Although we cover sports (and pseudo sports) here, we felt it was better to have our tribute to the late great Jim Brown, who passed away this week, was to analyze a small part of his popular culture career, by looking at some of his most-famous Blaxploitation films. Brown made two films as the Green Beret turned Mob enemy Slaughter, in Slaughter (1972) and Slaughter's Big Rip Off (1973). In the first, he squares off against the psychotic Rip Torn and in the second, the mob boss tried to take out Slaughter is … Ed McMahon? Maybe Brown's best known genre role was as Jimmy in Three The Hard Way, which is like The Blaxploitation Avengers, where he teams up with Fred “The Hammer” Williamson and martial artist Jim Kelly to fight a white supremacist group out to poison the black population of Los Angeles, Detroit and Washington, DC. If you like old school 1970s violence with plenty of fights, shoot outs and car chases, along with some gratuitous nudity, these pictures are for you. (That presumes you all know about all the cultural mores of the genre, especially the language and the racism.) We had planned on including the Richard Pryor routine about Jim Brown, but it was just too many bleeps to add for a five minute routine. Listen to it when you get the chance; one of my favorite all-time favorite comedy albums.
This week, Charlie welcomes another buzz name in indie horror to the show: New England born writer, director Joe Begos! Joe first made a dent in the world of strange cinema with his 2013 sci-fi shocker ALMOST HUMAN and followed that with his critically acclaimed exploding head saga THE MIND'S EYE. Splatter-filled flicks like the punk rock vampire film BLISS and the epic survival shoot-em-up VFW starring DON'T BREATHE's Steven Lang and Fred "The Hammer" Williamson followed leading to his latest flick, the carnage filled Christmas slasher CHRISTMAS BLOODY CHRISTMAS, featuring a maniacal robotic department store Santa going on a bloody rampage.
What better way to celebrate the great Fred "The Hammer" Williamson's birthday than to invite Matt, The Direct To Video Connoisseur, onto the pod to discuss some Fred and do our top fives? We end up tackling two eras of the man's career and a great discussion was had by all. We didn't forget the segments as well. So break out your best cigar, kick back, and enjoy!

Happy 83rd birthday to Fred "The Hammer" Williamson. Today we celebrate the football star turned actor. University of Florida doctoral student Valerie Gresser narrates.
Continuing with our season of Vigilante/Revenge movies we take a look back at William Lustigs 'Vigilante'; starring the late, great Robert Forster and the always bad ass Fred "The Hammer" Williamson. Enjoy!
Kate and Sky travel back to the 1970's to watch this nuclear powered, disco soaked Love Boat knock off. With a cast of characters we don't see enough of and pricey guest stars like Fred "The Hammer" Williamson and "Dandy" Don Meredith it's no wonder this show was one of the most expensive flops in tv history.

Fred "The Hammer" Williamson starred in some great films throughout his still-continuing career. We look at a great one, and a...not so great one. We start with a film from 1983 that goes by a handful of names, but we watched it as "The New Gladiators". Directed by show-favorite Lucio Fulci, it is a clunky, goofy, slow-moving slog that is representative of Fulci's worst films. We survived it just to get to our second film, the excellent "Hell Up in Harlem" which was released in 1973. It is from writer/director Larry Cohen. It is the sequel to the also-great "Black Caesar", also from Cohen. It continues the story of Tommy Gibbs from the first movie, and it succeeds in every way. We'd love to hear what your favorite Fred Williamson movie is! Please send emails to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. You can also reach us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

Tread Perilously corrects an error by finally taking a look at the Supertrain pilot, "Express to Terror." Noted industrialist Winfield Root's wish to create an atomic powered transcontinental train service comes to fruition with the maiden voyage of Supertrain. It has a disco, a gym, a salon, a pool and a weird babyman for a concierge. Not that any of this matters to Mike Post (guest star Steve Lawrence), a junior agent trying to secure a role for his boss's client (special guest star Vicki Lawrence). He also owes 40 large to Big Ed back in Los Angeles and someone may have put a hit on out him. Will he survive the Express ... to terror? Also guest starring Don Meredith and Fred "The Hammer" Williamson. Sarah Madden and Seth Linker join Erik and Justin to experience the majesty of Supertrain. All fall over themselves to talk about the raw sexual magnetism of weird babyman Dave Noonan (Patrick Collins). Justin learns about Jon Peters' secret origin and the movie Shampoo. Seth defines the word "barbicide." Passenger Jack Fisk (Don Stroud) easily wins Most Valuable Character thanks to his suspenders, comb-over and constant cigar. Erik cannot keep the name "George Hamilton" in his mind. Sarah keeps the gang on the tracks even as the Supertrain itself tries to fly off them.

We learn about his days growing up in Gary, Indiana and his thoughts about the state of the film industry today. Get your helmet on and prepare to lineup against "The Hammer."

Gil Bettman got a BA from Harvard, an MFA from UCLA and broke in as director of hour-long episodic, action-oriented TV in the early 80s’. He directed multiple episodes of Knight Rider,The Fall Guy and BJ and the Bear, as well as a Twilight Zone and numerous second units. He then transitioned to rock videos and directed some of the most popular videos of the mid-80’s, among them, “I Can’t Drive 55” for Sammy Hagar and “Stay the Night” for Chicago. The success of his rock videos got him his first feature film directing assignment – Crystal Heart (1985) starring Lee Curreri and Tawny Kitaen. Crystal Heart was widely distributed and hugely successful in Spanish-speaking markets as Corazon de Cristal. This was promptly followed by a second feature assignment, Never Too Young to Die (1987), starring Gene Simmons, John Stamos and Vanity. NTYTD has since developed a sizable cult following, mostly on the strength of Simmon’s brilliantly wacky performance as the hermaphrodite villain, Velvet Von Ragnar. In 1997, Bettman directed Night Vision, a low budget action film for Fred “The Hammer” Williamson. Since then, he has directed two feature documentaries for Sammy Hagar, The Long Road to Cabo (2003) and Go There Once, Be There Twice (2010). In 1995, Gil was hired by Dean Bob Bassett as a full time professor to teach directing and screenwriting in the film department at Chapman University. Since then, he has helped his visionary dean build the little-known film department into one the preeminent filmschools in the world – The Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. In 2003, Gil wrote down all the hard-earned, invaluable lessons he learned breaking into the industry as a television, rock video, and feature film director, and published his first LA Times best-seller, First Time Director.
