Show Notes Episode 495: The Buck Stops Elsewhere Part 2 of Iran Contra This week Host Dave Bledsoe demands immunity from paying his bartabs only to be found in contempt by the bartender. (Again) On the show this week we take a look at the fallout from the Iran Contra Affair. (Spoiler: No one went to jail.) Along the way we discover that Dave has a dubious idea of what “truth” means. (If you are just now learning this, welcome to the show) Then we dive into why Congress has the ability to investigate things. (Campaign advertisements) Then we talk about how a plane crash in Nicaragua and a magazine in Lebanon caused the whole Iran Contra Affair to come apart at the seams. (The magazine was Highlights for Kids) We take a look at how the Reagan Administration reacted to being accused of doing all the crimes they actually did and how Congress “accidentally” made sure no one would suffer any consequences for breaking the laws. Our Sponsor this week is Shreds It All, when you need documents gone fast, call Shreds it All. We open with the Gipper denying he did anything wrong and close with Lily Kerbey and Tom Parker who want to be clear, it wasn't them. Tatum was a member of the ultra-secret, international G7 run Pegasus "Hit Team" working directly for the sitting President. From sensitive and highly secret - and hitherto largely unknown - Special Forces covert operations in Cambodia, to wandering CIA asset, through to "black ops" activities in Grenada and Oliver North's Iran-Contra "Enterprise," and on to membership in an international "hit team," Gene "Chip" Tatum has seen it all, done it all and is now telling it all. Tatum knows where the skeletons are buried. Above all he is aware that his testimony implicates serving and former US Presidents, plus a whole list of high government officials, and others, in a welter of nefarious activities - including assassination, blackmail, coercion, gun-running, money-laundering and Cocaine trafficking. Tatum, a lanky Floridian, turned whistle-blower following his arrest on a treason charge in 1995. The charge was both astonishing and patently ludicrous and resulted in a flurry of press interest with an article appearing in the Tampa Tribune on 4 May 1996. Incredibly, the charge was later dropped to be replaced by a fraud charge - a drastic step-down. Found guilty after his government appointed attorney refused to call any defense witnesses, he was sentenced to serve a 15-month sentence. www.chiptatum.com Theodore L. Researcher and truth seeker Faust Checho exposes the Bush–Clinton connection to the Iran–Contra Affair — the explosive CIA scandal of the 1980s, built on a covert “guns-for-drugs” pipeline stretching from Central America to Arkansas — in episode 199 of the Far Out with Faust podcast.
Send us a textIn this episode I really want to give you the feeling that George H. W. Bush had finally turned the corner because that was what was really happening at the end of the 1992 campaign. After a tough primary challenge from a surprisingly strong Pat Buchanan, an upstart billionaire in Ross Perot jumping in who had a personal ax to grind with Bush going back many years, and then a formidable, charismatic, Southern Governor in Bill Clinton to face at the head of a resurgent Democratic Party, all combined with a struggling economy, George Bush finally had some momentum heading into the final week of the campaign. The economy had seen some improvement with a 2.8% growth rate in the the third quarter of 1992, and Bush was seeing many of his initiative's bearing fruit out in the electorate. Plus, Bush was seen by everyone as having been a very effective foreign policy President, it seemed that the doubts about the other two leading candidates had finally started to settle in, and people were coming home to the President. The polls by the Wednesday prior to the election had the race in a statistical dead heat. Bush was energized by all the good news and he had one strong card that he was about to play in the final weekend. That card was former President Ronald Reagan, the most popular public figure in a generation, and he was out on the trail for the final time in order to help his former Vice President. All the news for Bush seemed good, Clinton and his team were worried. And then, the sinister hand of the most evil office ever created by our country would strike again. The Iran Contra Special Prosecutor would indict former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger and several others, and they would document dump a number of records into the debate including notes , that everyone had already known existed, that contradicted Bush's earlier statements about his knowledge of the Iran Contra Affair and the sale of weapons to Iran for the release of hostages. The results of that October Surprise engineered by the Special Prosecutor was the stopping of all of that momentum, the Clinton Campaign pounced on the news, and the momentum of the entire election swung totally back to the Governor in those final four days. It would lead to hard and bitter feelings amongst Republicans that to this day have never faded away and cemented in the mind of one Republican, our Host Randal Wallace, that their has never been a more evil office than the Special Prosecutor's Office in our system of government, and that the use of lawfare so flagrantly is the root source of much of the bitter divisiveness that has finally ground our system to halt 32 years later. Previously, we talked with Tim Weiner about an actual U.S. government conspiracy, The Iran Contra Affair, and a conspiracy theory, the Iranian hostages October Surprise. It was almost kept undetected, and plenty of people escaped accountability. In a continuation of that conversation, we look at the many routes to our executive branch pulling off similar actions in secrecy. Specifically, the INCOMING executive branch, which seems to be being designed for it. And if it’s that doable, there must be so many that remain undiscovered.
