"Pasja do Pendereckiego" to tytuł najnowszego, czwartego tomu serii PWN przybliżającej najistotniejsze teksty wybitnego teoretyka i krytyka muzycznego Andrzeja Chłopeckiego.
W czwartek (23.11) mija 90. rocznica urodzin Krzysztofa Pendereckiego.

- Krzysztof Penderecki zajmuje w naszych kontaktach artystycznych jedno z najważniejszych miejsc. Trwało to w zasadzie do końca jego życia - mówił w Dwójce Jan Łukaszewski przed koncertem Polskiego Chóru Kameralnego "Barwy Chóru vol. 2" z okazji 90. rocznicy urodzin Krzysztofa Pendereckiego.
Dlaczego? Posłuchaj kolejnego odcinka z cyklu "Encyclopaedia Polonica".
- W VI Symfonii Pendereckiego istnieje analogia do "Pieśni o ziemi" Mahlera.

Would you believe that Poland is one of the pioneering countries of electronic music? Back in the 1950s, Polish Radio was one of the first broadcasters in the world to set up a dedicated experimental sound studio, which hosted some outstanding composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki. It closed around 2004, but its legacy lives on. So much so, that the famous Black Room at the Experimental Studio is now to be recreated at the new Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw when it opens its new building in downtown Warsaw in 2024. This week I have been tantalizing my followers with the promise of a tall, dark, handsome singer who was born on January 1. I shall keep you in suspense no longer: he is the great Polish baritone Andrzej Hiolski, born in Lvov in New Year's Day 1922 and died in Krakow on 26 February 2000. I have known of Hiolski for years because of his association with the works of the late Krzysztof Penderecki, but I began digging deeper into his legacy a few years ago and was absolutely stunned at what I found: a singer with a near-perfect technique with a powerful voice with a slightly burred timbre characterized by both beauty, range, and subtlety of expression. I have been collecting his recordings for a few years now and have featured him at every possible opportunity on the podcast, including twice already in the current season. But this episode is devoted entirely to him and it may well serve, strange as it may seem for an artist who is so revered and treasured in his native country, as an introduction for many of my listeners to one of the great baritone voices of the twentieth century. The episode features recordings and performances, many of them exceedingly rare, ranging over more than 50 years, and includes music by Verdi, Wagner, Schubert, Mahler, Bach, Leoncavallo, Mozart, Tosti, Rossini, Tchaikovsky, and Giordano, but also a generous helping of music by Hiolski's compatriots, including Karol Szymanowski, Frédéric Chopin, Augustyn Bloch, Mieczysław Karłowicz, Stanisław Moniuszko, Tadeusz Baird, Tadeusz Szeligowski, as well as, of course, Penderecki. Guest vocalists include the supercharged Greek-American mezzo Tatiana Troyanos and the delectable Polish soprano Alina Bolechowska, as well as the venerable Polish bass Adamo Didur, an early mentor of Hiolski's. who now joins company with Jorma Hynninen and Gérard Souzay in the triumvirate of my favorite baritones of all time! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. For a Halloween special, Alec and Nick take up Søren Kierkegaard's frightening text “Fear and Trembling” as a starting point to discuss fear as it relates to philosophy, music, film, and life. Discussing the chilling crisis of faith during Abraham's binding of Isaac and the subsequent “Teleological suspension of the ethical”—the conversation evolves into a broader exploration of universal vs. situational fear, affects of fear vs. the motivations of fear, and the administration and control of fear in everything from the music of Scott Walker, Kubrick's The Shining, Krzysztof Penderecki, climate protesters actions toward paintings, alien surveillance, Sasquatches on the beach, and more. Ultimately, the discussion arrives at tautologies or “degree zeros” of existential fear—from John Cage confronting his own circulatory system in an anechoic chamber, to capitalism and environmental collapse in Lars “TCF” Holdus' new blogpost “Undoing nihilism.”
This week's episode celebrates Halloween while at the same time initiating my new ongoing series on Twentieth Century Opera. From Dvořák's Rusalka, premiered in Prague in 1901, through Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles, premiered in New York in 1991, there is a wealth of operatic material, some barely remembered today, that touches upon various aspects of the occult, be that witches, devils, exorcisms, demonic possessions, or those that conjure the dead. Alongside the aforementioned works, this episode also features work by Benjamin Britten, Gian Carlo Menotti, Igor Stravinsky, Ferruccio Busoni, Franz Schreker, Serge Prokofiev, Ottorino Respighi, and Krzysztof Penderecki, performed by Teresa Stratas. Tatiana Troyanos, George Shirley, Anna Moffo, Mack Harrell, Maralin Niska, Gwendolyn Killebrew, Jane Rhodes, and others in performances recorded between 1949 and… nearly yesterday. Some of it is folksy, some humorous, some creepy, some horrific, but it is peopled by characters that either haunt or are haunted. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Synopsis On today's date in 2001, during the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered a new chamber work for violin and piano titled “Tango, Song and Dance.” She had commissioned the work from Andre Previn several years earlier, but its premiere was delayed as Mutter embarked on a project to perform and record all Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. “After doing all those stern [Beethoven] recitals,” said Mutter, “I wanted to play pieces which reflected the basis of musical history, the folksongs and dances which has inspired composers through so many centuries. ‘Tango, Song and Dance' is both modern and old-fashioned, and it touches the heart, especially the slow movement, which is really a ‘Song Without Words'.” And that wasn't the only thing to touch her heart. It was around this time that Previn and Mutter became husband and wife. For his part, Andre said, “I have one piece of advice to composers for the violin – make sure Anne-Sophie premieres your piece. Then you're home and dry, and everything works!” Other composers seem to agree, and Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutoslawski, Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Rihm, and John Williams have all written violin works for Anne-Sophie Mutter. Music Played in Today's Program Andre Previn (1929-2019) –Tango Song and Dance III. Dance (Lambert Okis, pno; Anne-Sophie Mutter, vln.) DG 8143

