The Tikvah Podcast
Michael Doran on Donald Trump's Middle East Policy

President Trump and his team came into the White House determined to reverse the course of American foreign policy. Most every president does. It's what President Obama wished to do vis-à-vis President Bush, President Trump vis-à-vis President Obama, and President Biden vis-à-vis President Trump. Where Biden was for, Trump would be against; where Biden was left, Trump would be right; where Biden was blue; Trump would be red. Every question of foreign policy with any relevance whatsoever to the cut and thrust of domestic American politics would henceforth be set in the opposite direction. In the Middle East, President Trump thought that his predecessor was too acquiescent to Iran, too squeamish about empowering the Israelis to protect themselves, and too untroubled by Houthi attacks. For President Trump and many of his supporters, the quintessential act of the Biden administration was the withdrawal from Afghanistan in the fall of 2021—a symbol of American weakness, incompetence, fecklessness, and delusion. With the start of his second term as president, Donald Trump set about restoring the maximum-pressure campaign on Iran. He confronted—with aggressive military force—the Houthis. He restored the American supply of materiel to Israel. And yet, these decisions do not tell the whole story of the Trump administration's conduct of American foreign policy during its first hundred days. The foreign-policy record, the disorder, the personnel, and some possible future steps of the administration seem confused. To bring forth some clarity from this confusion, and to shed light on the murky picture of the Trump administration's approach to the Middle East, Michael Doran joins this week's podcast. Doran is a senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, contributor to Mosaic, Tablet, the Wall Street Journal, and the Free Press, and the co-host, with Gadi Taub, of a new podcast called Israel Update. Gadi Taub is a prominent Israeli public intellectual; a true Renaissance man who has distinguished himself in recent years as one of the strongest voices in support of the leadership of PM Benjamin Netanyahu. He has moved, politically, over two decades, from the center/center-left to the hard right of the spectrum. Taub was also hawkish on the judicial reform program that led to so much civic turmoil in Israel in the year leading up to October 7, and remains so. And hardline on the recent firing of Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant, that went down on American E-Day. In fact, Gadi Taub thinks that the firings of military and security officials should have been done long ago. Why? Because as a group they are subverting the will of the democratically elected prime minister and coalition government. Taub calls it as he sees it. These [Israeli] elites are looking up to elites [elsewhere], their their sense of solidarity and belonging is closer to elites in other countries than they are to their own people and this becomes especially poignant since they think of themselves as provincials and they want to rise up to the tier of the metropolitan elites where the real elites are, the real cultured people are Christian Amanpour, who are the real people with a moral compass, so they end up kissing the feet of anti-semites and playing to CNN biases with which are tinged with with anti-Semitism. This is not just a dumb take on the news, this is infuriating. Ilana Dayan is called the Barbara Walters of of Israeli TV so she's the dean of highbrow journalism and she has the fanciest Israeli accent with the knitted brows and and the thoughtful look in her eyes and the rimless glasses, she's like the epitome of intelligence and conscience and yet what she does in the end when faced with something like that is she grovels at the feet of a nasty CNN anchor.” Michael Doran: “I need to get a knitted brow and rimless glasses. I've never mastered that look — thoughtful, pensive.” This discourse by Gadi Taub made me wonder if there are certain physical manifestations of the elite point of view and of the counter-elite view. Take Tucker Carlson for example. I can't think of any elite commentator who makes Tucker's dramatic facial postures. Could we detect who has the elite worldview vs the counter-elite worldview just by looking at someone without listening to anything they're saying? Did Tucker's expressions change as he became more populist? Tucker today presents himself differently from the Tucker of the 2000s. He no longer wears a bowtie. He's more flamboyant and he pulls more funny faces. https://foreignpolicy.com/2024/10/04/west-bank-settler-violence-serves-israel-interests-idf-gaza-war/ “The conclusion therefore is that settler violence leading to the transfer of communities is functional, even if the army does not directly manage it, because it serves the goal of territorial control—something the IDF could not officially openly achieve. Security officials and center-left voices will continue to condemn the dysfunctional violence. But the functional version—the kind of violence that poses a greater risk to the potential establishment of a Palestinian state—will continue to go unobstructed and unpunished.”

