nike, Unilever, Calvin Klein, and Philips, authored 9 bestselling books (150,000+ copies sold), and spoken alongside Simon Sinek, Amy Edmondson, Yuval Noah Harari on stages like TEDx and Workhuman Live.   Jitske's sharp, funny, and “aha”-filled style makes anthropology highly accessible for leaders facing change, culture challenges, and transformation.   Topics:  The messy middle: Leading effectively through uncertainty and liminal times The real drivers of company culture: Rituals, symbols, and hidden power structures How to “think like an anthropologist” to sense change and spot unseen dynamics The difference between formal power and cultural power — and why rank-awareness is critical for leaders What tribes can teach today's organizations about handling dilemmas and conflict   More about Jitske:  Founder of HumanDimensions, a pioneering training company that helps organizations strengthen teamwork and company culture.  Featured in the Patterns of Life documentary series, in which she traveled to India as an anthropologist.  Former Fellow at the Oxford Leadership Academy; holds a master's degree in cultural anthropology from Utrecht University.  Other books by Jitske: Building Tribes, Wow! What a Difference, Work Has Left the Building, Jam Cultures, andThe Corporate Tribe (which won the prestigious 2016 Management book of the Year Award). Take a look at Jitske's keynotes, other public speeches, TV appearances, and writings.    To get a sense of Jitske, here's an appearance she made on The Culture Lab podcast, talking about the making of a corporate tribe and how to effectively deal with diversity in a team.

Who doesn't love a roadmap or a step-by-step blueprint to get from Point A to Point B?!  Sometimes, as we are just going about our daily lives, we don't realize that we are, in fact, following a path without even realizing it.  As I've been helping leaders build out intentional journeys in growth over the last few years, I've realized a handful of key steps that come together to create a powerful roadmap to leadership success.  When your path to leadership success is intentional rather than accidental, you position yourself for unshakable long-term success and legacy building.   I am in the process of more publicly sharing the leadership pathway I've been guiding my coaching clients on.  In this episode, I'm finally sharing my Shameless Leadership Ascent, a four-part roadmap to your leadership success. After seeing too many leaders with inadequate leadership development opportunities, I realized how much is being left on the table when leaders aren't given specific growth opportunities.  I see leaders with so much untapped potential on the constant verge of burnout because they haven't built a proper foundation from which to lead.  In my Shameless Leadership Ascent, I break down the four stages every leader needs to move through to build a leadership legacy that lives long beyond your current role: Awaken (how you see yourself), Amplify (how you share yourself), Advocate (how you bring others with you), and Advise (how you grow others). Listen in as I walk you through each stage so you can see exactly how to build your leadership legacy in a clear and conscientious way.   When leaders have a foundation of high self-awareness, strong emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of their opportunity to influence others in a positive way, they build high retention cultures that are wildly innovative, engaged, and energized.   In contrast, when leaders ascend too fast without doing the foundational work, they lead from their ego instead of wisdom - gatekeeping, relying on authority over trusting relationships, hoarding opportunities instead of opening doors, and perpetuating the toxic work environments.  These leaders create high turnover, high burnout cultures that are devoid of trust, motivation, and engagement.  While these cultures are often masked as “high-performance”, they are commonly rife with fear and dissatisfaction to the point that many employees are constantly planning their exit strategies.   Whether you're doing your own leadership development work or you're responsible for building leadership capacity in your organization, the Shameless Leadership Ascent is your roadmap to sustainable, transformative leadership. What happens when we strip away the labels that divide us and start genuinely seeing each other? Karen Holliday, transformational leader and faith-based business consultant, joins us for a soul-stirring conversation about authentic connection in an increasingly fragmented world.Karen's journey begins with profound loss—her father's death when she was seven, followed by her mother's necessary absence as she worked to support the family. Left to essentially raise themselves, Karen and her brothers navigated childhood without parental guidance. This early adversity could have hardened her heart, but instead became the foundation for her remarkable capacity to connect with others across differences. The conversation explores the strange contradiction in human nature: we celebrate underdog stories and triumph over adversity in our entertainment, yet desperately avoid challenges in our own lives. Karen brings wisdom from her experience moving to Salt Lake City, where as a non-LDS person in a predominantly Mormon community, she chose understanding over judgment. Rather than remaining defensive about differences, she created bridges by genuinely seeking to understand others' worlds—a practice she now teaches clients facing personal and professional barriers. Some of the most moving moments come when Karen discusses family reconciliation. After decades of estrangement, she approached her mother with courage and boundaries: "I don't think you were a good mother at all... but I would like my children to have a grandmother." This brave conversation led to fifteen years of beautiful friendship before her mother's passing—a powerful testament to the healing possibilities when we choose connection over resentment.Whether you're facing professional challenges, personal roadblocks, or simply feeling disconnected in today's divided culture, Karen's approach offers a refreshingly simple starting point: "What does tomorrow look like for you?" This question pulls us out of today's pain and opens doors to possibility thinking—sometimes exactly what we need when hope seems lost.Ready to break down the walls in your life? Emotional Intelligence–or EQ is now more vital than ever. In today's episode of The Unbeatable Mind, Mark's daughter Catherine is sitting down for a candid and insightful discussion about emotional development and the evolving landscape of leadership in a world that's becoming more dominated by AI.    