For most people, nightmares produce insomnia, exhaustion, and unease. For Graham Gordon Ramsay, a spate of severe nightmares in April 2020 developed into something more lasting and meaningful: a five-movement, 18-minute musical work for organ or string ensemble called "Introspections." To me, it's one of the most arresting artistic documents of the opening phase of the global coronavirus pandemic, and so we've made it the subject of this week's Song Exploder-style musical episode. (Headphones recommended!)Graham is a friend of the podcast; longtime listeners will recognize him as the composer of our opening theme. But he's also a prolific writer of contemporary pieces for solo voice, solo instruments, chamber ensemble, choir, and orchestra. In this three-way conversation, which includes organist and conductor Heinrich Christensen of King's Chapel, we retrace Graham's musical and psychological journey from the pandemic's dark, lonely early months (echoing through the turbulent, disquieting first and second movements of "Introspections") to the gradual adaptation and broader reckoning that marked the late summer of 2020 (reflected in the fifth and final movement's turn to more conventional major keys and harmonies). As Graham himself emphasizes, there's no easy 1:1 correspondence between his pandemic experiences, his nightmares, and this composition. The piece is less literal than that, and listeners will, of course, bring their own experiences and interpretations to the work. But "Introspections" clearly takes its place among a genre of musical creations tied to a particular crisis or tragedy, with examples ranging from Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" to Krzysztof Penderecki's "Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima" to John Adams' "On the Transmigration of Souls," which won the Pulitzer Prize for its portrayal of the 9/11 attacks.Composers—alongside poets, artists, and even architects—help us gain some perspective on our collective traumas. And speaking for myself, both as Graham's friend and as one of the first to hear "Introspections," the piece will always be associated in my mind with the grim, stressful, baffling, but occasionally uplifting events of 2020.After the interview with Graham and Heinrich, stick around to hear "Introspections" in its entirety.I. Unrushed but steady (37:50)II. With an improvisatory feel (40:56)III. Quick, with a very light touch (46:08)IV. Uncomfortable, plodding (47:12)V. To 15-hektarowy park w Lusławicach z kolekcją ponad 1500 gatunków drzew i krzewów - unikalnych w skali Europy. Floriana do Panteonu Narodowego w Krakowie.

On 8 September, 1939, when Krzysztof Penderecki was just a few weeks shy of his sixth birthday, German forces took control of his home town of Dębica with its majority Jewish population. Between then and the liquidation of the Dębica ghetto in 1943, the young Penderecki had to witness the Nazi regime's systematic intimidation, segregation and extermination of Europe's Jews as it played out literally his own doorstep. Twenty years later he took Leon Weliczker's Holocaust memoir, Brigade of Death, and constructed a work for narrator and electronics which, following its premiere, would not be performed again until 2011. Reflecting on a painful history in this podcast, we explore Brigade of Death and the reactions of different generations of listeners to Penderecki's work. Transcription WCAG
Fifty two strings. Eight minutes. Thirty seven seconds. Completed in 1960, Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima has become one of his most well-known works thanks to its use in soundtracks of films by David Lynch, Wes Craven and Alfonso Cuarón. In this podcast we explore its genesis, how its textures suggest an incomprehensible terror and sorrow, and its transition from abstraction to memorial. Transcription WCAG

There are those of us from Generation X in the U.S. that grew up on a steady diet of horror films, underground comix, sci-fi mags, punk and metal music while the rest of the country soaked up sitcoms and disco. It was an era where such preoccupations were not met with wide enthusiasm despite occasional mainstream successes. This, of course, has all changed. To define grunge, for example, is to say that it was the synthesis of metal & punk with both noise and classic rock thrown in for good measure. Hollywood has gone all in on horror and especially films starring people in tights. The kids that grew up throughout the 70s and 80s have now become the tastemakers and almost everything has become mainstream (even bands like The Velvet Underground and Mötörhead). On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards get down with an artist that defines the best combination of all of those influences, Rich Ragsdale. As a director he's made the horror films THE CURSE OF EL CHARRO, GHOST HOUSE and the upcoming THE LONG NIGHT and music videos for Avicii & Lenny Kravitz, Sean Lennon and Les Claypool, Chevelle, Theory of a Deadman and countless others. He's composed scores for most of his films and films EIGHT-LEGGED FREAKS, BIG RIVER MAN and THE GIANT MECHANICAL MAN and TV series' "The King of Queens," "According to Jim" and "Freakshow." His recent spate of cartoons revolving around the last four years in politics takes their grotesque cue from famous EC horror comics from the 50s. Rich is the definition of the modern Renaissance Man influenced by John Carpenter, David Cronenberg, Richard Corbin, Jack Davis, Krzysztof Penderecki, Bernard Herrmann and Iron Maiden. The Buzzards go down the proverbial rabbit hole of all these topics and more as Rich Ragsdale gives insight into his childhood and influences that helped shape an artist that just keeps growing with each new avenue he pursues. So, turn out the lights, pour a mug of hard cider and take a walk down memory lane with the current reign of the new prince of darkness, Rich Ragsdale.
