This Week's Show Archives - Mind Body Spirit Living At some point in the course of our careers, many of us contemplate or even fantasize about what it would be like to completely change the path that we have been following.  Though we may have years of training and experience invested into a particular job, company or industry, we can begin to consider if we might be more fulfilled listening to a voice that is telling us to take a leap and pursue something seemingly unrelated. The fear and uncertainty that inevitably come with this kind of decision often hold us back, but this week, our guest will share how she pushed through her doubts and fears to make a complete career transition after decades as an accomplished attorney. Anne Reed became CEO of the Wisconsin Humane Society in January of 2010, after almost three decades as a business litigator at the Milwaukee law firm of Reinhart Boerner Van Deuren SC. At the Wisconsin Humane Society, Anne stepped into the leadership of Wisconsin’s oldest and largest animal welfare organization.  Since 1879, WHS has been saving the lives of animals in need, and carrying out its mission to build a community where people value animals and treat them with respect and kindness.  WHS helped to pioneer the idea that every animal available for adoption in a shelter could be free of time limits, taking as long as needed to be adopted.  WHS operates shelters in Milwaukee, Saukville and Racine, and a new spay/neuter clinic for the public in West Allis. Anne serves on the board of directors of the Shelter Animals Count, a national database initiative. She was named to the Milwaukee Business Journal’s “Women of Influence” list in 2015.  As a lawyer, she was named one of the Wisconsin Law Journal’s “Women In The Law;” was named to the list of “Wisconsin Superlawyers,” and authored a law blog which was twice named one of the 100 best in the country by the American Bar Association’s ABA Journal. This Week's Show Archives - Mind Body Spirit Living When faced with unexpected challenges in life, the way we respond and the choices we make can determine the impact is has on the rest of our life.  When courage and determination are key parts of the solution, the outcomes can lead to inspiring resilience in those it touches. This week we speak with Inky Johnson, who chose to devote himself to conquering the obstacles put in his path after a career-ending injury in a college football game while at the University of Tennessee.  Join us for his story, and by his ability to overcome a childhood of poverty and violence to be someone who inspires others. Inky Johnson is a former University of Tennessee football player who grew up living in his grandparents’ two-bedroom house with 13 other family members. He slept on a pallet on the living room floor, in a neighborhood surrounded by drugs and violence in Kirkwood, Georgia. He and his family moved five times in nine years, all within Kirkwood. Stability was non-existent. His success on the field led to the expectation that he would be drafted to the NFL in the first round, until he had a career-ending injury on a game tackle in the final minutes of a game on September 9, 2006.  The hit caused nerve damage in Johnson’s right shoulder and ended his playing career.  Dr. Russ Betcher, team doctor at the time, discovered on the field that Johnson’s eyelid was drooping, a sign of nerve damage called Horner’s syndrome. Spotting the symptom allowed doctors at UT Medical Center to stop internal bleeding and ultimately save Johnson’s life. Since a routine tackle turned into a life-threatening injury, nothing has been normal for Inky. Not with a paralyzed right arm. Not with daily pain. Not with constant physical challenges.  His dream had always been to play professional sports. You might think his injury would have destroyed his motivation and crushed his spirit. But instead Inky looks in the face of defeat and says, “Am I really failing, or is God prevailing?” You’ll be inspired by his relentless determination, which he loves to impart to others through his dramatic story. Through his walk and his talk, Inky embodies and imparts a truly inspirational message. Inky has a master’s degree in sports psychology from the University of Tennessee. He devotes much of his time to mentoring athletes and underprivileged youth. He and his amazing wife Allison live in Atlanta, Georgia with their beautiful children, Jada and Inky Jr. Inky lives in Atlanta, Georgia and is a devout Christian. He now works as an inspirational speaker.  Learn more about Inky at http://www.inkyjohnson.com/

What can we learn from how other countries have come through times of war, to create an environment of peace and respect?  This week we speak with a guest who has traveled the world speaking with some of the key voices of peacemaking in war-torn countries like Bosnia, Israel, and Africa.  How can we have a mindset of cooperation and a perspective of peace as we work to heal the country for all? David Sanchez graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2014 with a degree in Political Science. At Vanderbilt, David was an Ingram Scholar and was named a 2014 Michael B. Keegan Traveling Fellow. The goal of the fellowship is to develop future leaders through world travel and experiential learning. Graduating seniors awarded the fellowship have the opportunity to pursue an idea or an issue they are passionate about in the context of daily life in communities around the world. David developed an interest in conflict resolution while studying in Copenhagen, Denmark, and trips to Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Germany. The focus of his fellowship year was to travel to 18 communities on six continents for a project, “The Peace-Conflict Continuum: Investigating the Origins of Conflict and Identifying Best Practices for Promoting Harmony.” His goal was to examine why some countries embrace multiculturalism while others see it as a source of conflict. He seeks to understand what factors are influential in inciting conflict, where the tipping point is and what mechanisms could be implemented to defuse ethnic and religious tensions. He is especially interested in the role of governments in adopting preventive measures to reduce clashes and foster harmony between groups. David currently works at Google in Mountain View, California.