Catherine and Mark explore the limitations of traditional leadership models that prioritize IQ over EQ, touching on how emotional awareness, self-control, and the oft-overlooked concept of “us” in relationships are fundamental aspects of effective leadership. Drawing from their personal experiences, Mark and Catherine dissect the energy of emotions, the mind-body connection, and the importance of radical self-acceptance.    Together, Mark and Catherine emphasize that real growth does not happen in isolation, it's our most challenging interactions through the emotional landscape that we become better leaders, teammates, and people.    Key Takeaways:  Relational Development: Discover how the most impactful growth happens not in isolation, but through relationships. Real emotional development is tested through authentic connection and mutual vulnerability.  EQ VS. IQ: Learn why Mark and Catherine believe EQ is the leadership superpower of the future. When machines can outperform us in data and logic, our unique advantage lies in self-awareness, empathy, and connection.  The Body-Mind Connection: Understand how acknowledging the somatic side of your feelings can unlock deep growth and healing. Emotions are simply energy in motion—the body plays a key role.  EQ as a Daily Practice: Recognize how emotional maturity is not a destination—but rather a lifelong journey that requires mindfulness, honest communication, and vulnerability.    Catherine Divine is a leadership coach, author, and yoga instructor with over 20 years of experience helping leaders unlock their full potential. Coauthor of Kokoro Yoga with her stepfather, Mark Divine, and author of Sacred Silence, Catherine holds a Master's in Transformative Leadership from CIIS and is pursuing a PhD in East-West Psychology. Her work with leaders from 68 countries provides unique cultural perspectives that can inspire actionable changes within workplace environments. Innovative Approaches to Resilience and Inclusivity: Monika's innovative methodologies, including the use of LEGO® Serious Play in her coaching, align perfectly with the Breakfast Leadership Show's focus on personal growth and mental resilience. Her passion for cultural diversity and inclusion is poised to offer listeners fresh strategies for fostering inclusive workplaces and enhancing overall well-being. Website:  https://monikaguzek.com/ LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/monika-guzek/ Courses:  https://monikaguzek.com/sklep/   Navigating Challenges and Embracing Diversity Monika and I dove into the tough realities of today's world—everything from the lingering effects of the pandemic and global conflicts to economic struggles and shifting governments. One of the biggest challenges we see? The decline of joy in the workplace. Monika pointed out that the blending of personal and corporate life plays a huge role in this. She stressed the importance of embracing cultural and generational diversity, with leaders stepping up to empower their teams and create truly inclusive environments. We also explored how social skills are critical in today's workplace—many people feel overwhelmed and struggle to manage their workload effectively. Embracing Diverse Communication and Cultural Nuances Communication in a diverse workplace isn't just about words—it's about understanding the meaning behind them. Monika emphasized the need to strike a balance between positivity and tough conversations, as well as the importance of reading between the lines in different cultural contexts. I completely agreed. Clear communication is key, but so is recognizing cultural nuances. Personally, I appreciate direct communication and love using humor as a tool—even if it doesn't always land perfectly. We both agreed that embracing these differences leads to stronger collaboration and better teamwork. Fostering a Healthy Workplace Culture We also explored what it takes to build a thriving workplace culture—one where people feel connected and supported. Monika highlighted the importance of playfulness and fun at work, even bringing up how something as simple as Lego can spark creativity. That said, there's a balance—some industries require a more structured approach. We also touched on the insights from The Culture Map, discussing how different cultural dimensions influence workplace interactions. At the end of the day, considering different perspectives makes for a more productive and enjoyable work environment. Building Trust in Diverse Workplaces Trust is the foundation of any great workplace. When leaders and employees trust each other, they can create better products and services that make a real impact. I emphasized how crucial it is for leaders to foster that trust—because without it, everything else falls apart. Monika added that trust-building requires awareness of cultural differences and individual needs. It's all about open communication, self-awareness, and a conscious approach to understanding those we work with. When we get this right, we create workplaces where people feel valued, heard, and truly connected.
