Knowing why your beer tastes like it does is imperative, in all parts of the chain. In this podcast, part of our Digital Takeover on quality control and analysis, our contributing editor Melissa Cole chairs a panel discussion with figures from the brewing industry whose roles revolve around ensuring quality and extolling the virtues of this to the wider world. As SHE Compliance Manager at Beavertown Brewery, Jessica Maye looks after all things health & safety, food safety and environment & sustainability across their London sites. Previously a quality & compliance manager at Fourpure, and a PhD candidate at Queen's University Belfast, Jessica's role at Beavertown Brewery as SHE Compliance Manager has allowed her to continue to develop and grow her expertise in Food Safety, in addition to responsibilities such as taking on artwork and label sign off. During this discussion she is joined by Tanya Kondratyuk, formerly quality manager at Leeds-based Northern Monk and also Amber Thorne. Having started her career in beer in the sales team at Siren Craft Brew, Amber has since moved to the iconic Bristol beer scene working with Good Chemistry and is now the Customer Account Manager at Arbor Ales. During this episode they discuss how best to ensure the flow of essential information travels from brewhouse, to quality assurance right through to taprooms and sales - and how that flow really needs to go both ways! As Melissa says, this way everyone feels empowered, every step of the way to offer valuable feedback and information.
We head back to Lund this episode for a trip to Inferno. This was the premiere craft beer bar in Lund for years. Sadly, they have scaled back on their selection. You can still find lots of interesting bottles and can but the taplist has become a tap pedestrian. We tried two beers on tap. Normally I would go into the beers at this point but we both felt the taps weren't clean the beers were off. We had Fourpure British Red Ale and New Belgium Hazy Voodoo Ranger. It's hard to recommend either based off what we tasted. Maybe we'll try them again one day and give a proper rating. If you do get to visit Inferno, it's still a nice beer bar with loads of character, just maybe stick to the bottles and cans. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #redale #ipa #newbelgium #fourpure #inferno #lund

Cannonball Run? Or Cannonball Done? In this episode of the Points of Brew podcast, Stephen and Aaron digest the news that Lion is selling Magic Rock and Fourpure to Odyssey Inns with immediate effect. They also drink and rate the recently released 2022 Cannonball Run beers alongside the original and try to stay relatively sensible along the way, despite their ABV. The pair also discuss Magic Rock's place in the current beer scene, where it could be heading and if this new ownership could be a return to form for them. The three Cannonball specials were provided to the show by Magic Rock directly however this did not influence their reception or the opinions given during this show. Thanks to Magic Rock for sending the beers out ahead of the show being recorded. If you enjoy the Points of Brew podcast, please let us know on pointsofbrew@gmail.com
Speaking of Katie Mather as both a peer, and as a friend, she is someone who continually impresses me. I first came across her work through her old blog, called The Snap and The Hiss, and was enamoured with her writing from the very first sentence. Since then she's gone from strength to strength, producing a series of wonderfully evocative articles, and taking on editorial roles both at new wine publication Glug and here at Pellicle.Having her on board as a regular contributor alone was a thrill, and if you read her pieces such as this one on the nostalgia of burger vans, or her epic taxonomy of the British bread roll (the most read feature we've ever published) you'll soon understand why. Taking her on as an associate editor deepened her connection to the work we publish. What editors do largely happens behind the curtain, but you can see her influence on pieces such as Josh Barrie's profile of a very special branch of Londis in North London, or in my own feature about Sheffield's Brewery of St. Mars of the Desert. We are so stoked to get to work with her, and can't wait to see what else she brings to our little magazine. But the depth of Katie's talents don't end there. In late 2019, she and her husband Tom finally got the keys to their bar, Corto. Based in their hometown of Clitheroe, situated in Lancashire's Ribble Valley, Corto is part of a new wave of bars slowly emerging within the United Kingdom. Inspired by the food and drink culture of Northern Spain, the bar merges the concepts of craft beer, natural wine, cider and delectable small plates into something that is far greater than the sum of its parts. I'm biased, but you should visit. You'll be planning your next trip there before you've got halfway through your first pint, or whatever's by the glass on that particular day.As a bonus, before the interview I dig into some of the bigger beer news that's occurred lately. From Monster acquiring the Canarchy collective of breweries in the United States, to Lion announcing it is to sell UK acquisitions Fourpure and Magic Rock, there's a lot to dig into. And that's before I take the chance to chew through the BBC's recent documentary on Scottish brewery BrewDog, and why I think its behaviour reflects badly on the entire British craft beer scene. It's a bumper episode, and I hope you enjoy listening. Don't forget to hit subscribe and leave a rating if you've got a second, as this will help