Get on your tin foil hats, Slackers! In this episode, we take a look at the wild conspiracies that shaped the 1980s—a decade full of political scandals, social upheaval, and a growing sense of mistrust in authority. Some of the most notable were the Iran-Contra Affair, The Crack Epidemic, Denver International Airport and the Satanic Panic. We dive into how these conspiracies became the backdrop for Gen X's formative years, and how they still influence the way we view power and truth today. We might just be a little distrustful of authority!Tune in for a trip down memory lane and a look at the conspiratorial mindset that defined a generation.
Was aspiring investigative journalist Danny Casolaro murdered in his Sheraton hotel room in Martinsburg, West Virginia on August 10th, 1991 because he was very close to exposing a conspiracy involving CIA, DOJ, and Whitehouse players involved in numerous murderous, illegal arms deals, espionage and more as truth? Are there shadowy power players in the highest ranking levels of government who won't hesitate to have anyone who threatens to expose their nefarious wheelings and dealings killed? We often talk about government conspiracy THEORIES, but under Ronald Reagan, there was a bona-fide CONSPIRACY involving illegally selling arms to Iran in exchange for hostages, and then using that money to fund guerillas in South America. So… pretty complicated. If you don’t remember, the hearings captivated the country and almost got Reagan impeached. There’s also the theory that Reagan made a deal with Iran before his election to withold releasing the hostages to hurt Carter. Real Mission Implausible kind of stuff.
Enjoy this exclusive interview with Colonel Oliver North. Colonel Oliver North is a significant figure in American history for his role as a key figure in the Iran-Contra Affair, as well as for his later career as a prolific author and commentator. Constitutional Chats hosted by Janine Turner and Cathy Gillespie
He was an actor, governor and our 40th president. Today, we are discussing the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Though now a modern icon of conservatives, Reagan's political leanings were originally democrat as a supporter of FDR and Truman. During his presidential term, through what lens did Reagan approach the limitations placed on government? In what way was he a Constitutional originalist? How did this belief factor into navigating a constitutional crisis like the Iran Contra Affair? To guide us in this chat, we are pleased to welcome back an alumni of the Reagan White House and current Senior Fellow in the Center for American Prosperity at the America First Policy Institute., Jim Pinkerton, for our weekly constitutional chat.
This week, our hero and host, Neal Pollack, welcomes back Greg Ford to the podcast to talk about 'The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.' It's the second season of The Rings of Power, and the makers of that show have doubled down on what was bad about the first season: Boring characters, slow storylines, and nonsensical world building. For resident Tolkien fans, it's a real disappointment, though the show does look terrific despite the extremely mediocre acting and lame fan service. We cannot recommend it with good conscience. But Stephen Garrett can recommend many of the films coming out of this year's Toronto International Film Festival with good conscience. There was tons of crowd-pleasing Oscar bait this year, including the Papal succession movie Conclave, Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman on all fours, a documentary about Pharrell Williams where everyone is a Lego figure, and a biopic about Robbie Williams where the star is played by a chimpanzee. You heard it here first! Listen up and get your fall movie viewing calendar ready. It should be fun.Why does this new Ronald Reagan biopic feature a narrator, played by Jon Voight, who's an ex-KGB agent? If you're trying to turn nonbelievers into Reagan fans, this is not the way to do it. Contributor Adam Hirschfelder joins Neal to talk about the strange trip that is 'Reagan.' Dennis Quaid plays Ronald Reagan, a good bit of casting. Apparently, Ronald Reagan single-handedly defeated Communism and had nothing to do with the Iran-Contra Affair. Is that true? It's not up for this podcast to decide. But we can certainly decide that 'Reagan' is a silly film, an unintentional comedy that plays like a sketch-show parody of a Reagan biopic.OK, that's all we wrote. We thank you for listening, this week and every week!

