This weeks podcast starts with a debate about whether we can drink beer at 9am, which is the time that we recorded this episode. Leading to a chat about an other drinks that we might have enjoyed over the years, and what the 'kids' are drinking these days. Ox tells us about how he stops his son from drinking all his drinks in the bar fridge at home. While we're talking drinking, Marko tells the story of being arrested when he first got to the US for driving on the wrong side of the road. We want to find his mugshot from the Lubbock City police department in Texas. Talking mugshots, Ox and Marko chat about the Nick Nolte one, and the Hugh Grant mugshot. Mark cannot believe Hugh Grant was going out with Liz Hurley at the time he did the wrong thing. Ox agrees, and both reckon Liz Hurley has the greatest voice ever.Given they're talking drinks, inevitably Ox and Marko start talking nightclubs; one of their favourite topics, and Marko tells a story about a night out at the New Orleans club in Melbourne in the 90s after 100 drinks which could have derailed his golf career. The pod switches tack then into stupid things we all did when we were younger. Ox talks about a nasty BMX accident caused by him being a muppet as a kid; and Marko talks about bad behaviour in a sponsor-provided car when he was 21 with six passengers in a 2-door car. Ox and Marko want to hear your stories of stupid stuff you did when you were a kid. Let us know on the socials or leave us a voicemail here. Ox tells another story about his mate Eggy who had a nasty incident involved his private parts jumping into a gorge with Ox when they were kids, an incident that still causes Eggy problems 30-years later. We're sympathetic, but it's also very funny. And somehow we end up talking about seagull stories. If you're a seagull lover, maybe fast forward through this part.We get a voicemail from Gav who has a problem on public transport, and poses it as an example of Civil Selfishness. Marko is in vigorous agreement. It leads onto another business idea from Ox, which he thinks will make millions if Village Roadshow take it onboard. Ox then puts our podcast license at risk with an appalling story about Ballarat in Victoria.Mark then raises a personal example of Civil Selfishness involving his and Ox's business, Assembled Media, involving the staff kitchen. Marko's obsession with neatness and cleanliness has caused him to get very worked up and he's not happy. Ox has a second business idea, that he reckons could make millions; this time Marko agrees! Watch this space.Plenty of feedback this week, someone is getting a major whack, we get the results of our Sunnyboy, Glug and Razz poll, and we have feedback from The Mole, one of our fave twitter accounts, on Ox's recent overpriced breakfast at a cafe.Marko tells us how he proposed to Trish. You'd think it would be romantic, you'd be very wrong.Follow a Couple of Blokes, Couple of Beers and get involved with the show on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, or send a voicemail to Ox and Marko here. More about today's guest: If you want to learn more about today's guests, you can by visiting: Valerie Kathawala is a New York-based writer focused on the wines of Germany, Austria, South Tyrol and Switzerland, with a particular interest in biodynamics. Valerie is a lifelong student of German culture and language and has lived and worked in both Germany and Austria. Her crossover from translation and editorial work at the United Nations to writing about wine was a natural, maybe inevitable, confluence of these experiences. Valerie's work appears in the pages of SevenFifty Daily, Pipette, Glug, Meininger's Wine Business International, Pellicle, WineFolly, The Vintner Project, The Cork Report, and Grape Collective. She is a co-founder and co-editor of the wine magazine TRINK. She has taught university students and expats, works with embassies, corporations and private clients, creating and presenting tastings, events, seminars and in-depth courses. Cynthia is a wine writer, translator, and a judge at international wine and sake competitions. Speaking of Katie Mather as both a peer, and as a friend, she is someone who continually impresses me. I first came across her work through her old blog, called The Snap and The Hiss, and was enamoured with her writing from the very first sentence. Since then she's gone from strength to strength, producing a series of wonderfully evocative articles, and taking on editorial roles both at new wine publication Glug and here at Pellicle.Having her on board as a regular contributor alone was a thrill, and if you read her pieces such as this one on the nostalgia of burger vans, or her epic taxonomy of the British bread roll (the most read feature we've ever published) you'll soon understand why. Taking her on as an associate editor deepened her connection to the work we publish. What editors do largely happens behind the curtain, but you can see her influence on pieces such as Josh Barrie's profile of a very special branch of Londis in North London, or in my own feature about Sheffield's Brewery of St. Mars of the Desert. We are so stoked to get to work with her, and can't wait to see what else she brings to our little magazine. But the depth of Katie's talents don't end there. In late 2019, she and her husband Tom finally got the keys to their bar, Corto. Based in their hometown of Clitheroe, situated in Lancashire's Ribble Valley, Corto is part of a new wave of bars slowly emerging within the United Kingdom. Inspired by the food and drink culture of Northern Spain, the bar merges the concepts of craft beer, natural wine, cider and delectable small plates into something that is far greater than the sum of its parts. I'm biased, but you should visit. You'll be planning your next trip there before you've got halfway through your first pint, or whatever's by the glass on that particular day.As a bonus, before the interview I dig into some of the bigger beer news that's occurred lately. From Monster acquiring the Canarchy collective of breweries in the United States, to Lion announcing it is to sell UK acquisitions Fourpure and Magic Rock, there's a lot to dig into. And that's before I take the chance to chew through the BBC's recent documentary on Scottish brewery BrewDog, and why I think its behaviour reflects badly on the entire British craft beer scene. It's a bumper episode, and I hope you enjoy listening. Don't forget to hit subscribe and leave a rating if you've got a second, as this will help more folks find the show. Not much.   