Shiner Hill Country Peach Wheat Ale is a Fruited Wheat beer by style. This small batch brew is the eleventh in our Brewer's Pride Series - a what ale brewed with juicy, perfectly ripe peaches from the nearby Texas Hill Country. These peaches, along with a mix of 2-row and wheat malts, make for a slightly sweet, refreshing ale. Badly filtered, this brew has a golden, hazy color and it tastes like it came fresh from the orchard. But it's only around a little while, so pop open a peach and enjoy. This craft beer is 4.5% ABV 15 IBUs. In this craft beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
In yet another unexpected twist of events, this week, we're coming from separate locations, this time due to scheduling conflicts. As such, that means that Erik wasn't able to bring a paired beer for this week's episode, so we've got another 'BYOB' episode, where both of us are drinking what we bring! This time around, Erik is rocking a Double IPA from Fiden's Brewing Company up in Albany, NY, while I brought something out from the depths of my fridge, a Wheat Ale courtesy of Cigar City Brewing company down in Tampa, FL. This time around, we're discussing one of the most influential and iconic horror movies of all time, Ridley Scott's 'Alien' from 1979.So kick back and enjoy our conversation about two of our favorite things: cold beer and scary movies!Follow us on Instagram, and say hi!
Montana is known for its grain, and Mark Hastings of Überbrew (https://uberbrew.beer) and By All Means (https://byallmeansbeer.com) is in the thick of it. Wheat is the most-grown crop statewide while barley is third; despite their ubiquity, Hastings steered clear of Montana's brewing grains for the first two decades of his brewing career. Primarily grown for the needs of macro brewers, these grains never quite nailed the flavor and technical performance he sought. However, recent strides in equipment for craft maltsters have opened the door for higher-quality malt at a smaller scale, and he's slowly been making shifts. It's one thing to change malt in a beer with few expectations, and it's another to do that in a beer with a long medal-winning pedigree, but that's exactly what he did with the malt in Überbrew's White Noise, a American-style wheat beer that's won two silvers and two golds at the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup from 2014 through 2022. He's won a similar number of accolades for the black IPA Alpha Force Double Tap—GABF golds, bronze, silver, as well as top honors at Alpha King. In this episode, Hastings discusses: avoiding darker malt flavors in black IPA shifting base malts from Maris Otter and Golden Promise to pilsner and Vienna dialing in recipes using local craft malt building hop combos using spider plots of flavors and aromas fermenting everything from wheat to clear IPA with London Ale III avoiding the “donut effect” in hoppy beers selecting malt for grassiness in wheat beer building a stable haze And more. It's peak summertime and after the immense success of Rupee's award winning lager nearly two years ago, brothers Van & Sumit Sharma enlisted the strategic insight of global craft brewing legend and creator of iconic Pumpkinhead, one of the most successful seasonal beers to ever hit the market to brew their next highly anticipated sku. "The beer industry, South Asian community, and restaurant & food world have been asking us for months if we have any new beers coming out, and after much thought, research and development, we are excited to launch our signature Mango Wheat Ale on World Mango Day on July 22nd" Mangos are the national fruit of India and considered sacred symbols of proprietary and good luck. In fact, India is the largest consumer and supplier of mangos in the world. Taking the 'King of Fruits' the team wanted to brew an easy to drink summer ale which is smooth with hints of tropical aroma and mango flavor. The history of the mango dates back to 4000 BC on the Indian Subcontinent where over 1000 varieties of the fruit exist. One of these varieties, the Chaunsa mango was given its name by the revolutionary leader, Sultan Sher Shah Suri, creator of the modern day Indian Rupee which was the inspiration of the brand's first lager sku. In 1539, Sultan Sher Shah Suri defeated the second Moghal Emperor, Humayun, in the Battle of Chaunsa. In his extreme happiness, he commemorated the victory by naming his favorite variety of mango, the Chaunsa. After relocating back to America after years living in London & Australia, the brothers having grown up in the Indian restaurant trade their entire lives wanted to shake up an industry which they truly felt lacked representation, and which also continued to make sub-par beer not designed to pair with the spicy and flavorful foods they grew up on. Rupee Beer is available at national retailers such as Costco, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Total Wine, as well as top international restaurants within the Indian, Asian, Middle Eastern and Mexican category. The beer industry and the state of Maine are both such special places to exist, due in large part to the people you meet within them. Both deserve equal credit for bringing this week's IN-STUDIO guest to us - Matthew Bateman. Matt works at Northern Outdoors, an operation in The Forks, ME that includes within it rafting, guiding, camping, and lodging services. Since 1996, the company has also included a brewery - Kennebec River Brewing, located within the Northern Outdoors lodge. The BBB crew recently spent a couple nights on premise for a team getaway, camping a few nights, rafting the Kennebec (water) and thoroughly enjoying drinking Kennebec (beer) on-site. We met Matt as one of our boats' guides, only to find out he has also been cutting his teeth in the brewery since spring. We get into the many things that makes Northern Outdoors such a truly unique (and HIGHLY recommended), and Matt's life as both a whitewater rafting guide and new brewer. He gives us the ins and outs of rafting, talks about some of the craziest water he's ever been on, and defines the new-to-us term, "hydrology". On the beer side, Matt talks about what makes Kennebec River Brewing so unique, touching on how it's bucked the usual brewpub pitfalls, avoided Ringwood in a pre-Y2K Maine, and had been run by ONE GUY (shoutout Mike!) from inception until Matt was brought on six months ago. We also get into his experience going from beer fan to actual brewer, discuss the distinct satisfactions he's taking from it, and mutually lament the punishing heat a brewery comes with. This was an extremely fun one and felt particularly special in its full-circle nature. As you'll hear, we can't recommend the many things Northern Outdoors has to offer enough. Special thanks to Matthew for making the trip to Milo to join the shortlist of in-studio guests, and to all of Northern Outdoors for making our staff trip so special a few weeks ago!