Conspiracy Theory content has exploded in recent years and the mainstream Media love to ridicule the free thinkers who either produce or consume such content, because the media's power and income is based on the idea that they provide the truth and have all the answers. Therefore, their authority erodes when intelligent researchers prove that so many popular mainstream narratives are falsehoods designed to steer political opinion and action. As such, conspiracy theories are now taken seriously by believers in truth or those unplugged from the info machine of the populace. So we all know the big topics in the space: The JFK Assassination, Watergate, The Iran Contra Affair, The Roswell Coverup, and a few others. But what about the obscure ideas in an already obscure landscape. Or if not obscure, the fringe, the crazy, or the just plain bizarre. Today that's where we'll go; into the uncharted backwaters of the deeply strange, unhinged, and hardcore bananas Conspiracy Theories that keep the most caffeine crazed, beautiful-mind bulletin board jockeys among us up through the wee hours, where the connections become so convoluted and unlikely, that they suddenly all make perfect sense. The 1980s were a time of allegation and scandal in America. From the 1980 October Surprise, 1985-87 Iran-Contra Affair, and 1986-91 BCCI scandal, the decade seemed only to be going downhill. And in the midst of it all, the US Justice Department was accused of stealing PROMIS, a piece of software that could be used to create a programme that would allow the US government to spy on whomever used it. Danny Casolaro was a writer, poet, and investigative journalist. At the start of the 1990s, he began exploring what had happened to PROMIS, and it led him to see the theft of this software as being at the heart of America's other major scandals. Before he could finish his investigation, however, Danny was found dead in a hotel bathtub, with both his wrists slashed. Did he kill himself, as the police believed, or was he murdered? That is the question at the heart of American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders, a new docu-series on Netflix, directed by Zachary Treitz. He and co-executive producer Christian Hansen are Matthew Sherwood's guests in this episode of Factual America. Together, they discuss what they found as they retraced Danny Casolaro's footsteps in the last days of his life and what it was like for Zachary watching Christian disappear down a conspiracy rabbit hole before he himself followed him. In the process Zachary and Christian uncover a murky web of scandal at the heart of American government. Or do they? Which of the incredible stories of Michael Riconosciuto, one of Danny's major sources, and others can ultimately be believed? The filmmakers race around the country to interview subjects and get to the root of the story – all with the support and patience given to them by Netflix in the making of the series. American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders takes a deep dive into the darkest corners of American business and politics. Make sense of it with Zachary and Christian in conversation with Matthew Sherwood. Sounds like science fiction, right? Well, a leaked document reveals that the US government, through DARPA research, is very close to accomplishing this. Activist Post was recently contacted by an anonymous whistleblower who worked on a secret ongoing mind-control project for DARPA. The aim of the program is to remotely disrupt political dissent and extremism by employing "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation" (TMS) in tandem with sophisticated propaganda based on this technology. TMS stimulates the temporal lobe of the brain with electromagnetic fields. Below are snippets from the research contract that call Christians Extremists. Christians are not doing false flags like the Boston Bombing covered by RT or hitting the pentagon with a missile or planting bombs in the building where the IT servers are that had the 2.3 missing trillion dollars. Christians are not running the drugs like Iran Contra Affair or Vietnam or Afghanistan. Please. I bind this evil mindcontrolism tech in the name of Jesus Christ. INNOVATIVE CLAIMS Humans are storytelling beings. There is no clearer evidence of this than the struggles of the United States government to convince world populations of its good intentions, and to dissuade key constituencies from the powerful narratives told by violent extremists. In short, it is widely recognized that the U.S. is "losing the battle of the narrative" and thus, consequentially, the "war of ideas". This project responds to Technical Areas 1 and 2, with the aim of revolutionizing the study of the neuropsychology of narrative and its effects on persuasion. It will generate the knowledge to effectively understand, model, and disrupt narratives—systems of stories sharing themes, forms, and archetypes—on a neurological level, and the capability to induce powerful narrative phenomena (such as transportation and narrative validity) with certainty. To achieve this goal we have assembled a transdisciplinary team from Arizona State University and the Barrow Neurological Institute. Members have expertise in neuropsychology, neuroimaging, narrative theory, persuasion and strategic communication, as well as religion and culture. The team will achieve