Ep. 663 - No question, going from an air conditioned-State Farm Stadium to outdoors in the heat and humidity in Tempe has been different. It's also been by design. The Cardinals used this week as a dry run for the regular season, according to head coach Jonathan Gannon; and thus, the change in practice location. After talking about the weather - borderline complaining - Craig Grialou and Zach Gershman turn their attention to preseason game No. 2. The defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs are in town Saturday. Are the Cardinals up for the challenge? Also, the guys discuss the job center Hjalte Froholdt has done which dovetailed into a much larger discussion about the first-team offensive line.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

If you don't know our story of how we ended up in Arizona let me tell you. It started about 9 years ago and we were living in the Midwest and finished up a really cold and gloomy winter. We said let's pick a place to live at that we would want to retire at someday. So, we made a list of several warm states and decided on Arizona. Darlene liked Arizona for the Dry Heat for her bones and joints. I liked it for Golf all year around and lower taxes. We also wanted to move before the kids were in High School. Now the boys both say they never want to leave Arizona. Darlene and myself feel the same way. I like asking people I meet here what brought them to Arizona and how long they have lived here. I like hearing their stories. Some were raised here in Arizona and never wanted to leave. Some came here for college and never wanted to leave. Some came for a job transfer and some came for similar reasons that we did. Everyone has a story and why they live here in Arizona. Of course, we have snow birds also that live half the year here and the other half somewhere else. Snowbirds are normally here from October to May. As always, I am not giving you any Financial Advice and you should seek advice from your Professional Advisors to see what is best for your situation. This is for entertainment only. Shelli Hubbard decided to take her two daughters Michaela and Tiffany along with her boyfriend, Roger, out to the Arizona desert for lunch one afternoon. Shelli had been taking trips like this since she was a child and thought it would be the perfect bonding experience for her kids and her new boyfriend. Everything was great until their drive out of the desert when Roger got the car stuck in the sand, leaving them stranded. Shelli and Roger had only anticipated being out there for the afternoon so the group had no more food, only two small water bottles, and a dead cell phone.

Gardening in a dry, hot timeAlways tricky; evaporation and transpiration really take it out of the ground and the plant's system.Water when it gets cooler (late evening or better still: really early morning).Try not water all over the plants – it needs to end up in the root zone, so aim for that.Water on leaves causes burning and that hurts the plants.Droplets can act as a microscopic lens that magnifies the sun rays.Imagine an upside-down plastic bottle buried into the root-zone of a shrub… with its bottom cut off.Now fill the bottle with water and that water slowly leaks out of the neck under the soil surface right into the zone where the roots are.Easy to re-fill and therefore delivering the water exactly where it's needed(not on the leaves, but on the roots)Instead of just water: put some very diluted liquid fertiliser in; water and minerals at the same time!Sprinklers are quite dodgy: the small droplets will largely disappear (evaporation) before they hit the ground; Also: you can't really control where these droplets (or the remains there-of) will fall.Mulch is a covering material that literally protects the soil from direct sunlight. It cools that soil and the root zone and will significantly reduce evaporation from the soilBecause mulch consists of large particles (and not the fine clay or loam and sand particles) it breaks the hygroscopic movement of water in the soil; it's all to do with interrupting the capillary action and that stops water moving from cooler, wetter areas down below to the hotter, drier areas of soil near the surfaceDESIGNWith the disruption of climate, some areas will get drier (East Coast) others get wetter (West Coast) or windier.Adapt planting to these conditions.Succulents and Mediterranean plants will deal better with drier conditions; as do Salvia, Hosta, Corokia, thyme – do a google search there's plenty of great plants! Some of our native wetland species can cope with occasional flooding – some trees (kahikatea and plants (flax) are ideally suited to wetlands, as are puketea, swamp maire, ribbonwood, putaputaweta…Shelter from wind can be useful too. There are also plants that don't care too much about salt-laden winds (Griselinia, Tecomanthe, bougainvillea, Pyrostegia, Pittosporums, Echiums etc etc).LISTEN ABOVE

It's taking up the entire length of a twin-size bed. I'd seen other evidence of this on blogs, but to see it live and in person—it's a thing of beauty and a joy forever (or as long as it lasts, I guess...). Now if I can just dye it... If I can get my 6-year-old to hold the camera still enough I'll get a pic of it on. And an UPDATED update of my update (dateline 10-9-06): Thank you Heidi!
