Swanee has been belting out rock classics since he was a wee laddie growing up in Glasgow. As an elder of the hit making Swan/Barnes gene pool, Swanee has lived life to the fullest, but there are some insights he rarely gets a chance to share, like his days as an army chef and pastry cook, his kitchen surprises and secrets for his favourite curries and much-loved trifle. We also hear the back story to his latest musical masterpiece, a duets album called Believe, where a dream comes true and Swanee records with his brothers Jimmy and Alan Barnes for the first time ever. Swanee is not only a great singer, he is a larrikin, a man of the people and loved and respected across the music industry. The names might not sound very appertising but the memories they bring are like no other. In the Food Poll this week, the Razz, Glug and the Sunny Boy line up in all their frozen glory, vying for the title of favourite frozen pyramid of the past.

This weeks podcast starts with a debate about whether we can drink beer at 9am, which is the time that we recorded this episode. Leading to a chat about an other drinks that we might have enjoyed over the years, and what the 'kids' are drinking these days. Ox tells us about how he stops his son from drinking all his drinks in the bar fridge at home. While we're talking drinking, Marko tells the story of being arrested when he first got to the US for driving on the wrong side of the road. We want to find his mugshot from the Lubbock City police department in Texas. Talking mugshots, Ox and Marko chat about the Nick Nolte one, and the Hugh Grant mugshot. Mark cannot believe Hugh Grant was going out with Liz Hurley at the time he did the wrong thing. Ox agrees, and both reckon Liz Hurley has the greatest voice ever.Given they're talking drinks, inevitably Ox and Marko start talking nightclubs; one of their favourite topics, and Marko tells a story about a night out at the New Orleans club in Melbourne in the 90s after 100 drinks which could have derailed his golf career. The pod switches tack then into stupid things we all did when we were younger. Ox talks about a nasty BMX accident caused by him being a muppet as a kid; and Marko talks about bad behaviour in a sponsor-provided car when he was 21 with six passengers in a 2-door car. Ox and Marko want to hear your stories of stupid stuff you did when you were a kid. Let us know on the socials or leave us a voicemail here. Ox tells another story about his mate Eggy who had a nasty incident involved his private parts jumping into a gorge with Ox when they were kids, an incident that still causes Eggy problems 30-years later. We're sympathetic, but it's also very funny. And somehow we end up talking about seagull stories. If you're a seagull lover, maybe fast forward through this part.We get a voicemail from Gav who has a problem on public transport, and poses it as an example of Civil Selfishness. Marko is in vigorous agreement. It leads onto another business idea from Ox, which he thinks will make millions if Village Roadshow take it onboard. Ox then puts our podcast license at risk with an appalling story about Ballarat in Victoria.Mark then raises a personal example of Civil Selfishness involving his and Ox's business, Assembled Media, involving the staff kitchen. Marko's obsession with neatness and cleanliness has caused him to get very worked up and he's not happy. Ox has a second business idea, that he reckons could make millions; this time Marko agrees! Watch this space.Plenty of feedback this week, someone is getting a major whack, we get the results of our Sunnyboy, Glug and Razz poll, and we have feedback from The Mole, one of our fave twitter accounts, on Ox's recent overpriced breakfast at a cafe.Marko tells us how he proposed to Trish. You'd think it would be romantic, you'd be very wrong.Follow a Couple of Blokes, Couple of Beers and get involved with the show on social media: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, or send a voicemail to Ox and Marko here. I don't think my toilet is happy with me. I know this because it hardly flushes for me anymore. I think it was Taco Bell, And that crunch rap supreme from Hell. I doubt John has ever recovered. DJ Glug is a partner at Connection Verified Records and the moniker for Naarm-based (Melbourne) artist James Keogh. With roots playing in jazz bands, he was naturally drawn toward the textural instrumentalism of playing on turntables and spending weekends digging around Melbourne for records. His track selection combines bouncy tribal beats with sharp vocal cuts and loops, channeling the likes of old-school DJs Hardcell and Technasia with upcomers of the fast groove sound like Rove Ranger and Stef Mendesidis.