four key innovations in research approach, theory, and practice. Integrate narrative theory, neuroimaging, and persuasive outcomes. Each of these areas has been studied independently, but no effort to date has tested responses of the brain to narrative, and correlated those to attitude and behavior change. Our design integrates these concepts in all three project phases, meaning that the neural underpinnings of narrative can be directly linked to practical strategic communication outcomes. Resolve conceptual problems in narrative and psychology of religion. Most narrative theory comes from humanities, which favors interpretive analysis of single narratives (or small sets thereof), and tends to discount generalizable, quantitative, empirical research. Further, studies of the psychology of religion have historically been based on a “measurement paradigm” that takes little account of narrative structure of religious messages This project tests key narrative theories from communication, literary studies, and psychology in a design that will explain relative effects. It also uses stimuli based on religious master narratives—so often appropriated by extremist groups—to understand the psychological effects of particular message features and to attend to the relationship between narrative and political violence in contested populations, a small subset of which may engage in extremist behavior or financially, ideologically, or politically support extremists. Produce significant innovations in the study of the neuropsychology of narrative. While some research exists on how particular brain regions respond to narrative, none has identified brain networks that are responsible for narrative comprehension. This is a key shortcoming because the activity of any particular region is affected in complex ways by activity in other regions. Existing research also relies on fMRI methods that achieve poor temporal resolution. This prevents full understanding of how various regions work together over time to comprehend a narrative. Only by taking a holistic, multi-modal neuroimaging approach can we fully understand how narrative affects the brain. 7 III.A. STATEMENT OF WORK Scope This project integrates narrative theory, psychology of religion, neuropsychology, neuroimaging, and transcranial magnetic stimulation to describe, explain, and test the response of a Narrative Comprehension Network to stimuli based in religious master narratives. The project builds on a core within-subjects experimental design in the first phase, adding between- subjects manipulations in Phase II to test hypotheses about the functions of the network identified in that phase. Phase III seeks to manipulate key accessible areas via Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation to provide strong inferences about the role those areas play in comprehension. Finally, this project will create a fundamental basis for understanding how to disrupt or enhance aspects of narrative structure, and/or brain functioning, to minimize or maximize persuasive effects on subject proclivity to engage in political violence. Need for This Research This project integrates insights from three mutually-informing theoretical terrains: (1) narrative networks in circulation in contemporary cultures, particularly those narratives that are appropriated by extremists to promote, support, and justify violence; (2) brain networks, the neural and cognitive pathways through which the brain processes narrative as measured by multi-modal brain imaging techniques; and, (3) meaning networks or the patterns of interpretation and influence—attitudinal, intentional and behavioral changes—that accrue when narrative neural networks are activated. We will focus on religious narratives partly because of the theoretical opportunities they provide and partly because of their power in catalyzing extremist behavior. Subjects In this program of research we are focusing on members of two religious communities, Christians and Muslims . The choice of Christian and Muslim participants affords us a number of theoretical and practical opportunities. They share a number of key similarities for the purpose of our research, including several similar master narratives (e.g. they share cosmology, are monotheistic, and both are Abrahamic religions). They also have several importantly different master narratives (e.g. the primacy of Mohammed's prophecy for Muslims, the divinity of Jesus for Christians). We can leverage these similarities and differences to design our stimuli. There are several advantages to choosing religious narratives. First, religion is ubiquitous; every culture has some form of religion, and most people in the world are religious. Even if they are not, religious narratives pervade cultures in ways that religious master narratives are familiar to people even if they are not personally religious (Cohen, 2009; Saroglou & Cohen, in press). Third, they are particularly evocative. Religious narratives are among a small set of kinds of narratives that can guide people's ultimate concerns (Emmons, 2003), making people willing to devote their lives to the charitable service of others, to kill or die in the service of religion. We will also measure several individual difference variables related to religious outlooks: intrinsic religiosity, extrinsic religiosity, quest, and fundamentalism.