more folks find the show. You might also see we've got a new logo thanks to our resident designer Tida Bradshaw. It felt like it was time to give the podcast a little spruce up, so we hope you like that. Pressure Drop may have been founded during the early days of London’s brewing renaissance, but its trajectory has been very different to many of its compatriots. While other UK breweries of the same age—the likes of Beavertown, Five Points, and Fourpure—expanded rapidly, putting together sales teams, attending trade shows and contract brewing overseas to hit demand, Pressure Drop’s founders have chosen to grow slowly and organically even when the opportunity to explode seemed in reach. Back in 2013 their flagship beer, Pale Fire, was probably the most sought-after Pale Ale in London and way ahead of its time. Even though the recipe changed frequently, its reliably soft wheat body, haze, and juicy aroma was unlike anything else on the bar, a precursor of what would become the New England craze. It was so talked about that some people thought Pale Fire was the the name of a brewery, not a beer. It still amazes me that some of the seminal Pale Fire I drank back then was made on a 50L homebrew kit in a shed in Hackney. Even in 2016 they were still brewing on a five-barrel brewhouse down a dingy side road in East London. At this site they were only able to dedicate around 30% of their volume to the more idiosyncratic beers that had got them excited about brewing in the first place—beers like their Wugang Chops the Tree, their foraged-herb Hefeweiss and Nanban Kampai, a yuzu wheat IPA. I met Ben Freeman and Graham O’Brien at the Experiment, a taproom they opened in that archway after moving the brewery out. A much bigger expansion in 2016 has given them more tank space to play around, leading to a belated move into true New England brewing and canning, as well as putting them next door to Beavertown, where the brewery stands proud as a symbol of their different way of doing things.
More experiments this week as Martin & Steve tuck into a load of adjunct-filled beers and try their food counterparts to see if they actually taste like the things they are supposed to taste like. The unstoppable rise in the popularity of craft beer has seen major brewers muscle in on the action, with Heineken's recent investment in Beavertown, and a subsidiary of Kirin acquiring Fourpure. But getting in to bed with "big beer" poses a dilemma for many small brewers who value their independence, with some opting for private equity investment instead. Over a few beers, Julie-Anna Needham discusses the matter with managing editor John West and consumer reporter Deane McRobie.
On July 9, 2018, Fourpure Brewing Company's co-founders, Dan and Tom Lowe announced that the brewery had been sold to Australia's Lion group. On today’s episode I’m joined by Jez Galaun and Xochitl Benjamin, two of the four founders behind South London’s Brixton Brewery. Six months previously, I had sat down for a brief chat with the same pair, before GBH broke the news that the brewery had sold a minority stake of 49% to Heineken. Now that the dust kicked up by that announcement has had the chance to settle I wanted to catch up with Galaun and Benjamin to find out how things had been going for the brewery post investment. Brixton was the latest in a string of acquisitions and investments that demonstrated an increasing trend in the interest in the London beer market from some of the industry’s biggest players. We saw SABMiller purchase Meantime Brewery back in May 2015, before it was subsequently sold on to Asahi following SAB’s merger with Anheuser Busch-InBev, a year later. In December 2015 AB-InBev’s ZX Ventures investment arm acquired Camden Town Brewery, before also investing in its purpose built £30 million brewing facility in Enfield, North London. Denmark’s Carlsberg also entered the fray in July 2017, when it purchased the struggling London Fields Brewery, in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery—the latter adding London Fields to its growing empire of international brewpubs. Heineken’s investment in Brixton a few months later only further served to demonstrate that London’s breweries are hot property. This investment means that like Camden, Brixton will be able to expand into a larger facility, although on nowhere near the same scale. At its existing facility under the arches near Brixton Station—which the brewery has called home since it was founded in 2013—it was producing almost 3000hl (around 2500 US bbls) per year. When commissioned later this year, the new facility will allow Brixton to produce ten times this amount annually. But this will still keep them under the volumes of several other London breweries, including smaller independents like Beavertown and Fourpure. The new site will also be located in the heart of Brixton itself, just 600 meters from the existing location as the crow flies. Galaun, Benjamin and I unpack the importance of this during the course of our conversation. We also discuss how the London scene is still undergoing dramatic change and whether or not that Heineken stake is evidence of an eventual path to control, as it was when they acquired Lagunitas.
It's April 2018, and we're in Bermondsey documenting life at the Fourpure brewery. In this episode, we hear from our Dear Leader Dan Lowe to find out how his day pans out. We speak to new(ish) starters Neil and Julio, and Will joins the two-year club with aplomb and a mystery beer. Ollie talks through a frankly delicious beer, a tonka bean white stout (really!). It's a good one - listen in.
