The Season 3 finale of the All In: Student Pathways Forward podcast features an engaging panel discussion with three inspiring students and graduates enrolled in or having completed high quality credential programs from different community and technical colleges: Lucy Briseno, a current student at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon; Monique Sallis, a current student at Normandale Community College in Bloomington, Minnesota, and an apprentice with Aon; and Cha Zong Yang, a graduate of Gateway Technical College in Racine, Wisconsin.Throughout the conversation, these students share their experiences participating in innovative, high-quality credential programs at their colleges that have helped shape their career pathways. They highlight the resources, supports, and services from their respective colleges and employers that have made an impact on their progress and success. From knowledgeable, dedicated, and accessible faculty to work-based learning opportunities to available financial assistance and strong career services, the panelists offer a firsthand perspective on what makes a difference for today's learners. The students also provide thoughtful recommendations for college leaders, policymakers, employers and other students based on their own experiences. Their insights offer a compelling call to action for strengthening pathways that connect education, employment, and lifelong success. These three remarkable individuals previously shared their community/technical college stories and insights this past fall at national and Oregon state conferences as part of plenary student panel discussions. Cha Zong spoke at the National Coalition of Advanced Technology Centers  (NCATC) conference in September about short-term industry recognized, advanced technology programs and unique student supports such as the Metallica Scholars Initiative. Monique joined the student panel at the National Council for Workforce Education (NCWE) conference in October in Minneapolis on transformative workforce education programs, including apprenticeships, that offer pathways from college into careers. Lastly, Lucy offered her perspective during the student panel at the Oregon Pathways to Opportunity statewide summit in October on the critical topic of student basic needs insecurity and elaborated on different resources and supports that can help address common student realities. The podcast conversation was an opportunity to explore these topics in more detail and culminate this season featuring students in quality credential programs. The All In: Student Pathways Forward podcast is a part of Oregon's participation in the National Skills Coalition SkillSPAN network and supported by the Lumina Foundation.

David Noyce has spent his entire career researching transportation - in areas like advanced traffic operations, understanding driver behavior, and innovative technology like vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. In this episode, we're talking all about the future of smart transportation and the research being done across the country to bring transportation into the realm of smart cities.Cutting-Edge Transportation ResearchFor decades, Noyce has been performing cutting-edge transportation research at UW-Madison to help make our roads better and safer. In fact, his team helped develop the flashing yellow left turn signal that has vastly increased safety in those situations. Some of the work we discuss includes:Research at UW's Traffic Operations and Safety Laboratory (TOPS)Wisconsin Driving Simulator LaboratoryWisconsin Connected and Automated Transportation ConsortiumSafety Research Using Simulation (SaferSIM) CenterInnovative Research MethodsNoyce's transportation research itself is fascinating, but the way it's performed is even more innovative, including simulation, smart devices, and collaboration. The University of Wisconsin-Madison is home to the SaferSIM Center, where a full-scale driving simulator helps researchers study human driving behaviors in different scenarios. This research is part of the national consortium of universities performing similar work, known as University Transportation Centers. These institutions share data and collaborate to drive the future of transportation technology and infrastructure. In addition, the university is doing live research on Park street in Madison using smart sensors and smart devices to track driving behaviors and patterns. They're even working on a statewide basis with company partners who are helping to drive transportation innovation. The Future of Autonomous VehiclesPerhaps most exciting of all is the work David Noyce and his team are doing on autonomous vehicle research. UW-Madison has partnered with Gateway Technical College and the City of Racine to do research on a full-scale self-driving vehicle called The Badger. Students and researchers will use The Badger to learn about autonomous vehicle technology, capture tons of data as it drives around Gateway's Racine campus, and develop the algorithms that will enable vehicles like The Badger to drive safely on our city roads. Here's the big question: Will all vehicles be autonomous in 10 years?Elon Musk predicted that in 10 years, you won't be able to buy a car that isn't self-driving. Does David agree? Listen to find out!Episode page: https://techedpodcast.com/driving-smart-transportation-research/

Stu Levitan welcomes Jeff Kannel, author of Make Way For Liberty: Wisconsin African Americans in the Civil War from our very good friends at the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. When the civil war began in April 1861, neither the US Army or the Wisconsin state militia allowed Black men to serve. But on April 9, 1865, Black men – some of them from Wisconsin — held the rifles that fired the last shots preventing Robert E Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia from escaping at the Battle of Appomattox Court House. By that time, more than 450 Black men, residents of Wisconsin or credited to the state, had served in the US Colored Troops. In addition, several hundred, maybe thousands, had served in support roles for Wisconsin officers and regiments. Who those men were, and what their lives were like before, during and after the war, are the questions Jeff Kannel answers in this comprehensive survey of an overlooked aspect of our shared history. They're answers he started researching ten years ago, after attending a presentation at Kenosha's Civil War Museum, where he was a volunteer. And after retiring as an instructor at Gateway Technical College, he had time to continue that research, and turn it into this book, for which we are all indebted. It is a pleasure to welcome to Madison BookBeat, Jeff Kannel

The Business of Entertaining with Doug Nicholson - 7-2-17 - Mind Body Spirit Living We all enjoy a night out on the town, including a great meal, and maybe some live music and a nightcap at a local bar. Providing those experiences is the job of entrepreneurs and restaurateurs who love to create spaces for their customers to enjoy themselves with family and friends, and create memories.  How do these entrepreneurs get their inspiration to design the places that people want to congregate at?  This week we talk with a business owner who has invested in multiple businesses that focus on entertainment and fun for patrons to learn more about what this business of entertaining is all about. Doug Nicholson is the owner of the Nicholsworth Group, which includes three Downtown Racine businesses focused on eating and entertaining:  the Ivanhoe Pub & Eatery, The Brickhouse (formerly Envi Ultra Lounge), and Carriage House Liquor Co.  Nicholsworth also includes ATM Financial Services, Nicholson Property Management and Pearle Vision. Doug attended Gateway Technical College for his airframe and power plant vocational diploma in airplane mechanics.  He also graduated from Carthage College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing, with a minor in economics.