The Center for Immigration Studies recently uncovered what appears to be deliberate participation in alien smuggling by the Department of Homeland Security. Todd Bensman, the Center's senior national security fellow, revealed the facilitation of illegal entry of large numbers of aliens across the Rio Grande River. George Fishman, the Center's senior legal fellow, joins Parsing Immigration Policy to examine the legal implications for the Biden administration as he detailed in a recent report. If proven, these allegations would constitute criminal violations of the federal anti-alien-smuggling law, with the greatest culpability falling on the members of the Biden administration who came up with the scheme and ordered it carried out.Fishman draws parallels between what he has dubbed “Rio Grande-Gate” and congressional Democrats' investigation into the Reagan administration's “Iran-Contra Affair”. He hopes that Democrats will treat the allegations against Biden's DHS with the same level of seriousness.Fishman also urges Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel to investigate this matter, given doubts that AG Garland's DOJ could conduct a fair investigation. The next administration could also investigate, as the statute of limitations on most alien smuggling crimes is five years. In his closing commentary, Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies and host of Parsing Immigration Policy, discusses a different potential courtroom drama involving the Biden administration. This week, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to stop Texas from putting up marine barriers along the Rio Grande to prevent illegal aliens from crossing into the U.S. and it's likely that Texas will invoke the invasion clauses of the U.S. and Texas constitutions in its defense, representing the first time that issue would be litigated.HostMark Krikorian is the Executive Director of the Center for Immigration Studies.GuestGeorge Fishman is the Senior Legal Fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies.RelatedRio Grande-Gate: Are Biden administration officials deliberately engaged in alien smuggling and are they subject to criminal prosecution?Texas DPS Defends the Border; CBP Helps Migrants EnterTexas to Deploy Marine Barrier in the Rio Grande to Block New Surge of ImmigrantsVideo: A Cold Border War Breaks Out Between Abbott's Texas and Biden's White HouseFollowFollow Parsing Immigration Policy on YouTube, Ricochet, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Podcasts.Intro MontageVoices in the opening montage:Sen. The Credit Mobilier Scandal centered around Railroad construction and the Teapot Dome Scandal centrered around Oil Field contracts. In both cases, the guilty were mostly let off easy. Same was the case in the Iran-Contra Affair during Ronald Reagan's time. Though the scandal created an uproar, the guilty mostly escaped punishment. The ABSCAM though exposed deep corruption within the corridors of power and lot of the guilty paid with their political careers.
On this edition of Parallax Views, Sam Fraser, researcher and senior communications associate at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, joins us to discuss the Biden administration's nomination of Elliott Abrams to the bipartisan United States Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy. A few years ago Abrams, who was at that time appointed as the U.S. special envoy to Venezuela by the Trump administration, was in the news when Rep. Ilhan Omar confronted Abrams on his involvement in the Iran-Contra scandal and human rights abuses in Latin America. Why is a figure like Abrams, who was convicted for his involvement with Iran/Contra, still involved in international relations and U.S. foreign policy? And how do figures like Abrams sticking around effect U.S. relations with Latin American countries? These are just a few of the questions posed in this conversation and Sam's recent article "Biden's disgraceful nomination of Elliott Abrams". This conversation will also delve into the history of the Ronald Reagan Presidency and U.S. foreign policy in that era. We'll discuss Iran-Contra for those who need a refresher, atrocities in El Salvador and Guatemala, dirty wars, death squads in Latin America in the 1980s, the Cold War, Abrams' praise for a dictator that's been convicted of genocide, how left-wing movements gain traction in Latin America and how they are suppressed by the right-wing, the military dictatorship of Gen. Fulgencio Batista and the rise of Fidel Castro, Juan Guaido and the failed coup against Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, Brazilian President Lula Da Silva and Operation Car Wash, Hugo Chavez and failed coup attempts against him in the George W. Bush years, Israel/Palestine, the 2007 Gaza War between Fatah and Hamas, the history of the neocons (neoconservatives) and their role in U.S. foreign policy (also: are they still relevant?), lack of accountability in the U.S. foreign policy blob/establishment, Elliot Abrams and the Council on Foreign Relations, the democracy vs. autocracy debate and its contradictions, American exceptionalism and U.S. hegemony, and more!
Tonight, YLR Host Jeff Hayden shares a rare visit with legendary attorney James Brosnahan.James Brosnahan is one of the nation's most revered trial lawyers. Having tried cases ranging from anti-trust to wire fraud and from patent litigation to white collar crime and murder, Mr. Brosnahan defended John Philip Walker Lindh — the so-called Marin Taliban, an American captured by United States forces as an enemy combatant during the invasion of Afghanistan — and Prosecuted Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger for the Iran-Contra Affair. James Brosnahan is a local legend. If you don't know of Mr. Brosnahan, all the more reason you must listen. His upcoming book: Justice At Trial, is a must read.Questions for Jeff and his guest? "To err is human"That should have been President Reagan's opening line while addressing the country after Iran-Contra came to light. Instead it was a lot of half apologies and half truths. After repeated congressional amendments to stop the White House from funding the rebel Contra group trying to take power in Nicaragua, and negotiating the release of U.S. prisoners with back alley arms deals, the operation needed to be pulled together in secret. Reagan pulled out his moral compass which pointed to the North, Oliver North to be exact. Ollie facilitated the extra cash from the arms deal to fund the Contras. It all worked until a magazine article, and a plane crash tanked the whole operation. Listen in to hear how it all came crashing down.

