In der neuesten Episode von "Ring Frei" begrüßen wir einen ganz besonderen Gast: Christoph Golbeck, Prokurist des Berliner Autohauses Golbeck und leidenschaftlicher Verfechter nachhaltiger Mobilität. Doch was macht diese Folge so faszinierend? Too few parents and teachers are having actual back-and-forth conversations with young kids… conversation that last for awhile, that have a progression, that build on exchanged ideas… What a wasted opportunity if ever there was one… in terms of bonding, building trust, and because the brain development that can happen when back-and-forth conversations do happen can make all the difference in children's overall well being, including, most definitely, the social emotional sides of their life's well being. If all we're ever doing is talking to children, rather than drawing upon their potential to express themselves with language, then it's almost equal to encouraging them to walk ONLY when they're holding our hands. Conversation with children, for real benefits to be achieved, needs to be modeled on conversation that we share with anyone… of any age, as in: Person number 1, introduces a topic, oftentimes with an open-ended question, then person #1 becomes genuinely, and undivividly (is that a word?) receptive to person #2's response, who, after expressing themselves will, ideally, will again become receptive to person #1's next set of thoughts and ideas… and on it can go. A lot of research has been done on this form of interaction with young children, much of it under the very official sounding descriptor of sustained synchronous interaction - in other words: ongoing unfoldment of conversation in which both people are equally engaged, rather than one person being a mere passive recipient of isolated bits of information or instructions from another person… which, I don't have to tell you, is what the majority of adult to kid interactions look like. Let's just take a moment to sit on that concept… Let's think about the physiological effect on the brains of the young ones in our care… of the neuronal pathways being built and fortified, with those kinds of mutually respectful, back-and-forth interactions … Research confirms, without a whisper of a doubt, that young kids who do not start out life with consistent back-and-forth experiences and conversations have intellectual advantages, years later… advantages, even, over kids who've been exposed to a lot of formal instruction of information that shows up in high test scores, but whose long-term life skills results are far less impressive. Far less. Have you heard that before? You probably even know the truth of that fact, just based on your own experiences: that preschool teaching methods emphasizing children's interactive roles, yield better school achievement in the long term (Golbeck, 2001, Marcon, 2002; Schweinhart & Weikart, 1993). Another really important fact that research has revealed is beneficial for kids' social and emotional development is giving kids multiple and consistent opportunities to work together, think together, to connect with, and communicate with and collaborate with others. Can we continue to grow and grow as prompters, generators, and stimulators of kids' interactive thinking skills? There are so many positive and constructive ways we can guide young children's perspectives and values in these back-and-forth conversations… One ultra-important way to do this is to consistently share back-and-forth conversations that point out ‘differences.' To point out that differences are all around us and they are a normal fact of life, to be appreciated, enjoyed, respected rather than something to react to with categorizations, labels, stratifications, fear, judgment, mistrust, a sense of ‘otherness,' And, again, research absolutely confirms that it's up to us to have ‘those conversations' for conveying that basic concept that differences are NORMAL and all around us… starting from the earliest ages. Yes, the earliest ages… even with our littlest ones who are not yet communicating with words… but we KNOW that they're highly receptive… so let's do make the most of that fact. Sesame Workshop surveyed over 6,000 parents and teachers of young children, and foun --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nini-white/message

Today I'm chatting with Frank Golbeck (of Mead Institute and Golden Coast Mead Fame) all about mead! He's a super knowledgeable and fun guy who loves mead. 7-13-21 Tonight we're getting together with Frank Golbeck from Golden Coast Mead and Alyson Schramm Naeger from Schramm's Mead to talk about the Mead institute, a non-profit they have founded to establish Mead as an industry with a more than 1000 year future. The Mead Institute was co-foounded by Alyson and Frank to provide resources to mead professionals to enrich the mead experience from production through consumption. They have a detailed view of what they'd like to create with this venture: Getting a tasting protocol published and distributed with the goal of getting prominent wine writers to write about it. Educate the general population on mead terminology, including the process of how it is made and standards for quality. Achieve regular coverage of mead in beverage alcohol publications and media outlets. (“Beer, mead and cider” should be the standard of description for the “craft” beverage family.) Introduce mead as a premium beverage, able to be placed on the beverage