Pastor Newms: [1:00] Actually like five years older than me and she isn't like 17 actually. I think you're aren't you like 11 years older.   Pastor Bill: [1:13] I will be definitely not I will be turning 40 in January.   Pastor Newms: [1:22] 11 years older than me yeah cuz I'm only 29 I don't know which time I did I don't know man.   Pastor Bill: [1:38] I know how to count one to skip a few 99 100.   Pastor Newms: [1:50] Nothing it doesn't work three minutes.   Pastor Bill: [2:18] So did you hear they found a case of the Lambda variant in like like I think Louisiana. Somebody's ahead of the Curve.   Pastor Newms: [2:30] No   Pastor Bill: [2:36] Let's go over our Greek letters Alpha Beta Delta Gamma Epsilon Lambda where did Epsilon go.   Pastor Newms: [2:46] Well to be fair.   Pastor Bill: [2:48] Where's the Epsilon variant at?   Pastor Newms: [2:51] To be fair it might just not be here it might be somewhere else in the world.   Pastor Bill: [2:56] S-sure I didn't know we had a beta I never heard of the beta variant, and then they came out with the Delta and I was like whoa what happened we went from from alpha to Delta.   Pastor Newms: [3:26] What do I use Romulan messages for which group uses the Romulan.   Pastor Bill: [3:31] Trade them the Klingons you trade them for Klingon credits.   Pastor Newms: [3:38] Good good good. Because this area that I fight in is you know every few minutes I can get.   Pastor Bill: [3:50] Well it drops every 15 minutes.   [3:58] Unless they changed that part of the algorithm or dropping scouts more often I don't know.   [4:07] Zadie on Twitch yes you are supposed to be able to hear it right now but there is enough for ya there. And you were alone no best friend beside you.   Pastor Newms: [7:22] So we spend too much time together. They just overall and so when you were out of town it was definitely odd and it is true you were Zaidies friend first, it was definitely odd and there were a couple days where I was just like, I'm just going to go to bed because I just wasn't in the mood to.   Pastor Bill: [7:53] I have a visitor.   Pastor Newms: [7:56] Yes hello.   Pastor Bill: [7:57] She's come to ask for cough drops while we're live.   Pastor Newms: [8:01] While we're live to the whole internet.   Pastor Bill: [8:04] Live to the whole internet on Twitter and Facebook and YouTube live with church.   Pastor Newms: [8:10] Here ya go sweetheart.   Pastor Bill: [8:14] Here take this you can't give her a cough drop through the phone give this to your mama.   Pastor Newms: [8:31] We are not sponsored but we really we really should be sponsored by Ricola because.   Pastor Bill: [8:37] Oh man I buy so much Ricola.   Pastor Newms: [8:40] The amount that Pastor Bill uses you know their sugar free ones.   Pastor Bill: [8:47] I've heard.   Pastor Newms: [8:49] I don't say that these ones don't have much sugar but because of Seraphina's, issues with sugar, her sugar allergy we were looking for ones and we happen to cross them and we were like, what and she loves them and they're just hers and she makes sure everyone knows they're just hers fructos Malabsorption.   Pastor Bill: [9:21] Huh.   Pastor Newms: [9:22] That's that's what she technically has Zaidie just posted it in the, but I can't speak English well so when we start going to the root words of and can't do it but so that was weird the fact that you were gone for the majority of the week was odd Phoenix has been in a lot of pain recently, HP Phoenix and she decided to finally get in for a particular doctor's appointment and got scheduled for her HIDA scan to which the doctor that, did the HIDA scan the HIDA scan checks to see how functioning your gallbladder is.   [10:09] But it checks that and, the doctor that ordered the scan then told her the day they got her results that she immediately had to go see a surgeon the next day when the she saw the surgeon the surgeon said well we're going to do the operation at 11, so on Friday she went in for emergency surgery meanwhile, her puppy dog ended up with a double ear infection that I had to take her to the vet for yesterday so that unit inside our family unit had a really rough week and, but they're both feeling much much better, HP Phoenix actually left the house today which was good we went over to my mother's so to have a delicious lunch of.   Pastor Bill: [11:07] Launch.   Pastor Newms: [11:08] Love roast, I love roast potatoes and carrots it's like my favorite meal and it's not like a complicated meal that's the thing, like you know you ask people what's your favorite meal well I prefer this with this this like roast potatoes and carrots in a Crock-Pot, and I put.   Pastor Bill: [11:31] I like to enjoy Tomatoes particularly be sun-dried on the hills of Tuscany and like to take those and cook those in some olive oil.   Pastor Newms: [11:40] I'm like I'm like I'd like some carrots some peeled potatoes and a cow but in some water with some spices and and that's my.   Pastor Bill: [11:54] I'm no better I'm no better chop up a potato some potato chop up some weenies and fried up in some olive oil put some salt on there mmm.   [12:15] It's my week was good you know I just got over all this sickness which unfortunately now Roxanne is trying to struggle with her. Fried we did we do.   Pastor Newms: [12:29] Weenies hot dogs he said hot dogs.   Pastor Bill: [12:33] I didn't say Wheaties as I said weenies hot dog means. Hebrew National kosher cut pieces of beef inside of collagen tubes.   [12:53] So I shouldn't have eaten before we went live it's aggravated my sinus drainage so now I'm coughing more than I was before I before I ate dinner I made a mistake.   Pastor Newms: [13:02] Yeah because you were you were pretty fine beforehand so that was that was a boo-boo.   Pastor Bill: [13:08] It aggrivated my esophagus all right oh yeah so we went on a little family vacation down to Lake Livingston in Onalaska Texas got an Airbnb, I spent four days three nights, there was a nice little fire pit we did s'mores I cooked some steaks went out on the water and some little canoe, which I mean it was exhausting and from having to row the canoes but not else kind of fun, um but it was just you know some good time to disconnect from all this technology stuff and, just spend some time with the family one-on-one before Gerg starts school on Tuesday, His first day of public school ninth grade so that's exciting so that's basically what my we close. We still chatted some on text and, so up I still played I still put on the world started yet I still played the game.   Pastor Newms: [14:28] Yes I know.   Pastor Bill: [14:31] The war will only start if certain conditions aren't met.   Pastor Newms: [14:37] Aha yeah.   Pastor Bill: [14:39] You and I both know they're not going to meet those conditions.   Pastor Newms: [14:42] Now we're going to war next week I mean that's just a thing.   Pastor Bill: [14:44] Are we going to war. Just prepare for it it's coming, I hear the drums.   Pastor Newms: [14:52] Um   Pastor Bill: [14:54] Are there jobs okay so now it's time for Getting to Know the Pastor.   Pastor Newms: [14:59] Uh-huh sure is.   Pastor Bill: [15:03] This week's card is "What was your first screen name?"   [15:17] "What was your first screen name?"   Pastor Newms: [15:19] Now okay so are we talking about, because screen names are can be construed differently are we talking about like AOL Messenger screen names are we talking about, like the three call letters you put into video games because that's all they allowed on high scores are we talking about.   Pastor Bill: [15:41] No not initials an actual name.   Pastor Newms: [15:49] Hey well days what was that good you know I'm not going to even remember because that was, that was pre Newms would have been our first AOL chat rooms was before that name so, I have no idea I don't know.   Pastor Bill: [16:22] Okay my first screen name was billiamshea82.   Pastor Newms: [16:30] You still use that email.   Pastor Bill: [16:35] No I don't not with the 82 now it's just billiamshea and I dropped the 82 when I dropped Hotmail.   Pastor Newms: [16:44] Yeah I honestly don't remember I can tell you my first, Xbox name because I actually still have my Microsoft account is under a live email address as opposed to a Microsoft account I'm actually off to dress which is, I'm not going to say it now just realized that I gave too much of.   Pastor Bill: [17:14] The mistake that you had made.   Pastor Newms: [17:15] Yeah but I know it.   Pastor Bill: [17:22] My mom still has a live email address.   Pastor Newms: [17:24] I am it was really weird like when I started doing something and was like do you have a Microsoft account and I entered my regular email and it was like oh your Microsoft account is this and I'm like, I mean technically yeah I, so I still use mine which is really weird and there's no telling. What might be on it wherever the email box is actually held out their necks.   Pastor Bill: [18:00] At this point just a lot of spam.   Pastor Newms: [18:02] I'd hate to imagine what's in there to be honest because I never have actually used it as an email, it's only a login for things so I would hate to imagine what is actually sitting out there and how much of it there is.   Pastor Bill: [18:22] Indeed.   Pastor Newms: [18:23] So yeah that was easy.   Pastor Bill: [18:25] All right cool so I guess we're warmed up and we warmed up man I know I'm warmed up it's hot in here.   Pastor Newms: [18:34] My hands actually cold but you know I guess we're whoa.   Pastor Bill: [18:44] All right so tonight we are talking about well okay so tonight's episode title is privileged, insert word in the blank, privileged Progressive her great I said privilege Im like that's the wrong word Progressive.   Pastor Newms: [19:04] I was like okay that's not what you sent me I'm not prepared to talk about privileged.   Pastor Bill: [19:08] Just like never those like I prepared for the wrong thing.   Pastor Newms: [19:14] Like I can talk about privilege fill in the blank because I call people privileged fill in the blanks all the time but, I'm going to slip at some point of the podcast if that's where we're going I'm going to say the fill in the blank word.   Pastor Bill: [19:32] Progressive.   Pastor Newms: [19:33] Yes.   Pastor Bill: [19:34] Fill in the blank and so, who's that it's so basically in the grand scheme of things when we talk about people being Progressive we're looking at social constructs, religion you know Christianity and and know on and on and on and on and on. And the premise of what I'm just going to lay it out there the premise of my message tonight that I want to get across is that, treating other people with basic decent. Wow words treating others with basic human decency is not Progressive.   Pastor Newms: [20:27] It's not.   