PlayStation is booming, at least depending on how you look at things. On the one hand, Sony's annual financial results are incredibly strong: PlayStation drove more revenue last year than any gaming entity ever has in the entire history of the industry. Meanwhile, PS5 will surpass 80 million units sold soon, and has become the default console for most players this generation. But there's a downside; indeed, Sony is doing all of this damage with one hand tied behind its back, as major exclusive releases have slowed down to a trickle, while the level of behind-the-scenes mismanagement becomes ever-starker. As we were wrapping our episode up, word dropped that first party studio Haven lost its founder and biggest name, Jade Raymond, apparently after a tumultuous testing of Fairgames, boding poorly for the future of that product and team. Maybe this entire initiative was a bad idea, after all? Plus: Death Stranding 2 goes gold, Stellar Blade is coming to PC, rumors percolate about a Grand Theft Auto IV remaster, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Will Final Fantasy XVII be turn-based? What does the 11th hour saving of Giant Bomb mean for the future of games media? Could Game Pass' undeniable value proposition begin peeling away the Sony hardcore? Who should we cast Obesaga on, so that we can have an overweight cast member for representation's sake? Please keep in mind that our timestamps are approximate, and will often be slightly off due to dynamic ad placement. This week, Nathan, Chris, and Luke are joined by comedian and streamer Tom Walker to discuss the latter's self-made nightmare: an ongoing Grand Theft Auto IV playthrough in which traffic speed is cranked up to max. We talk about how livestreaming comedy differs from traditional forms of comedy like standup and how Twitch chat facilitates a unique sort of chaos that might involve, among other things, a naked person announcing that they've spilled wedding cake on their dick. Also, we get two separate Peter Griffin impressions, so you know this is a good one. Then we move on to the big news story of the week: Nintendo suing Palworld, the Pokemon-alike with guns that got big earlier this year. Nintendo might be the purveyor of family-friendly faces like Mario, Link, and Kirby, but its legal team is about as black-hearted as they come. Why, then, do people give Nintendo more grace in these sorts of situations than they do other companies? Finally, we talk about an obscure Australian holiday that has resulted in, as one chatter put it, “mass horse death.”   Credits - Hosts: Nathan Grayson, Chris Person, Luke Plunkett, and special guest Tom Walker - Subscribe to Aftermath!   About The Show Aftermath Hours is the flagship podcast of Aftermath, a worker-owned, subscription-based website covering video games, the internet, and everything that comes after from journalists who previously worked at Kotaku, Vice, and The Washington Post. Sometimes we even bring on guests from both inside and outside the video game industry! I don't know what else to tell you; it's a great time. A Video Game Time Capsule: The Complete History of Video Games, presented by MRIXRT @reallycool

Between 2007 and 2008, the gaming industry underwent transformative changes and faced challenges both external and internal. In 2007, as the world teetered on the brink of a global recession, new blockbuster franchises like Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, and Uncharted took the stage. However, challenges like the Xbox 360's 'Red Ring of Death' highlighted the need for rigorous quality control. Mergers and acquisitions were the order of the day, with Activision merging with Vivendi and EA continuing its acquisition spree. Meanwhile, Bungie's decision to part ways with Microsoft signaled a significant shift in industry dynamics. Amidst this backdrop, digital marketplaces like WiiWare and Xbox Live Arcade emerged, revolutionizing game distribution. 2008 then witnessed the indie game scene's meteoric rise, primarily driven by Xbox Live's 'Summer of Arcade.' This event not only showcased indie games to the wider public but also set the stage for an indie creative boom that would reshape the industry. The two years posed questions about consolidation, innovation, and the evolving dynamics between major players and indie developers.Featured Games:BioShock, Portal, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Mass Effect, Rock Band, Halo 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Mario Kari Wii, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, LittleBigPlanet, Dead Space. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★ Thanks to our monthly supporters FS Tabreez Siddique Mynx Mopman43 Ritsu William Kage Studio Devil Dallay_g Razu John H The Golden Bolt MykonosFan ErbBetaPatched Vornak Killer Space Serra Mr. Lindsay Autocharth History With Kayleigh Benjamin Steele Nick Makris minimme

My guest today is an award-winning author, journalist and writer for film, television, and video games. After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in English literature, he travelled to Uzbekistan as a volunteer for the Peace Corps. He then returned to New York where he worked as author and editor, reporting on the Iraq war for Harper's Magazine and contributing literary criticism to The New York Times Book Review. A keen thinker on video games, in 2010 he published Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter, a book that included a dissection of his experiences playing Grand Theft Auto IV while abusing cocaine. His 2013 book, The Disaster Artist, was turned into an Oscar-nominated feature film directed by James Franco, and his short story Aral inspired Werner Herzog's 2016 film Salt and Fire. My guest has also written for video games such as The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Uncharted 4, and Gears of War 5, and in 2021 he co-developed the Apple TV series The Mosquito Coast, based on the Paul Theroux novel of the same title. Recently he wrote three episodes for the second season of Star Wars: Andor, due to air in 2024. Welcome, Tom Bissell. Thank you for listening to My Perfect Console. I can't definitively say what game we get the most requests to cover on the show, but I know Grand Theft Auto IV is near the top of the list. And after spending a massive chunk of the past couple weeks playing it, it's time to go bowling (if you know, you know).    