lists of premier restaurants across the world and hold its own against the best beers and wines in the world. They also want to build up a Mead Institute library of premium commercial meads they can send out when needed. Create a curriculum for the education of individuals involved in the many aspects of mead making and sales. Create a scholarship fund to provide education for mead professionals. Establish a honey database - to include GCMS, HPLC and MRS data of major varietal honeys, to document authenticity markers and enable yeast and honey compatibility analysis pre-fermentation. After establishing a mead market nationally, define and enable regenerative honey to deliver on the promise of mead transforming the honey industry regenerative for the benefit of the earth, bees, beekeepers and consumers. Alyson Schramm Naeger cofounded Schramm's Mead in 2013 and currently serves as the CEO there. She is a Certified Specialist of Wine, a Certified Specialist of Spirits, a Certified Cicerone, a BJCP Mead Judge and a Certified Sommelier. She co-founded the Mead Institute in 2020 and envisions a mead industry that endures and thrives for 1000 years. Frank Golbeck cofounded Golden Coast Mead in 2010 and currently serves as the President there. He is a BJCP Mead Judge and co-founded the Mead Institute in order to establish a forum for the Mead Industry to discuss and formalize standards of quality in a professional and transparent way so that the industry can thrive as it grows. Frank is a Southern Californian who spent his youth hanging out in nature. He pursued a career in the Navy until, on a prompt from his wife, realized that he needed more in his life. Today, he is the founder of Golden Coast Mead, a small meadery based in Oceanside California that supports healthy bee populations by buying organic honey from regenerative farms. Frank is a deeply thoughtful and deliberate guy and we really enjoyed the opportunity to learn from him! We had the pleasure of hanging out with Frank at his meadery in Southern California. It was a rather fun and joyous episode, in no way due to the delicious and unique organic, coffee mead we were tasting along the way ;) We cover Frank's transition to work that makes him happy, saving bees by choosing suppliers wisely, Bee Colony Collapse Disorder, Regenerative Farming and where to get a good ‘ole mead in Southern California. Really sorry about the beeping – there was all kinds of construction and meading action at the meadery in the background… you get used to it! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Find the show notes here ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ *** SOCIALIZE WITH US *** Website Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube
Jennifer Golbeck, a professor at the University of Maryland's College of Information Studies, has been talking about the privacy risks of Facebook data for years. As the recent scandal involving the massive amount of Facebook data leaked to the political advertising company Cambridge Analytica has raised awareness of the issues—and brought calls for change. In this episode, we’re having ‘double the pleasure’, we have both Blair Housely, owner of Etowah Meadery, a ‘meadery in progress’, and we’re bringing back Frank Golbeck from Golden Coast Meadery, this time to go in-depth on what they’re doing with sour meads.
This week we visit with the guys from Golden Coast Mead. Golden Coast started in 2012 in San Diego, CA and has been kicking butt ever since. The meadery is founded on not just a love for mead, but as a sustainable business, promoting the fact that mead is made using the renewable resource of honey.
Kathryn Golbeck competed in the 68kg Women’s Professional Snatch category, finishing with a score of 82 repetitions. Additionally, Kathryn competed as a veteran in the 40-44 age group, where she snatched the 16kg bell at breakneck speed to secure 211 reps. These may sound like great numbers, and certainly they merit admiration, but it was clear from the sidelines that Kathryn’s professional snatch set wasn’t going as planned. In addition to switching hands early, it appeared that Kathryn’s ability to secure her grip on the kettlebell with each consecutive rep was waning. At just over 6-minutes of work, Kathryn stopped her set, despite showing relatively no visible signs of fatigue. I caught up with Kathryn after her set, and it was clear that she was unhappy with her numbers, but her frustration seemed to stem more from confusion - she remarked a slipperiness of the handle, and repeated that she just didn’t know what happened. If you’ve followed Kathryn’s progress over the last year, these remarks would come as no surprise. On Oct. 31, twenty-five days out from Worlds, Kathryn posted the results of her most recent 24kg snatch set up to that point - 111 reps in 8 minutes. Five days prior to that she posted an impressive video documenting a 150 rep snatch set with the 22kg bell. More impressive still, perhaps was a video posted Oct. 22, just 4 days earlier, of her cracking 200 reps with the 20kg bell.Followers of the Okanagan Kettlebell Club FaceBook group would likely agree that Kathryn is one of the most disciplined and dedicated kettlebell sport athletes in North America today. She’s also one of the most down to Earth and humble competitors Ive interviewed. The following was recorded at the 2015 IUKL World Kettlebell Championships in Dublin, Ireland.