For a fascinating, inside look at the criminal justice system and the work of one of America's most prominent trial attorneys, check out this interview with ames J. Brosnahan, a veteran of more than 50 years of experience in both civil and criminal trial work.During his notable career, Brosnahan regularly undertook complex cases that were about to go to trial. He has tried, to conclusion, 150 cases that have ranged from anti-trust to wire fraud and from patent litigation to white collar crime and murder. Some of those cases made national headlines, including those that helped provide important First Amendment free speech protections.Brosnahan is named among the top 30 trial lawyers in the United States, according to the Legal 500 US. A lion of the trial bar, Brosnahan is one of the most respected and recognized trial lawyers in the United States. Recently, he completed a book on notable trials from his career, "Justice at Trial: Courtroom Battles and Groundbreaking Cases," now available at Amazon and other booksellers. The interview was conducted by Bob Gatty, host of Lean to the Left and co-host of the Justice Counts podcast, and Justice Counts host, legal thriller author Mark M. Bello. The episode also will stream on Justice Counts June 5.Here are some questions we discussed with Brosnahan:MARK: Welcome Jim—it's an honor to have you on the podcast. Before we talk about your writing, I'd like to talk about Professor Chemerinsky's forward. High praise for your memoir from the famous law professor. There is a lot packed into those two pages, but I was struck by two comments he makes. I'd like your reaction to them: 1. Practicing law requires hard work and attention to detail-many lawyers work hard. But it also requires creativity-Chemerinsky considers you and your team very “clever,” the term he uses. How much of your success is related to hard work and how much to creativity? For young lawyers out there, after learning what they need to know to pass the bar, how do they develop these creative skills the professor talks about? 2. Professor Chemerinsky talks about a topic near and dear to my heart. At that is, essentially, the bad rap lawyers get. He points to you as an example of how an ethical lawyer and decent guy, (you) can also be highly successful. That being a successful lawyer requires “bad behavior” which is patently false. We can chew gum and walk—can you please talk about being successful and ethical at the same time? BOB: The book reveals that you were diagnosed with rheumatic fever and a possible heart problem at age 3, confined to bed until you were six. Your connection to the outside world was a radio with Jack Benny and a window that looked out onto a driveway where you could see kids playing. Do you remember those days, and do you think they played a role in shaping the adult you became? MARK: Like Chemerinsky, my favorite legal quote is “Justice, Justice, Shalt Thou Pursue.” Having read your book, alongside might be: “Sometimes, doing your best is your only reward.” I love that lesson for young lawyers.BOB: Tell our listeners about the Secody Murder Trial-you had only been a lawyer for 18 months and you have this major murder trial involving the native American community. Tough case for a young guy. MARK: As a side note, I was struck by your voir dire in that case and want to hear more. How does a trial lawyer get a potential juror to admit bias on voir dire?BOB: In the book, you indicate that you were influenced by Cecil Poole, Melvin Beli, and other prominent trial lawyers. You worked under Poole, who was the first African American US Attorney in the United States. Obviously, mentoring was important in your career. Is it still? BOB: In 1966, you switch sides after how long as a prosecutor? Tell us about the transition from prosecutor to criminal defense and civil plaintiff attorney?MARK: One of those cases involved representing two young black activists in the Oakland California poverty movement. Tell us about the case. What were they accused of? Why were they prosecuted? And what was the outcome?BOB: I'm an old newspaper guy. In 1968, at the age of 34, you handled a 1st Amendment case that literally would decide the fate of daily papers in America. Or, was it really an anti-trust case? There was a similar issue in Detroit when the News and the Free Press entered into a joint operating agreement. Tell us about your case and the outcome.MARK: In 1978, you take another 1st Amendment case, this one centering around the movie Born Innocent, starring Linda Blair of “The Exorcist” fame. Interesting issue in that case. The plaintiff attorney argued “People who see movies are inspired to act out what they see,” and argued for censorship. Lots of publicity in this one. Tell the story of an attempt to prove what you refer to in the book as “negligent imitation.” BOB: You were a prosecutor—prosecutors have a lot of power in making decision about whether to prosecute or not prosecute, what you call in the book “The Power to Ruin Lives.” How did you deal with the power and what do you recommend to young prosecutors just starting out?MARK: I've often said that if the government really wants to go after and get someone, they can and will. One of the most interesting cases in the book for me was Steve Psinakis case. Ronald Reagan is often cited as an example of a so-called “good” Republican