I've never been the biggest fan of the GTA series. I think they're fun to fuck around in, but the only one I played around the time of it's release was Vice City, which I didn't love. I finally played San Andreas a couple years ago and adored it, and I've been jonesing to play IV and V ever since.    Longtime supporter of the show, Mr. Doug Dorn, sponsored this episode, finally giving me the kick in the ass I needed to get around to playing GTA IV, and I'm so damned glad he did. This game is now easily my favourite Grand Theft Auto (until I play V, apparently), and it was great chatting with Doug and finding out why this game means so much to him.   And after that, my buddy (and the Roman to my Niko) Andre, comes by the show and we get into the seedy underbelly of Liberty City, and talk about what makes this game so damned good.   And before we go bowling, I toss together another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!   This week, we talk about old gaming cartoon like Captain N and The Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Why the hell does Super Mario World end at 96 exits and not 100?? And what's the deal with the constant short stock on Nintendo's N64 Switch controller??   Plus we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 grand Grand Theft Autos: Vice City, San Andreas, and Liberty City Stories.   Are you on social media? Of course you are. It's always fun to receive a letter, unless that letter happens to be very sad. Sony-owned developer Sucker Punch penned one such melancholy note to its audience in recent days, and it relayed sorrowful news indeed: The team isn't working on Infamous or Sly Cooper games now, they won't be in the foreseeable future, and -- perhaps most surprising -- no other studio is, either. Is the abandonment of Sucker Punch's history... well... a sucker punch of its own? We discuss. Plus: God of War: Ragnarok finally gets a release date, Forspoken is delayed into 2023, Rockstar abandons plans for a Grand Theft Auto IV remaster, and more news. Then: Listener inquiries! What are our expectations for Dragon Quest XII? Is there a future for digital game rentals? Will we ever 'retire' from playing games? Why does Colin hate phone calls so damn much? Commentator for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) (Russian programming) - that's been a long standing gig for New York actor Moti Margolin. He's often cast as Eastern European villains, the most infamous being Dmitri Rascalov in Grand Theft Auto IV. His parents came from Russia, he was born in Israel but grew up in America. Moti is named after his grandfather Mordechai who was a lead actor in a theatre company in Belarus. Acting he says, is his career but videography pays the bills. However, all his work is intricately connected – so much so that his days are scheduled into blocks of activity but they all help him become a better actor. He's also recently been singing, song writing and writing film scripts. Moti's links: https://www.samovarfilmproductions.com/sink https://www.motimargolin.com/ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0802999/characters/nm2463380 Moti's influences: - Henri Cartier-Bresson (The Decisive Moment) - Paul Thomas Anderson (just about all of his movies) - Joan Didion (The Year of Magical Thinking) - Nina Simone (just about everything) - James Baldwin (The Fire Next Time) - Hal Ashbey (Harold and Maude) - McCabe & Mrs. Miller (film)   Each week in creative confidential Jude Kampfner chats to an independent professional performance or visual artist about how they survive and thrive. They share details of moving between projects, becoming more entrepreneurial, finding the best opportunities, and developing a signature image and style. Her guests range from lyricists to novelists, videographers to sound designers. In the early '90s, Coolie Ranx had his eyes set on being a dancehall star. That is until a friend dared him to audition to be The Toasters' new vocalist. He got the gig, and off to Europe he went (Though, a little uncomfortable with the Mohawk, spike-studded punks that came to these shows). He quit Toasters, but eventually came back and joined the group just before they did the Skavoovee tour, along with The Special Beat, The Selecter, and The Skatalites. At the time, Coolie was so entrenched in the dancehall world, he wasn't even familiar with any of these groups--even The SkatalitesThat would change. After recording two studio albums with The Toasters (Dub 56, Hard Band For Dead), he quit the group and started Pilfers, a unique '90s ska band that mixed elements of rock, hardcore, reggae, dancehall, pop and punk. Coolie called their genre "raggacore," and the description was apt. There weren't other groups at the time that sounded like them. On this episode, we talk to Coolie about his musical music. We talk about the 2000s UK ska-punk scene (King Prawn, Sonic Boom Six) that sounded a lot more like Pilfers than the 90s US ska scene did. We break down some Pilfers songs, like "Generation," and we all admire Coolie's amazing impression of Rob "Bucket" Hingely. We also talk about Coolie's new solo album, Days Gone By, which you should purchase immediately.  Support the show
