Today, Hunter sat down with Grant Miller a Utah Public Defender running for Utah House District 24. Throughout the course of the show, Hunter and numerous guests have discussed the importance of getting the public defender experience into legislatures around the country. Part of the reason our laws are so skewed towards police and prosecutors is because police and prosecutors drastically outnumber the public defenders in the legislature. Grant aims to change that with a campaign that revolves around injecting the humanity that public defenders use in their daily fights for their clients. Guest: Grant Miller. In today's episode Grant Miller talks about the topic of betraying Jesus when one converts to Islam. He explains why a Christian would feel this way and he dives into who Jesus is from an Islamic view point. Grant states: This really was a big question for me and it was something that held me back from converting. As I think about the issue and what I was feeling at the time, I believe it is something that may be holding others back as well. I have seen a number of Muslim Dawaa (those who set up tables and hand out Islamic literature and answer questions) presenters on YouTube talking with people on the street and almost inevitably it gets to the point where the person being talked to is just about ready to convert and say their profession of faith for Islam (Shahada) but something holds them back and inevitably they will say they will think about it and come back. And I believe it is this feeling of well if I convert to Islam will I be betraying Jesus?; that hinders and blocks a lot of people from accepting the truth of Islam. So why do these feelings come about? Grant Miller shares his story of being diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the early 80s, being told he had about 6 months to live. As he talked about the negative stigma and rejection that went along with being HIV+, combined with a non-supportive family, his story brought tears to my eyes twice during our conversation. He talks about a time when he really believed he had nothing to live for, yet there was the small quiet voice in him that guided him to keep going. For anyone who has not walked in these shoes, this episode provides great insight into what so many men in our community have lived through.