Pastor Bill: [20:30] If someone says this is my pronoun using their pronoun is not Progressive it's respect okay, I just it goes on and on and on and on all examples of that same exact kind of thing showing someone, that they are respected and loved and recognized is not Progressive it's not some, big change from the way things always have been, the words and the way you're using them have changed, being a basic decent human being and and treating other people like they are worthy human being that is not Progressive, It should just be the normal.   Pastor Newms: [21:24] Yeah and like you know little things like we should not tell people that they should eat out of dog bowls and you know little things. When you call someone out for saying things like that and then. You're called other things in you're just like no no you should just treat humans as valid humans this shouldn't be a, it shouldn't be hard.   Pastor Bill: [22:01] And the same thing part of my message tonight of the same thing applies to Christianity and to scriptures, it is not Progressive to love your neighbor with no conditions that's literally as basic of Christianity as you can get there's nothing Progressive about that, nothing Progressive about grabbing hold of the hand of your neighbor whose black, white, Jewish, Muslim, gay, straight, trans, young, old, did I miss anybody, there's nothing Progressive about loving your neighbor as they are it is the basics of Christianity the very very basic and then it gets labeled Progressive and rejected, by the actual progressives, who have stopped doing what the Bible said this to do and created their own little denomination of what we do this.   Pastor Newms: [23:21] That is that is definitely something that that is is interesting, when you're talking about Grace when you're talking about you know the things that we normally talk about there are people who will then label, us as quote-unquote Progressive Christians and then like, you go out and you look at what the definition on the internet of a progressive Christian is and you're like no no, that is that is not what we are we are we are just you know if anything we're Old Testament, Christians were actually really old Christians we are not progressives we do not believe that Jesus is, one way we don't you know there's there's a lot that you shirt reading that Progressive stuff there's actually a couple of churches here in Murfreesboro that. When we were looking as we're looking for a new, church it's like we came across one and it was it was one of the it is it's you know oh we're coming together as all faiths and all and invented and I'm like no no no no sorry no.   Pastor Bill: [24:47] As long as all those fists and come under the banner of God sent Jesus Christ then sure let's all come together.   Pastor Newms: [24:56] They don't and so that's always an interesting thing when you look at, how words turn over time also you know there's it's such a weird Oddity, when you think of you know 20 years ago if someone said you were Progressive you were like maybe and now it's like you're Progressive no no no no no no no because it now means something, a step, you know it's a step outside of Christianity in my mind because it's stopping following Christ it's will Christ is a way to God instead of you know.   Pastor Bill: [25:50] That's not a semantics around relation that's a straight up.   Pastor Newms: [25:53] No I know that's why that's why I said it very sarcastically I mean it's just crazy when we want to take the words of Christ and blatantly just walk away from her, and, call ourselves Progressive and so it's definitely something that is a dangerous line that are that there are people that are, calling themselves post evangelicals are going towards so.   Pastor Bill: [26:29] Post Evangelical.   Pastor Newms: [26:46] High percentage is because somewhere in the church, abused power but you know that's neither here nor there there's other reasons also that it can happen but people who were raised in the church and have walked away from, the church are commonly referred to as post evangelicals and even some cities, and some counties and countries and things that's what they term it is post Evangelical, areas of the country so people that were in the Bible Belt and are no longer people that were things like that.   [27:36] But I know that's not the exact Direction you wanted to go tonight.   Pastor Bill: [27:42] I laid my cards on the table.   [27:51] So where we go from here is where we go from here where do we go from here there's something that says that.   Pastor Newms: [28:01] So I was wondering, at the beginning of every episode and then on our podcasts on the little as it goes out there's a little picture and it's got the verse for the week on it and I was wondering the purpose behind, this particular verse for this.   Pastor Bill: [28:23] Okay which was Romans chapter 12 verse 15.   [28:35] And I think this this really sums up, the whole basic human decency thing Rejoice with those who Rejoice and weep with those who weep.   [28:54] That in a nutshell for me sums up the whole treating other people correctly. So you have all this blaming and finger-pointing and treating people a certain way because they don't line up with the way you see the world ended up. Here in Romans Paul lays out this beautiful thing about. Christian ethics more or less and this thing of empathizing with each other, and being able to put yourself into their shoes, and being able to Rejoice with another human being because they're rejoicing being able to weep with another human being, because they're weeping I think about as a good example when the Supreme Court said, every state has to recognize as a license issued by another state, and the whole LGBTQ Community celebrated.   [30:16] As empathic people who are commanded to Rejoice with others when they rejoice. That's a victory we should have celebrated. And what I saw play out in churches Across the Nation was condemnation.   [30:41] Condemnation of the people celebrating, condemnation of their lifestyle choices, condemnation of so many things and while you may or may not have agreed with, gay marriage and homosexual relationships as a Christian, who is commanded to go out and reach the world with the gospel message. Make friends and make relationships with people to bring them to the Lord we should have been celebrating.   [31:22] And with those people before that that were hidden in all those roadblocks and not able to and going through these gut-wrenching life, issues things like, well I've been with this person for 20 years and they had a car wreck but we live in a state where we can't actually officiate our marriage and now they're in the ICU dying and I can't even see the person I've been with for the last 20 years, while they're on their deathbed because we're not technically related.   [31:57] And we weren't weeping with those people when they were weeping.   [32:03] So to me this verse really sums it up in a very sobering way. We should be treating other people in a manner where we can Rejoice with them when they rejoice and weep with them when they weep this is loving your neighbor. This is not Progressive this is basic love. This is basic compassion but they're doing this and they're doing that and I don't agree with this and I don't agree with that, well you sir need to get your heart right with the Lord then because it has nothing in the scripture about only show compassion to your neighbor, only with your neighbor only Rejoice with your neighbor if your neighbor looks like you thinks like you talks like you and is perfect like you that's not there.   Pastor Newms: [33:06] The Commandment is to love. Not to tolerate, through several conversations this week because of some situations, there's been a lot of conversations that I've been a part of or seen going on and, Toleration has been talked about a bunch it's like well I tolerate them and it's like, what you tolerate a human being you you like well I don't agree with them so I only have to tolerate them no you have to love them you don't have to agree with them, but you also shouldn't talk so derogatory you know you shouldn't you know there are think it's not about oh well I tolerate that person. You know I disagree with a lot of things in life and not all of them, for valid reasons because I'm a very picky individual I'm very opinionated I know this is shocking to anyone who knows me but.   [34:30] I can't just tolerate the people around me I'm commanded to love them so no I don't like, that this person has this going on I don't like that that person has that going on I don't like that this person does that doesn't mean I'm going to have, a Yell at them conversation or a disregard of their human life because of it, we're supposed to come alongside them and love them and show them Jesus in the way that we can and.   [35:16] That's what we're supposed to do like it's not, it shouldn't be too complicated but people are like well I only, tolerate up to this point you're like no no that you don't get to choose at what point you stop loving humans that's it, The Love Thy Neighbor didn't have a caveat on it technically it has a caveat as yourself but that was also talking about, loving yourself and that as isn't, caveat as it's a different as in the but anyway I'm not going to get into that doesn't actually mean as sadly because.   Pastor Bill: [36:01] Cumulative.   Pastor Newms: [36:02] Then I wouldn't have to love people because I don't like myself most days but sadly that's not what the verse means in, the original text so I don't get to use that loophole I tried I tried really hard.   Pastor Bill: [36:19] Always with the loopholes.   Pastor Newms: [36:21] Hey you know it's there important in life, I'm a good I'm A good rule follower.   [36:33] But yeah I mean that's that's the thing that really irked me this week I had some really, angry conversations throughout the week with Billiam not angry at Bill, angry and Bill just went a uh hu uh hu uh hu because of things that are going on and, it was just funny because it's like well I mean if you feel you need to say something you can but, and I'm like but I'm angry he's like well yes but you still have to be nice to the other person that you're angry with also well I don't want to be well then that's not love you're like a fine you're right all right I'll word it nicely you know but that's always something that's hard to do also is to love the people that we disagree with, yes this person is being a fill-in the blank that we were talking about at the beginning of the episode because of the bad titling, but that doesn't mean we can not show love to those people also even in the people that we know are, going in scripture people we know are using the lord's name in vain and not in the way of you know like we've talked about in the past.   [38:00] Twisting the words of the Bible and using God to control people in or, beat them down as opposed to Bringing people up and loving them we still have to show those people love and not, call them bigots and throw things at them no matter how much I want to my best friend says I'm not allowed to because I have to show them love and so that's something that, often times, people skim over you know when you're commanded love everyone sadly it does mean everyone it's sadly means.   