Following the execution of six Israeli hostages in Gaza, Israeli protesters are demanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agree to a cease-fire deal that would guarantee the release of the remaining hostages. The deal on the table, however, would force Israel to concede to Hamas's central demand: that the IDF withdraw from the Philadlphi Corridor which separates Gaza from Egypt. Those calling for a ceasefire argue that saving the remaining hostages should be the highest priority for Israel, which can always re-occupy the corridor in the future should it present another security risk. Others argue that Benjamin Netanyahu is right and any deal that allows Hamas to retake this essential strip – whose tunnels operate as the supply line for weapons being smuggled into Gaza – presents a major security risk that Israel cannot tolerate. Striking a deal now will allow Hamas to recapture Gaza and guarantee that this war, which has cost too many lives on both sides of the border, will soon have to be fought again. Arguing in favour of the resolution is Barak Medina, a Professor of Human Rights Law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Arguing against the resolution is Gadi Taub. Iran's missile and drone barrage at Israel earlier this month was the most brazen attack the Islamic Republic has ever conducted against the Jewish state. While Israel did respond with a limited strike, some say Israel should go further and destroy all of Iran's nuclear facilities. The Islamic Republic doesn't have nuclear weapons, but it has the material and know-how to put some together in a matter of weeks. But attacking Iran's nuclear installations comes with enormous risks: It would likely result in significant military retaliation by the Iranian government – something that could lead to a wider regional war that could draw in Israel's allies in the west. A few weeks ago, a team of Free Press producers and reporters arrived at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv. The energy was somber and still, almost like the country and its people were frozen in time. As one mother of a hostage told us, “Every single second of our lives is trauma.” And as the journalist Gadi Taub told us, “People don't even begin to understand the extent of this earthquake and how it will change Israel.” Since the earliest hours of October 7, we've been reporting on the war in Israel. We've published no fewer than seventy articles about it, and more than ten Honestly episodes. In other words: when we arrived in Israel, we thought we already knew all about what happened that day. But there is a difference between knowing something intellectually, and actually standing in a killing field.  The events of October 7—and the ongoing war between Israel, Hamas, and other Iranian proxies—isn't just about another war in another faraway place. This is about the difference between democracy and tyranny, between freedom and unfreedom—in a world that seems to have lost the ability to make a distinction between the two.  As one reservist told us, “We're doing this for the world. Hamas is an idea. It looks at you in L.A. as the enemy, not just us in Israel. We just happen to be their neighbors.”  So over the next few episodes, we're going to bring you The FP in Israel: a special limited series about our time reporting on the ground. We hope you listen. To understand the dramas, disagreements, and protests roiling Israeli politics at this moment requires an understanding of the government's proposed judicial reforms, as well as the history of Israel's Supreme Court and its relationship to the Knesset. It also requires knowledge of Israeli society, and how the founding generations of Israel's political leadership—which tended to be Ashkenazi, secular, and oriented to the political left—have given way to an Israeli population that tends to be more ethnically diverse, more traditional and religious, and oriented towards the political right. That history, in turn, has got to be mapped onto the fact that Israel is also home to subcommunities that each have different historical relations to one another and to the government, and that is each pursuing different interests and outcomes. To understand this Israeli moment, in other words, requires understanding how each Israeli sector—Arab, Haredi, secular, national religious—relates to the nation as a whole. This week, Jonathan Silver discusses the judicial reforms and those deeper causes together with the professor, media personality, and author Gadi Taub, as well as the political scientist, and former state department official Peter Berkowitz. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

Check out our NEW merch store! www.2njb.com/merch *** The government in Israel is celebrating 2 months since its establishment, and boy, what a ride has it been! This week, PM Bennet will go to Washington for his first meeting with President Biden. But here in Israel, many people feel this government doesn't represent them. 1 million Likud voters were left out of the party, because their leader, Benjamin Netanyahu, is boycotted by the leaders of the left and central wing parties. Some people in Israel claim that Israeli society is divided into two - First Israel, mostly left wing ashkenazis, and second Israel - mostly right wing mizrahis. The elites, which includes mostly ‘first Israel', is depriving second Israel from the game, according to those who believe in this theory. Many of them are Likud voters. In his new book, ‘The Mobiles and The Fixed - The Struggle of the Elites Against Israeli Democracy', Taub is debating that the struggle between First Israel and Second Israel, will define the future of the country. Dr. Gadi Taub is probably one of the most hated and despised people among Tel Aviv's intellectual elite. The reason is simple: once, he was one of them. An eloquent left winger, a senior lecturer at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, with a PhD in American Studies from Rutgers University and all the right opinions. But alas, Dr. Taub woke up one morning and decided to “shift sides”. Now Taub publishes in-depth, highly controversial, right-wing op-eds in Haaretz. We're thrilled to have Dr. Taub on the show to talk about his new book.
