Chops and J-Lo have existential questions about 3 Body Problem. Plus some thoughts on the end of Curb Your Enthusiasm and the Chris Rock classic Head of State.
In our first, formal episode, Darth & I are joined by the former president of Estonia, Toomas Hendrick Ilves, who gives us his take on the state of the war, Western Europe's almost willful lack of understanding of Russia, the selection process for head of NATO, what Medvedev is like in person, how Estonia became a success after de-occupation, and how he's that rare thing—a President of Estonia who didn't end up being murdered by the Kremlin. Once he leaves (by the nearest window), me and Darth have a quick chat about western academics and ceasefires. We have a Patreon now and will be adding some exclusive perks for the subscribers. https://www.patreon.com/IntheBunkerwithDarth My (Katie) twitter is @Kshmatsina
Ever wondered how a movie like "Head of State" could prognosticate the rise of President Obama? Join us as we celebrate President's Day with a robust discussion on this cultural gem that dared to dream of a black presidency before it was a reality. Professor Tuck's birthday bash sets the stage for a lively exploration of the film's humor, Bernie Mac's unforgettable performance, and the soundtrack that perfectly encapsulates the story's spirit. We don't just stop at the movie's laughter-inducing antics—we also peel back layers to examine its sharp political commentary and foretelling of an unprepared president in the context of recent elections. This episode isn't your usual political banter; it's a full-bodied conversation that connects the dots between political satire and the real-world mechanics of systematic racism and political scapegoating. Delight in our candid musings on how "Head of State" mirrors the intricacies of gang dynamics in its portrayal of political strategy. But we don't leave you in the realm of fiction for long. We bring it home by highlighting the pivotal role of Congress versus the perceived omnipotence of the presidency, pressing on the importance of being an informed voter and recognizing the power of your voice in the legislative process. As our talk winds down, we invite you into a more personal space where we share stories of personal boundaries, reminisce about Burning Man escapades, and navigate the complex waters of racial preferences in dating. We candidly address our own biases and extend an invitation to our listeners to reflect on their own. Wrapping up with "Head of State," we grant it four stars and a 'certified hood election' label for its cultural relevance and humor. And before we say goodbye, we encourage you to keep your civic engagement high-octane—vote, participate, and help steer the ship of state. Full show notes are at https://offgrid.tlmb.net/Some General Knowledge, a mini-quiz, and some fun trivia we didn't necessarily know until just now. Before each recording, the hosts & their guest solve a cryptic crossword. In the podcast, we riff on words in the grid or clues (spoilers!), telling each other things we find funny or interesting about them. We'll also pick a favourite clue each, and explain how it works to the listener, and have a mini-quiz, also inspired by the puzzle. As the official period of mourning over the death of Queen Elizabeth II ends, some are asking if now is the time for another referendum on replacing the Governor General with an Australian President. But as that debate restarts some are asking if we should use a more Australian term for our potential new head of state, while others ask if we need a separate head of state at all? To answer your questions on the republic, the upcoming federal budget, and why India and China continue to support Vladimir Putin, David Speers is joined by ABC Political Reporter Claudia Long and ABC Capricornia breakfast presenter Paul Culliver.
In its 155 year post-Confedration history Canada was "ruled" for nearly half that period by by Queen Elizabeth "the constitutional sovereign who never interfered in our politics and stayed apart from 'some of the worst of our self-inflicted bickering and internal feuding. As a plus, she spoke both our official languages better than most of our political leaders'" wrote John Fraser, founding president of the Institute for the Study of the Crown in Canada. We talk about the Monarchy/Crown and the role of Queen Elizabeth as Canada's sovereign/head of state. Guest: D. Michael Jackson. President. Institute for the Study of the Crown in Canada. Former Chief of Protocol for Saskatchewan (1980-2005). Recipient of the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers (2021) for his role at the Institute. In this episode Darren picks up on a comment Allan has made several times on the podcast (including the previous episode) about the need for the Australian government to make a formal statement on China. To Allan this is a statement of the obvious, but the two find a surprising amount to disagree upon on the merits of the Prime Minister or Foreign Minister giving a major speech on Australia's relationship with China. Allan outlines the benefits and how a speech might be structured, while Darren worries about the risks, and contrasts different approaches in speeches from the US Secretary of State and the Singaporean Prime Minister. The episode concludes by noting the death of Australia's Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II, and some thoughts on the role of the monarch in Australian foreign policy. https://vm.tiktok.com/ZMLnFB9X8/Will God answer your prayer if you don't end with, "In Jesus' name, Amen?" Learn what praying in the name of Jesus really means. I taught this week on the call of Abraham and the development of God's missionary call through the nation of Israel as they were responsible to communicate the truth of God to the cultures around them. They were given that great commission. The great commission didn't start in Matthew 28. It started with Abraham in Genesis 12 —the first three verses there —Abraham, chosen by God to raise up a nation who would then be God's priests to the world so that they would be a blessing to all of the nations. They had a unique role in the great monotheistic religion. The Jews were supposed to reflect morality to the world. Israel was to witness to the name of God. When they talked about the name of God and witnessing to God's name, that does not mean that they were to let everybody know what they called God, "Yahweh." Their goal wasn't to cover the countryside with evangelists who just let everybody know what the right word for God was.