Speaking of Katie Mather as both a peer, and as a friend, she is someone who continually impresses me. I first came across her work through her old blog, called The Snap and The Hiss, and was enamoured with her writing from the very first sentence. Since then she's gone from strength to strength, producing a series of wonderfully evocative articles, and taking on editorial roles both at new wine publication Glug and here at Pellicle.Having her on board as a regular contributor alone was a thrill, and if you read her pieces such as this one on the nostalgia of burger vans, or her epic taxonomy of the British bread roll (the most read feature we've ever published) you'll soon understand why. Taking her on as an associate editor deepened her connection to the work we publish. What editors do largely happens behind the curtain, but you can see her influence on pieces such as Josh Barrie's profile of a very special branch of Londis in North London, or in my own feature about Sheffield's Brewery of St. Mars of the Desert. We are so stoked to get to work with her, and can't wait to see what else she brings to our little magazine. But the depth of Katie's talents don't end there. In late 2019, she and her husband Tom finally got the keys to their bar, Corto. Based in their hometown of Clitheroe, situated in Lancashire's Ribble Valley, Corto is part of a new wave of bars slowly emerging within the United Kingdom. Inspired by the food and drink culture of Northern Spain, the bar merges the concepts of craft beer, natural wine, cider and delectable small plates into something that is far greater than the sum of its parts. I'm biased, but you should visit. You'll be planning your next trip there before you've got halfway through your first pint, or whatever's by the glass on that particular day.As a bonus, before the interview I dig into some of the bigger beer news that's occurred lately. From Monster acquiring the Canarchy collective of breweries in the United States, to Lion announcing it is to sell UK acquisitions Fourpure and Magic Rock, there's a lot to dig into. And that's before I take the chance to chew through the BBC's recent documentary on Scottish brewery BrewDog, and why I think its behaviour reflects badly on the entire British craft beer scene. It's a bumper episode, and I hope you enjoy listening. Don't forget to hit subscribe and leave a rating if you've got a second, as this will help more folks find the show. You might also see we've got a new logo thanks to our resident designer Tida Bradshaw. It felt like it was time to give the podcast a little spruce up, so we hope you like that. The podcast is meant for both beginners AND people already into the wine scene... it is intended to demystify and make natural wine more appealing and easy to understand. Glug glug!!!Podcast Intro for episode:Today I think back to when it was freezing and dark and cold in early early February. Luckily, I had a little bit of warmth in my day by talking with my friend Sarka Betke. Like a cup of hot chocolate, Sarka is sweet and gives you the feeling of warmth inside. Sarka comes from my favorite region in the Czech Republic and she has taught me plenty about the wine from where she is from along with exposing me to a number of wonderful wines. Her company Vinofactum was originally intended only to be b2b, but due to the pandemic, she had to make some changes, which I think have greatly benefited the end consumer by having to open an online shop & deal directly with the public. Sarka invited me to the tasting that gave rise to the essay we adapted in the last episode, and has offered to help me find people to work with/for once the pandemic is over in her home country. A true mensch. You'll love this episode! apologies for the sound quality. the file seemed to be corrupted as the mics were fine and the noise did not exist while recording. digital distortion wasnt removable with noise filters. Glug glug!!!Podcast Intro for episode:Today ill be talking to a very good friend of mine, someone who I am very lucky to have in my life & who probably has more responsibility for this podcast happening than anyone other than myself. You see, Jan Hugel is something of an accidental mentor to me when it comes to low intervention wine. Wine in general even. Jan & I have known each other for quite a long time & he took an interest in my love of wine quite early on because (little did I know) he was on his way to becoming pretty much synonymous with natural wine in Berlin. Jan very often questioned why I liked what I did, what I liked about it, & whether or not he could get me to try & appreciate things that I was staunchly opposed to. & he never did this in a way that was any less than respectful of my opinions even when they were (I know realize) pretty damn stupid. Jan was priming the engine the whole time, getting me ready for that moment when I tried the wine (or wines) that would completely change the way I thought about them & introduce to me the whole vast new world that I now try very hard to bring to others. Someday, though we have very different things that we look for in wine & very different kinds of wine we would like to make ourselves, I hope to run/work a vineyard together with this guy. Without further ado, Jan Hugel... Support this podcast