president. While he may have been an effective president, he was far from a good guy. My favorite quote in the chapter? “President Reagan wanted a conviction of a US citizen as a favor to a corrupt, foreign dictator.” The year is 1986, I believe. Tell our listeners the story, please?MARK: Lots of great quotes in the book. I can't seem to get away from them. “Specialization, so prevalent today, can limit a lawyer unnecessarily.” But isn't that advice in conflict with “Jack of all trades, master of none?” What do you tell a young lawyer today about specialization?BOB: Another quote from the book: “Preparation for trial requires a complete immersion into other people's lives while at the same time trying to preserve an objective view of the case.” How does a trial lawyer do that?MARK: Another quote I like in the book is “Trial lawyers are essential to enrich democratic reforms and social progress.” Why do you believe that? Many people would say “get over yourself.” What do you say?BOB: Last quote: You say: “I have always thought of the United States Supreme Court as the legal conscience of our society.” Do you still feel that way with today's court?MARK: At the request of Lawrence Walsh, the special prosecutor investigating the Iran-Contra Affair, you agreed to handle the prosecution of Caspar Weinberger, the US Secretary of Defense under Reagan and Bush one. Before you could try the case, President Bush pardoned Weinberger, an event with caused you “post-pardon depression.” So, how did you really feel?BOB: Were you able to strike a healthy work-life balance? What did that look like? What would you recommend to young lawyers today? MARK: How would you compare civility among lawyers today compared to during your early years of practice?BOB: If you could travel back in time and give your 25-year-old self some advice about career and life, what would it be? Any regrets?MARK: Let's talk about judges. The judge is against you. The rulings aren't going your way, and you are feeling a hostile vibe from the bench. What do you do?MARK: The USA PATRIOT Act, mass surveillance of Americans by the federal government, and the transformation of the FBI into an counterterrorism, counterintelligence, and cybersecurity agency are all things that happened in the last 21 years or so. As a lawyer and an American who cares about civil liberties, do you think these changes have brought some harm as well as enhanced security?BOB: We hope your memoir will be a bestseller. Where can people find it and what's next on the horizon for James Brosnahan?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-lean-to-the-left-podcast--4719048/support.

Raha Jorjani is an Immigration Defense Attorney at California's first public defender Immigration Representation Unit. Because our immigration law is founded on the principle that deportation is a civil issue and not a criminal proceeding which, there are few immigration specific public defender units. This denies millions of people the basic right of public defense. This episode covers the ideals of America and how our government is willfully disregarding its responsibility to help the people fleeing the countries we have destabilized. Raha shares her personal experience working with clients who may appear like criminals on paper but are often victims of wider circumstances enacted by our own government. To tell their story without those crucial details is not just dishonest but dehumanizing. Raha hopes that by sharing these stories and making Americans aware of the reality of what immigrants go through, just to have the opportunity to plead their case, we can break down these antiquated systems. Her office is the first of its kind and is being replicated across the country, hopefully to one day become the standard. America is founded on the principle that all men are created equal so it is up to us to ensure that includes the right to due process, evidentiary hearings and access to counsel. Without these standards of human treatment we are failing as Americans. They don't have to justify why they imprisoned you. You have to justify why you should be free. So you have to prove why you're not a danger to the community, you have to prove that you're not a flight risk and Hunter, that's people who are eligible for bond.” [33:40] “The power of detention is ultimately used as a litigation tool by the Department of Homeland Security. This is one of the only areas where, if you win, you stay in.”[39:30] “When people end up in the deportation system, it is almost always after they have been dealt with by the criminal legal system. So even to the extent that people believe in the criminal legal system and the need for accountability and punishment; the double irony is that these folks have already been through that system, so they've already served their time.” [43:40] “Our relationships with countries define how we view people. So, if we don't agree with a certain country's position, we tend to welcome people from those countries because we basically want to further entrench the idea that what's happening there is bad. Whereas other people from other countries could be facing similar types of persecution or violence and we have very many closed door policies.” [50:24] Contact Hunter Parnell: hwparnell@publicdefenseless.com Instagram Twitter www.publicdefenseless.com