Often the stories leave out the deeper truths about what happened allowing old patterns to be repeated in each generation.  Siblings raised in the same household can have very different experiences of the same events, creating confusion and distortion that can fuel challenging emotions as the stories get repeated over and over. Siblings often get entangled in their parent’s marriage, creating conflicts that do not belong to them. How do we live with and reconcile the stories we hear from and about our family, how do we find our proper place in the narrative, so that we can be rooted in the tradition in a healthy way? Your Stories and Your Identity with Professor Ed de St. Aubin – 11-19-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living The stories about our life experiences become a key part of who we identify ourselves to be.  They help us to understand our relationship to ourselves and others, and how we feel about events that happen in our life.  Who or what would we be without our stories?  This week we will look closer at how our stories become the narrative of our life, and what that means for our daily interaction in our world.  Our guest is a Professor at Marquette University in Milwaukee who has researched and studied our relationship to our stories. Professor Ed de St. Aubin received his Ph.D. at Northwestern University and has been at Marquette since 1999.  Ed has taught a wide variety of courses (e.g., Personality, Child and Adolescent Development, Human Sexuality, The Narrative Self, Adult Development and Aging, Psychology and Culture, Personal Meaning in a Complex World). You Are Infinitely Creative with Denise Zingg – 11-12-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living As human beings we are the essence of creativity, with each moment of each day holding the potential for a poem, a song, or a fascinating doodle to spring forth.  Too often we misunderstand the true depth of our creativity, and tell ourselves a story that we are not capable of being creative, in our thinking or in any art form.  This story can keep us from trying new forms of expression, and really exploring the unique thought patterns within us.  We’ve limited ourselves and what we have to bring to the world by denying our creativity. This week we speak with an artist and musician who teaches others how to embrace their creativity without fear, and to quiet that limiting story we tell ourselves.  Tune in for her insights on how to find joy in our infinitely creative selves. Our guest this week is artist Denise Zingg.   In 1980 Denise founded the Spectrum Gallery in Racine, WI, and today serves as the director of the Spectrum School of the Arts and Community Gallery. Spectrum’s educational philosophy is to provide effective individualized instruction to students of all ages by understanding each person’s learning style, abilities and goals facilitated by small classes (between 4 and 10 students per class). In addition to teaching art and music as a portal to individual consciousness and creativity, Denise also teaches Astrology, Tarot and Mandala workshops. Many times we find ourselves affected by the behavior of people around us…they irritate or annoy us and we find it hard to ignore these feelings.  In order to justify or rationalize our discomfort in these situations, we create stories about them and the individual’s motivations and intentions.  These stories that we tell ourselves about others actually say more about us than them.  By projecting these stories onto others, we avoid looking at the parts of ourselves that we might be trying to avoid. This week we are joined by a Jungian psychoanalyst who will help us understand all the ways that we project parts of ourselves onto others through stories, and how this keeps us from owning our own feelings. Amy Champeau, MSMFT, LMFT, is a Jungian psychoanalyst, licensed marriage and family therapist and somatic psychotherapist located in Tucson, Arizona. She is a graduate of Northwestern University, The Family Institute of Chicago, and the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago. Her work is informed by her life journey; her long-time meditation practice; the wisdom traditions of Zen and mystical Judaism; the creative arts; the Point Zero creativity process of Michelle Cassou; and her training in Integral Bodywork®. She is also a certified EMDR® practitioner; a certified TRE® provider, a certified practitioner in Integral Bodywork® and the founder of Moment-to-Moment