After cleaning up the party poppers and finishing the cake, the Fourpure Podcast looks back the February's brewery and taproom launch. Nick and Jo feature in our 'New Starters' section and Katie fills us in on what plans new social committee have. Phil is our 'Day in a 'Life' contributor (worth a listen to find out about a remarkable company he also runs) and we hear from Reid who joins our 'Two-Year Club'. It's a good 'un. Tune in.
Fourpure Podcast Episode 15 - January 2018 by Fourpure Brewing Co.
Fuller Smith & Turner—or Fuller’s as it’s more commonly known—is the oldest surviving brewery in London, as well as being one of its largest. Fuller’s has been brewing at The Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, West London, for more than 160 years. The face of the British brewing industry has undergone tremendous change many times over during the course of its existence. Now, in 2018, the brewery faces fresh challenges. For instance, finding relevance in a market that constantly craves the rare and the new, while still championing traditional styles in an age of Hazy IPAs and Pastry Stouts. Surprisingly, this hasn’t phased Fuller’s one bit. Along with some of the UK’s other historical breweries, such as Adnams in Suffolk and Harvey’s in Sussex, Fuller’s is ensuring that styles such as Porter and ESB remain as relevant to the beer market as ever. Behind it all is the ebullient Brewing Director, John Keeling, who has been employed by Fuller’s for 37 years. Keeling has worked in the brewing industry since the 1970s, initially for the now-defunct Watney’s, then studying brewing science at Heriot Watt University before finally settling at Fuller’s. He became Head Brewer in 1999, a role he passed on to Fuller’s current Head Brewer Georgina Young in January 2017. Over this time he’s witnessed Fuller’s shift from being a completely manually operated brewery, to one that is almost entirely automated and state of the art. Keeling has been instrumental in ensuring that Fuller’s legacy be preserved. Be it by reviving historical recipes from the archives, by collaborating with the UK’s latest crop of brewers such as Fourpure and Cloudwater, or by constantly championing the simple pleasures found within a pint of Fuller’s flagship beer, London Pride. In October 2018 Keeling will retire, leaving an illustrious brewing career behind him. The industry won’t be getting rid of him that easily, however, as he’s just been voted chairman of The London Brewers Alliance, a guild that supports the collective interests of London’s independent breweries. Over the next hour we discuss—or perhaps I should say John discusses—subjects ranging from the history of Fuller’s, to the importance of cask ale, to the price of beer, all the way up to his favorite subject: the philosophy of brewing.
This month we welcome Francesco and Peter to the Fourpure team and we speak to Jen to hear "a day in the life of" a quality technician. John talks us through progress on the new brewhouse and about our first Imperial Stout, and Jim covers off some end of year numbers.
The UK’s independent brewing scene is booming. Recent figures from the British Beer and Pub Association put the number of active breweries in the UK at more than 2,000, meaning that the UK has more breweries than any other European nation. At the heart of this growth have been the UK’s metropolitan areas, cities such as London, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol, and many more. But thankfully, that growth hasn’t been restricted to the cities, with more breweries choosing to establish themselves in smaller towns and in rural areas. We’ve even seen established city breweries such as Redchurch in London, start to build production facilities outside of these city hubs. Earlier this year I interviewed Dan Lowe, who co-founded Fourpure Brewing Co. with his brother Tom in 2013. Dan spoke to me about how Fourpure was planning a move similar to Redchurch's, in that they were looking at expanding to a purpose-built brewery on a greenfield site on the outskirts of London. But Fourpure changed its plans (for the time being, at least), choosing to invest more than £2 million ($2.7M) in its existing site in South London. This expansion will involve a new brewhouse, more capacity, and more lab and QC space. Eventually, they’ll also double the size of their taproom. This, along with a whole bunch of other local breweries, including Partizan, Pressure Drop, and Mondo, also investing in their London sites, is indicative that there is still a lot of room here for growth. This growth is also giving newer, smaller breweries a chance to establish themselves too, as the expanding breweries move into other markets, thus freeing up space at the point of entry. Recently, I headed down to Fourpure, at the end of the Bermondsey Beer Mile, to catch up with both Dan and Tom. We talk about everything above and more.

Daniel Addey-Jibb, co-owner and brewer at Le Castor joins us for The Session on this episode. Located about 40 minutes outside of Montreal, Quebec, Dan and his team brew some really amazing farmhouse beers for those lucky enough to find them. Many are aged and bottled with Brett, giving them even more complexity than normal. His core style seems to be Saison, but he switches it up by adding different ingredents, such as Grapefruit zest and cracked peppercorns, sour cherries, oak - all of which are Brett-finished. The beers were great, and Dan was very generous with his time and beer. Then our friends from FourPure out in London happened to be in the studio, and shared their "juicy" IPA with us - which was not cloudy and soupy at all and we thanked them profusely for this.