Former CIA-connected pilot, Phillip Marshall, exposed some of the lies being told about the events of 9/11. Phillip Marshall was a pilot for Barry Seal, a CIA informant during the Iran-Contra Affair. Through Marshall's connections, he was able to write a couple of books about some of the issues with the official story of 9/11, including the questions about the plane crash into the Pentagon. Before Marshall could finish writing his third book, he allegedly murdered his children and committed suicide. Many people close to him do not buy the story of him committing suicide, and believe he was murdered.----------------Special Thanks to Mr. Charles Elliott for allowing us to use his song for the intro. In the final installment of the Jeffrey Epstein series, we talk about how Bill Clinton got involved with Jeffrey Epstein. While Bill Clinton was governor of Arkansas, he allegedly worked with the CIA through American Air during the Iran/Contra Affair. This airline was later bought by Leslie Wexner and changed its name to Southern Air Transport. Through this connection, he gained power and eventually was made president of the United States. During Clinton's rise in his political career he was introduced to many connected to Jeffrey Epstein and even received donations from Epstein himself. If you want to follow this story more in-depth, Whitney Webb wrote about all this on UnlimitedHangOut.com follow the link here https://unlimitedhangout.com/2019/07/investigative-series/government-by-blackmail-jeffrey-epstein-trumps-mentor-and-the-dark-secrets-of-the-reagan-era/.----------------Special Thanks to Mr. Charles Elliott for allowing us to use his song for the intro. “I have love in me the likes of which you can scarcely imagine and rage the likes of which you would not believe. If I cannot satisfy the one, I will indulge the other.”― Mary Shelley, Frankenstein"Man," I cried, "how ignorant art thou in thy pride of wisdom!”― Mary Shelley, FrankensteinHave we created Frankenstein's Monster?FOX News Founder Roger Ailes started with a noble idea. To give conservatives a level playing field in the form of a news network that presented the conservative viewpoint in its editorializing and a fair and balanced network in its reporting. As an advisor to President Richard Nixon he saw the unfairness the President was subject to every day he got up out of bed to fight for the American People. He was also witness to the nullification of Richard Nixon's 49 state win and his forced resignation from the Presidency. Now you may not agree with that assessment but millions of people through out the land did agree with it and were angry about what they had seen happen to Richard Nixon. Then they sat on the sidelines and watched the Democratic smear machine destroy a nominee for the United States Supreme Court in Robert Bork and later watched the blueprint for taking out a Presidency put to use again and again in an attempt to undermine both President Ronald Reagan and later George H.W. Bush. This included a very convenient October surprise just as President Bush was surging in the polls in 1992. Special Prosecutor Lawrence Walsh indicted Casper Weinberger and several others and included notes Weinberger had made that made Bush out to have lied about his knowledge of the Iran-Contra Affair. All just 4 days from the Presidential election. IT was then that a fed up Roger Ailes decided we had to do something to protect conservatives from a media and Democratic Party willing to do and say anything to weaponize government and bring down Republicans. He founded FOX News and in retaliation the Liberal Left founded MSNBC. From there came the rise of Social Media and the ability to spread misinformation all over the society. This all occurring while these cheerleader news networks fanned the flames instead of telling the news. We have ended up with a very divided society with extremists at the wheel stirring up the masses, all while the news networks make billions turning news into entertainment. It ought to scare everyone in America and I think I speak for millions when I say we are all tired of it. This episode shows you a brief history of how a noble effort to protect future Presidents from the injustice that took out President Nixon has morphed into a society on the brink. And how we need to return to the worthy ideals espoused by the very President whose demise led to our current situation. I would also remind people of an easy rule of thumb I have followed when evaluating the things I hear on the news and in the rumor mills of politics. "If it sounds stupid, crazy or complicated it usually is" if we would all learn to follow that simple formula a lot of what we see today could be avoided. What happens to the monster at the end of Frankenstein? At the end of the novel, Victor dies on Robert Walton's ship in the Arctic Circle. The boat captain finds his body and the monster who mourns Victor's death in the room. The Creature disappears from the boat to kill himself. Victor and the monster die in the end.
There have been several investigations into the Iran Contra Affair, each of which included testimony from a number of witnesses and produced voluminous reports. This episode examines those investigations to find what, if any, connections were found between the CIA activities in support of the Contras and Agent Camarena, or any of the drug traffickers in Mexico.