Pastor Bill: [38:49] We're given a lot of generalizations here so let's just kind of bring bring it back around and give the exam, so we play a game it's am ultimately you know mother person game Sue's interactions with other human beings a lot of interactions, and there are there's this long-held Grudge between these two individuals is female it plays the game and this male plays game and she is the one to, Tribble a lot you know there are people like that that they won't let something go and they'll just keep bringing it back up and so she's just doing her thing and never really crossing the line, too much some of the verbiage she's used she's used some some wording that I wouldn't have agreed with in the past, but nothing like overly oh my gosh you you need to be censured for saying that so she's pushing this guy and he tells her to go, what did you say eat from a dog dish or whatever was he told her.   Pastor Newms: [39:55] From a dog dish because you are a blank.   Pastor Bill: [39:59] So another member of her Alliance came into the chat to defend her, and I don't really remember how it came up that he was gay but it came up that he was a gay man the one that's defending the female and the other person involved, then said you need to get out more told him it was Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve proceeded to tell him that Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed, for the way he lives his life.   Pastor Newms: [40:34] By the flood.   Pastor Bill: [40:35] And then proceeded to tell him that God sent a flood, to destroy the whole world because of his kind and this gentleman keeping his cool said. Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by fire.   Pastor Newms: [40:57] And then berated him for not knowing his Bible which was very humorous to read and just sad that it was even said.   Pastor Bill: [41:10] So so so I stepped into the situation and I publicly denounced, belittling women which this guy has done I publicly denounced casually using homophobia as a weapon, and dehumanizing other, and I told the their Alliance that he needed to be removed from the head of their Alliance because he has engaged in these acts repeatedly.   Pastor Newms: [41:47] This is not the first time sadly there is lots of documentation that it's happened on multiple occasions.   Pastor Bill: [41:56] We came to the defense of the gentleman who identified himself as a gay man and the girl who was told go away from a dog dish because. We have to stand up for those that are being disenfranchised that's basic. Did you see it and when someone is using the Bible to don't make that face on camera.   Pastor Newms: [42:27] My my OBS something is gone sideways and I don't know what I've broken.   Pastor Bill: [42:38] Do we still have audio going out.   Pastor Newms: [42:40] I don't think I broke anything about that.   Pastor Bill: [42:48] Possible technical difficulty.   Pastor Newms: [42:52] Can everyone still see us and someone say that they can see us and I don't know where this, is supposed to be okay they can hear and see us so obviously whatever I broke is not it is just a thing inside my tool not anything to actually cause issues so I don't know what I did, okay so continue.   Pastor Bill: [43:14] Stream still says we're we're live so.   Pastor Newms: [43:20] I just don't know where this little thing is supposed to go.   Pastor Bill: [43:24] So we took the, we stood up for the person who's being disenfranchised because you should always send up for, the person is being disenfranchised the person who's being attacked the person who you know and and the person you stepped Over The Line, especially using the Bible to beat someone over the head, so   Pastor Newms: [43:56] Especially using the Bible inaccurately.   Pastor Bill: [43:59] And then using it inaccurately.   Pastor Newms: [44:02] That's that's that's the thing that pushed one of the things that pushed me over the edge was not. I take great offense when when people use Christianity as the reason, for being a bully if you're just kind of a jerk, cool be a jerk like that if that's who you are do you whatever I don't care, but don't use your Christianity as the basis for why you are now treating someone and going out of your way to treat someone differently, because you now know they believe something different than you that, is where I start to have a big issue with it and the other aspect that makes this not worse necessarily but this, it was cuz they're not now, the fourth largest Alliance in the game so it's not even just like oh it's these three dudes over here being stupid and we can just ignore them and yes they're wrong.   Pastor Bill: [45:19] It's a guy leading an alliance of 71 people.   Pastor Newms: [45:21] Yeah.   Pastor Bill: [45:23] Did have 71 people they ridden some issues.   Pastor Newms: [45:28] There's been lots of benefits been fun watching some of the drama one of his people that doesn't agree with him decided to kick all of their members and they've only gotten about half of them back but, to me I really take a lot of offense to when people then, defend someone doing that I just it's it's wrong with me because it's just like why are you using things to.   Pastor Bill: [46:00] There's an appropriate time there's an appropriate time to defend someone who is the offender and it's after you've addressed the situation, right pull him out of the Admiral or position and then when he's no longer in power, and he's removed from the situation then we can deal with the hurt that he's going through.   [46:32] To defend him while he still in a position to continue hurting others, is inappropriate this is this is this whole this whole thing about and the church is horrible about it the Big C horrible about it when someone comes up and says that person did this to me, the first response in most churches has been oh no brother so-and-so would never do that we can't believe that instead of oh my gosh I'm so sorry that you were hurt, let's pull you aside and you tell us what happened we'll go pull him aside, if we can corroborate then we can move forward with a punishment, instead of believing the person and giving the accused the benefit of the doubt.   [47:35] We just ignore the person who was hurt and lift up the person who was accused, but that's not how that should work we have to believe the accuser even if the person being accused is innocent while still giving the benefit of the doubt to the person accused, and allow the person that was hurt to give the evidence so that we can take action.   [48:05] Unfortunately if you are hurt and you have an accusation but you don't have evidence then there's little to nothing that an Administration can do they can believe you all day, without evidence there's little to nothing that an administrative body can do to fix the situation.   Pastor Newms: [48:29] And and one of the one of the issues, there are times where overtime the reverse we find out is true, there was recently a very very publicized if your, into the internet much where there was an actress who went, and said my husband is abusing me and.   Pastor Bill: [49:01] Mmm.   Pastor Newms: [49:02] We as a community we as people who get on the internet we're like can't believe he would do that wow that guy seems really good he must be a jerk and, you know we removed it, couple months down the road come to find out all the police reports, were dismissed because they were lies and all the things that she did, to do it including the makeup artist that put the makeup on her to show the bruising and all of that all came out and we're like no this was a ruse just to get money and she got it, and then she didn't use it how she said she was going to so she lied again to the public and that and then now the internet's like, never mind he's great you suck and, whole scores of people just straight didn't go watch certain movies.   [50:19] Got to love children, I still haven't seen that movie because I boycotted it and never went back to watch it because, I don't want to at this point and it's just like all right and you know and, and he's like no here's all the things but he lost movie deals you know tons of stuff because of it and he now has to rebuild his life when come to find out, she was the abuser the whole time, he's in counseling for it and so it's kind of like oh hmm so.   Pastor Bill: [51:15] Hmm.   Pastor Newms: [51:18] You know there are times where the reverse is true, and we as a culture or administration of groups and things like that have to, take both set him aside your both innocent till proven guilty you know we believe you we believe you, where's the you know and then.   Pastor Bill: [51:38] And sometimes it really is a fact of the abuser or made an honest mistake.   Pastor Newms: [51:48] Sometimes not always.   Pastor Bill: [51:48] Not always not always sometimes that's why there's that thing of you know we believe both of you let's go over what happened.   Pastor Newms: [52:01] And when we say abuser.   Pastor Bill: [52:03] Lots of people well if you're accused of abuse you know the the the person that got hurt is the one that has the right of saying that was abuse.   Pastor Newms: [52:16] And that and it can be more than just one type so many people are like oh well, you know well there is verbal abuse and that can cause permanent damage and a lot of people for years and years and years will verbal abuse isn't real abuse mental illness.   Pastor Bill: [52:34] No it definitely is.   Pastor Newms: [52:35] You know and you know there's people who have permanent scarring from abuse I mean I know, I have friends that if you talk too loud you know that person's like I'm sorry I'm sorry you're like what, huh no you're just you're just over there like you're across the restaurant I wasn't trying to yell at you like, why are you flinching in the corner wait why are you finishing in the corner who's done something to make you feel you know and that's when the Jonathan side of me stops, forgetting to love the whole group and that's besides the point that's another discussion that's when my Vengeance comes out though, it's definitely something that. It sucks but we have to try to do better and continue to try to do better as a culture and has the capital c church and as individuals in, protecting the disenfranchised and the people that need when they ask don't don't swoop in and, try to protect as the I'm the white man protecting you make sure that your please don't put on that Cape because that's a whole nother issue that we won't talk about.   Pastor Bill: [54:05] No delusions of being the white savior.   Pastor Newms: [54:08] Yeah make sure you're not doing.   Pastor Bill: [54:09] My actions this week in game were accurate and appropriate because I'm a part of this community I'm an admiral in this community I've been an admiral in another Alliance in this community, and you know it was brought to my attention.   Pastor Newms: [54:26] Yeah you didn't do it you didn't do it because you felt like it, the group of the particular person and a different group said hey this happened we're publicly denouncing these people and then it was like wait why.   Pastor Bill: [54:45] I went to them and I said.   Pastor Newms: [54:47] Here's all the reasons why.   Pastor Bill: [54:47] Do you have screenshots of what was said and I gathered screenshots I grabbed the gathered evidence so that I could take action.   Pastor Newms: [54:55] And then it's like okay they've said this and there are smaller group and they aren't as vocal so I can be super loud.   Pastor Bill: [55:07] But I think it's I think it's important for a lot of people to hear that asking for evidence is not saying you don't believe someone, asking for evidence is asked is saying I believe you give me fire power, to move on your behalf because that's what the evidence is, so with your if your heart is your you know abuse if you're or anything, expect to be asked for evidence and don't be offended that you're being asked to give evidence because evidence is Firepower they can use on your behalf poor Finnick he's in the shower.   