Painting, a process of self-exploration and creative expression. Amy is the mother of two adult children and has 5 grandchildren. She has practiced Zen meditation for 30 years. Amy has expertise in a wide range of practices which utilize the body as a gateway for personal growth and transformation. Amy’s personal experiences of these modalities and her witnessing of the changes in others who do this work have transformed her psychotherapeutic practice. Her work blends Jungian analysis with somatic psychotherapy, bodywork and creative expression to create a unique modality that moves beyond ‘talk therapy’. Amy’s work has been described as a ‘blend of practicality and spirituality’. In addition to bringing warmth, empathy and a non-judgmental attitude to her work, Amy is also an active participant in teaching her clients tools and practices that lead to real and lasting change in body/mind/spirit. Amy is a frequent presenter on the topic of the body as a gateway to transformation. She enjoys providing consultation to other mental health professionals who desire to incorporate more of a body-oriented approach into their work. It’s OK to Not Be OK with Markus Kasunich – 10-29-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living How many times have you asked someone “Are you OK?”.  We’ve all done it. We want to know the person is doing well, and has life under control.  Most of us respond to that question with an automatic “Yes, I’m OK”.  We’ve told ourselves a story that our goal should be to be OK, comfortable, and satisfied in our life. But it’s not always possible to say that things are “OK”.  Events and circumstances can put us in situations where we are not “OK”, and where we are challenged to navigate emotions and discomfort that is unfamiliar.  There is growth available to us in these moments if we can learn to be “OK with not being OK”, and to avoid telling ourselves that this is not the way the story should look. This week guest Markus Kasunich will share his perspective on the opportunities that arise in the moments when we are not OK, and when we are not comfortable.  He will help us to see that “not being OK” is actually a normal and natural place to be, if we choose to embrace it. Markus Kasunich is Holistic Life & Consciousness Coach, Spiritual teacher, Healer, and Professional Speaker whose key focus is helping clients reveal the unlimited potential of their True Self. You DO Deserve a Wonderful Life with Sammy Rangel – 10-22-16 | Mind Body Spirit Living When you were young, what did you imagine your life would be like when you grew older?  You might have had images and expectations of a family, a home, a fulfilling career, or many of the other trappings of what most would consider a rich, wonderful life.  But sometimes perceived wrongdoings  in our past, or a low sense of self worth can make us believe a story that we don’t deserve to have a rich, wonderful life.  Or maybe those around us have led us to believe that we are not qualified or worthy to fulfill our dreams.  This story that we tell ourselves about what we “deserve” in life can be a roadblock to achieving our own potential and keep us from seeing our life unfold in ways that would fill us with joy and satisfaction.  How can we change the story in our heads so that we truly believe we deserve to live a wonderful life? Joining us this week is one of our most popular guests, who has overcome his own challenging past to help inspire and coach others to truly believe that they too deserve good things in their life, for themselves and their family. Sammy Rangel was born into abuse, and spent most of his early years in mental institutions, foster homes, and detention homes. He embraced violence at the age of 11, joining the Maniac Latin Disciples gang and spending long periods in prison. It wasn’t until a drug abuse program helped him rehabilitate that Sammy began to further his education and start working for a Safe Streets Outreach Program in Wisconsin. Today, he serves on the board of the organization Life After Hate and consults with law enforcement on addressing and curtailing gang behavior. Sammy is the author of the autobiography FOURBEARS: The Myths of Forgiveness. In 2004 Sammy graduated from Gateway Technical College-Racine and from Carthage College with a Bachelors of Social Work Degree with a minor in Psychology, Cum Laude. In 2009 Sammy graduated with a Master of Social Work Degree, Summa Cum Laude, with a mental health focus, from Loyola University-Chicago.