This is the last episode we recorded in the dungeon just before the real serious quarantine hit us here in the MidWest, so there might be some outdated information spoken in this one. We busted out all the disinfectant and lysol wipes we could find, cleaned everything, and stayed at least 6' apart, but we still got to have some fun, and drug ourselves through 13 different beers to boot. Nox needed to clean out his beer fridge, so we took what he had collected the last couple of months, and threw down! In this episode, we review All My Ghosts by Long Live Beerworks, Dragon Fandango by Toppling Goliath, 180 Schilling and Barrel Aged Mountain Standard Double Black IPA from O'Dell Brewing, Thirst Encounters of the Third Kind by Blackstack Brewing, and Revelation Ale Works' Purple Ribbon Pilsner. Drekker came in big with 3 brews: Toon Dip DDH DIP Hopped DIPA (a collab with Fair State Brewing Cooperative), Evil-Natured Robots DIPA, and Chonk Peanut and Jelly Sundae Sour. FInally we end the day with four from Junkyard Brewing. Queen of the Potluck Ambrosia-styled Wheat Ale, Here for the Cake pastry stout (a collab with local women of the brewing industry), Five-Day Rain NEIPA, and the Barrel Aged Wake Up Late stout aged in Willet barrels. Oofda, dat's a lot of beer! If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to e-mail us at brewsboozeandreviews@hotmail.com. Some of the most influential people in the city are not leaders, but connectors. Tiffany Hanson, the Outreach and Engagement Manager at LUNA Language Services and Director of Marketing and Communications for Indy Pride, is a professional advocate for disadvantaged communities. Growing up in Kokomo, Indiana, Tiffany was not presented with a diverse community until she moved to Indianapolis to attend UIndy. Tiffany originally aspired to be a physical therapist, but quickly learned that she was passionate about the power of communications and PR. Now, Tiffany has served on at least seven boards and has moved her full-time career towards advocacy, most notably as an active board member and director for Indy Pride. Tune in to learn about how she has served our sizeable deaf community, how Indy Pride has grown to an organization with paid employees and 13 events a year, and how Tiffany is breaking down barriers for international communities through LUNA Language Services. Marie is a world traveler, Peace Corp survivor, mountain climber, desert hiker, Las Vegas festival wrangler, and an all-around awesome human. And she just so happens to be an agnostic who is really worried that maybe religion and spirituality is real, and now she's going to hell. So to help her cope, we drink Stiegl Radler Grapefruit which is pretty tasty but super low in ABV. Then we have Bell's Brewery Oberon Wheat Ale which was fantastic. At this point in the American beer scene, a love for IPAs, Wheat Ales, Stouts, and Saisons comes from all over. Our friends and parents. Our neighbors and celebrities. When we learn that someone has an adoration for craft beer, there’s not a lot of surprise left to be had, except what kind of beer we can share as part of this fun bond. This spring, I had that debate—between a Wheat Ale and IPA—with the musician and rapper, Fish Scales of Nappy Roots. Scales, whose real name is Melvin Adams Jr., isn’t just accomplished in the world of music, but he and others in the Grammy-nominated group see beer as a next step in their creative journey. They’ve already made collaboration beers with Atlanta’s Monday Night Brewing and Louisville’s Against the Grain Brewery, and I sat down with Scales this spring in Boise, Idaho, where Nappy Roots was performing and releasing a new beer with the city’s Woodland Empire Ale Craft. In recent years, there have been a variety of musicians, groups, actors, and athletes who have gotten into the world of beer. Scales and Nappy Roots are among that growing number, and his appreciation for the history, process, and what he sees beer to be culturally is what’s propelling him toward this love while still performing about 100 times a year. As many conversations have circled around in beer lately, there is a component to this effort to bring craft beer to audiences that were long neglected. We talk about that, the cross-section of music and beer, and so much more, during the course of this conversation. So, what’s the perspective on beer from one of the most successful musicians in America? This is Fish Scales, beer lover and rapper, of Nappy Roots. Listen in.

In this episode, we crack open Bell’s Winter White and open up John chapter 2.Bells Brewing Company is based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. (www.bellsbeer.com).Winter White AleBelgian Witbier - 5.0ABVBells writes of their Winter White: “An alternative to dark and heavy winter warmers and stouts, Winter White is a stylish and refreshing Wheat Ale. Fermented with a Belgian ale yeast, this blend of barley and wheat malts yields a mixture of clove and fruity aromas, all without the use of any spices. Deliberately brewed to retain a cloudy appearance, Winter White is a beer for embracing winter.”John 2www.esv.org/John+2/Beer Rating:– 3.75 out of 5.– The Schuler family beer dispute: Winter White vs Winter Lager.– It’s a great beer. Come of the most enjoyable parts of a Snow Day are having a cocktail hour right at 5pm (you've got nowhere to drive to get there – or after!) and enjoying a beer after a few hours of shoveling snow (or ice/slush). This evening the Baron & Baroness combined both as they tasted two contrasting Wheat Ales from (the most mega) craft brewery – Samuel Adams. Interspersed in our discussion of IBUs, we enjoyed their Cold Snap first, a wheat ale with citrus, spices – including coriander which in some ways we thought of as a grown-up Blue Moon. Then we enjoyed Hopscape, a Wheat Ale with added West Coast hops – which definitely made a difference.
