We mark the death on August 12, 1612 – 412 years ago today – of the composer Giovanni Gabrieli.  Born in Venice circa 1555, he grew up and spent his professional life in that glorious city, and died there as a result of complications from a kidney stone. Gabrieli's magnificent, soul-stirring music went a long way towards helping to define the expressive exuberance of what we now identify as Baroque era music.  The impact and influence of his music was ginormous, an impact and influence that culminated a century later in the German High Baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)! To a degree beyond any other composer before or after him, Gabrieli's music has come to be identified with his hometown of Venice, in particular the acoustically unique Venetian performance venues for which so much of his music was composed.    It is necessary, then, for us to spend some time in Venice, if only to get some inkling of what makes this singularly remarkable city so spiritually, artistically, and architecturally unique; and why Gabrieli's music is uniquely Venetian.… Continue Reading, only on Patreon! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Jailbreak steering generalization, published by Sarah Ball on June 20, 2024 on The AI Alignment Forum. This work was performed as part of SPAR We use activation steering (Turner et al., 2023; Rimsky et al., 2023) to investigate whether different types of jailbreaks operate via similar internal mechanisms. We find preliminary evidence that they may. Our analysis includes a wide range of jailbreaks such as harmful prompts developed in Wei et al. 2024, the universal jailbreak in Zou et al. (2023b), and the payload split jailbreak in Kang et al. (2023). For all our experiments we use the Vicuna 13B v1.5 model. In a first step, we produce jailbreak vectors for each jailbreak type by contrasting the internal activations of jailbreak and non-jailbreak versions of the same request (Rimsky et al., 2023; Zou et al., 2023a). Interestingly, we find that steering with mean-difference jailbreak vectors from one cluster of jailbreaks helps to prevent jailbreaks from different clusters. This holds true for a wide range of jailbreak types. The jailbreak vectors themselves also cluster according to semantic categories such as persona modulation, fictional settings and style manipulation. In a second step, we look at the evolution of a harmfulness-related direction over the context (found via contrasting harmful and harmless prompts) and find that when jailbreaks are included, this feature is suppressed at the end of the instruction in harmful prompts. This provides some evidence for the fact that jailbreaks suppress the model's perception of request harmfulness. Effective jailbreaks usually decrease the amount of the harmfulness feature present more. However, we also observe one jailbreak ("wikipedia with title"[1]), which is an effective jailbreak although it does not suppress the harmfulness feature as much as the other effective jailbreak types. Furthermore, the jailbreak steering vector based on this jailbreak is overall less successful in reducing the attack success rate of other types. This observation indicates that harmfulness suppression might not be the only mechanism at play as suggested by Wei et al. (2024) and Zou et al. (2023a). In this podcast I discuss five cognitive biases that are potentially harming your health - and no, this is not a clickbait title. We kick off by exploring the concept of cognitive biases - those systematic deviations in judgment that often lead us astray. Then, I dive into five specific cognitive biases that frequently sabotage health goals. From the Anchoring Bias, which makes us cling to initial information (like outdated fitness myths), to the Halo Effect, where we blindly trust attractive individuals as reliable sources of health advice. I also cover the Action Bias, the Empathy Gap, and the Fundamental Attribution Error, each offering a unique lens on why we often struggle with health and fitness endeavours. To wrap up, I provide practical tips for recognising and dismantling these biases, empowering you to make more informed decisions about your health, relationships, and life. Join me for a thought-provoking journey into the psychology behind our health choices, promising insights that can lead to real, positive changes in your life. Buď, Rafaeli, oporou * všech věrných, co do vlasti jdou. Uzdrav je z chorob tělesných * a uděl dost sil duševních. A co takhle domácí úkol? Chcete, milí posluchači? Výborně. Vezměte do rukou bibli a nalistujte knihu Tobiáš. Podivuhodný, epický, laskavý příběh, který povzbudí, potěší, posílí naději na dobrotu Boží i dobrotu lidí. Díky!

Abstract: Behavioral investigations have found that personal interests can profoundly influence language-relevant behaviors; however, the influence of personal interest on language processing in the brain is unknown. We measured brain activation via functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in 20 children while they listened to personalized narratives written about their specific interests, as well as to non-personalized narratives about a neutral topic. Multiple cortical language regions, as well as select cortical and subcortical regions associated with reward and salience, exhibited greater activation for personally-interesting than neutral narratives. There was also more overlap in activation patterns across individuals for their personally-interesting narratives than neutral narratives, despite the personalized narratives being unique to each individual. These results replicated in a group of 15 children with autism, a condition characterized by both specific interests and difficulties with communication, suggesting that personally-interesting narratives may impact neural language processing even amidst challenges with language and social communication. These findings reveal that engagement with topics that are personally interesting can significantly affect activation in the neocortical and subcortical regions that subserve language, reward, and salience in the brains of children. Beth and Marcia talk about their adventures, what led them to start this adventure, and where they're off to next. There are all kinds of factors that go into how children effectively learn, but at MIT, researchers there have been looking beyond the standardized testing and other methods of survey we normally use to gauge children's struggles to read. Dr. John Gabrieli is a lead writer on a new study that just came out focusing on brain waves, and how there's a tangible, physical difference in brain patterns that directly correlates to socio-economic status. Dr. Gabrieli will have details on the research and what the results could mean for equity in education.

Quarenghi was a cellist, composer, and pedagogue (an author, too) from Italy in the 19th C. This episode features a biographical sketch about him from The Violoncello and Its History and Counterpoint. I introduce him and the Five Species of Counterpoint. All together I am planning 5 episodes (shorter in scope) that cover Quarenghi and his dealing with Counterpoint in the cello method. They are: Counterpoint: the Five Species Counterpoint: Imitation Counterpoint: Canon Counterpoint: Fugue Capriccio for cello and piano Quarenghi seems to have been an interesting character at least in so far as he wrote an enormous Cello Method--about 500 pages--and provided ALL musical examples from his own creative output, i.e, he composed them. But what's more is that he included an entire section on counterpoint, which I never recall seeing in a cello method before. This inclusion is certainly no after thought, signifying the importance of the old form that masters such as Palestrina, Gabrieli, and Bach cultivated to the highest degree. If you wish to read more my blog post focuses on this topic of counterpoint giving an overview of the forms Quarenghi showcases in Part the Third, Section 2 of his cello method. http://travelingcellojourney.com/2022/09/08/counterpoint-canon/ To watch me perform several of the forms including the 5 Species click her for my youtube channel. For the past decade, college enrollments have steadily been on the decline. The pandemic appears to have accelerated such drops with reports of more than a million fewer students attending college today. Chris Gabrieli, the chairman of the Board of the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, agrees that this decline is a crisis with the potential to affect many different parts of society beyond just a person's future. He talks about how higher education is moving much too slowly to abate these shifts young people are making away from college. In this episode, Gabrieli outlines why we are seeing such declines in enrollment, shares how simple ideas like early college can lure young people back to college, and why we need to act now.