Pastor Newms: [55:55] Okay I'm like who's pinching my.   Pastor Bill: [55:56] And he is not happy about it.   Pastor Newms: [56:07] Okay no one's pinching him okay that's just making sure.   Pastor Bill: [56:12] Probably not.   [56:28] Dad replace little dude with a new little dude because little dude once a little gnome.   Pastor Newms: [56:32] You brought in a new little tube for me have a little dude because no one in my.   Pastor Bill: [56:38] I was like I was like.   Pastor Newms: [56:39] Can have little dudes we all have little girl.   Pastor Bill: [56:41] I was like I was like Greg you can die now I have a replacement, he was like what I'm just playing I'm just playing but seriously.   Pastor Newms: [56:53] That's me that's not showing love.   Pastor Bill: [56:55] All right no it's well it kind of is when you know you're driving your teenager considering that whole ribbing means friendship face anyway.   Pastor Newms: [57:06] Still don't I still don't understand some of the language he uses.   Pastor Bill: [57:11] His his eaten speak yeah it's weird alright well that's all I have for tonight do you have anything else you want to add.   Pastor Newms: [57:30] Please don't make me so angry that I yell at Bill and then yell at you in a game like it's just please don't do that to me my heart can't take it I'm old now.   Pastor Bill: [57:45] 30 second. 30 second buffer has been 30 seconds yet course not that's not time works 30 second buffer 30 second buffer 30 second buffer I love you guys have a great week.   Pastor Newms: [58:01] The think the thing that moved is the timer thing that I can see what okay there it is.   Pastor Bill: [58:07] Okay it's definitely been 33 seconds so you say your thing you say stay safe you say your thing and until next time.   Pastor Newms: [58:14] Stay safe stay safe and and we love you. I'm a hit the button now.

Some episodes will feature interviews with importers, retailers, sommeliers, wine makers, and other enthusiasts, some will just be me talking about a particular subject like a wine/winemaker/style/region/or even an essay on philosophy of natural or low intervention wine. The podcast is meant for both beginners AND people already into the wine scene... it is intended to demystify and make natural wine more appealing and easy to understand. Glug glug!!!Podcast Intro for episode:Today I think back to when it was freezing and dark and cold in early early February. Luckily, I had a little bit of warmth in my day by talking with my friend Sarka Betke. Like a cup of hot chocolate, Sarka is sweet and gives you the feeling of warmth inside. Sarka comes from my favorite region in the Czech Republic and she has taught me plenty about the wine from where she is from along with exposing me to a number of wonderful wines. Her company Vinofactum was originally intended only to be b2b, but due to the pandemic, she had to make some changes, which I think have greatly benefited the end consumer by having to open an online shop & deal directly with the public. Sarka invited me to the tasting that gave rise to the essay we adapted in the last episode, and has offered to help me find people to work with/for once the pandemic is over in her home country. A true mensch. You'll love this episode! apologies for the sound quality. the file seemed to be corrupted as the mics were fine and the noise did not exist while recording. digital distortion wasnt removable with noise filters. Glug glug!!!Podcast Intro for episode:Today ill be talking to a very good friend of mine, someone who I am very lucky to have in my life & who probably has more responsibility for this podcast happening than anyone other than myself. You see, Jan Hugel is something of an accidental mentor to me when it comes to low intervention wine. Wine in general even. Jan & I have known each other for quite a long time & he took an interest in my love of wine quite early on because (little did I know) he was on his way to becoming pretty much synonymous with natural wine in Berlin. Jan very often questioned why I liked what I did, what I liked about it, & whether or not he could get me to try & appreciate things that I was staunchly opposed to. & he never did this in a way that was any less than respectful of my opinions even when they were (I know realize) pretty damn stupid. Jan was priming the engine the whole time, getting me ready for that moment when I tried the wine (or wines) that would completely change the way I thought about them & introduce to me the whole vast new world that I now try very hard to bring to others. Someday, though we have very different things that we look for in wine & very different kinds of wine we would like to make ourselves, I hope to run/work a vineyard together with this guy. Without further ado, Jan Hugel... Support this podcast

Let's get right to it: This week's HWYW episode is legendary. CARRIE BROWNSTEIN is here to discuss PORTLANDIA, her dogs' defective sense of time, how many times she cried during BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, and the time she hung out with Mick Jagger while he wore sweats and watched cricket. Plus! The fabulous DANIELLE HENDERSON joins us to tell us about the origin of her website and book, FEMINIST RYAN GOSLING, her horror movie-loving grandma, and why she's a little wary about DJANGO UNCHAINED. And! The underrated benefits of grudge-holding! The Al Roker Situation, and how we must never forget it! Hope Springs, and how it was snubbed! And a humiliating story about drinking a glass of milk.
